RF Security Tags as Evidence

Fragrances have been and always will be one of our most targeted items for theft in our stores. It is a small and easily concealable item. The merchandise is desirable for those looking to treat themselves, but also has a high dollar street value for criminals trying to make some easy money. Online resale shops are flooded with the product and if you take a stroll through a local flea market or resale shop you will probably find some there as well. Some businesses have resorted to locking up every fragrance they have, but the biggest problem with that is the missed sales when an attendant isn’t readily available to access the product for the customer. RF security labels have been in use on fragrances and other products for many years. It is a sleek and small RF label that doesn’t harm the product or its packaging.

The problem comes when the product is removed from its packaging. While some shoplifters are just after the product inside for their own use, the major shortage contributors are the shoplifters that want to sell the product. If they are going to sell it, they are going to need the packaging in order for the fragrance to be worth anything. Therefore the main thing that they are going to remove is the cellophane and the RF security label that is attached. When looking for evidence of theft in your building, be aware that all you might find is a little cellophane and some RF labels. When you identify an issue, you can increase your focus on that area to stop shoplifting.

Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, I worked for a high-end retailer. It was a very different atmosphere as the entire staff was basically scared to death of their clientele. They were so afraid that they would offend a client and the client would never shop with them again. To a certain extent, I understood. A large majority of the sales associates were commission based and a loss of client could mean a serious cut in their paycheck each month.

What I struggled with was convincing the employees, and sometimes the management, that clothing security was a necessity that if done correctly would not impede their mission of world-class service.

We half-heartedly put security tags on clothes. Fitting room doors were routinely left unlocked because it was easier than having tan associate be available to unlock them. It really was no surprise that we routinely found price tags stuffed into corners of the fitting rooms.

I talked till I was blue in the face about the importance of clothing security. I would walk the store locking doors and putting security tags on clothes.

It wasn’t until one night when a gang of about five guys walked into the store grabbed every designer purse they could carry and ran out the door. They all came crying to me as if I had a magical way to bring all of their product back. I unfortunately had to tell them that they would be without those sales to their customers.

Because they didn’t listen to my initial advice, they had to turn away customers because they were out of merchandise. It was a hard lesson for everyone to learn.

The positive side was that I now had the full attention of the store, and together we created one of the best clothing security programs the store had ever seen.

How It All Adds Up

The term Background Checks is really a multi dimensional set of sometimes-complex data that only truly competent and reliable background check experts can disseminate. A seemingly generic background check is usually made up of smaller more specific parts including a criminal background check, an employee background check, and other parts of pre employment screening.

A criminal background check will look for any felony or misdemeanor convictions. While most companies a really looking for felony convictions, if someone has a vast string of misdemeanors, it’s good to watch out for the pattern of wrongdoing. This type of check can include any traffic violations. Even if your potential employee is not required to drive for the job, it might give insight into how they operate outside of work.

Employee background checks can be specifically geared toward previous work history. Did the applicant really work for the company for the last five years, or did they only work four and a half and are trying to cover up an employment gap? Did they really hold the last position stated on their resume, or was that an embellishment?

The final piece is other pre employment screening. Can you run a name and address check? Have they changed their name? You may want to run a previous name to see if there are any negative items that come back. What about previous addresses? If they have moved frequently is there a reason?

While one or two things on their own may not seem so bad, the more information you can gather, the better picture you can create of who is really applying for your job.

Old fashioned methods that still work

I have heard a lot of stories involving internal theft.  Some of them are immensely far-fetched while others are so crazy they have to be true.  This story is part of the latter bunch.

A colleague of mine was having an issue with video games going missing in his store.  He had a camera in the area where they were kept but it was a still and had no way of being repositioned to a better locale so he tried everything from maintaining a physical LP presence there to rigging up dummy cameras to possibly scare of his mysterious thief.  His big break in the case came one night while doing a check of the stock rooms.  He found plastic wrappers and security cases for some video games stashed beneath a shelf in a store-room used for house wares.  With the new knowledge that it was a case of internal theft he now had to think of who it was and how he could catch the in the act.

Unfortunately the store-room provided no place to put a covert camera, nor did he have any solid leads as to who the culprit was.  Eventually he came up with an idea to apprehend the suspect that was so insane that he didn’t tell anyone else what method he was using.

Using a large cardboard box, one normally containing a do-it-yourself cabinet, he cut out a few discreet holes so he could sit in it and see outside it into the room around him.  He sat in the box for six shifts straight until his internal theft case came to a close when the suspect, a guy on his receiving team, showed up in the stock room, games in hand, and started opening them.  My colleague was so excited he leapt out of the box scaring the thief half to death in the process.

It may not have been the most practical employee theft investigation, but it worked.

Criminal of Opportunity

Using anti-shoplifting devices such as EAS hard tags and soft tags has really done a great deal to cut down on shoplifting from the opportunist or armature shoplifter in my building. The typical person that is shoplifting is someone that shops at the store regularly, loves the merchandise, but just can’t afford to buy it all the time. These people steal because it is easy and accessible. When you take those things away by implementing anti-theft devices, you eliminate the probability of armature theft taking place. When you remove the opportunity, you reduce the theft.

Even when you do have an ambitious shoplifter, they tend to be easier to identify when you have anti-theft devices in place. Working in retail security for as long as I have, you’ve seen it all. Recently I had a shoplifter that selected a few shirts that were protected with some hard tags. I didn’t pick up on the person until they were in the corner of our shoe department using the edge of the shelf to try and pry the hard tag off of the items. They were able to wrestle a few of them off the merchandise, but it took them quite some time and a lot of determination. I had several sales floor employees contacting me and letting me know what was going on as it was so obvious. By the time they had removed the tags and concealed the merchandise I was able to contact the police and have them ready to apprehend before they even left the building.

