Nothing is more frustrating than listening to anti-shoplifting pedestals continually going off throughout the day. I take that back, one thing even more frustrating is when the alarms are false alarms. We had an employee theft interview last night. It was a shock because this employee was always pointing out other theft issues in the store. Had it not been for our Checkpoint Systems, we might never have caught him.

He was smart enough to understand that if he simply bagged up merchandise, the EAS alarm would sound when the anti shoplifting tags passed through the exit doors. So he made sure that he went to the register to deactivate all of the tags.

He also realized that if he was deactivating tags at the register, he needed it to look like he was helping a real customer. So he had friends come in to “check out”. On a recent shopping trip, I ended up leaving a store without making a purchase. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to spend money; it was because I couldn’t find anything in their messy store. This wasn’t so much an issue of employee engagement or merchandise recovery practices. It was about anti shoplifting practices being nonexistent.

Because this particular store had been completely ransacked in their jewelry department. It was almost impossible to find what I needed. Our store uses Checkpoint systems for anti shoplifting. This helps to alleviate most of the criminal element from coming into the store to start with. Next, these same tools that we use to stop shoplifting help clue us in when someone tries a fraudulent refund. They come to the cashier and try to refund merchandise that still has the Checkpoint systems tags still attached, and no receipt.

Other stores that I know of do not use retail theft prevention devices for anti shoplifting. Since the theft of the merchandise was so easy, the store was viewed as an easy refund target within the community. They also did not have any sort of policy in place regarding refunds that did not have a receipt. As a result, refunders on almost a daily basis targeted them.

We started a policy of allowing customers three no receipted refunds within a six-month period before we declined the return. That gave the legitimate shopper an opportunity to return items that a receipt was lost, or they received the items as a gift.

The end result was that we were able to make accommodations to satisfy (instead of alienating) our customer base (usually the ones who did not return merchandise with retail theft prevention tags). For those that abused the refunds, we were able to capture data on who was doing the returns (asking for a picture ID) and track their movements and develop shoplifting cases accordingly on those suspects.

Retail theft prevention isn’t only about anti shoplifting. It is about the message within the community about how your store goes beyond Checkpoint systems. When your retail theft prevention involves the working knowledge of local laws and ordinances, you might find that there are hidden benefits to help stop shoplifting losses in your stores.

In some states, a felony charge can happen with as little as two hundred dollars. For others, it can be anywhere from five hundred to a thousand dollars. Knowing this information is essential to your retail theft prevention. Additionally, you may be able to include the taxes on the item when you charge a shoplifter. If that is the case (check your local jurisdictions first) then you may be able to increase the severity of the charges.

For example: In one state that I worked, where five hundred dollars in losses was considered felony level theft, we had a very desirable item that was frequently stolen. The cost of this item was four hundred and ninety-five dollars. After conferring with local prosecutors, we discovered we could include the dollar amount of sales tax with the dollar value of the merchandise and it would then exceed the five hundred dollar mark. This converted the shoplifter’s charges from a misdemeanor theft to a felony.

It wasn’t long before the criminal community discovered this change. Shoplifting incidents were greatly reduced at our store as a result.
