Open Source Shopping- Retail Theft Prevention

In addition to the traditional retail theft prevention that is provided by Checkpoint systems, Alpha Security Atlas Displays create an open and inviting experience e for your customers.
It has been proven over and over that when a customer can access a product (especially electronics) they are more likely to purchase that item. If a product does not have a working display model that a customer can use, they will find a different retailer that does. That does not mean that you can’t stop shoplifting while your customers are trying out a display model.
The Atlas display allows for such a marriage of retail theft prevention and customer access through these well thought out features:
Works with tablets, mobile phones, cameras, GPS devices and MP3 players. System provides power to merchandise so shoppers have the full experience. Security is monitored through multiple trigger points. Internal alarm and flashing LED indicates if product is tampered with. Back-up battery maintains constant security if power is lost or power supply is interrupted. Adhesive on the base mounts securely to any flat surface without drilling holes. Programmable security key will arm or disarm system — up to 20 keys can be programmed for each stand. Backed by a global service and support network. Compliments Alpha Security’s line of S3 solutions.

The World On His Shoulders- Anti Shoplifting

In Greek Mythology, Atlas was tasked with holding the heavens up to separate them from Earth. Based on that story, whenever we see someone carrying large emotional loads, we often describe them as an Atlas. They are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. It is fitting that the Atlas anti shoplifting display carries a load both literally and figuratively.
The Atlas is a low profile stand that displays your store’s electronics like tablets, cameras, GPS and mobile phones. This self contained unit sits atop your display counters and holds your electronic in place. The cord system that is contained within the stand allows customers to access the product more completely while continuing to provide retail theft protection.
If you are trusting anti shoplifting products like the Atlas to stop shoplifting, the product needs to do more than retail theft prevention. It also needs to be an enhancement to your sales model.
The Atlas has a built in power display that provides power to your display electronics. This way the customer can actually use the products and compare models literally side by side. A back up battery provides power in case of an outage so you are never left without.

What You See Is What You Get- Anti Theft Devices

Anti theft devices provide the visual deterrent needed to prevent retail theft by most of the common shoplifting groups. For some, it might seem counterproductive to give away your secrets as to what kinds of security you use to prevent retail theft.
For most amateur or opportunistic shoplifters, this is not necessarily the case. You see, when someone is looking to steal, they are going to look for the path of least resistance. If they do not see any anti shoplifting tools, they assume the path is clear of any type of resistance.
This makes a store a bigger target, or a product more likely to be stolen. When you start to use cheap tags and cheap labels to prevent retail theft you are showing the potential thieves what they are up against in order to steal successfully.
When faced with additional obstacles to get the product out the door with out being caught, most of these non-professional shoplifters will either abandon the thought of stealing, or they will go someplace else to steal their goods.

Keep Them Posted- Anti Shoplifting

A large part of retail theft prevention actually comes in the form of education. That means educating your employees on why you use Checkpoint Labels and Checkpoint Tags. It also means educating them on what behaviors a shoplifter demonstrates, and also what they can do to deter the shoplifter from stealing. The more information your employees have to be a part of the solution, the better the chances that they will make attempts to better your business.
Sharing this same information with potential shoplifters is equally as important as a deterrent. That doesn’t mean your employees shout across the store that they think a customer is a shoplifter and they are being watched.
It means that Checkpoint Labels and Checkpoint Tags are not hidden. They are placed strategically and obviously so shoplifters are aware that the store is being protected. While you don’t want to put these anti shoplifting devices in places where customer service and care will be negatively affected, a balance between the two extremes needs to be found.
The same thing goes with signage stating things like “shoplifters will be prosecuted” and “the premises is under video surveillance”.
These signs should be displayed prominently so the information can be readily shared with anyone thinking that they might come steal from your store. A front window is an ideal place, as is the inside of a fitting room. Be careful to not completely plaster your store with these signs and risk alienating your real customers.

Organized Retail Crime- Retail Theft Prevention

The point of organized retail crime is to take advantage of other retailer’s merchandise for his or her own benefit. These thieves do not care if they get their haul in one big job, or in multiple smaller ones. While major retailers have multiple locations and larger quantities of desirable merchandise making them attractive to organized retail crime, they also have more security and theft prevention resources available to help combat those thefts and inventory losses.
Smaller retailers, who may not have the most desirable selection of merchandise, may actually find themselves more prone to organized retail crime because their stores are more vulnerable without inventory security devices, or other EAS and camera systems.
National estimates are around 30 billion dollars worth of losses at the hands of Organized Retail Theft crimes. You heard that right, 30 BILLION dollars in losses.
That is massive. It is also indicative that these crimes are so widespread that they will affect every retailer, both large and small. The biggest take away is that organized retail crime will seek out the greatest path of least resistance.
If you have any merchandise at all that can be resold, or otherwise profited from, and you have minimal store security, you can bet that organized retail crime will be a factor in your store.

