Don’t let your apprehensions get out of hand!

In retail theft prevention the key to a safe apprehension is simple; be smart. We have all seen the horror stories of apprehensions gone wrong, and situations where something gets out of hand causing dangerous circumstances. I myself have experienced situations that have come close to getting out of control had I handled it incorrectly. Situations like these can cause lawsuits, job loss, and can even be life threatening. The biggest thing to remember is that a bad apprehension is never worth its weight in what we could have recovered. Relying on your checkpoint systems can help keep you safe from apprehensions gone wrong.

Your first line of defense is to check for defeated anti- shoplifting devices when investigating a shoplifter. Finding defeated anti -shoplifting devices is extra proof that the shoplifter had the intent to steal. If you don’t find removed Checkpoint tags or Checkpoint Labels, did the checkpoint systems alarm sound when they left the store? If it didn’t, are you positive you saw concealment and had constant surveillance? Video review to ensure accuracy is not only easy with the right equipment, but can save you from a bad mistake if you missed something during your surveillance.

Be a good judge of the situation; always be aware of what is going on around you and be prepared to get out of the way if danger ensues. Having used the hands off approach for years, I have come to realize there is always another way. If words don’t work, rely on the authorities to locate the suspect for you with the information you have already obtained.

Cheap labels and Cheap Tags can be Extra Eyes and Ears for you

Retail security is about more than just acting like a security guard. That’s why you need all of the tools and resources you can get at your disposal. Retail anti-theft devices help keep your store in check from theft and fraud.

Retail anti-shoplifting tools like cheap labels and cheap tags act like extra eyes and ears inside the store. Because these retail anti-theft devices stay affixed to your merchandise you don’t have to monitor every single piece of inventory every single second your store is open.

These labels and tags will deter a shoplifter who is looking to steal an item they think no one is watching. When they realize there are EAS tags, they will often discard the item because they know they cannot get out the door unseen.

Even if they try to remove a retail anti-theft device, it will usually draw attention to their activity. You can hear the sounds of labels being ripped off of clothing. Hard tags take way too long to remove that someone is bound to notice them.

A Spike in Theft…

Ever since the downfall of the economy I have noticed a spike in thefts in my store. Retail security has become a major focus now because of this. During meetings my manager and I stress the importance of not only customer service, but utilizing retail anti-shoplifting tactics and retail anti-theft devices in order to make sure the only merchandise leaving store is paid for.

Two examples of retail anti-theft devices which are inexpensive are cheap labels and cheap tags. Cheap labels are anti-theft devices that stick to merchandise and warn would be thieves that you use anti-shoplifting tools. Cheap tags come in all different forms to fit the needs of your business and simply clip onto merchandise to act as a visual deterrent. If a tag is placed incorrectly where it is not visible, the label stating that that particular item is protected will help in scaring off shoplifters.

By making sure your retail security habits and retail anti-shoplifting mindset are a top priority, you will have a better night sleep the night before inventory.

Don’t let them add insult to injury….

When a thief steals merchandise from a retail establishment, it is called shoplifting. When the shoplifters try to return the stolen product for store credit, it is call an insult. The shoplifters are brazen enough to walk back into your store and place your inventory on the refund desk and expect that you give them money/ credit for those items.

Retail security needs to stop the problem before it gets thrown back in your face. The losses happen at the point of the theft, not the refund. Therefore, the activity needs to be stopped at the point of theft.

Retail anti-theft devices are one of the first and best lines of defense in your anti-shoplifting arsenal. Using cheap labels and cheap tags help deter shoplifters before they even get out the door.

If for some reason you do have shoplifters coming back with stolen product. Get as much information as you can. Ask for a valid picture ID, and note any vehicle make and model and plate numbers, if you can obtain them safely. All of this will help you build a case with local law enforcement to shut them down permanently.

It’s no use trying to muffle a Spider Wrap!

Checkpoint security tags, Spider wraps and other checkpoint systems can be a pretty useful tool when it comes to retail theft prevention. Checkpoint systems will deter most people from shoplifting, but every once and a while you get a shoplifter determined to defeat any anti-shoplifting methods you’ve used. Over the years I have acquired many stories about such endeavors. Today I’ll tell you a little story about the man in the pillows.

I was working late one night finishing up putting checkpoint security tags on a new shipment when I saw this guy walk in. The man was on a mission, and I was pretty sure that mission was to steal. I ran back to the office and started watching camera.. The man was clearly looking for something specific. Once he found the electronics, I could tell that was it. Luckily I knew everything there had retail theft prevention measures in place, so I wasn’t too worried about a grab and run. The next thing I knew the man had a digital camera in hand despite the anti-shoplifting methods we had in place.

