Through The Front Door – Retail Theft Prevention

I recently had an opportunity to speak to several peers in the retail industry. We chatted about a variety of topics but the conversation soon turned toward our issues with retail theft prevention. It seemed we all were experiencing some form of refund or return fraud and didn’t know how to handle it.

For some of my peers, the refund fraud was causing more issues with policies. They did not have policies in place regarding refunds that did not have a receipt. As a result, refunders targeted them on almost a daily basis.

For others, they did not use anti-shoplifting devices for retail theft prevention. Since the theft of the merchandise was so easy, the store was viewed as an easy refund target within the community.

Our store uses checkpoint systems to stop shoplifting. This helps to alleviate most of the criminal element from coming into the store to start with. Next, these same tools that we use for retail theft prevention also help clue us in when someone tries a fraudulent refund. They come to the cashier and try to refund merchandise that still has anti shoplifting tags still attached, and no receipt.

We started a policy of allowing customers three no receipted refunds within a six-month period before we declined the return. That gave the legitimate shopper an opportunity to return items that a receipt was lost, or they received the items as a gift.

Another Employee Lost- Stop Shoplifting

Last night we had another employee lost to temptation. They seemed to be so in tune to retail theft prevention. They were always quick to point the finger at potential shoplifters and other employees who were stealing.
It was unfortunate to discover that all of this finger pointing was just a smoke screen. He was stealing merchandise and had been for a very long time. Had it not been for our checkpoint security tags we may not have ever caught him.
He was smart enough to understand that if he simply bagged up merchandise, the EAS alarm would sound when the checkpoint security tags passed through the exit doors. So he made sure that he went to the register to deactivate all of the tags.
He also realized that if he was deactivating tags at the register, he needed it to look like he was helping a real customer. So he had friends come in to “check out”.
One day, he must have missed a tag because the alarm went off when the customer/ friend left. Later on when I reviewed the alarms and the receipts I realized that no actual sale took place. I researched more and found out just how many time he had been faking sales. Had it not been for the checkpoint security tags to stop shoplifting, we may not have ever found out his employee was stealing.

Three Simple Steps – Anti-shoplifting

Trying to teach my child how to do things, I have learned the art of simplifying a process. If I can teach her in three steps, it is easier for her to learn as well as easier for her to remember what to do. When I think about all of the anti-shoplifting action plans I have seen over the years, I wonder how many of them would have been more successful had we simplified them down to three simple steps.

Take adding Checkpoint security tags into a store. I have seen some crazy, in depth, time consuming and overly complex action plans to get the program going. The reality is that it only takes three simple steps to use Checkpoint security tags to stop shoplifting.

  • Step one:  Decide what merchandise needs to have some retail theft prevention.
  • Step two:  Put the anti-shoplifting tags on that merchandise.
  • Step three:  Move the tagged merchandise back onto the sales floor to be sold.

Now, it is not that I think everyone needs to be spoken to like a three year old, it’s quite the contrary. I just see too many employees or managers who are over thinking their strategies and the end result is that their plans often are not followed through or successful. By simplifying an action plan, you can give that plan a better shot of being successfully implemented and used.

Dictate The Level Of Service- Retail Theft Prevention

Customers are more likely to buy impulse items when they can touch and take them at their leisure. When these same items are placed in a locked area, their sales decrease. This is just one example of the line between effective anti shoplifting and effective customer service.
In smaller convenience areas such as pharmacy, food and beauty, your retail theft prevention must not impact or hinder the flow of customers. There is a greater need by the customer to get in and get out with a minimal wait at the point of sale.
This is an ideal situation to use checkpoint systems to stop shoplifting. It is better to incorporate soft labels that are quickly deactivated during the checkout process and do not require any additional steps/ time involved.
Depending on your retail market, studies have shown that customers who are buying electronics and other such accessories are more willing to wait at the point of sale for anti shoplifting components to be removed.
The line between customer service and retail theft prevention can be found. It is simply a matter of understanding which scenarios require different levels of customer service, and which ones can withstand an increase in ways to stop shoplifting.

