theft (2)During my last consultation, I had an interesting discussion with a business owner over the difference between high revenue and actual profit. He was under the impression that just because his business had consistently outstanding sales revenue that his business should be extremely profitable. He couldn’t understand why he was having trouble paying his bills and payroll for his employees.

I had to convince him that his sales weren’t where there was a problem. It was everything that was going on in the middle that was taking away from his profits. Somewhere he had operational breakdowns that were eating away at his incoming funds, preventing him from comfortably paying his operating expenses, and then leaving very little left over in the form of true profits.

The fact that he did have exemplary sales and revenue was probably the only reason why he was able to keep his doors open for business. Good sales are vital to a business’s longevity. Unfortunately, if the day-to-day operations are not efficient, all of the work put into generating sales revenue is easily rendered null and void.

Since we knew that he wasn’t having an issue with his sales, we started looking at some of the other possible causes for his profits to be eaten up. We started with his inventory. We looked at where he was spending his money and what he thought were the best and the worst selling products.

In one example, a particular vendor had been telling him that this particular brand was one of his best sellers. As such, the owner was putting in huge orders for the product. After taking a look at the actual sales and the actual on hand inventory, we realized that the sales did not justify the product he had on hand. In fact, based off of actual sales, there was 15 years worth of inventory. The vendor saw this business as an uninformed target and took advantage of it.

By eliminating this unnecessary inventory cost, the business owner was able to save several tens of thousands of dollars a year in lost profits.

Employee at Wal-Mart in Franklin charged with theft

The Franklin Police Department received a complaint Friday about a possible employee theft at Wal-Mart.

Police were told that the employee, Timothy Youngblood, 43, who worked in sporting goods, stole about $5,000 worth of merchandise over the span of a few months, according to a news release from Franklin police.

Two Franklin officers watched store surveillance video, and officers recovered about $1,068 worth of Wal-Mart property from Youngblood’s East Cedar Street home. Police found sporting goods, tents, appliances, cookware, gourmet coffee and high-end coffee brewers.

Youngblood was charged with theft by unlawful taking over $500 but less than $10,000. His wife, Shawn M. Snay-Youngblood,


Pennsylvania’s top court rules $75,000 fine for employee’s theft at casino illegal

The state Supreme Court on Tuesday found that a mandatory $75,000 fine imposed upon a poker dealer convicted of stealing $200 from the Rivers Casino is unconstitutional.

“The fine at issue here, both in an absolute sense and in a comparative sense, is strikingly disproportionate to the manner in which other crimes are punished in Pennsylvania. That the fine is mandatory merely exacerbates the disproportion,” wrote Chief Justice Ronald Castille in the unanimous, 33-page opinion.

Matthew Eisenberg, 29, was charged with misdemeanor theft under the Gaming Act after taking $200 in poker chips from Nov. 26-30, 2010, from the gaming table where he worked at the Rivers.


Knox Trustee’s ‘ghost employee’ found guilty of theft

A Knox County jury on Friday agreed with the state: Former Trustee’s Office employee Delbert Morgan was a “mystery,” a “phantom” and a “ghost.”

He rarely if ever worked. And yet he collected almost $152,000 in salary and benefits during the four years he was with the county’s tax collection office.

The jury, after a two-week long trial, found the 58-year-old Grainger County businessman guilty of felony theft, a charge that is punishable by eight to 12 years in prison.

Morgan, who can also receive probation, will be sentenced on Oct. 23.

“He may have done a little work, but the state submits that it was bad from the beginning,” prosecutor Bill Bright told the jury during closing arguments Friday.

Fellow prosecutor John Gill agreed.

After the verdict was read, he said that Bright “did an unbelievable job making a complicated case clear.”

Pizza employee charged with theft

ESCANABA – A 52-year-old Escanaba woman – accused of embezzling from a local pizza business – has been bound over from Delta County District Court to circuit court where she may make a plea or schedule a trial.


Former newspaper employee pleads guilty to felony theft

A former Tribune-Herald employee pleaded guilty Monday to charges related to accusations that she stole more than $100,000 from the newspaper’s former owners.

