We had a shoplifter in our store over the weekend. We knew that he was up to something based on his actions. He had entered the store and then bee lined over to our denim wall. What the shoplifter did not realize was that his actions actually made him more obvious. He was not exhibiting behaviors that most paying shoppers do. Shoppers look for their size of jeans, which is found somewhere, near the waistband, not at the bottom of the leg. Even if a shopper picks out a few jeans with similar sizes to try on, they still are more focused on the sizing found near the waistband.

Checkpoint Tags are hard plastic tags used in almost every major retailer as a way to stop shoplifting. The basic premise is simple. Apply the tags before the merchandise is displayed on the sales floor. At the point of sale, an employee removes the Checkpoint Tags with a Checkpoint Security System detacher. The tags are removed in two parts- the pin and the button. Each part is put into a bin to be recycled for use with the next shipment of merchandise.

If you have ever looked at Checkpoint tags or other tags designed for retail theft prevention, you might not realize just how sophisticated that piece of plastic actually is. Embedded within those molded shells is technology that is decades in the making. These tags are considered by some as a work in progress, as the EAS tags are constantly being improved upon.

The first step in making these anti shoplifting tags is to create the hard tag portion through an injection mold or is vacuum formed. The pin is generally made from nickel-plated steel.

The second step is to make the resonator. A resonator is a series of tiny metal loops or coils made out of appropriate magnetic metal (like copper) that will resonate in response to an interrogation signal (formed at the exit door towers of the Checkpoint Systems). This is the key to stop shoplifting. The resonator is what will trigger an alarm if a tag is left on, or label left activated.

Once the resonator is placed inside the Checkpoint tags (or similar) it is time for the locking mechanism to be added. This is the component that will hold the pin in place, preventing shoplifters to easily separate the two sides.

Now that the internal components are complete, the upper and lower sides of the plastic tag are heat fused or ultrasound sealed together completing the tag assembly.

Source tagging is a retail theft prevention practice of embedding Checkpoint labels, or other brands of retail theft prevention, within an actual product. This takes place at the point of manufacturing.

Source tagging takes the smallest possible Checkpoint labels and hides them in seams of clothing, or within the soles of popular athletic shoes. By affixing the labels within the actual product during production, a retailer’s payroll spent attaching hard tags to clothing and other products is reduced. Conversely, the retailers are also saving payroll and customer check out times as there is no need to remove, sort and recycle these embedded labels.

The labels are deactivated using the same deactivator pad used for most Checkpoint systems. The labels will deactivate the same way any other exterior labels do, even though they are buried inside of a garment or product.

When you have product stolen out of your inventory, who pays? Obviously, you do. When I worked security for a major home improvement retailer, we frequently had expensive saw blades stolen. These blades came with the absolute minimal plastic packaging possible. If Checkpoint Tags are not consistently used on every article of merchandise that is determined to need retail theft prevention, you create an opening for shoplifters to take advantage of your store. The best and easiest way to determine if you are executing your tagging standard to 100% is to perform a self- audit for compliance rate.

A self-audit means taking either a sampling of those tagged items (for large quantities) or all of the items (for small quantities) and checking for accuracy. 

If you conduct a sample of twenty items and only ten have tags, you are at 50% accuracy. 50% is not going to keep shoplifters at bay. Based on this audit you know where you need to focus your efforts to make sure you are at 100% accuracy.

Shoplifters are very mindful of any opportunity that is presented to them that makes it easier to steal. Even though you are using retail theft prevention as a way to stop shoplifting, you aren’t guaranteed that a shoplifter won’t every come into your store.

I worked for a company that had slowly been integrating their retail theft prevention over the course of several years. They had minimal finances to spare to stop shoplifting, but knew they needed to have as much as possible.
