One, two, three

With so many great retail anti theft devices out there to prevent shoplifting, it can get kind of confusing understanding the nuances of each type of product.

I wanted to give a quick overview of the different stages of EAS alarms to include 2 Alarm, and 3 Alarm products.

At the most basic of levels, all EAS products (soft and hard tags) regardless of form are equipped with a level one alarm. It means that the alarm will go off at the front doors when the retail anti theft devices passes trough, if they are not deactivated or removed first.

 That seems simple enough.

Next comes the 2 Alarm. These are products that are a little more complex. The alarms are for higher ticket or higher theft items that need a little bit better of security. A 2 Alarm product will emit an audible alarm if the device is tampered with. So even if the EAS is not near a doorway, the alarm will sound if someone tries to remove the device.

A 3 Alarm EAS tag is the highest and most involved form of retail anti theft devices to prevent shoplifting. A 3 Alarm will do what both a one alarm, and a 2 Alarm product will do. The best part is that the 3 Alarm will continue to emit that penetrating audible alarm for a full ten minutes after the product has left the store.

I hope this helps clarify the differences for you.

10 Minutes is a long time

When you think of time, you understand that a second is over in a flash. A minute, takes a little longer, but depending on what is going on in that minute, it can feel like an eternity.

10 minutes is an eternity if you are waiting for an important phone call. 10 minutes is an eternity if you are standing in line waiting to check out at a store. 10 minutes is an eternity if you are a 3 Alarm retail anti theft device screaming at the shoplifter who stole you.

That’s right a 3 Alarm tag will sound for ten full minutes before it ceases its audible alarm. Hopefully the 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices will prevent shoplifting form the get go. If for some reason it does not deter the thief, there is essentially a three-step warning to convince them otherwise.

Step one is the perimeter warning. If the tags get too close to the entry doors without being detached, an alarm will sound.

The second step in the warning system is if the product is being tampered with. If a shoplifter tries to disarm or detach the 3 Alarm products without the proper detacher, it will generate an alarm.

Finally, if the shoplifter still tries to steal the product, the 3 Alarm tag will continue to emit a siren for a full ten minutes. That should be long enough for the shoplifter to come to their senses, drop the merchandise, and let you come retrieve it.

Hey, I found it!

I am always loosing my keys and my phone. I had even hired an assistant manager one time and explained to him on his first day at work was to make sure that I always had my phone and keys before leaving the office. He laughed, until five minutes later when I couldn’t find my phone.

My friends know I am a lost cause. They often joke about getting me one of those remotes that you can attach an alarm on to your personal effects. That way you can just let your lost items send off a distress signal to help you locate them.

I think that is why I like the 3 Alarm products for retail anti theft devices. The 3 Alarm will emit an audible alarm for ten minutes after a stolen product has passed through the store’s doorway.

It gives you time to find your item. If you have a shoplifter stealing an item, they will try to run out the doors. Once the 3 Alarm activates, and they realize it won’t stop; the shoplifter will realistically drop the item.

Even if they take the item with while they are running, ten minutes is ample time to find out where the item was discarded. You may not always be able to prevent shoplifting from happening, but you will always have a shot at recovering the merchandise with a 3 Alarm retail anti theft device.

Securing your removal keys is a no-brainer

Every type of security device is removed in one of two methods: the legitimate way using a corresponding removal key, and the illegitimate way which usually involves a pair of pliers or bolt-cutters.  Savvy shoplifters know how to identify the legitimate tools and always look for opportunities to get their hands on them.  Every so often they succeed thanks to the laziness, forgetfulness, or plain carelessness of an employee.

I’ve seen some companies secure the tools right to the cash wrap and others require their employees to carry them on their person or stash them in a register.  For stores using Spider Wraps, 2 Alarm, or 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices only the last two methods are plausible as it would prove impossible to remove a Spider Wrap with a tool that was welded to a counter.  In my experience, the best way to ensure the convenient removal of your Spider Wraps is to make it impossible for your tools to wander.  Obviously there is no sure-fire practice as every store operates differently, but I am basing my suggestion on a fairly ‘textbook’ store setup.

