Preventing retail theft in a ‘big box store’

If you have never worked Loss Prevention in a ‘big box store’ you may find yourself wondering why exactly they would need such things like anti-theft devices in the first place.  Most stores that are of the ‘big box’ model require memberships to shop there and the vast majority of their products are massive in size or quantity making the possibility of theft difficult.  In a way such store models seem to prevent retail theft just by design.

The truth of the matter is that just because you may need a membership to shop somewhere doesn’t mean you need a membership to steal from the same place.  ‘Big box’ stores need to think about anti-shoplifting measures just as much as any department or specialty store does.  In fact, because of their business model it actually means there are a great deal more items in their inventories that require suites of anti-theft devices to protect them as such places are often the targets of ORC groups or ‘grab and dash’ criminals.  Don’t ever think there is some perfect business model that absolutely protects your store from theft without the need for anti-shoplifting measures.  You can never be too sure who might come walking through your store entrance and running out with an unsecured television.

Retail security with limited resources

I have been brought into a new store recently as a loss prevention supervisor and have found my resources extremely lacking and my workload practically back breaking.  The store has little in the way of available anti theft devices, no retail security cameras to truly speak of, and the staff is made up of people who are either internal theft suspects or completely clueless in the ways of shrink reduction practices.

I know that I am not the first loss prevention professional to encounter such a daunting situation upon being assigned a store.  In fact it is not the first time that I, myself, have been put in such a situation.  However there are those among our ranks, usually the newer members of the profession, who might balk or retreat when faced with such obstacles.  For those in the latter camp I have two pieces of advice that might make things easier to tackle.

The first is common sense.  No matter how bad things in your store might be, don’t try to tackle every problem at once.  Take your issues one at a time in a priority of worst-case to easy-peasy and you’ll save yourself a ton of headaches.

Secondly, don’t let a lack of resources stop you.  Rather, get inventive with what you have at your disposal.  No cameras?  Enforce a 100% tagging policy.  Not enough staff?  Let your cashiers be your eyes and ears.  Improvisation is key to solving problems.

Get A Fresh Start

Spring is in the air. Everywhere I turn, I see signs of new life. It is an invigorating feeling to think of all of the new and exciting possibilities. It’s not just from the trees getting their new leaves, or the flowers blooming along the streets. It is also inside the stores.

The new fiscal year is well underway, and several stores have already begun their annual inventories. Once the tedious task of counting and auditing the inventory reports have passed, I find I have the same sense of renewal.

It’s a chance to start over with your retail security programs. Out with the old and in with the new. This is when you get to see what worked and what didn’t. Scrap those programs that didn’t make an impact. Start looking at adding in new programs like incorporating anti theft devices.

Use this time as an opportunity to start fresh. There are cheap tags and cheap labels that can protect your merchandise. They are a financially plausible anti shoplifting solution.

Give your old worn out plans the boot. Bring in new ideas and new anti theft devices to solve your shrink reduction needs.

Routine Activity Theory: Checkpoint Systems are the Guardian

When examining methods to implement a successful retail theft prevention program, it’s important to understand why an offense occurs and why certain measures are effective and others fail to deter crime. Developed by Marcus Felson and Lawrence E. Cohen, Routine Activity Theory draws on the principles of Rational Choice Theory and Situational Crime Prevention. A delinquent act occurs through the interaction of three necessary conditions: offenders (shoplifters), targets (merchandise), and places they meet (retail stores). Further, each condition has a controller because they can influence each condition: handler, guardian, or manager.

Handlers are individuals with whom an offender has an emotional attachment and can shape their actions. Guardians are responsible for protecting the targets, such as security guards or Checkpoint security tags. Lastly, managers are the retailers, owners, and employees who affect the functioning of the retail environment. According to RAT, a crime is likely to occur if an offender meets a target in a place that lacks any controls. For the purposes of this anti-shoplifting discussion, guardians are the more crucial control for retail theft prevention.

Most retailers can’t direct an offender’s actions or determine if they have proper role models in their life. In addition, in a competitive and litigious society, managers can only manipulate the environment to a certain extent without impeding an honest customer’s enjoyable shopping experience. When using RAT to assess retail theft prevention measures, retailers can deter shoplifting most effectively by applying the guardian controller to protect merchandise. When applying this controller in terms of anti-shoplifting efforts, the most valuable guardian takes the form of Checkpoint security tags to protect high-risk targets. When taking advantage of solutions offered by Checkpoint systems, stores aren’t becoming places where offenders and targets meet without controls.

Is It All About The Fancy Package?

When I was growing up, I remember seeing generic brand items in the grocery store. They were just a white-labeled can or box with the product in big, bold black letters. It was not a very attractive package to look at. Even at a young age, I was very skeptical about how good the contents really were.

Over the years, companies have realized that if they want to sell and item, they need to have attractive packaging. Now just about every retailer from food to clothes to gadgets and gizmos have their own store branded items; their generics, if you will.

Retail security is no different from all the other markets out there. You can find generic versions of name brand anti theft devices anywhere. Some are beautifully packaged, while some are still in black and white minimalism.

The key is to find cheap tags and cheap labels that are reliable. Be wary of foreign made tags and labels, as they may only look attractive on the outside. Their inner workings may end up being less than desirable.

Don’ t rely on just the name, or fancy packaging. Use a trusted source for your EAS labels and tags.