A Hot Topic- Retail Theft Prevention

Anti shoplifting was always a hot topic for a fellow manager and I. We used to share stories and exchange thoughts on how to approach certain situations in the workplace. He firmly believed in managing to the small things. If you could manage the little things that went on, the big things would take care of themselves.
I always had a hard time believing him. I spent most of my time running around putting out fires- taking care of the big things, as it were. My retail theft prevention revolved around apprehending the shoplifters who were brazenly taking the large (expensive) items right out the door. I didn’t have “time” to deal with the small little things.
After a while, I began to get frustrated because I felt like I did stop shoplifting in the store, but the thefts kept coming. I knew I needed a new way to stop shoplifting on a more permanent basis.
I decided to try my friend’s advice and focus on the little things. Instead of watching the big items, my checkpoint systems was focused on reducing the shoplifters who were testing the waters by stealing items that easily went unnoticed. I made sure my retail theft prevention sent a clear message that the small items were alarmed and tagged.

Small Problem, Small Solution- Checkpoint Labels

The addition of Checkpoint labels will help reduce a significant amount of losses from the theft of small items of merchandise.  Because they are easy to steal, and frequently have a high dollar value, they make for a prime target for shoplifters.
These items can be found in practically every classification of retailer. Depending on what percentage of your store’s individual shrink comes from small items, it might be beneficial to focus on how to stop shoplifting as part of your retail theft prevention plan.
Checkpoint labels work simultaneously with Checkpoint systems that are already in place. These labels can be applied as a visual deterrent; you can even have the word “alarm” pre- printed on them. They can also be hidden covertly inside of a pocket or a sleeve of a wallet, for example.
Anti shoplifting labels are a great way to incorporate retail theft prevention tools on these small pieces of merchandise. The labels are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, making them a versatile solution for your store. You might even see a decrease in the larger items too. As shoplifters discover that the small items are monitored, they might assume that the larger items will be monitored too.

The Sharp Dressed Man – Retail Theft Prevention

During a recent post-shoplifting interview, we discovered that our store employees were unintentionally profiling shoplifters. We learned this from a very sharp dressed shoplifter. He would come into our stores wearing a bright purple suit that made him stand out in the crowd. Because all of our anti-shoplifting training is geared towards shoplifters who are avoiding detection, no one ever suspected this man of being a thief.

This shoplifter said that he always came into the stores well dressed because people were not as suspicious of him. Employees would smile and say hello as he walked passed. It wasn’t until he set off the alarms that anyone would realize what was going on. By then it was too late for them to do anything about it.

It was a sad realization that he was right. If he had come in to steal and was wearing casual or worn out clothes, he might have been targeted immediately. By dressing up, the employees all assumed he had money, and therefore would be paying for his purchases and never raised their suspicions.

We want our employees to stop shoplifting through consistent customer service. When they failed to give the well-dressed customer proper service and attention, they opened the door for uninhibited theft to occur.

Boost Your Profits, Not Your Products – Anti-Shoplifting

Some areas are seeing a resurgence of booster bags being used by shoplifters as a way to defeat Checkpoint systems. These are primarily foil-lined bags that can interfere with the transmission signal sent by checkpoint security tags to the other components of the checkpoint systems. If the signal is weakened or eliminated, the alarms will not sound, making for a clean get away by the shoplifter.

In order to prevent or stop shoplifting using boosters, you need to be extra diligent. Because it is harder to spot the merchandise leaving, you have more limited warning flags to look for.

It comes back down to recognizing the nervous behaviors most shoplifters have. Because they are more confident that they won’t be caught, the signs are subtler, but they are still there.

Watch for customers who are picking up multiples of an item. If it is clothing, are they picking up several of the same item in the same size? Shoplifters who are using boosters are looking for a bigger haul. The disregard to normal quantities a shopper would buy is one of the signs of a shoplifter.

Soak Up The Profits – Checkpoint Labels

What many consumers are not aware of is Checkpoint labels actually go beyond the clothing department. Checkpoint Systems have retail theft prevention that is designed for specific grocery applications. The RF Soaker Pad is one of those products created for anti-shoplifting of fresh meats.

The nice thing about using these Checkpoint labels is that there are no additional processes that need to be conducted to stop shoplifting. The RF Soaker Pads are simply switched out instead of using the non-EAS pads. The production department puts these new soaker pads onto the Styrofoam package and then the meat goes on top.

The retail theft prevention comes from the Checkpoint labels that are pre imbedded into the soaker pads. This makes it easy for grocers to stop shoplifting fresh meats, which in turn helps to preserve and increase profitability.

From a more technical aspect, the Checkpoint labels that are imbedded in the soaker pad are designed to work after it has been in contact with the liquids. As long as at least half a pound of meat is placed on the soaker pad, the RF Soaker Pad is microwavable. This means there are no additional warnings or precautions that need to be made by the consumer if they chose to freeze and then defrost the meat via microwave.
