Many stores offer a department dedicated to cookware. Some of the items are small and easy to conceal; knives, kitchen utensils, etc. But other larger items, like blenders, specialty coffee machines and cookware sets, are harder to hide on your person. Unfortunately, some stores do not offer bags large enough to place these sizable items in. Allowing customers to walk out with these high-priced items without a bag only opens the door for shoplifters to do the same.
Working as an LP agent, I once experienced a reoccurring shoplifter who would come into my store, select a high-priced cookware set, and walk out to his car. This happened every few weeks for several months. Eventually, we caught him red handed at the exit with an unpaid for set. When we asked him why he chose to steal this particular item over and over, he told us it was easy for him. Walking out of the store, unquestioned, with one high-valued item that could be returned later for store credit was easier than concealing multiple items.
An easy way to deter shoplifters is by attaching Anti-theft Devices to these larger items. Cheap Tags and Cheap Labels are an inexpensive fix to this problem. Also, having an associate or Retail Security personnel ensure these un-bagged items are paid for by checking receipts at the door can help prevent retail theft from happening in your store.
