Free Stuff

I absolutely love getting free samples in the mail. What a great way to try out a product that you might otherwise be unfamiliar with. I have actually changed my buying strategy after receiving free samples in the mail because I have discovered a great product that I would have otherwise bypassed.

This can be especially true about items that can equate to a major purchase. I will stick with what I know. Having a sample lets me explore the possibilities. Ever buy a car without test-driving it first? Yeah, me either.

So why would you think about buying retail security or anti theft devices without really knowing what you are getting? Why wouldn’t you take advantage of the test drive?

Getting free samples of the anti theft devices is more than just getting something for free to show up on your door step. It is about having a chance to explore another opportunity to enhance your existing retail security.

With just one quick little click of a mouse you can be well on your way to getting those samples sent out to you.

Build a reputation

Over the years of working in the service and retail industry, I have come to rely on my vendors very heavily. Building a good relationship with them has helped my operations run much more smoothly. When I need something, I usually have a specific person I can call who will help me out in a pinch.

In retail security, time is often of the essence. If surveillance or EAS equipment breaks down, I can’t wait for weeks or even a few days for a repair to be made. My anti shoplifting processes can completely unravel in that amount of time.

It is also important to have a reliable vendor to send out cheap labels, cheap tags, and other anti theft devices when I need them. If I have a product shipped in without any retail security, I need to act fast. The sooner I can soft or hard tag the item, the quicker I can get that item out of my stockroom and on to the floor for sales.

A reliable retail security company should have no problems accommodating your anti shoplifting needs.

Say Anti Shoplifting with Physical Security!!

Over the years of working in both large and small retailers it was always interesting to me to break down the actual shrink losses past just the dollars and overall percentages.

Frequently retailers spend so much time attending to internal theft that they forget that retail theft prevention should be applied to all forms of loss. Smaller business locations seem to be the victims of this tendency. External theft, shoplifting, can be perpetrated a variety of different ways. Regardless of the shoplifting method a business with a Checkpoint security system always has a deterrence effect upon potential shoplifters.

From various post theft interviews I have conducted over the years with shoplifters I have learned that the vast majority of thieves look for the easiest target. They avoid stores with Checkpoint systems. When the potential thief sees the pedestals at the front of the store and the checkpoint security tags attached securely to product they avoid the location like a car thief avoids a car with an alarm and/or the “club”. As one suspect stated “Why waste the time when I can go down the street and steal the same product from a company without any means of retail theft prevention?”.

Small businesses tend to believe that they either can’t afford the Checkpoint security system or that the Checkpoint system will not be cost effective. Many believe that they can handle retail theft prevention “in house” stating that their business is just too small to be on the radar of thieves. This tends to be a costly mistake. Once an inventory count has been conducted; a business owner is left with shrink loss that is compounded by the loss of the sale of the stolen product. By no means is any anti shoplifting tool guaranteed to eliminate external theft. When you buy and employ a Checkpoint system it is important that everyone on the sales team from part timers to management are trained to properly use the checkpoint security tags on specified product, audit all product categories that have been tagged, report and investigate any defeated tags and react correctly when the Checkpoint system alarm has been activated.

I have to admit in all of the companies that I worked for who properly utilized the Checkpoint systems; their shrink percentage breakdown of product categories that were tagged consistently and properly with Checkpoint security tags were always lower than other companies who sold the same product and did not use any anti shoplifting tools.

Physical security using an anti shoplifting tool such as the Checkpoint security system is a must if a business is to prevent external losses via shoplifting.

Retail Security: Keep Your Merchandise Safe

Store owners and managers must have an anti-shoplifting mindset, especially these days with the way the economy is. As a loss prevention officer I have seen a spike in shoplifting, employee dishonesty, and organized retail crimes. Making sure your retail security is up to par is essential in combatting the shoplifters that wander into your place of business. Not protecting your merchandise is just inviting thieves to line up and steal from your store.

Anti-theft devices are very inexpensive and have a huge return on investment. Cheap tags can be purchased and placed on clothing without any risk of damaging the product. Cheap labels can be purchased as well in order to compliment the tags by adding further visual deterrence. Wouldn’t it be great to scare off some would-be shoplifters from your store so that they go steal from a major competitor?

The goal is to make your store an anti-shoplifting establishment in order to maximize profit and minimize loss. Anti-theft devices serve many useful functions. However, the most useful function that I’ve noticed throughout my career is that store management get a better night’s sleep the night before inventory day.

Merchandise Walking Out

Many stores offer a department dedicated to kitchen and cooking supplies. Some of the items are small and easy to conceal; knives, kitchen utensils, etc. But other larger items, like blenders, specialty coffee machines and cookware sets, are harder to hide on your person. Unfortunately, some stores do not offer bags large enough to place these sizable items in. Allowing customers to walk out with these high-priced items without a bag only opens the door for shoplifters to do the same.

A shoplifter can easily walk into a store with these policies, pick up a $400 espresso machine, bypass the cashier and exit the store without paying. It almost seems quicker and easier than going through the process of concealing merchandise.

Working as an LP, I once experienced a reoccurring shoplifter who would come into my store, select a high-priced cookware set, and walk out to his car. This happened every few weeks for several months.  Eventually, we caught him red handed at the exit with an unpaid for set. When we asked him why he chose to steal this particular item over and over, he told us it was easy for him. Walking out of the store, unquestioned, with one high-valued item that could be returned later for store credit was easier than concealing multiple items.