Avoidance Behavior- Retail Theft Prevention

There is a new thought emerging around how customers shop at different locations based around their perceived safety. The studies are centered on a fear of crime in ordinary shoppers. The higher the fear, the more likely for avoidance behavior- basically a shopper will either altogether avoid a store, or will get in and out really quickly.
Both avoidance behaviors result in a loss of sales for the retailer in question. Obviously if customers will not even enter a store, there is no way to sell them anything. If a customer comes in, but rushes to get out, all carefully laid out merchandising plans, sales and promotions do no good to generate additional sales- the customer is simply oblivious to them.
What you can do to prevent avoidance behavior of this kind is to create a safe environment for your customers and your employees. Make sure parking lot lights are on (and working) when it starts to get dark. Use EAS tags and other kinds of theft prevention like cameras and domes to deter shoplifters and other criminals from even entering your store. Build a relationship with your local police department, so they routinely stop by to say hi and make sure you are safe.

Customer Embarrassment – Checkpoint Tags

An online store is also a great way to reach a whole new customer base. Unless you are doing extremely well, you are probably not at a point where you need a separate and distinct shipping warehouse to fulfill your online orders.
That means you are fulfilling orders out of your existing stock, from your existing brick and mortar locations making it even more important to make sure your employees are packaging orders correctly.
They need to ensure the product’s size, color, brand and quantity are what have actually been ordered. Your employees also need to make sure that any security tags have been removed or deactivated.
Based upon the product being shipped can effect the potential for customer service fail when the customer receives the product. Soft tags are less likely than hard EAS tags to cause a major issue if they are not deactivated before shipping, but they may still cause some problems for the customer.
If you sell clothing that has a source tag embedded into the product (like some name brand running shoes are) it can cause problems for the customer later on. They might not realize there is a security tag in their shoes, and can potentially set off security systems as they wear these shoes out and about. This can lead to multiple embarrassing alarms, and ill will toward your store for putting them in that situation.

Pulling Double Duty- Anti Theft Devices

Do you know that anti theft devices can help you eliminate or reduce employee theft in your business? It took me a long time to figure that out. It wasn’t until I had some actual training in loss prevention that I realized how truly multifunctional cheap tags and cheap labels could be for your retail security.
I knew that anti theft devices were primarily designed for anti shoplifting purposes. What I didn’t know was how these same devices are a theft deterrent for employees. You see when an employee looks to steal merchandise, they go through a very similar process that a shoplifter does. They look for a quiet moment when no one is watching to commit their act. They look to figure out how to get the merchandise out of the store. They also look to see how which merchandise would be best to take.
If the merchandise has no anti shoplifting alarms attached, then the merchandise is more desirable. It will be easier to get out the door undetected by other employees or management.

What A Mess- Retail Security

I recently went to a store to buy some new accessories for an upcoming event. Little did I know that this shopping trip would be a lesson in how the lack of anti theft devices makes a huge difference in how clean a store is.
Because this particular store had been completely ransacked in their jewelry department. It was almost impossible to find what I needed. There were earrings missing, or lying on the ground in complete disarray.
Eventually, I just ended up leaving without making a purchase. It was frustrating as a customer to have such rotten luck finding what I needed. It was even more frustrating having worked in retail security because I know that the simple addition of cheap labels and cheap tags could have prevented some of this mess.
This wasn’t so much an issue of employee engagement or merchandise recovery practices. This mess was because shoplifters had complete access to the merchandise. Without the threat of retail security, shoplifters were tearing the jewelry department up. They knew they could get away with whatever they wanted. Early Warning System- Checkpoint Security System

I worked at a major upscale department store. We had several entrance doors in our location, and I had gone to start locking them all up as we closed down for the night. As I was walking to lock up the last door, I heard the security alarms go off. I looked up and saw five guys with their arms loaded with expensive handbags running out the door.
The security tags on the handbags set the alarm off notifying us of the problem. Unfortunately, these security tags did not deter these professional thieves. They knew they were going to be fast getting in and out, and would set the alarm off as they went.
What they didn’t count on was the camera system we had documenting their every move. Even though they disregarded the tags, the alarm let us know what was happening.
We were able to use this information to build a case with the police department, which led to their arrest. Had we not had the tags on to set the alarm off, we would not have noticed that night that the handbags had been stolen.
That would have given the criminals ample time to get away. If we had not known what time (or day) the loss took place, we might not have been able to track down the video, which is what the police needed to make their arrest.
