One of my retail companies signed on with Checkpoint Systems for their installation and maintenance of their new door pedestals and the corresponding Checkpoint tags for anti shoplifting.

Checkpoint Security Systems are pretty straightforward. You start with the installation of door towers at your exit points. These towers are what creates and audible alarm when anti shoplifting tags pass through.

Without the addition of Checkpoint Tags, the door towers would have nothing to activate them, rendering them mostly ineffective. While they would still be a visual deterrent, it wouldn’t take long for shoplifters to figure out they are just for show.

The Checkpoint Tags are hard plastic tags that pin onto merchandise, primarily clothing or accessories. They are also used for zippered merchandise like comforters or sheet sets. By securing the two zippers together, it eliminates the ability to open the bags. An integral part of the process to stop shoplifting is to use Checkpoint systems that include Checkpoint tags. Without these anti shoplifting tools, there have been very few successful resources for retail theft prevention. A large part of the success of the tags comes from how they are made.

The first step to make a Checkpoint tag is to form the hard tag portion through injection mold or vacuum formed. The pins are made from nickel-plated steel.

The second step is to make the resonator. A resonator is a series of tiny metal loops or coils made out of appropriate magnetic metal that will resonate in response to an interrogation signal (formed at the exit door towers).

The resonator is what will trigger an alarm if a tag is left on, or label left activated- a key step in retail theft prevention.

Once the resonator is placed inside the tags, it is time for the locking mechanism to be added. This is the component that will hold the pin in place, preventing shoplifters to easily separate the two sides.

Now that the internal components are complete, the upper and lower sides of the plastic tag are heat fused or ultrasound sealed together completing the tag assembly. Without a tight seal between these two sides, a shoplifter could easily pry them apart, gaining access to the locking mechanism, defeating the tag.

Did you know that if a shoplifter steals the same item in two different states, it might only be a misdemeanor in one state and a felony in another? It’s important to know, because how and what you can charge a shoplifter with can be an important part of you retail theft prevention.

Our thieves knew that we had limited retail theft prevention for expensive saw blades. The end result was that we lost them both frequently and in large quantities. Rutgers University criminologist Ronald V. Clarke came up with an acronym for what kinds of products are susceptible to theft. He uses “CRAVED” for any of the hot products that a shoplifter might be interested in stealing. That means they are- Concealable, Removable, Available, Valuable, Enjoyable and Disposable.
