Add Cheap Labels and Cheap Tags to your Anti-Shoplifting Regime

Retail security involves many different working parts with regards to being anti-shoplifting, some of which are different kinds of retail anti-theft devices used to deter theft. Retail anti-theft devices can, and should, be used where necessary. Also they are very inexpensive and easy to use. Cheap labels and cheap tags can be placed on almost anything. There are so many different types of cheap labels and cheap tags made specifically for different types of merchandise. You can have tags that pin to clothing (without damaging them of course) and labels that stick onto boxes.

Cheap labels work well to compliment retail anti-theft devices by providing further visual warning to potential shoplifters. Let’s say a security tag is placed on a piece of clothing but it was placed incorrectly, or the clothing was folded in a way where the tag was not visible. Having a label present will let the shoplifter know that that particular item is protected.

Retail security is essential in maximizing profits. Cheap labels and cheap tags are out there for you to use to scare off and deter those who want to steal from you. By having an anti-shoplifting mindset coupled with great customer service, your store will be a money maker, not a money breaker.

Price Conscious Retail Security

Retail anti-theft devices come in many forms. Among those variations are spider wraps, coat cables, hard tags, RF labels, shark tags, ink tags, keeper cases, the list goes on. Many retail anti-theft devices can become expensive, especially for smaller retailers and it may be difficult to get started with a large amount of overhead when you are just starting to use retail anti-shoplifting devices.

The most vital and inexpensive way to secure your merchandise is with cheap labels and cheap tags. EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) labels can be applied to almost any hard lines item, while EAS tags can be applied to almost every soft lines item. These two retail anti-shoplifting devices can be a great tool in retail security at almost any level of retailer and are very inexpensive and easy to use. They can be applied to any type of merchandise regardless of its shape or size and will not damage the product. EAS tags and labels are great deterrents to potential shoplifters, and can be a great way to alert you to potential theft activity in your store. If you are looking to just get started with retail security, or if you have been using retail anti-theft devices for years, cheap labels and cheap tags are where it’s at in retail security.

Preventing Return Fraud in 3 Visits or Less

Using retail anti-theft devices can be an effective tool in preventing return fraud in stores with return policies geared toward providing good customer service. Return fraud has been and continues to be a major problem in retail security. ORC (Organized Retail Crime) groups target merchandise that is valuable and easy to steal, which is typically merchandise lacking retail anti-shoplifting devices. The groups take non-tagged merchandise in order to appear legitimate when making a return of the merchandise they had previously stolen.

Return fraud, when conducted in ORC situations, will usually occur in several visits to the store. When dealing with a chain of stores, these visits may occur one after another as they travel a central interstate or highway.

The first visit may only involve a subject staging merchandise in a specific and secluded area of the store. The merchandise will probably be the highest valued, easiest to conceal, non-tagged merchandise that they can find. This subject may stage the merchandise in bags prior to leaving.

The second visit will consist of the concealment and/or theft of the merchandise that was previously staged for them. This visit will probably take no longer than five minutes in the store and is difficult to detect.

The third visit is where the fraudulent return takes place where the subject will return the merchandise that was previously stolen. These visits will often consist of several different subjects, and all three steps may happen simultaneously with several sets of merchandise. The easiest way to combat return fraud is to protect your merchandise with retail anti-theft devices.

Checkpoint Labels and how to hide them

They are a common sight in retail theft prevention, those little white strips usually glued to the back of a fragrance or a plastic packaging for headphones, or even found tucked inside a DVD case.  They are Checkpoint Labels and they are among the more versatile anti-shoplifting tools available to those who wish to stop shoplifting in their store.  The problem is they are so common a sight that anyone who has ever walked into any retail establishment knows of their existence and those who are looking to steal from you know how to identify and defeat them.  The challenge is to find ways to hide the Checkpoint Labels in such a way that it seems as though they are not present at all.

It is a theme present in one of more fundamental concepts of retail theft prevention; creating the illusion that there is little or no security on hand to stop or watch a theft take place.  Making use of the small size of the Checkpoint Labels you can hide them almost anywhere; the seam of a jacket, the pockets of a pair of jeans, the brim of a hat, the possibilities are only limited by your vision.  By hiding these diminutive anti-shoplifting devices well enough you can create the illusion for shoplifters that they don’t need to use any tools or measures to defeat your labels which will prove otherwise when they pass through the gate of your Checkpoint security system.

Retail security when Resources are Limited

I was recently brought into a new store as a loss prevention supervisor and have found my resources extremely lacking and my workload practically back breaking.  The store has little in the way of available retail anti-theft devices, no retail security cameras to truly speak of, and the staff is made up of people who are either employee theft suspects or completely clueless in the way of shrink reduction practices.

I know that I am not the first loss prevention professional to encounter such a daunting situation while being assigned a store.  In fact it is not the first time that I, myself, have been put into such a situation.  However there are those among our ranks, usually the newer members of the profession, who might retreat when faced with such obstacles.  For those in the latter camp I have two pieces of advice that might make things easier to tackle.