Employee Theft Investigation Strategies: End of Shift Observation

Another tactic commonly used to spur employee theft investigations is to complete end of shift observations. While sporadic observation of an employee throughout their shift is recommended, it is not until the final minutes before the employee’s break, lunch or shift end that they will typically conduct employee theft activity and conceal the merchandise that they are after.

I was observing an employee during the middle of her shift when a typical lunch break would occur. The employee walked to the break room and punched out. She then took her jacket and purse and headed out of the store. On her way out she stopped in a department and bent down several times, which appeared to be very suspicious of internal theft. The employee then walked out of the building and to her car. I observed her emptying several items into her car before returning to the store, and once I checked the car I could see through the windows that there were several items in the vehicle that appeared to be from our store. After that I decided to observe the subject for the rest of the day. She didn’t conduct any other employee theft during the bulk of her shift, however she did occasionally place merchandise in a fairly secluded area of the store that did not belong there. When it was time for her to go, just as she had before, the employee punched out and grabbed her things. As she was walking through the store the employee stepped into the department where she had previously placed merchandise and bent down several times. After she left the building I found that the merchandise she had staged was missing. On her next shift we interviewed the employee. She admitted to the internal theft and we got a full confession including much more merchandise than what we had observed being taken.

Ready for Spring

I was looking out my back door yesterday and I saw the first robin of the season. I couldn’t believe it. The winter months have just flown by and now we are already seeing the signs of spring.

After the robin, I noticed the trees are budding out and the grass is starting to return to its normal shade of green. Inside the stores, you can see a shift. Bright spring colors are on display, a long with bright spring merchandise. New shoes, new clothes and definitely new bags and purses.

In the winter we see a lot of tiny little bags and clutches. The spring brings out huge beach bags and carry alls. On more than one occasion I have apprehended a suspect that has stuffed one of these huge bags full of merchandise. In an effort to stop shoplifting using our merchandise as a tool, we started to use Checkpoint security tags.

We are now attaching Checkpoint security tags to all of our purses and handbags. We are putting the pins right into the eye of the zipper pull. So far it seems to be working. Without a means to stuff the product, we are eliminating one more way to attempt shoplifting. It also provides a visual cue that more merchandise in the store is tagged and we are watching our shrink.

Retail security simplified…

I am often amazed at how complex we as business leaders tend to make things.  In an effort to always do more and do it better we sometimes just overcomplicate proven processes.  Take retail security for example.  I am amazed at how many different providers there are of anti-shoplifting tools.  Last I checked all EAS tags were created equal.

Think about it.  It is the same technology.  Whether you get name brand EAS tags or you get cheap tags you still will be preventing loss by protecting your product.  Anti-theft devices are unnerving for most shoplifters.  Most major studies show that the overwhelming offender is an amateur.  This type of shoplifter only knows one thing; anti-theft devices help you get you caught.  If they don’t care whose name is on the tag then why do we?  Why pay for a name brand tag when cheap labels and tags still deter theft.  When you consider switching to less expensive equipment you will still deter theft and save on expenses.  I think that’s called a win-win situation.

A helpful tip…

We all know retail security is a tough game.  There are so many different facets to performing the job that it can seem daunting at times.  What makes it worse is that even after you have taken every possible anti-shoplifting precaution or have access to, and use, every anti-theft device on the planet, somehow there is someone out there who will still steal from you.  It doesn’t matter HOW they do it or even WHY they do it, they just do it and that’s all we need to concern ourselves with.  That is why when we get beat (and don’t say you haven’t because we know that’s a lie) we need to learn what our weakness was and adapt to compensate for it.

An example would be a recent endeavor to stop a series of snatch and grab thefts occurring in our high-end children’s clothing area, which is unfortunately positioned within twenty feet of a main exit.  It took two hits to that area before we realized what was happening and required installing and affixing more anti-theft devices.  When that didn’t work we installed a brand new camera to catch him in the act.  That failed too.  He was too quick and there wasn’t enough time to spot him and apprehend him.

The solution:

Move his target section to the far end of the second floor.

When it comes to retail security you just need to think outside the box to succeed.

Alpha’s Cable Lok Will Secure Your Handbags

While employed at a department store, we began experiencing an increase in grab and run incidents involving handbags. One or more shoplifters would enter the store, pile purses on their arms, and quickly flee the store and enter an awaiting vehicle. For Loss Prevention, our ability to prevent shoplifting of this merchandise proved arduous; unless we were fortunate enough to be watching the door or happened to initiate observation of the subject before selection, an honest stop wasn’t feasible.

My company had eliminated using cable lock boxes and tethering merchandise to racks a few years earlier because they inhibited customers’ ability to try on and examine the merchandise and thus reduced sales. Additionally, they certainly didn’t make for an attractive display of designer handbags. Since eliminating those tools, they hadn’t found a replacement retail anti-theft device to protect purses and smaller leather goods.

With the augmentation of grab and run incidents, my employer turned to Checkpoint System’s Alpha division to find a solution to prevent shoplifting in our Handbags department and they recommended the Cable Lok, available in either a 2-Alarm or 3-Alarm format. Both solutions sound when tampered with and activate an EAS signal, but the 2-Alarm lacks the feature of self-alarming if removed from the store.

The retail anti-theft device that my company chose for this type of merchandise was the 3-Alarm Cable Lok, which we could easily secure around the handle of the purse and it wouldn’t get in the way when honest customers wanted to see what it looked like over their shoulder. Not only did they eliminate our grab and run incidents, we received excellent feedback from our customers. Whether the 2-Alarm or 3-Alarm suits your needs, the Alpha Cable Lok will help you reduce loss in your store too!