In most stores there is usually a space (or cubby-hole if you prefer) somewhere directly beneath or nearby the register.  Installing a small storage space, similar to a hide-a-key on the underside of the space provides you with a discreet area to protect your removal tools from prying eyes while also keeping them in an area your employees will remember since it will be so unique.

Keep in mind though that regardless of how you secure you try to prevent shoplifting by protecting your retail anti theft device removal tools if a shoplifter really wants to get their hands on one, they will find a way.

Retail Anti-Theft Devices: Technology For A Real Problem

Shoplifting or theft is as old as the marketplace.  For many years retailers worked with limited technology to address the issue, but today is a new day.  The loss prevention industry has long sought for new technology to provide an edge against shoplifting.  Recently, the focus has been on retail anti-theft devices as a means to prevent shoplifting.  Currently, there are many retail anti-theft devices on the markets, some examples are:  2 Alarm, 3 Alarm, Jewel Lok, Nano Gate, Shark Tag, and Spider Wrap.

Each of these tools has their place in the retail environment.  The 2 Alarm and the 3 Alarm security tags is a flexible article security tag.  It can be used for many different applications such as:  Clothing security, merchandise security and most of all to prevent shoplifting.  The 2 Alarm and 3 Alarm tags use RF or EAS technology to notify the store’s personnel in the event that merchandise is taken from the store.  These tags work best with merchandise that can be pinned.  The Jewel Lok is a small security tag.  The Jewel Lok is designed to work to secure your high priced jewelry.  The Jewel Lok works on the same principal as the 2 Alarm and 3 Alarm, but in a smaller package.  These devices are designed to prevent shoplifting

The shark tag and Spider Wrap are newer products to hit the marketplace.  The Shark tag is used to prevent loses that can occur from return fraud.  The Shark Tag is a non EAS/RF retail anti theft device.  It is attached to merchandise and easily removed by cutting.  This allows the retailer to see if the merchandise has been worn.  While not designed to prevent shoplifting, the retailer can then deny the return of unsellable merchandise.  Spider Wrap is used for securing merchandise packaged within boxes.  The Spider Wrap retail anti-theft device is a great tool for “tagging” these difficult to control items.

All of the above mentioned retail anti-theft devices could be partnered with the Nano Gate.  The Nano Gate is a device that is placed on the exit/entrance of an area that needs to be secure and not have your product in the area.  I’ve worked in the loss prevention industry for a number of years and it’s my belief that it is important to invest in retail anti theft devices for the health of any business.

Nano Gates are no use without tags!

The other day I was in a store in a different part of the district that had not reported any tagging audits in over four months.  It just so happened that at that same point in history that store’s Loss Prevention department had been dissolved due to budget cuts, leaving all Loss Prevention duties in the hands of the store manager and his assistant managers.  Unfortunately they weren’t all that knowledgeable, or bright, when it came to enforcing and adhering to LP practices.

I was there with a team of other LP associates to perform a sweep of the property and find everything that was being done incorrectly so that it could be corrected and to simultaneously instruct store management as to how to perform their required duties.  While there were a few major issues, such as no employee bag checks or failure to review CCTV footage, the biggest issue was found in the realm of what I was assigned to look for.

There wasn’t a single retail anti theft device in place, anywhere.  Not a one 2 Alarm or 3 Alarm tag was in place.  Not even a Spider Wrap haphazardly attached to a bulk item.

We were stunned.

This was a store that had a fully functional Nano Gate system at all of the entrances, but that was of course useless without any retail anti theft devices to set it off.  When asked how they expected the Nano Gates to function, the store manager thought that all products arrived in store with security devices hidden inside them.

At this point you may apply palm to face in frustration.

As for the store supply of retail anti theft devices; we found ALL OF THEM tucked away in a stock room in boxes that clearly indicated what they were.

The Benefits of 3 Alarm Technology to Prevent Shoplifting and Liability

There is a large amount of shoplifting in retail stores today.  In fact, shoplifting is a multi-billion dollar a year industry.  It affects not only your store’s profits, but the economy as a whole.  In addition, there is a lot of liability in making shoplifting apprehensions.  Not only can injury be a result, but so can slander, unlawful imprisonment, etc. as well.  Many companies have gone away from making apprehensions altogether as the liability is just too high.  This is not a real solution as it then makes them a target for increased activity and possible Organized Retail Crime.  So how do you prevent shoplifting and keep liability in check?