Don’t think you can’t compete

As a small business owner, it can be very difficult to try and compete with larger big box chains. They often have more resources with buying power and price control than what you might. They also have a more recognizable name to draw in customers. One things for sure though, shoplifters aren’t just limited to the big boxes. They are more than willing to steal from you without a second thought.

Don’t be left trying to employ the same anti shoplifting tactics that work for the big box stores. Their budgets might price you out of the water, leaving you more vulnerable as you try to prevent retail theft. Instead, use anti theft devices designed with your budget in mind. Use cheap tags and cheap labels that are reliable and budget friendly.

You don’t need to spend extravagant money to protect your store from falling pry to shoplifters. Let the big boxes fritter away their money on the expensive name brand tags and labels. Use the low cost versions. They are low cost because they are made here in the USA, not because they are chintzy knock-offs.

A Disturbing Situation

Several months ago I began working for a department store that was unlike my other positions because they didn’t utilize any type of asset protection technology, while my previous employers all used some form of a Checkpoint security system. What was difficult about working for this store was not only did their retail theft prevention strategy rely solely on apprehensions, but as a result of their lack of security tags, the store attracted a distinctive type of thief that I had encountered sporadically in my previous years of experience, but not in this volume. The troubling situation I’m referring to is adult females shoplifting while their children are with them.

As I mentioned, I had encountered cases involving mothers and their offspring acting as accomplices and detained the occasional parent with their kid in tow. However, I had never witnessed the kind of neglect, endangerment, and blatant disregard for a child’s well-being as I did at this retailer. These women committed acts of retail theft that led to situations that confused and terrified their children and often jeopardized their safety during the arrest. One subject hid a pair of denim jeans under her baby carrier in the stroller, another threw a hat in her diaper bag, and one woman even concealed jewelry in her infant’s diaper. Upon detainment, we would have to not only deal with a difficult shoplifter, but also screaming toddlers and the question of what to do with them when mommy goes to jail with the police.

I believe that the frequency of these incidents were the result of this store’s lack of a comprehensive retail theft prevention strategy. These mothers could steal the high-price merchandise available at other department stores, but this retailer didn’t pose the problem of defeating a Checkpoint security system in front of their kids. In addition, shopping with children in tow tends to set the thief at ease that they don’t look suspicious and may deflect the attention of an inexperienced LP associate.

The Most Controllable Expense

It has long been said that payroll is the most controllable expense a store has. You have control over the wages spent, the hours worked, allowable overtime, and can increase and reduce as needed. Sounds like it makes sense.

I would have to disagree. When companies are reducing their work force to bare bones standards, some retailers are dangerously only having one employee in a store at any given point in time. I think that is just setting someone up to be hurt, or worse.

Instead of cutting payroll, try cutting out your shrink. It is easier than you might think. Using cost efficient cheap tags and cheap labels for your retail security is almost guaranteed to reduce your inventory losses. Anti theft devices are notoriously effective deterrents against theft.

Since most stores do not have any way to financially allow for an inventory loss, that dollar comes right off the bottom line. A significant reduction in shrink can make a huge impact in bringing those bottom line profits back up to par.

Don’t put your store and your employees at risk but reducing your payroll to the point where it is almost nonexistent. Reduce your shrink instead through retail security and anti theft devices.

EAS Tags, Not Going Away Any Time Soon

Electronic Article Surveillance is at the heart of most retail theft prevention programs. Checkpoint security tags have been a long-standing staple in anti shoplifting devices, and rightly so. These little tags are widely known in the thieving community as problematic devices to avoid. They take way to long to deactivate, if ever. Checkpoint security tags draw way to much attention when they set off any of the Checkpoint security system alarms. These little plastic UFOs have thwarted many an attempt to steal.

Of course the days of Checkpoint security tags only being little round UFO looking things attached to the bottom of a garment are long gone. Now, thanks to the innovation at Checkpoint Systems, these hard tags come in a multitude of shapes, sizes and colors. Each tag is geared to fit an individual product’s unique challenges for anti shoplifting counter measures.

Every one of Checkpoint systems’ EAS tags is designed to work simultaneously within a Checkpoint security system of soft tags, hard tags, towers and antennas. Because the hard tags are reusable, you don’t have to worry about excessive replenishment expenses. The tags are also designed to be reliable each and every time they are attached onto your products.

There are many great features and benefits to using EAS tags. It is safe to say that they will be around for a very long time.

The Cheapest Route to Retail Security

Anti-theft devices come in many forms. Among those variations are spider wraps, coat cables, hard tags, RF labels, shark tags, ink tags, keeper cases, the list goes on. Many anti-theft devices can become expensive, especially for smaller retailers and it may be difficult to get started with a large amount of overhead when you are just starting to use anti-shoplifting devices.

The most vital and inexpensive way to secure your merchandise is with cheap tags and cheap labels. EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) labels can be applied to almost any hard lines item, while EAS tags can be applied to almost every soft lines item. These two anti-shoplifting devices can be a great tool in retail security at almost any level of retailer and are very inexpensive and easy to use. They can be applied to any type of merchandise regardless of its shape or size and will not damage the product. EAS labels and tags are great deterrents to potential shoplifters, and can be a great way to alert you to potential theft activity in your store. If you are looking to just get started with retail security, or if you have been using anti-theft devices for years, cheap tags and cheap labels are where it’s at in retail security.
