I had a friend who was a manager for a national retailer. We used to share stories and exchange thoughts on how to approach certain situations in the workplace. Retail theft prevention was always a hot topic for us.
He firmly believed in managing to the small things. If you could manage the little things that went on, the big things would take care of themselves. I always had a hard time believing him. I spent most of my time running around putting out fires- taking care of the big things, as it were.
Well, since I was recently assigned to struggling store that wasn’t making much progress, I decided to give his philosophy a shot. I started to look not at the big issues, but how to stop shoplifting before the shoplifters got carried away.
I focused my retail theft prevention around the little products, the small pieces of merchandise that are easy to conceal. Instead of watching the big items, I focused on reducing the shoplifters who were testing the waters by stealing items that easily went unnoticed. I made sure my checkpoint systems sent a clear message that the small items were alarmed and tagged.
It took about three months, but I noticed a difference in the reduction of large and noticeable theft in the store.