Sylvia Susan Ancira, 52, a 16-year newspaper employee, is a former circulation accounting clerk. She was fired in July 2011 after a company audit revealed she stole $104,153 from July 2009 to July 2011.

Ancira’s attorney, David Bass, said Ancira disputes the audit figure.

He said the actual restitution amount will be determined by a presentencing report.

In a plea bargain Monday, prosecutors allowed Ancira to plead guilty to third-degree felony theft instead of a second-degree felony.

The third-degree felony alleges Ancira stole more than $20,000 but less than $100,000.

Prosecutors recommended she be placed on probation.

Ancira sold her home to help make restitution to Robinson Media Co., which sold the Tribune-Herald to Berkshire-Hathaway in June 2012.


Police have beef with shoplifting suspect

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police have a beef with a man they say stole meat worth $2,700 from three Safeway stores in Portland, Oregon.

Police say 53-year-old Barry T. Sanders was caught on video hiding meat in a shopping cart at least 13 times in July and August, then leaving the grocery stores without paying.

KOIN reports (http://bit.ly/1vhdtBU) Sanders was arraigned Tuesday on theft charges in Multnomah County Circuit Court. He didn’t enter a plea and will be assigned a lawyer on Wednesday.

theft (5)How do you protect yourself from a mob of shoplifters? Is there a solution? Calling the police will eventually get things going, but rarely do they arrive in time to stop the shoplifting. Even an individual shoplifter can get away many times before he gets caught, and the loses your store or business suffers is big. Prevention and investing in shoplifting devices can be a helpful method for your store to prevent shrinkage and a deterrent to employees and other shoplifters from stealing from your store.


The Future Of Shopping In Three Trends

Back in 2012, I wrote a piece titled, Five Trends Driving Traditional Retail Towards Extinction. Looking back, I’m generally happy to see that the trends I examined are still valid, though “extinction” might be a little strong.

But the retail and e-commerce industries still interest me and living in New York provides a firsthand view into the petri dish that many of these companies use to experiment. So almost two years later, I’ve revisited the space to focus on three more trends that are changing the way we shop. (I’m leaving out an exploration of mobile for the moment, since it’s probably worth its own post.)

The Macro View

First, a brief look at the bigger picture.

Last month marked Amazon’s 20th anniversary, which is kind of amazing to think about since e-commerce seems both very new and indispensable at the same time. Either way, the world has had plenty of time to digest the trend.


Local Fox Anchor Arrested for Shoplifting; Fiancé Arrested for Arson

CBS 13 in Sacramento reports that a local news anchor was arrested for theft while in an unrelated case her fiancé was arrested for arson. Fox 40 news anchor Sabrina Rodriguez was arrested and charged with three felony counts of shoplifting while her fiancé, Nicholas Gray, is in jail on drug and arson charges.

On May 6, 2014, Rodriguez and Gray’s Sacramento home was ablaze; in the ensuing attempts by firefighters, one fire fighter was injured. The couple told authorities at the time that the cause of the fire was a stove exploding.

According to file footage from CBS 13, fire battalion Chris Ortiz said at the time: “The occupants were extremely lucky to get out. If they would have hesitated probably a minute or so they might be crawling out the back windows or we might be extricating them from the home.”

Gray was booked Thursday into the Sacramento County jail on charges of arson, battery, manufacturing meth, and possession of marijuana or hashish for sale. Investigators would not confirm the charges were related to the fire at his home, CBS 13 reports.


Police: Shoplifting flash mobs storm convenience stores

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. —

Police in Washington state are looking for a group of about 40 teens who allegedly stormed a Shell service station in Federal Way early last Sunday, KIRO-TV in Seattle reported.

“It’s pretty bad. … When 30, 40 people come into the store, I don’t think even cops can do anything right away,” said Ranji Rai, who owns the store. He said his clerk was alone at the time and couldn’t do anything to stop the crowd.

