Are we talking about Chili – Alpha 3 Alarm

I would like to feel that I am pretty savvy when it comes to technology. There isn’t much that I can’t do or figure out. I am baffled when it comes to what exactly are the Alpha Security Alpha 2 Alarm and Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices.

I know this isn’t like a 3-alarm fire or a good bowl of 3-alarm chili. It did take me a bit to realize that Alpha Security has come up with different levels of protection against in store theft.

Nano Gate to the Rescue

Anyone who has spent time apprehending shoplifters has either made a bad stop or come really close. When I say “bad stop”, I’m referring to an apprehension where the suspect did not actually have the product on their person. The most common scenario is that the LP Agent saw the customer conceal the product, but somewhere along the way the suspect de-concealed the product and the LP Agent missed it. Some days are like that when you are trying to prevent shoplifting.

Potential lawsuits can be filed for false imprisonment, defamation of character, emotional distress, etc. in situations such as this and can become extremely costly to companies. Many retailers have stopped making apprehensions all together to avoid the risk of liability. A different solution is needed to protect your merchandise and increase profits by reducing losses.

Stores definitely need LP Agents making apprehensions. This is a strong visual deterrent which helps prevent shoplifting because it sends an unequivocal message that your store is not an easy target for shoplifters. I also suggest adding retail anti-theft devices to the mix to help your LP Agents make safe and responsible apprehensions. Retail anti-theft devices will by themselves help prevent shoplifting. What Level Is For You? – Alpha 3 Alarm

I know that there are different EAS tags and devices out there, but when I first started researching products, I didn’t know what exactly is the difference between the Alpha Security Alpha 2 Alarm and the Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices.

It didn’t take me long to realize that Alpha Security had created different levels of protection against in store theft.

So the screech of the alarm will not stop at the doors. It wills stay with the EAS device – and more importantly the product. This makes the shoplifter even more conspicuous than what they want to be.

Time is On My Side, Sometimes – Alpha 3 Alarm

When you are trying to prevent shoplifting, it is equal parts effective customer service, and consistent use of retail anti theft devices.

It doesn’t matter if you have the most attentive employees who are spot on at providing the best possible service imaginable. At some point, your associates have to stop engaging a shoplifter and attend to other tasks.

I know. I have spent countless hours watching shoplifters. One time I spent thirty minutes watching and “cleaning” the fitting room, because there was a girl inside, who was going to steal a shirt, and kept checking to see if I left.

Eventually, I had to go attend to another managerial issue that could not wait. Sure enough, the girl took the shirt.

Not only did I lose the shirt, but I also lost the thirty minutes of productivity (and a bit of my ego) in the process.

Going over the top with Retail Anti-Theft Devices

The other day I was walking through a retail sporting goods store when I came across a display of football jerseys. I had to stop and consider the display, not because I liked the team, or the colors, or even the price offered, but because of how ridiculous the jerseys looked while being festooned with four retail anti-theft devices EACH!

Each piece of clothing had an Alpha 3 Alarm, an Alpha 2 Alarm, an Alpha Fashion2 hard tag, and an Alpha Shark Tag attached at various points of the garment. Just by looking at them I could tell it would be nearly impossible for any customer to try on any of the jerseys without being bludgeoned into a coma by the amount of devices.

I believe that if you have that many retail anti-theft devices on a piece of clothing you might have a few issues in your company. First of all, you need to look at moving your store out of that neighborhood if the need to prevent shoplifting is THAT severe. Secondly, your Loss Prevention or merchandising team has no idea how to properly attach devices to product. Or, finally, you just have too many excess devices and no reasonable idea what to do with them.

Here’s some advice; research each anti-theft device BEFORE ordering it. That way you will know what can fit your company needs so your customers can try on the clothing and find out what fits them.

Are your Keys Safe?

Every type of security device is removed in one of two methods: the legitimate way using a corresponding removal key, and the illegitimate way which usually involves a pair of pliers or bolt-cutters. Savvy shoplifters know how to identify the legitimate tools and always look for opportunities to get their hands on them.

I’ve seen some companies secure the tools right to the cash wrap and others require their employees to carry them on their person or stash them in a register. For stores using Spider Wraps, 3 Alarm, or 2 Alarm retail anti theft devices only the last two methods are plausible as it would prove impossible to remove a Spider Wrap with a tool that was welded to a counter. In my experience, the best way to ensure the convenient removal of your Spider Wraps is to make it impossible for your tools to wander. Obviously there is no sure-fire practice as every store operates differently, but I am basing my suggestion on a fairly ‘textbook’ store setup.

In most stores there is usually a space (or cubby-hole if you prefer) somewhere directly beneath or nearby the register. Installing a small storage space, similar to a hide-a-key on the underside of the space provides you with a discreet area to protect your removal tools from sticky fingers while also keeping them in an area your employees will remember since it will be so unique.

Nano Gates are no good without the right tags!

The other day I was in a store in a different part of the district that had not reported any tagging audits in over four months. It just so happened that at that same point in history that store’s Loss Prevention department had been dissolved due to budget cuts, leaving all Loss Prevention duties in the hands of the store manager and his assistant managers. Unfortunately they weren’t all that knowledgeable, or properly trained when it came to enforcing and adhering to LP practices.

I was there with a team of other LP associates to perform a sweep of the property and find everything that was being done incorrectly so that it could be corrected and to simultaneously instruct store management as to how to perform their required duties. While there were a few major issues, such as no employee bag checks or failure to review CCTV footage, the biggest issue was found in the realm of what I was assigned to look for.

There wasn’t a single retail anti-theft device in place, anywhere. Not a one 2 Alarm or 3 Alarm tag was being used. Not even a Spider Wrap haphazardly attached to a bulk item.

We were stunned.

What a great way to define Alpha Security’s line of 3 Alarm products. Show off your merchandise. Secure them with retail anti theft devices designed to deter and prevent shoplifting. Sell your customers your products in a comprehensive and user-friendly format.
