A Flick of the Wrist – Checkpoint Security Tags

If you have been searching for anti-shoplifting tools to stop shoplifting, you might have seen a slew of knock off Checkpoint security tags. These are tags that work with Checkpoint systems, but are not authorized Checkpoint security tags.

It might be enticing to buy these knock off tags because they are less expensive than Checkpoint security tags. What you might find out is that there is a reason why these tags are so cheap.

Authorized Checkpoint tags are designed to a different quality standard than these other tags. One of the most significant differences is in the quality of construction.

Checkpoint tags are made to be a seamless piece of molded plastic that has the EAS tag imbedded within it. Part of the success of the tag is that the EAS component cannot be accessed and subsequently disabled.

When you have an unauthorized tag, the construction quality can vary greatly. Often the tag has a seam in it that can easily be pried open. It doesn’t take specialist equipment either. A screwdriver or even a small pocketknife can pry the tag apart revealing the inner contents.

Once the tag is in two pieces, the EAS component can easily be discarded. Without the risk of sounding an alarm, your merchandise is wide open for the taking.

What Do You See – Checkpoint Systems

When you walk into a big box retailer, what do you see? I’ll bet you see clothing, general merchandise; maybe some power equipment or groceries. There are probably several employees in uniform, and maybe one or two employees that are in “plain clothes” that you don’t see. What about a Checkpoint Security System?

If the retailer has done it well, you should not be acutely aware of the Checkpoint System they have in place. It is their job to be discrete enough that you don’t feel like you are walking into Ft. Knox. You, as a customer should have a pleasant and enjoyable shopping experience while in their stores.

If you are not a shopper, but a shoplifter, the Checkpoint Security System is designed to stop shoplifting. By using a combination of anti-shoplifting tools like cameras, EAS tags, alarms, and Public View Monitors, big box retailers know their security systems will stand out to those who are looking for them.

As a small business owner, it is ok to model your own loss prevention and security after the big box model. You may not need to incorporate all of the things that those big retailers do, but even a fraction of those tools will help you stop shoplifting in your store.

When Opportunity Knocks – Retail Theft Prevention

How do you stop shoplifting when the shoplifter doesn’t know that they are going to steal?

What? Are we supposed to be mind readers here? How can that even be possible?

Well the reality is that retail theft prevention really can stop shoplifting by opportunist shoplifters. I guess I should start at the beginning. You don’t have to be a mind reader or have a crystal ball. Opportunist shoplifters are shoplifters that don’t plan on coming into your store to steal.

They are presented with the opportunity to steal and decide to take it.  What if someone leaves a shirt in a fitting room, and you don’t clean it out before the next person goes in. They may decide that to take that shirt because they are aware that no one knows the shirt is in the fitting room. Therefore, no one will know it is gone.

How about taking a small piece of jewelry because no one is looking, or because no one came to help them?

What if your wrap stand or checkout is not cleaned off and an additional piece of merchandise is accidentally put into a bag. The customer didn’t take it, but they also probably won’t bother to return it when they get home and discover the error.

This is where retail theft prevention comes into play. Anti-shoplifting tools like Checkpoint systems will help keep your customer’s honest. It will also help detect errors at the point of sale.

The Nuts and Bolts – Checkpoint Systems

Have you ever wondered how Checkpoint Security Tags Checkpoint labels work.

There are two main components to Checkpoint systems. The towers, which are stationed at an entrance door, and the Checkpoint Security tags or Checkpoint labels.

The towers flank the door and send out a signal, creating a sort of force field around your door. An audible alarm is generated any time a tag enters this field,. This alerts your staff to the door to offer quality customer service to validate a false alarm, or ultimately to recognize a theft in progress.

By just having the Checkpoint system at your door, many would be thieves will bypass your establishment, because you are not an easy target to hit. This element, in itself, helps stop shoplifting in your store. Thieves want to be able to slip by undetected. If they see an obstacle they would have to overcome before making a clean escape, they will think twice about that particular target.

The Checkpoint Security tags will also stop shoplifting by providing another visual cue. These tags affix to garments and are only deactivated by being removed by a store associate. If you can’t remove the tag, the garment is rendered useless to a shoplifter.

A Visible Dissuasion – Checkpoint Systems

Anti-shoplifting takes many forms. There are so many different reasons why someone steals in the first place. A study done by one of the major credit card companies showed that shoplifting is secondary only to going out to eat as a form of personal reward.

At some point, the need for the lift has to be significantly reduced through the probability (not just a possibility) of getting caught. If you cannot provide enough incentive to NOT steal, the internal need to steal will overcome a potentially honest shopper. Having Checkpoint systems that are visible and eminent will help persuade them not to steal.

Regarding shoplifting, getting a “lift” can actually mean two separate things. It is the literal shop-lift or the act of the theft that amateur or opportunist shoplifters are looking for.

They can also get the emotional or adrenaline lift from stealing and getting away with something. Just as there are shoppers who can get a similar lift from a great sale (think day after thanksgiving sale madness) these are people who get the psychological lift from getting something for free.

