Retail Security: Profit’s Best Friend

Retail security involves many different working parts with regards to anti-shoplifting, some of which are different kinds of anti-theft devices used to deter theft. Anti-theft devices can, and should be used where necessary. Also they are very inexpensive and you will see your gain in the long run. Cheap tags can be placed on almost anything. There are so many different types of cheap tags made specifically for different types of merchandise. You can have tags that pin to clothing (without damaging them of course) and tags that stick onto boxes.

Cheap labels work well to compliment anti-theft devices by providing further visual warning to potential shoplifters. Let’s say a security tag is placed on a piece of clothing but it was placed incorrectly, or the clothing was folded in a way where the tag was not visible. Having a label present will let the shoplifter know that that particular item is protected.

Retail security is essential in maximizing profits. Cheap tags and cheap labels are out there for you to use to scare off and deter those who want to steal from you. By having an anti-shoplifting mindset coupled with great customer service, your store will be a money maker, not a money breaker.

Not all internal theft is merchandise…

When it comes to employee theft there is nothing more irritating, more troublesome, than the theft of supplies.  Many employees do it; some deliberately, some accidentally, but it is so commonplace it is almost universally accepted as a simple fact of life regardless of the business.  The problem with it being so ‘accepted’ is that it is almost always disregarded and usually goes completely unpunished.  It is that kind of mentality that forces companies to waste millions of dollars on supplies.

Not only is there the waste factor, but there is the inherent frustration aspect of your business being short, or completely out of, a supply when it really needs it.  I can recall numerous instances where pens, paper towels, cleaning supplies, and even toilet paper has suddenly gone missing only to be discovered later that another employee had pilfered an obscene amount for their personal use.

A recent incident involved our warehouse becoming short on the store supplies of paper towels and water jugs for the water coolers.  At first it was just once in a while, but eventually entire stockpiles were going missing within days of shipments coming in.  After a lengthy stake-out and employee theft investigation we found that a ten-year veteran of the company had been moving large amounts of supplies to his vehicle over the course of his shifts at the beginning of each week and stockpiling them at his personal residence.  When it was acknowledged as a case of employee theft and he was brought in for an interview he denied any wrongdoing even when confronted with hard video evidence.  Eventually he admitted that he had been stealing supplies for years but claimed that he shouldn’t be punished since ‘everyone did it’.

Don’t allow your employees to think ANY kind of internal theft is okay.  Send them a message that stealing is wrong even if everyone does it.

Don’t Be Fooled By a Knock- Off

If you have ever tried or switched from a name brand item to a generic or store brand item, you know that not all products are equivalent to each other. Some things turn out ok. There is not a glaring difference between the two. Sometimes, though, the difference between a name brand and a cheap knock off is alarming.

When you are trying to stop shoplifting from occurring in your stores, you need to be wary of what off brands you use. You are libel to end up with an inferior foreign made item that does not stand up to the extreme quality controls of a Checkpoint label or a Checkpoint security tag.

Not all RF labels and RF security tags are equal. Checkpoint has developed and adheres to strict quality controls; testing each and every RF security tag and RF label they make.

Checkpoint believes in their quality and stands behind their name. They want you to believe in them too. This is one time where it is worth it to go with a trusted name brand. Your merchandise and your inventories are depending on it. Don’t be fooled by a knock off. Go with Checkpoint.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint labels, Checkpoint security tags, and other RF labels that can help you stop shoplifting with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system in your business.

It’s Never Too Late to Think About The Prom

There is a high school around the corner from my house that is proudly displaying their upcoming prom on the billboard. As I walk through the produce section of my local grocery store, there are boxed corsages of orchids and lilies just waiting to be scooped up by an anxious young high schooler who forgot to order one in advance. The department stores have their ball gowns front and center to catch a girl’s eye as she passes through. Ahh, Prom Time.

It’s the time of year when young love is at it’s finest. It’s also a big time for overextended high school students to start wardrobing. Prom dresses and accessories are not in danger of being stolen. This isn’t a time to be concerned with how to prevent shoplifting. Retail anti theft devices like hard and soft tags won’t be effective against wardrobing. What is effective is a Shark Tag.

A Shark Tag is a plastic clamp that is placed in a conspicuous spot on a garment. The shark tags are designed to be easily removed after purchase with a pair of scissors. It is a store’s big win to prevent returns on single use outfits like prom dresses. A cashier needs only to explain that the item cannot be returned if the shark tag has been removed.

By eliminating these refunders, you will increase your profits by eliminating needless returns of worn merchandise. You will also have the proper in stock for the true sale.

Good thing I checked inside my jeans

I was looking through the pockets of a pair of jeans the other day as I was trying to get some laundry done. I am forever leaving random receipts or chap stick in my pants, so I make a habit of always checking before any thing goes into the washer.

Sure enough, I felt something as I was searching the pockets. Strange, I thought. I can’t get anything out. As I took another look, I realized whatever I found was actually on the inside of my jeans, not in the pocket.