The clerk, Sukhvinder Singh, said that at first, he tried to stop the teens at the door, but they pushed through. Then Singh tried to grab one of the teens’ jackets, but another person threw a soda at him and just missed, Singh said.

According to Federal Way police, another group targeted a 7-Eleven about a mile away, only an hour and a half after the incident at the Shell station. KIRO-TV included portions of the surveillance videos in their newscast.


If They Steal $1,000 That’s All I Lost….. Right?

theft (13)Whether it involves employee theft, shoplifting or some other real loss, you actually lost a lot more than $1,000. And I mean real money. One of the advantages I have as the former Senior Loss Prevention Executive for several major companies, is that I bring a larger scope of experience to you, the small and medium business owner or manager.

Okay, so the thief got away with $1,000 of your merchandise but that ​​is ​​not all you lost. That merchandise had to be purchased, paid for, shipped, handled by your staff and made available for sale to your legitimate customers. In many cases we do not factor these tasks and the ever tighter profit margins we work with into the loss equation.

As an example, let’s say that your profit margin after taxes, labor and other expenses like rent, electricity, gas…. is 1.5%. Actually this is an average for most US retailers. Some have a higher profit margin others like grocery stores average less than 0.5%.

So take your loss, in this case $1,000 and divide by your margin, again in ​​this case 1.5% (.015). The result is $66,666.67. That is your actual loss. You are going to have to sell another $ 66,666.67 simply to BREAK EVEN on a $1,000 loss! How many more merchandise items will ​​you have to purchase and sell to do this? And remember that is only to break even on the $1000 loss NOT to make a profit.

Oh wait a minute – you have insurance. Few policies cover this kind of loss. If they do, try putting in for several of these cl​aims. You will probably find yourself looking for a new insurance carrier after they drop you or raise your rates through the roof.

There is only one way to do this and be profitable: prevention. You must stop losses before they occur. In addition your loss prevention efforts cannot consume all of your time or resources. Otherwise you lose focus on your sales. But the LP effort has to be a part of your standard operating environment, not on and off. You would not turn off the power to your sign every other day to save money. Why would you do that with loss prevention?

The really great news is that a solid loss prevention program is neither expensive nor difficult for the small to medium retailer. You should loo​k at loss prevention in three areas that are all working together at the same time.

First is Training & Awareness – have you set the standard right from the very beginning with your employees? Do they know what is expected of them and their performance including their responsibilities to protect your assets? Do ​​they understand you do not tolerate any theft by them or their friends regardless of size?

Second – do you have an operational audit or review of your operations? Do people actually know and believe that you look in depth into your operations and losses. Are you ACTUALLY holding them responsible for their performance?

Last is investigation. You must look into and understand why a loss has occurred. Then take action to keep it from occurring that way again. Thinking that it will go away or even worse fix it by itself is ridiculous. IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.

All of then feeds back into Training and Awareness. Once you start this cycle if will feed on itself. You will ​​even find that your core employees will pick it up and go with it. Customer Service Shoplifters To Death

theft (12)Yes, it’s true, we sell Checkpoint Systems and Alpha High Theft Solutions. However, equipment is not the total solution to the shoplifting problem. The total solution is a package deal. You have to combine equipment with effective customer service techniques. The retailer who forgets this, stands to spend a lot of money and not fully solve their shoplifting problem. That is one of the reasons we include extensive anti-shoplifting training for our customers (OK that was a shameless plug).

How can you use customer service to prevent shoplifting? Shoplifters must have some privacy to steal. This applies to all shoplifters’ – impulse, amateur and professionals.  Therefore shoplifters tend to shun your attempts to service them. So become even more resolute in your customer service. It is a no loose scenario.  Good customers love customer service. It is one of the reasons they shop with you over a big box store where customer service is someone who knows absolutely nothing about the products. You and your staff do. Lavish the attention on them.