The first is common sense.  No matter how bad things in your store might be, don’t try to tackle every problem at once.  Take your issues one at a time in a priority of worst-case to easy-peasy and you’ll save yourself a ton of headaches.

Secondly, don’t let a lack of resources stop you.  Rather, get inventive with what you have at your disposal.  No cameras?  Enforce a 100% tagging policy.  Not enough staff?  Let your cashiers be your eyes and ears.  Improvisation is the key to solving problems.

New venue, ancient equipment

It is a sad fact that in today’s job market and national economy a lot of us in the Retail Security or Operations field end up having to move about quite a bit.  More often than not the reason is that the company you were working for didn’t have the budget to keep you (or even your whole department) on the payroll.  I understand fully the need for corporations to ‘trim the fat’ in order to survive but the area they certainly shouldn’t be skimping on is Retail Security or a fairly current suite of Anti-Theft Devices.

A few months back I fell victim to the budget cut goblins at a certain retail firm but was quickly picked up by another company looking to completely rebuild their Loss Prevention department from the ground up.  They had a lot of great ideas as they pertained to Anti-Shoplifting setups and deterrence over apprehension but there was one major problem; not a single piece of their Anti-Theft Device inventory was younger than twenty years old.  In fact most of it was much older.

If you have a store that is trying to cut back on spending but not on Loss Prevention make sure they consider all the Anti-Shoplifting alternatives so you don’t feel like you are fighting high-tech, computer savvy thieves with old-fashioned, pre-calculator equipment.

If you are looking for ways to upgrade your stores retail security with anti theft devices, EAS labels and tags are one of the most common ways to go.  One of the reasons why they are such a common tactic is, simply put, because they work. Tags and labels are known throughout the retail community. Both thieves and customers are aware of them and are conscious about having them deactivated.

It really isn’t necessary to reinvent the wheel when it comes to retail security. By using tried and true methods, it saves you countless hours of frustration. You don’t have to be the one to use trial and error to see what works. Someone else has already done that for you.

You don’t have to be the one to send the message that you use anti shoplifting tactics. The EAS tags and labels do that for you. It is statistically proven that using EAS tags and labels reduce your shrink incurred. Both items and dollars can see a significant reduction in losses. Why would you look elsewhere for a solution for your retail security program? Stick with what you and everyone else know: EAS tags and labels work.

Why you should use Anti-Theft Devices…

We all know retail security is a tough and necessary game.  There are so many different factors in performing the job that it can seem daunting at times.  What makes it worse however, is that even after you have taken every possible anti-shoplifting precaution or have access to, and use, every anti-theft device on the planet, somehow there is someone out there who will still steal from you. The truth of the matter is,  It doesn’t matter HOW they do it or even WHY they do it, they just do it and that’s all we need to concern ourselves with.  That is why when we get beat (and don’t say you haven’t because we know that’s a lie) we need to learn what our weakness was and adapt to compensate for it.

An example would be a recent endeavor to stop a series of snatch and grab thefts occurring in our high-end children’s clothing area, which is unfortunately positioned within twenty feet of a main exit.  It took two hits to that area before we realized what was happening and required installing and affixing more anti-theft devices.  When that didn’t work we installed a brand new camera to catch him in the act.  That failed too.  He was too quick and there wasn’t enough time to spot him and apprehend him.

The solution, move this target section to the far end of the second floor.

When it comes to retail security you just need to think outside the box to succeed.

Where do I begin?

I don’t even know where to start. I ordered the free samples form RBC Security Solutions, expecting to have a small envelope delivered with one of their labels inside.

To my utter shock and amazement, there was not a single label inside. There were strips of six different types of labels! I didn’t even know where to start. It was not what I was expecting from a company trying to sell cheap labels and cheap tags.

There was more product than what I ever expected, and that makes it only that much easier to see what a great representation of anti theft devices this company makes.

When you can look and feel how the labels are going to work and look, it is easier to make decisions about how to enhance your retail security.

I could actually take a strip of labels to my thermal printer to make sure it would run through correctly, and they did! That is not something you could do if they had just sent out one lonely label in their bright green envelope.

Low Tech, High Quality

One of the anti shoplifting tools commonly used out in the retail sector is the Keeper Boxes. These boxes are absolutely ingenious in my book. I hadn’t really paid much attention to them until recently.

I think that is one of the best indicators of a successful anti shoplifting device. If your average paying customer can go about their shopping business and not have to pay attention to it, than you are better off for it. If the resources designed to stop shoplifting are hindering or stop selling, than you know you have a problem.

That is what is great about a Keeper box. If I need a pack of razor blades, I can very easily go up to the product throw one in the cart, and keep on shopping.

I recently had a chance to evaluate one of the Keeper boxes. What I hadn’t realized before was that for a seemingly simple concept, it was an extremely high quality way to stop shoplifting.

This wasn’t some flimsy plastic box that could be smashed or pried apart at the seams. This box was very well thought out. The alarm was hidden out of view, and could not be tampered with. It had a simple sliding mechanism to open up easily with the proper detachers, but was not so complicated that you run the risk of breaking pieces with repeated use.