As it turns out, there was a little pouch inside my jeans that was holding a clothing security tag. Now, since I haven’t set any clothing alarms off at any store I have been in while wearing the jeans, I can safely assume that the tag was properly deactivated at the register when I bought them.

I can also assume that the tag in question was more than likely a Checkpoint tag. Some of the cheap import knock off labels have a habit of reactivating themselves if they are not properly cut out and discarded, like my little pouch instructed me to do.

A true Checkpoint tag is designed to not reactivate, as the tags can potentially cause customer service issues if it does reactivate.

Sometimes you have to get close to your employees

While performing pre employment screenings and backgrounds checks are essential to weeding out undesirables from the truly sought-after talent it isn’t the most sure-fire method to spotting troublemakers before you hire them.  Sometimes, in spite of all your precautions and preparations someone comes along and fools your rigorous application process and gains access to your company’s assets.  That is why on top of going through with the battery of background checks and pre employment screenings you have to keep a closer eye on your team.

As an example, my store hired someone to fill a low-level supervisor position just before Thanksgiving.  This girl had all the right references, a solid work history, and passed the company’s employee background check without a hitch.  For quite some time she was the perfect example of a young, hard-working, punctual individual.  She was well liked by the cashier staff and admired by her superiors.  But there were signs that something was off about her two months ago.

It was common knowledge among the staff that she was the primary supporter of her family; her mother, her newborn siblings, and her grandmother.  She never really complained about her lot but it was understandably a hard position to be put in for someone of such a young age.  It didn’t raise suspicion about her, per say, but rather created more admiration and sympathy for her.

Then about two weeks ago she was caught buying dozens of items ranging from clothing to house wares that she had marked down to practically nothing using another associate’s login information.  It was a terminable offence, and one that could have been spotted much earlier had we taken the time to dig deeper and find out her mother’s disability payments had been reduced causing a greater financial burden on her.

Preventing retail theft in a ‘big box store’

If you have never worked Loss Prevention in a ‘big box store’ you may find yourself wondering why exactly they would need such things like anti-theft devices in the first place.  Most stores that are of the ‘big box’ model require memberships to shop there and the vast majority of their products are massive in size or quantity making the possibility of theft difficult.  In a way such store models seem to prevent retail theft just by design.

The truth of the matter is that just because you may need a membership to shop somewhere doesn’t mean you need a membership to steal from the same place.  ‘Big box’ stores need to think about anti-shoplifting measures just as much as any department or specialty store does.  In fact, because of their business model it actually means there are a great deal more items in their inventories that require suites of anti-theft devices to protect them as such places are often the targets of ORC groups or ‘grab and dash’ criminals.  Don’t ever think there is some perfect business model that absolutely protects your store from theft without the need for anti-shoplifting measures.  You can never be too sure who might come walking through your store entrance and running out with an unsecured television.

Retail security with limited resources

I have been brought into a new store recently as a loss prevention supervisor and have found my resources extremely lacking and my workload practically back breaking.  The store has little in the way of available anti theft devices, no retail security cameras to truly speak of, and the staff is made up of people who are either internal theft suspects or completely clueless in the ways of shrink reduction practices.

I know that I am not the first loss prevention professional to encounter such a daunting situation upon being assigned a store.  In fact it is not the first time that I, myself, have been put in such a situation.  However there are those among our ranks, usually the newer members of the profession, who might balk or retreat when faced with such obstacles.  For those in the latter camp I have two pieces of advice that might make things easier to tackle.

The first is common sense.  No matter how bad things in your store might be, don’t try to tackle every problem at once.  Take your issues one at a time in a priority of worst-case to easy-peasy and you’ll save yourself a ton of headaches.

Secondly, don’t let a lack of resources stop you.  Rather, get inventive with what you have at your disposal.  No cameras?  Enforce a 100% tagging policy.  Not enough staff?  Let your cashiers be your eyes and ears.  Improvisation is key to solving problems.

Employee Theft And Proper Employee Theft Investigations

An unfortunate reality of the retail business is that internal theft will occur.  By some estimates, internal theft accounts for over half of all loses across the retail sector.  Many companies are well equipped with teams of investigators to deal with employee theft.  For many smaller retailers this investment is not a reality.  Fortunately, there are companies out there are available for employee theft investigations.

These companies can provide your business with a thorough and conclusive employee theft investigation.  The process used is standard across the retail industry.  It has been developed and honed to produce consistent and measureable results.  When internal theft occurs, it is most often discovered after the fact.  This is why it is important to have a well-trained investigator complete the employee theft investigation.  The investigation should produce key information.  The first being who is responsible and the second being how the internal theft occurred.  These two pieces are invaluable to have when investigating employee theft.

These two pieces of investigative information are essential in developing a strategy for the interrogation/interview of the subject causing the employee theft.  It is during this phase of the employee theft investigation that it is discovered why the employee theft has occurred.  This is an important part of the overall process, as it allows the owner to discover what areas of their business are lacking.  Finally, at the end of the interview, the investigator can elicit information as to who else is involved in internal theft.  This gives the owner a greater return on their investment.  This is a proven process that is used by the industry leaders in the retail to investigate employee theft and internal theft.