But, and there always seems to be an exception, many shoplifters are just as determined.  So try throwing in a few other customer service techniques.  If you see or suspect that a “customer” has concealed say a blouse, ask them if they would like to see a scarf to go with the blouse. Think about what happens in their mind when you ask this question. A legitimate customer that actually put the blouse back on the rack (and you did not see that) is not thinking about theft. They are experiencing retail therapy.  Their mind will think, “oh I was, am looking at blouses and this retailer is helping me….very cool!”

The shoplifter on the other hand experiences something else completely. They interpret that as you saw them conceal the blouse. In many cases they will simply pull it back out and hand it over. Personally I would try to then insist that they buy it as it does match their eyes, hair color, complexion or even the new shinny bracelets the nice Police Office is happy to supply. I mean, if they wanted it that bad anyway and the fact that we retailers are all those evil money grubbing capitalists then why not get a sale out of it. However, at this point I would think cash is the only payment option I would offer.

The fact is you can use this technique regardless of your type of retail goods. So if this works soooo well Mr. Bregar then why do I need you and that Checkpoint and Alpha stuff? The equipment is there for when your staff to customer ratio is way off during those busy times when you cannot be everywhere. The shoplifters know this. The Checkpoint System, Checkpoint labels and tags and Alpha products take up the slack. They are on duty 24/7. No sick days, time off, vacation, looking the other way…

A Victimless Crime?

theft (1)Shoplifting has always been viewed as a victimless crime. It is one of the reasons why shoplifters justify what they are doing. They view their theft as a crime against a faceless company where no one specifically gets hurt. The majority of these shoplifters would never steal from a friend, or commit another kind of home invasion or burglary. That would be violating a specific person, and much harder to morally justify.

When you work retail, you understand just how far from the truth it really is. Shoplifting is not a victimless crime. Its victims are actually frequent and plentiful, starting with the store owners and employees. These are the ones who have to bear the majority of the effects shoplifting has.

To start with, small business owners often do not have the inventory turns needed to effectively diminish the financial impact of stolen merchandise. Unlike companies with thousands of locations that collectively absorb the financial impact of higher cost of goods and lost sales, small businesses rely on their slim profits from maximizing every dollar spent in their stores.

Employees are the next to feel the pains of shoplifting. Hours can be cut, reducing their personal paychecks. Store maintenance, heating and cooling can also be reduced as finances are moved back into inventory replenishment. The overall morale of a store can be reduced, making for an unpleasant place to work.

Customers are the last to feel the brunt of shoplifting, but they still feel it. They are the ones whose time and patience are wasted looking for items the store should have, but doesn’t. They frequently unload their displeasure onto the employees who already have a reduced morale. Customers start taking their sales elsewhere; shopping at stores they can rely on.

Even though a shoplifting crime does not target a specific person, it is by far not a victimless crime.


The Typical Characteristics of Embezzlers

theft (8)The crime of embezzlement is on the rise. There are many reasons for why it’s on the increase. One of the reasons is that business owners and managers don’t envision the embezzler as a potential criminal. The average embezzler doesn’t fit the idea of a stereotypical offender, therefore, supervision becomes lax. This leaves people and situations not monitored as well as they should be.

Embezzlers share more characteristics with the general populace than with other criminals. As a result, it’s important for managers and business owners to understand the profile of the average embezzler. Here are their most typical characteristics.

Age –They’re usually older than other criminals, past 30, and they begin their criminal activity at a much later age. Those who’re classified as major embezzlers often begin in their early 40s. (2011 Marquet Report on Embezzlement).

Family situation – Most are married with traditional family situations. They usually come from intact and stable families of origin.

Education – As a rule, they have higher levels of education than the average criminal.

Race – The majority of perpetrators are white.

Employment/Criminal History – Nearly all of them are first-time offenders with clean employment histories. Over 80% have never been charged with a crime or terminated from a job. (2012 Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Report)

Job Responsibility – It’s estimated that professional and managerial staff commit 40%, clerical, bookkeepers and other employees commit 40% and senior officers and owners commit 20% of embezzlements.

