Throw away the lock and key – Bottle Locks

Beautiful weather is great for traveling. I love a great road trip that takes me to a picturesque, off the beaten path, place. Usually, I see signs for the local wineries along the way. Depending on the day’s agenda, we try to stop and support these local businesses. I have to take note that most of them do not use EASy Bottle bottle locks.

It is really a shame, because Alpha Security bottle locks would be such an easy addition to their bottle security. I mention it is a shame because these same vineyards have other anti-shoplifting products in place in their gift shop. They tag their other merchandise and bypass having any bottle security. With the anti- shoplifting systems are already in place, it would be an easy addition to use locks.

I think most of these owners think that locks are only for liquor bottles. They keep their wines behind lock and key instead of proudly displayed. They would be able to merchandise their wines front and center. That is why we are all at the wineries, right? It is for the wine.

As much as I love looking at the other accessories and wine flavored foods, I am more interested in looking at their wines. Having these locks would give them that opportunity without opening themselves up to the risk of losses.

EAS-ily Overlooked – EASy Bottle

I recently came across an bottle security and theft of alcohol. Well, this one was had nothing to do with alcohol or liquor bottle security.

This owner had been smart enough to use bottle locks for his bottle security- specifically the Alpha Security EASy Bottle. His inventory was right in line where it needed to be, at least in the alcohol department. He was having an issue with his mixers.

He kept a reach in cooler filled with mixers of various types, which also included some non-alcoholic drinks like sodas and energy drinks.

It seemed strange that he was ordering these mixers more frequently than normal. After a closer look, it turned out that his employees were grazers. A grazer is an employee who grazes throughout their shift. They will pick up random drinks, like water or sodas to consume during the course of their shift. They might also take items found at the registers like packs of gum, chips, candy bars and crackers to snack on.

Because these are such commonplace items, it is not as easily identified when employees take them directly out of the store’s inventory, versus bringing them from home.

The best course of action is to require employees to not allow food on the sales floor, and maintaining a close watch on your inventory, just as you would with the rest of your liquor bottle security.

Control the Burn- Bottle Locks

Have you ever gone into a liquor store and stood in the aisle for what seems to be a seriously long amount of time? Yeah, I’ll admit, I have. It is usually when I am trying to decide between a few brands of a particular type of liquor I am not completely familiar with. It is even harder to decide when the store’s bottle security is keeping the bottles behind a locked glass case.

It is hard to decide on a bottle when all you have to go on is the products label. Liquor bottles aren’t like other products. There are very few graphics or descriptions. Some inexpensive liquors are reasonable, and some are inexpensive for a reason.

While some states are allowing for controlled sampling by liquor stores, there are regulations that must be followed. These regulations keep the bottles sanitary. They also check identifications for age and authenticity. Bottle locks keep these regulations in check as well as providing contact with the customer and the bottle.

There is no longer a need to keep the bottles behind a locked case when they are using the Alpha Security Bottle Locks. These EASy Bottle locks keep the liquor on the shelf when it needs to be sold. These same bottle locks also keep the contents of open bottles secured when they are being used for tasting purposes. It’s a great way to change your bottle security.

It’s No Secret – Liquor Bottle Security

I was having a conversation with the bar owner that I was working for. He was expressing his frustration with one of the managers we had. He said, “It’s business, it’s not a secret!” I think that was my first clue that we needed more liquor bottle security in our bar.

The manager was having a hard time explaining inventory and sales figures and tried to keep things under lock and key as much as possible – especially from the owner. The owner didn’t want to believe that this manager could be stealing or giving away drinks when he was working.

This was a more complicated problem than just needing to implement liquor bottle security with the Alpha Security EASy Bottle Locks. This was a problem with an employee keeping detrimental secrets.

There were problems with numbers not matching up and high inventory costs. While the owner was suspicious that the manager was just inept at his job, I saw more. I saw that the manager was probably keeping secrets for a reason. I knew that this manager had a drinking problem. I also know that this manager did not have a naturally dynamic personality and was always working hard to make friends.

The reality was that he was giving away drinks to try and make friends in addition to feeding his own drinking problem.

I Mean You Harm- EASy Bottle

The bottle locks that you use for your liquor bottle security might be doing their job, but not for the reasons you might think. If you are using the Alpha Security EASy Bottle, for your liquor bottle security, you might not be completely aware of all of the different ways the locks prevent theft.

The most obvious is the visual deterrent that bottle locks provide. It allows a potential shoplifter to take one look at your shelves and decide it is time to go elsewhere. They can see from the doorway that you are using bottle locks.

Were you also aware that there are little pain points under the base of the lock?

OUCH!

These points are meant to keep fingers away and deter attempts at trying to disarm them. Don’t worry though; these points are far enough underneath the lock that your normal customer won’t feel them.

The Crystal Guarde bottle lock is clear. That helps you in two ways, one it allows your customers to fully see the product. It also keeps any tax stamps easily in view in case of any state (or other) audits.

Finally, imbedded in the locks are EAS tags. These tags work the same way as they do in other retail environments. They set off the alarm if someone tries to sneak out with the full bottle.

