Seem Like Nice People, But… – Bottle Locks

One of the biggest comments that I have heard form customers about continuing to buy wine from the smaller liquor store (instead of in a grocery store) is the personalized attention they can get. Small box stores have an opportunity to win their customers over with their knowledge and their selection. They can focus on specific bottles that might not be carried by a big box. They also can provide more in depth product knowledge than your average grocery store employee can. All of that, of course, is contingent on using the bottle locks to ensure when a customer comes in for a specific bottle, you still have it in stock.

If the customers are making dedicated trips to your liquor store to buy a particular item and then the item is unavailable, the customer is less likely to return. They will take their business to the big box store.

While having stellar product knowledge and helpful employees is an attractive benefit to shopping small specialty stores, it doesn’t excuse a lack of inventory. Ultimately, the customer needs to have the right product they are looking for.

I can’t tell you how many times I have gone somewhere and seen this type of situation. I always leave thinking they are nice people who have a genuine interest in helping me, but they are always out of stock. It’s only a matter of time before I, as a customer, quit coming back.