He headed for the bedding area. Once he got there the man took out a knife and started going at the wire of the spider wrap! I couldn’t believe it. I grabbed the phone and immediately called the police. While I was on the phone the knife snapped through the wire and set off the spider wrap. I knew the spider wrap went off because the man was obviously panicking. He grabbed the wrap by its speaker and squeezed. It muffled the sound I’m sure, but it wasn’t enough. The man then threw the wrap on the ground and began to stomp on it. This didn’t work either. He picked it up and buried it behind some pillows. Now this appeared to work, at least enough for him to get away. He grabbed all the pillows he could find and piled them on and around where he had stashed the wrap. Then he picked up the camera, stuffed it down his pants and made a beeline for the doors. By this time the police had arrived and were waiting for him to exit.

Do all the pieces fit together?

I loved putting together puzzles when I was a kid. It started out with the small little three or four piece baby puzzles. After many years I evolved into some of the hardest puzzles I could find- the ones where all the pieces look the same and have very few distinguishing characteristics.

While it has been many years since I tried to put a puzzle together, I have moved on to different types of puzzles, the kind you find working in the retail security and loss prevention field.

When I work a case, I still take the same approach I did when I worked a puzzle, start out with the easy corners and the edges. Once I get the frame built, I can then start putting the little details together to form the whole picture. Sometimes it might be an employee theft case; sometimes it might be an organized ring stealing particular items.

In all of my experiences, I know that retail anti-theft devices have always been important pieces I have used to solve the puzzle laid out before me.

Cheap labels and Cheap tags that are Checkpoint Compatible?

It seems like everyone has his or her own version of products these days. Every name brand has a store brand counterpart. Well, up until recently, it seems like if you wanted an item, or system, you had to pick who you wanted to go with, there was no intermingling of products.

If you got an air freshener, for example, you could only buy that particular brand’s refills. Well it seems like people are starting to wizen up. Now I am seeing air fresheners marketing that their brand is compatible with other maker’s fresheners and refills.

Retail anti-theft devices are the same way. Not all anti-shoplifting tags can be used with other manufacturer’s products. This is not the case here. These EAS tags are compatible with the Checkpoint’s retail security systems. No more worrying about having to get a completely different system just to have access to cheap labels and cheap tags.

Selling yourself short is never a good idea.

One of the fundamentals of consumer choice is that one product can easily be substituted in for another one. There is always a choice of products to choose from at competing or comparable price points.

You know that your customers have a choice to come in and shop at your store, so why would you sell yourself short by giving them a reason to shop elsewhere. You want the right products in at the right time for the right price.

Why would you not want the same choices when it comes to your own purchases? When you decide to invest in retail security, why not make the best choices and get the most for your money?

Don’t sell yourself short and get inferior retail anti-theft devices because that’s all you think you can afford.

Get cheap labels and cheap tags that are worth something. Retail anti-shoplifting tools are diverse in quality and content. Use your power of choice and get the ones that are worth your time, money and effort. You wouldn’t sell your customers an inferior product, so don’t buy one yourself.

Theft can be scary…

With the holidays coming up, it may seem odd to start talking about creepy things like vampires but when it comes to retail security and protecting retailers form theft (which is VERY HIGH this time of year), there is actually a strange connection between the two.

Think about the common vampire character. They walk around looking and acting like they are no different than you or me. The closer you get, the more you discover that they are willing to swindle, defraud, con, or just plain take whatever they want without care or regard to anyone else.

I personally see no difference between that and your everyday, commonplace shoplifter.

Instead of using garlic and wooden stakes to fend off vampires, shoplifters require their own tools. Retail anti-theft devices like cheap labels and cheap tags work efficiently to send shoplifters back to the seedy undergrounds that they came from.

Just like any other Hollywood horror story, let the good guys win in the end. Use the right retail security devices in the right way to outsmart to evildoers in the world. A little dramatic, maybe, but the underlying principle stands true.

All or nothing, no exceptions!

One of the hardest things about implementing anti-shoplifting products from checkpoint systems like checkpoint labels, checkpoint security tags, etc. is getting your team to apply the product to every item, every time.

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve gone out to audit our retail theft prevention standards to find clothes not tagged or electronics not spider wrapped. I’ve tried posting signs on stockroom doors proclaiming “Stop” and demanding a quick check of the merchandise being replenished to ensure proper anti-shoplifting devices are applied. I’ve tried talking about it until I was blue in the face. I’ve tried just about everything and without saying the right words, it was just about impossible to get people to listen.

My message now is simple. All or nothing, and it sure isn’t going to be nothing. When we apply checkpoint security systems devices to some but not all merchandise available, we are basically implanting the idea to steal into the brains of someone who otherwise may not have came in with the idea to do so; the criminal of opportunity if you will. Say the customer is looking at the digital cameras. Most of them are spider wrapped, but there is one sitting there without. Now the customer has the thought that, there is this one sitting there completely unprotected. I can take this one and no one will know. By leaving even just a few items without checkpoint security tags you are opening yourself up to the possibility of loss.

This idea has been the most beneficial to getting my team to understand how important it is to apply checkpoint systems checkpoint security tags to every item, every time. The key to retail theft prevention is consistency, and checkpoint security systems make it easy to be consistent, with easy to use products.
