Implications Beyond Your Store –Wardrobing

Wardrobing is not just about the customers who are in your store. It is also about customers who do any kind of online or mail order shopping. I never thought about those ramifications until I was presented with an unfortunate situation as a customer.

I recently bought a dress. Since I made the purchase online I never worried that the dress may have been involved in any wardrobing before I bought it. I didn’t realize that some companies send merchandise straight from a store, instead of out of a warehouse.

Once I received the dress in the mail, I went to try it on and there was a huge smudge of makeup all inside the dress. Ugh. After calling customer service, I was given two options, return the dress or keep the dress with an extra ten percent discount. Since I really wanted the dress and the discount would cover dry cleaning, I went with option number two.

One of two things had happened. The make up came from a customer trying the dress on, oblivious to the damage she did, or it came from a customer who was wardrobing.

Either way, the company lost out. They were shorted the discount that they gave me. Additionally, they lost me as a customer (and all the money I am spending elsewhere) because it was not worth the potential hassle to order anything from them again.