An easy way to deter shoplifters is by attaching Anti-theft Devices to these larger items. Cheap Labels and Cheap Tags are an inexpensive fix to this problem. Also, having an associate or Retail Security personnel ensure these unbagged items are paid for by checking receipts at the door can help prevent this from happening in your store.

Too many broken tags

Over the past few weeks I have been noticing more and more instances where there are piles of anti-theft devices stashed in some dark corner of the store, broken and mangled beyond usability.  It is the calling card of semi-pro and professional shoplifters going about their business of circumventing our anti-shoplifting measures.  On top of the cost of the items they stole there is the added cost of replacing all the destroyed tags.  The loss of ten or twenty every week may not seem like much but it adds up fast.  Before you realize it you have no anti-theft devices left to adhere to new stock and the price to order new shipments might be outside the constraints of your budget.

Beyond trying to do the impossible (which is to completely shutdown ALL retail theft) the only things you can hope to do is mitigate your losses through renewed focus on your problem areas and looking for less expensive but still compatible replacement devices to supplement you anti-shoplifting needs.  I myself have had to replace almost every anti-theft device in one of my stores for the dual fact that so many had been defeated and they were so ridiculously outdated.

Saving Your Profits and Making Customers Feel Safe with Anti Shoplifting Devices

Shoplifting can put a major dent in your bottom line and these days many stores are turning to anti-shoplifting devices like EAS (electronic article surveillance) to help them safeguard their profits by deterring theft and boosting associate awareness. Retail theft prevention devices such as EAS pedestals can also provide a visual deterrent against theft, sending folks that want to steal other, less well protected stores. As an added bonus, knowing you are scaring off the criminal element gives your customers a greater feeling of personal safety and security.

As a loss prevention associate for a major retailer, I use anti-shoplifting devices regularly in my work to guard against major theft incidents like organized retail crime, where professional thieves come in and simply walk out the door with our high ticket items. Where I currently work, we use a Checkpoint security system, which consists of Checkpoint security tags, deactivation pads at the point of sale, and EAS pedestals by the doors that alarm if someone tries to carry out our merchandise.

The great thing about EAS systems, specifically Checkpoint security tags like the soft EAS tags, however, is that they can also be used to target specific merchandise that seems to come up missing more often, which sometimes changes from season to season. For instance, although theft of electronics, alcohol and fragrances might be high all the time and I might always have those products tagged with hard tags or Alpha spider wraps, the soft tags that are used with Checkpoint systems let me tag things that might be new that I think might be stolen or that are a new trend, like swimwear, drink mixes or baby formula, without investing in additional hard tags. The flexibility that I get from using retail theft prevention devices like soft EAS tags helps me more closely monitor my theft trends, keeps the criminals out of my building and helps safeguard my company’s bottom line.

Avoid creating a liability

When you talk about the financial world of assets and liabilities, you are talking about the financial risk involved in adding debt to your business. Even if your debts or loans are to procure a tangible product, that acquired “asset “ is still seen as a liability.

Retail security should never be viewed as a liability, in any sense of the word. Procuring anti theft devices should not put you farther into debt just to try and save your inventory dollars over the long term.

Having access to cheap tags and cheap labels that will work with either a Checkpoint or Sensormatic system will help you avoid creating a financial liability for your company.

Using cheap tags and cheap labels will strengthen your anti shoplifting programs. They will in turn help strengthen your bottom line profits by saving money on the investment in the tags and labels, in addition to the savings in your shrink line.

Turn your liabilities back into productive assets. Take advantage of the tags and labels that are designed to compliment your existing retail security system.

Just like peeling an onion

I worked with a corporate investigator that used to say employee theft cases are always like peeling an onion. The further down you get, the more it starts to stink and the more layers start to unfold.

In my experience, he was right. Employee theft cases keep retail security personnel on their toes. Just one employee out of control can equate to thousands, sometimes even tens of thousands of dollars in losses.

There is a way to help diminish employee theft. Use anti shoplifting tools on your merchandise.

Anti shoplifting tools like anti theft devices, are better known as EAS tags and labels. They are designed to provide a multi layer of defense against losses.

These tags and labels are primarily designed to help eliminate and deter shoplifters, but also work well in deterring employees from stealing.

If an employee were to steal an item that causes an alarm to go off, every one around them will take note. The employee has to come back and face the rest of the store, filled with people who know them.

A shoplifter’s greatest asset is anonymity. An employee who does not have the same tool is even more likely to get caught.

Don’t end the game before you even get started

One of the training tools I have used over the years with store employees is how to handle the store’s merchandise. I don’t mean how to avoid damages and move product without hurting himself or herself, or someone else (even though those are very important also!)

What I am talking about is how to move product that has soft labels as part of a Checkpoint security system. Checkpoint labels are designed to not be a customer disservice issue. They are designed to deactivate properly at the point of sale.

I all too often see stocking employees set a stack of product down at the counters of the registers. They do not realize that the deactivator pads will deactivate all of those Checkpoint labels even though there is not a sale in progress.

All of those Checkpoint labels are worthless if they have been deactivated. If the product goes out onto the sales floor from there, then the merchandise is vulnerable to shoplifters.

It’s discouraging to think that your own employees could be thwarting your anti shoplifting tools without even realizing it. A Checkpoint security system is only as good as you allow it to be. Don’t eliminate it before it even has a chance to work properly. Train your associate to understand how to keep it running.