Retail theft prevention needs to be completely visible to stop shoplifting by this particular type of person. This doesn’t mean that every type of retail theft prevention you use needs to be visible; it just means that some parts of it need to be prominent to dissuade these lifters.

Stop Them Before They Come In – Retail Theft Prevention

Retail theft prevention is about tools to stop shoplifting, more specifically, it is about prevention once a shoplifter enters your store.

I recently read an article that said approximately one in three shoplifters will steal again. It is very surprising that so many shoplifters will continue their path of theft even after an apprehension.

After reading this article, I came to realize it is not simply a matter of using something like Checkpoint security systems to alert you and your employees to potential shoplifters in your store. It is really about making your store less than desirable for a shoplifter to even enter your store.

If you can, try to take those tools another step further. Put anti-shoplifting signs on your doors saying shoplifters will be prosecuted, for example. How about having a sign that says you monitor the premises through electronic and remote surveillance? That would help further the impression that the store is monitored by someone who may or may not be visible in the store.

Even having some signage that signifies you use Checkpoint security systems (compared to an off brand or off name system) can be retail theft prevention in and of itself.

Easy solutions – Checkpoint Security Systems

Checkpoint Security Systems are designed to stop shoplifting. They are a consistent factor of retail theft prevention in your stores. The system is always in place and recognizable throughout the industry to both shoplifters and customers.  However, when they say that the best things in life are free, they are not talking about Checkpoint security systems.

The very best retail theft prevention is something you are already paying for.

Good, old-fashioned customer service is another effective solution to loss prevention in addition to checkpoint security systems.

It is a win-win in order to stop shoplifting. Customer service is effective anti-shoplifting. It will fill in the spaces Checkpoint systems leaves out. The reason customer service is such an effective component of loss prevention is because of the personal interaction your employees will have with any potential shoplifter.

There are some people who are considering shoplifting an item, but are hesitant to actually do so. If someone greets them and provides them with good customer service, they are much less likely to shoplift at all. Similarly, thieves that are a little more experienced will also be less likely to shoplift when they are greeted and acknowledged by your employees. The personal interaction from customer service will always trump an impersonal security system for retail theft prevention.

Stop and Choose – Checkpoint Security System

When you are preparing to use the Checkpoint Security System for anti- shoplifting, there is one basic decision that you need to make. The decision is between using Checkpoint Labels and using Checkpoint Security tags.

It is not that you have to make a decision to completely use either the Checkpoint Labels or to use the Checkpoint Security Tags. It is perfectly acceptable and actually recommended to use a combination of the two in order to stop shoplifting. You have to make decisions on which of your products will use the Checkpoint Labels or the Checkpoint Security Tags.

Since the Checkpoint Security System is compatible with both products, it is easy to use them simultaneously. The Checkpoint Labels are great with merchandise that has a flat, hard surface. They work as price labels on a box or on an existing tag. The labels also are good on small items like a jewelry card, or a medicine bottle. They are easy to use in pockets of clothing or accessories like wallets or bags.

The Checkpoint Security Tags are great on items that are soft, like fabrics. Because they traditionally pierce the item with a dual sided tag and pin, clothing items respond well to this type of Checkpoint Systems.

Refund Fraud – Stop Shoplifting

In one of the stores that I worked in, we had a huge issue with people coming into our store and Checkpoint systems would always go off when they walked into the store, not out of it. Had the items been previously purchased, the tags would have been deactivated when the items were sold.

I always found it challenging when training on anti shoplifting to discuss the events of our refund desk. While it is frustrating to see that these refunds of stolen merchandise come into the store, it is not where the loss was occurring.

The losses actually come when the merchandise is stolen. In order to prevent this sort of refund fraud, you have to be able to find a way to stop shoplifting.  It doesn’t matter how many times you turn away a refund, all you are doing is missing an opportunity to get an ID and potentially start a case.

The return might be prevented, but you are still out your merchandise. It will walk out the door for a second time and you will have no way to track who had it or where it is going.

Measure to Manage – Retail Theft prevention

The best way that I have found to stop inventory discrepancies is to understand the three ways to shrink, or lose, merchandise. They are employee theft, shoplifting and operational breakdowns. Once you have a way to define your losses, you can start to find ways to stop shoplifting to decrease those losses.

If you look at where most losses come from, it will probably be from theft. Having a good retail theft prevention product like the Checkpoint Systems will positively impact your losses from shoplifting and employee theft.

If you can measure it, you can manage it. Ask yourself where you fall when you look at your financials? Are you in the positive, or are you having deficits? If there is a shortfall, is it because you are experiencing discrepancies with your perpetual inventory?

If so, there are a few options you should be aware of, especially if you are having issues due to a lack of anti-shoplifting tools.

With the addition of Checkpoint systems, retail theft prevention will quickly fall into place. Shoplifters know not to mess with the system, and your employees know they can no longer mess with you.

Keep in mind that it has been statistically proven that installing Checkpoint systems inside your retail establishment will significantly reduce your inventory losses.