The answer is by using 3 Alarm technology from Alpha Security.  Retail anti theft devices are a staple in the Loss Prevention industry because they work.  Items like EAS tags pose a danger to shoplifters as it draws attention to them which can lead to their arrest.  This is an important tool in the fight to prevent shoplifting.  To take this one step further Alpha Security created 3 Alarm technology.  These retail anti theft devices have an alarm built in.  So not only does the door alarm sound, but if tampered with or stolen the item alarms itself.

This “alarm” part of the 3 Alarm technology is where the reduced liability comes into play.  Many times the EAS alarm sounds and we don’t know why.  It is tricky to engage the person who set off the alarm without making accusations that will come back to bite us.  It is much easier and safer to question the alarm sounding from their pants.  While a customer can blame a new wallet or their cell phone for setting off the door alarm, there really is no way to explain the alarm from within their personal possession.  This gives store associates a much less liable way to ask for their product back.

Nano Gate … A great new way to prevent shoplifting!!!

There are many retail anti theft devices on the market today that are aimed at helping retailers prevent shoplifting.  Many of these retail anti theft devices and systems have been around for years and some are much newer.  A relatively new system that I have found to be very useful is the Nano Gate (and 3 Alarm tags) by Alpha Security.

By this time I think we are all pretty familiar with standard EAS systems.  You put sensor tags on merchandise and if it passes the door pedestals then an alarm sounds.  We all hope we can prevent shoplifting by bringing attention to those who are setting off the system.  Two problems have developed with this system.  One, in many stores no one pays attention to this alarm anymore and it sounds all day with no response from employees or customers.  When that happens the deterrent effect is lost.  A second issue is that even if you do respond as an employee, you are limited in what you can search and what you can do to recover your product.

The Nano Gate and Alpha’s 3 Alarm tags address these problems.  The first piece of the solution is the 3 Alarm tags.  These retail anti theft devices are like standard hard sensor tags with the exception that they have an alarm built into the tag.  If a would-be shoplifter tampers with the tag then the alarm will sound on the tag itself.  This is great at deterring seasoned shoplifters who can quickly defeat standard EAS tags.  The second part of the system is the Nano Gate.  Unlike standard pedestals that just alarm, when the 3 Alarm tag passes by the Nano Gate the built in senor alarm sounds.  When an employee responds it will be hard for a shoplifter to explain the alarm coming from their bag (or other places) as anything but theft.

Spider Wrapping to stall shoplifters

It’s odd looking, a little cumbersome, and makes funny loud noises if mishandled.  I speak, of course, of Spider Wraps.  They are retail anti theft devices specifically designed to prevent shoplifting of larger, bulk items.  In my store Spider Wraps can be found protecting things such things as televisions, power tools, and vacuum cleaners.  It takes a bit of effort ensuring the floor staff properly applies them where they are required but it is simply part of the job facilitating such loss prevention policy.  What good are retail anti theft devices if they aren’t being used in a great enough quantity?

A Nano Gate is also needed at the entry point of your store to provide your Spider Wraps with a secondary alarm system.  While the units do possess self-contained alarms which sound when they are tampered with (like when someone cuts one of the cords without disabling the alarm) they won’t do anything if someone walks out of the store with a Spider Wrapped product but no Nano Gate to trigger the secondary alarm.  Of course, those in the know have their methods of disabling or removing the units, but such methods are messy and time consuming, not to mention time consuming.  That is how they prevent shoplifting usually.  Most thieves will bypass a bulky product that is Spider Wrapped because they know how noticeable such an action would be.  While other retail anti theft devices are a little less conspicuous (like the 2 Alarm or 3 Alarm systems or Shark Tags and Jewel Locks) they are mostly meant for different applications.  That doesn’t mean they don’t have their uses or aren’t as effective, but they wouldn’t make quite the same impact for protecting large items.