The size of the loss is frequently related to the position the perpetrator holds. The median loss committed by owners/executives is $573,000, by managers $180,000 and by employees $60,000. (2012 Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Report)

Gender – Until recently 70% of embezzlers were older males who’d attained a position of trust and authority, which provided the chance to commit the crime. But, with more women reaching positions of authority and responsibility, the percentage of female embezzlers has increased to 64% in the last several years. However, men on average steal significantly more than women. (2011 Marquet Report on Embezzlement).

Psychological Issues – Embezzlers usually don’t have an antisocial personality, which is much more common in other criminals. However, they do have mental health issues, most notably gambling problems (30%) and depression and/or anxiety, which may be as high as 80%.

It’s human nature to trust those who we perceive as being like us. Unfortunately, there’ll always be people who’ll take advantage of human nature. Managers can better protect their businesses by educating themselves about the typical characteristics of embezzlers.

Video catches court employee stealing cash

Police say a video showed a former Cobb County court employee pocketing money from the drug court.

That worker will soon find herself spending time behind bars and ironically reporting to the same drug-testing office where she once worked

For a decade, Tomasita Reavis worked in the drug court office. The 57-year-old woman was a trusted employee, married to a corrections officer.

But when the county’s drug unit planted cameras in the office to investigate missing cash, they almost immediately spotted Reavis sliding some of the cash that was supposed to be deposited in taxpayers’ accounts into her own purse and wallet.

Over just a few days on six occasions, Reavis would count up the cash, sending most to the bank, but keeping a wad for herself.

Reavis refused to tell the judge Wednesday why she did it or what she did with the money. She pleaded guilty to six theft counts.

Her attorney said Reavis was an honest person who simply succumbed to temptation.


Police: Shoplifting ring strikes again

PEABODY — Peabody police arrested one person of a suspected shoplifting ring from Boston yesterday afternoon, but two others managed to escape.

Jadea Duntin, 26, of 79 Rosseter St., Dorchester, was arrested at 2:50 p.m. on charges of shoplifting more than $250 worth of items from J.C. Penney at Northshore Mall, driving with a suspended license, and possession of instruments used for burgling.

Police said Duntin is part of a group of shoplifters known to the store’s loss prevention unit. The unit called police after recognizing three women who were shoplifting more than $1,000 at the time. The report stated that the women recently stole $5,000 worth of items.

Duntin was in possession of wire cutters, police said, which they believe she used to cut tags off items.

The two remaining women fled the scene at high speed with a child in a black Nissan Altima in the direction of the Cheesecake Factory. As of press time, they were still at large.

How to prevent summertime employee theft

With the summer season getting into full swing, many businesses are readying for one of the busiest times of year. Amidst the paperwork and new inventory, it is equally important to be mindful of the employee theft risk associated with this big business boost.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 75 percent of employees steal from their workplace and many do so repeatedly. For both summer businesses as well as traditional businesses with a high summer season, the use of seasonal employees is part of the business culture. Studies suggest seasonal employees have increased theft rates creating a dual challenge for business owners and managers – dealing with a large volume of business in a short period of time and managing risk to the business.

While there is no way to eliminate the risk of employee theft, a business can look to ways to minimize it. A business owner or manager can minimize the risk by understanding factors that can lead to employee theft and making adjustments in their business operations. There are multiple factors to consider; but rationalization, opportunity, and the expectation of getting caught are chief amongst them.


5 Clauses to Include in Summer Employment Contracts

Summer is here, and business own should be polishing their employment contracts for seasonal hires.

Here are the five must-have clauses for any summer employment contract:

1. Length of Contract (Term of Employment).

It’s important to be as specific as possible in defining the duration of a summer employee’s contract, so that there is no ambiguity as to when the position ends. A termination clause can also be folded into this area of an employment contract, specifying how either you or the summer hire can terminate employment with or without notice.

2. Compensation.

Don’t just gloss over this step. Be very exacting in describing the kind of compensation that a summer hire will receive. Include whether the employee will be paid hourly, salaried, or per completed project, as well as any benefits included with the position. This may be a good place to include your summer hire’s vacation policy, which does not have to include paid time off.