What Makes it so Easy? – Bottle Locks

If you are hearing about the Alpha Security EASy Bottle for the first time, you might be wondering what makes their bottle lock so easy compared to other bottle locks on the market.

There is a two-fold answer to this question.

The first part is the literal ease of the product. The Alpha Security EASy Bottle is a device that slides effortlessly over the top of a bottle and secures to the neck of the wine or liquor bottle. They come in a variety of sizes and styles to accommodate the different shapes and sizes of bottles.

There are several types of detachers that can be used on the bottle lock. They can be stationary, such as at a cash register stand, or they can be carried with an employee on a retractable lanyard attached to their pants pocket.

The second part is the EASy part. The EASy is a designation for the alarm that corresponds to an Electronic Article Surveillance system (or EAS). It allows you to prevent a bottle from being stolen because it would set off an audible alarm.

So whether you think of the bottle locks as EASy or easy you can be confident that your liquor investment will be protected and achieving great profits will be as easy as pie.

But Officer, I Didn’t Steal it- Liquor Bottle Security

Liquor bottle security is not always about someone coming in and trying to shoplift a bottle. As it turns out, some people actually try to consume the alcohol on the premises. There are reported incidents of people trying to open bottles and pour the contents into other containers.

They may not take or steal the entire bottle, but these actions cause the same inventory and financial loss. I mean, who can convince the next customer to buy an open, half empty bottle?!

These losses can cause just as much damage as actual shoplifting or employee theft can. The difference is that the crime is easier to justify in the minds of the perpetrators. Just drinking the alcohol, is not as tangible as theft. Since they don’t actually leave a store with a stolen object (I.E Liquor or wine bottle) they don’t see it as stealing. That makes it harder to stop.

This is a prime example where EASy bottle by Alpha Security, or comparable bottle locks, would have prevented the losses from occurring. These offenders would have more than likely left the store without incident by not having access to the bottles’ contents.

Sending a crook down the street is about the best way to protect your assets. Bottle locks help to send the crooks packing.

Testing Your Investment – Bottle Locks

The control process is a four-step process that can be implemented in any (or all) of the various levels in an organization to ensure that the organization is adequately producing on all levels.

The good part is that anyone can use the control process. Even low-totem hourly employees are given an avenue to become engaged and take ownership in the organization. In addition, you also have the opportunity and ability to determine if something is working, like the new bottle lock you just started using for your bottle security.

Step One: set the performance standard. Your bottle locks must not interfere with your daily operations, but should still reduce and prevent inventory shrink.

Step Two: measure the performance. You should start to see an immediate reduction in theft and bottle locks should only take a fraction of your stocking time to utilize.

Step Three: evaluate performance. Time your employees to discover how long it takes to apply bottle locks. Quantify how much less product you are ordering to compensate for your inventory losses. There should be evidence in your product receipts after the first few months that your inventory costs are coming back in line as a result of your increased bottle security

Step Four: Take corrective action. Find out why the bottle lock is taking too long to apply if that is the case. Discover if additional training is needed or if your employees are not working efficiently enough to get the job done.

Liquor and Alcohol Fallout in Washington

In Washington State, the private sector is now allowed to sell liquor and alcohol as a result of recently passed legislation. This deregulation was initially met with overwhelming approval; however, now there appears to be a new grass roots buzz in response to the fallout.

Prices have increased. It appears that liquor taxes are driving the up the prices.  There is also less variety offered because the private sector is unwilling to stock the multitude of brands found in the state run agencies.

Consequently fewer off-brands are to be found, leaving consumers with mostly name brands which are more expensive.  Add the huge taxes and the result is a major blow to average person’s budget.

Theft will start filling in the gaps when a drastic price increase is put in place with a highly desirable and consumable product, especially alcohol.

Liquor bottle security needs to be in place to prevent this sort of redistribution of wealth, if you will. An easy-to-use bottle lock keeps your goods on the shelf until the paying consumer purchases the product.

Alpha Security’s product line EASy Bottle bottle locks are the perfect solution for your liquor bottle security.

Proactive Security When You Need It

Unfortunately when a security incident occurs, the question of security is asked after the incident instead of well in advance. Oftentimes the proper preventative measures were not in place because people were not prepared.

Unfortunately after an incident, people will inevitably start to point fingers blaming others and second guessing who should have done what instead of focusing on solutions. Trying to determine what happened and where the breakdown occurred can get ugly very quickly.

My best advice is to be proactive in your approach, particularly regarding bottle security. When you are prepared, you are better equipped to handle a sticky situation when (not if!) it occurs.

The most reliable liquor bottle security you can find is Alpha Security’s EASy Bottle bottle locks. They are easy to install, easy to use, and easy to remove – just as the name implies – easy.

Never again will you ask “where is bottle security when I need it? The answer is Alpha Security and it is always right where you need it – on the bottle. Without the proper keys to detach them, the bottle locks cannot be removed and will stay securely on the bottles. THIS is security when you need it – where you need it!
