How far are you willing to trust someone?

When you hire an employee for your company, there is always a certain amount of apprehension involved. You want to make sure that this person is honest and hardworking. You want to know that they are going to make you proud and satisfied that you made a good hiring decision. The last thing you want is to hire someone who turns out to be completely different from the person they presented themselves as during the interview.

One way to ease some of the apprehension is to run a complete and thorough pre employment screening. This should include more than just a question and answer session. Having a skills or critical thinking test is a good way to get a different perspective at their capabilities.

Another way is to run an employee background check. This background check should include criminal and credit checks. You really need to take it a step further by verifying previous employment and education listed on their job applications.

Let’s Take A Look Inside That Bag

My most recent case of employee theft came about as a policy violation. I had a floating manager go lend a hand in one of my stores a few weeks ago. The Store’s manager, I guess, had forgotten that she was going to be there. As soon as she walked in the door, the SM suddenly realized that she had forgot to have someone ring up a pack of gum that she had clearly chewed most of.

While that didn’t seem like a huge red flag at the time, after my SM had left for the day, my visiting manger noticed that an employee was snacking up at the front registers. When asked, the employee said that they always do this and then whenever the SM has a chance, she comes by and rings them up.

By now, my visiting manger was starting to suspect that the door for employee theft was wide open. They called me to let me know that some things were not adding up.

The last clue came later on that night when they started taking the trash out. The store employees were putting everything into black, opaque trash bags instead of clear ones. Upon asking why they were being used, the employees said that it was what the SM used, so they did too.

It was clear that an employee theft investigation needed to begin. We were right too. The SM and a few other employees were all stealing. While we never did figure out how much was actually taken out of the store in those trash bags, we do know that it won’t happen again.

Life is too short

The right device for the right product

In my years of working in loss prevention I have seen some ridiculous misuses of company resources. Most of the time it involves company employees pulling dangerous or inane stunts with equipment that they think is funny. I have seen people driving scissor lifts through coffee shop drive-thrus and riding pallet jacks like skateboards. While such things fall within our realm of responsibility as liability issues they are actually not the worse misuse of equipment we can come across.

I am speaking specifically about incorrect or improper application of retail anti theft devices. Just the other day I came across fifty dollar sneakers in a store with Spider Wraps sealing the boxes. Now I understand some stores have issues with footwear theft and are looking to prevent shoplifting but Spider Wrapping boxes is somewhat extreme, rather time-consuming, and creates a hassle for when someone wants to try on or buy said shoes.

I have seen retail anti theft devices ineffectively attached to items (like putting cable locks on detachable or unsecured appendages), overused (putting a 2 Alarm AND Spider Wrap onto the same piece of product), or completely unused (EAS tags left in boxes instead of put on product). If you are trying to prevent shoplifting then you need to be mindful of how to correctly implement your anti-theft devices in order to protect your assets and also make sure you aren’t wasting your time and money in the long run.

Whenever you are ready

I say, “whenever you are ready” to my toddler, a lot. It is probably more sarcastic than it should be, but sometimes it helps me put things back into perspective. It helps me to remember that when I am dealing with her, I am on her time frame, not mine. It is one of the few times that I feel challenged to slow down, not to speed up.

In my professional life, “whenever you are ready” is more like “it should have been done 10 minutes ago”. I put this same urgency into clothing security. Clothing security tags can’t just be put on whenever someone feels like getting around to it. Those are the times that someone will come in and rob you blind.

Shoplifters, especially the professional ones, go out of their way to look for and exploit those situations. All it takes is one unlocked door, one stack of jeans without clothing security tags, and one moment of lethargy to add up to a very costly situation.

An Eye Witness Account

When I first started in Loss Prevention many years ago, not every store had a good CCTV camera system in place. One store in particular had the Frankenstein system. It was pieced together from so many different system that our new service vendor would not work on it because of how patched together it was.

This store firmly believed that an eyewitness testimony was still far superior to anything else. No one can contest an eyewitness account because there isn’t any other evidence on the contrary.

For some situations, they were absolutely right. That is until I brought my first employee theft investigation to a close.

$54,000 admitted dollars later; my store was starting to realize what they had been missing, literally. Without a usable CCTV system, they were missing not only live instances of theft, but they had no way to review to see how far the scope of an employee theft investigation could take them.

They had been relying on live shots of employee theft. They didn’t realize that if the employee theft investigation produces previous instances of theft, than you can potentially seek restitution. The only way to get that is to have a comprehensive CCTV system that not only allows you to see the live action, but also a recordable set up as well.

I recommend a digital system. Bigger storage capacity, longer retention, clearer recordings and no one had to remember to change out a day’s VHS tape.

When they don’t work alone

I am seeing more and more cases where my internal (employee) theft cases revolve around an employee and someone from the outside. That is just fine by me. When you have a single associate stealing, it can be problematic trying to find out how and where they are stealing.

When an employee is working with someone, I see more activity around the registers. It may sound strange, but it works out better for me in the long run.

Most of the time when an employee passes merchandise off to a buddy or relative, they move the product past the checkouts. It is to give the appearance that the items are being paid for. The other reason is that is where the detachers are to get rid of any checkpoint labels or checkpoint security tags that are present.

For a lot of retailers, the cash wraps are where the bulk of cameras are. So when an employee is at the register deactivating RF labels, we can see what is going on, as well as recording it for further evidence.

Keep It Under Wraps

As spring is well under way, so are many home improvement projects for homeowners. In the home improvement industry, the time from beginning of April through the fourth of July is the busiest time. Memorial day weekend is often compared to black Friday or Christmas. If most stores don’t make their sales during this time, their entire year’s projections can be shot.

I have spent many years trying to prevent shoplifting from happening in the home improvement stores that I have managed loss prevention for. I know that as this busy season increases sales, it also increases shoplifters and shoplifting attempts.

One of the best retail anti theft devices I have seen used is the Spider Wrap. I wish all stores were using the spider wraps. They are criss- crossed wires with a center disc joining them as they wrap around a box. The Spider Wrap keeps the boxes contents inside. If anyone attempts to tamper with the box, the Spider Wrap will alarm.

Shoplifters are not always well prepared. When they come across a Spider Wrap, there is no easy way to deactivate the alarm without it going off. The last thing a shoplifter wants is to draw attention to them, so it is a pretty good deterrent, I’d say. Keep it under wraps, and keep your shoplifters at bay.

Clothing Security: Keep Your Clothes Safe

If you own a business that sells clothing, chances are that you own a business that loses clothing too. If you do not have the luxury of having Loss Prevention in your store you must rely on two things to reduce your shrink/loss: Customer Service, and Deterrence. Clothing security encompasses a couple of tactics.

First, having security tags on clothes is vital as a visual deterrent. Shoplifters are less likely to steal merchandise if they notice clothing security tags on it such as checkpoint tags. Checkpoint tags are tags that clip onto clothing and sound an alarm once they pass a certain checkpoint (the door alarms). These tags go hand in hand with a clothing alarm. This brings me to my second method of clothing security.

A clothing alarm is a device set up by the exit doors that look like metal detectors. They activate and let off a loud noise when it senses merchandise with checkpoint tags still attached. Throughout my experience as a Loss Prevention Officer, I can tell you that the one thing a shoplifter hates is being noticed. And he or she will be noticed standing at a door with alarms going off.

Deterrence is extremely important in order to minimize loss and maximize profit. Investing in clothing security tags such as checkpoint tags, making sure proper placement of security tags on clothes, and having a clothing alarm to compliment the security devices are essential parts of maintaining clothing security.
