What you can’t see

I had a shoplifting apprehension the other day. We thought it was a pretty routine case. A male walked into the men’s wear department and picked up a shirt. He headed into the fitting room, so we sent an employee in to see if he needed any help.

After a few min, the male came back out of the fitting room with the shirt. He then walked into a far corner of the store. We watched as he took the shirt off the hanger, rolled it up tightly, and stuck it under his arm so no one would see it.

As he was leaving the store, the clothing alarm went off. At the time I didn’t think anything of it. We knew he hadn’t paid for the shirt at a register, so there was bound to be a clothing security tag left on it.

After we got him back into our office for processing, I picked up the shirt to catalogue the item number and description. I looked for the price tag to get the information, and as I turned the shirt around in my hand, it struck me that the shirt didn’t have a Checkpoint tag on it.

I then turned my attention to the suspect who was adamant about going to the bathroom. As it turned out, he had stuffed a pair of jeans into his jacket. They had a checkpoint tag which set the clothing alarm off.

Without the tag, we never would have known about the jeans he had stolen.

CEO or CE- Who?

There is a pretty big case in the media right now about a CEO of a major Internet company who has been caught lying about his qualifications on his resume. Had it not been for the background checks run by an investment firm, who knows how long this charade would have continued? It makes me wonder if anyone even would have known.

Clearly, a thorough background check was not done when this man was hired on. If it was, a simple verification of their school records would have shown that the degree they stated having, was not actually real.

It is just another reason why employee background checks are so important.

This company has been struggling in recent years, and having a CEO who was not as qualified as they originally thought may be playing its part in the company’s success. It would be impossible to say if someone else would have put the company in better standings, but to lie on a resume at the CEO level puts into question this persons scruples and trustworthiness.

It also puts into question the credentials of every other employee in this company. If the CEO can get away with a falsehood, how many other employees have either lied about their qualifications or previous work history.

Whether or not your company is struggling, every person employed must be held accountable to the standards of qualifications they have stated that they have.

A diamond in the rough

Have you ever gone to a store because you saw an ad for an item that was such a great deal that you couldn’t resist not going to check it out? While I try to keep my impulse shopping to a minimum, I can reluctantly say that on a rare occasion, I have been swayed.

Of course it always seems like this great sale is in the most inopportune place imaginable. I have convinced myself that driving for 30 min to the store across town to get that great bargain will be will worth the extra hassle.

After I have gotten there, I have often been severely disappointed in the inferior quality of the item. Sometimes, you really do just get what you pay for.

Other times, I have been so impressed with the sale that I can’t help but to rave about what a great find it was! It makes the drive and the time invested all worthwhile.

Cheap tags and cheap labels are the same way. Sometimes you find out that they are really just a cheap foreign made product not worth the time. Others like these cheap tags and cheap labels make it all worthwhile. They really are your diamond in the rough.

Get that grill fired up

It is time to make your plans for 4th of July weekend. Like all good red-blooded American holidays, we will eagerly await backyard BBQs, picnics in the park, swimming, finishing some to-dos, and of course scouring the best sales in the area.

That also means that the stores will be full of shoplifters eagerly awaiting the distractions around them, so that they may conceal their criminal activities. One of the best preparations you can do is to make sure your anti theft devices are in place now and through the start of 4th of July weekend.

Waiting until the Friday before to do some auditing and then hoping they are correct will be too late. Your stores will be (hopefully) way to busy to deal with preparations of this kind.

Plan ahead so that you and your staff can actually enjoy the holiday shoppers knowing that your inventory is secure and your anti shoplifting practices are ready to go.

When you finally get to go home to your own celebrations, rest and relax knowing your preparations paid off.

Who is watching your back door?

Some bigger stores have the luxury of an employee only entrance. It is great to help mitigate and control internal theft. Usually these retailers have some sort of door guard or watchman. They check bags and refunds as well as signing off on employee purchases. They can also keep an eye out for any live retail anti theft devices that may have accidentally (or otherwise) not been deactivated.

For the rest of us, it is not always that easy. While there might still be an approved entrance and/ or exit there is always a back door. The back door is generally used for trash and receipt of deliveries. Any security measures taken there are not specifically designed to prevent shoplifting, but rather to prevent employee theft.

Unless there is someone watching this door, this is a big area for employee theft to happen. Many employees will try to find ways to sneak merchandise out the back.

This is where a device like the Nano Gate comes in handy. It is compact in design enabling it to hang discreetly on a wall out of the way of damage. The big bulky EAS towers would not be conducive to receiving a truck full of merchandise boxed up. A Nano Gate would be a much better fit.

By having an extra alarm creates one more step an employee stealing would have to thwart. They would no longer be able to sneak EAS tagged merchandise out the back door and try to deactivate tags in the privacy of their own home. The Nano Gate would, if nothing else cut down on the high dollar items walking out the back.

Tie One On

One often-overlooked piece of clothing that can cause a significant amount of shrink is men’s ties. Right now millions of teenage and adult men are looking for ties. They need them for proms, and commencement ceremonies, job interviews, and don’t forget Father’s day is just around the corner. What Dad hasn’t received the ubiquitous tie as a present there?

Clothing security tags aren’t just for the rest of a man’s wardrobe. Ties need their own clothing security as well. Ties pose a specific risk because they can be easily concealed. Ties can be rolled up and shoved into a pocket, or they can be stretched flat against a shoplifter’s body. Ties can even be tied on and worn out the door.

Because ties can easily range from $30 to well over $100 or even two hundred dollars a shot, any losses can add up quickly.

Clothing security in the way of soft labels is the easiest way to go. While you can use a hard tag, I would caution as to where you attach it. Since most ties are a silk, or silk blend, the EAS tag’s pins can easily catch, creating a run and ruining the tie.

Don’t get caught off guard because you were too busy trying to protect your other merchandise. Don’t forget to tie one on.

What is the worst that could happen?

No employee is safe. Consistent pre employment screening is a critical part of your company’s ultimate success rate. You might be asking yourself that if you don’t run employee background checks, what, really is the worst that could happen?

The first thing you need to know, is that almost 50% of applicants looking for jobs have some sort of embellishment on their job applications or resumes. Sometimes it might be a simple stretch of their actual job responsibilities or duties.

Sometimes it might be a stretch of dates a job was held to try and cover up a gap in employment. Maybe it is the salary they made, because they are trying to get more money at their next job.

Sometimes, it might be a complete fabrication of a college degree obtained, or of the actual job position held. One should question if they really do hold the necessary competencies required to fulfill the job demands and requirements.

During a pre employment screening, any of these potential discrepancies should come to light. It would be a time to actually question the applicant to find out what they are going to say, and of course how deep does their lie go.

Employee background checks are critical to determining your company’s success. If all you employ are under qualified and overpaid employees, how far do you really think your success will go? Even if it is just one employee out of the whole company, are you willing to risk your future on their lies?

Employee Theft – Caught on Tape

A common focus for businesses is to find and stop shoplifters from stealing merchandise, but they aren’t the only people who you have to keep an eye on. An employee, who know the in and outs, patterns and schedules could be your biggest trouble.

As a Loss Prevention Agent I’ve conducted internal theft investigations with great success. I have found greatest tool to stopping employee theft are not my eyes but the many eyes above. At anytime I can review tapes of high shrink and cash areas. This has assisted me from stopping internal theft at the cash registers. Most recently an employee would not ring up multiple items and pocket the cash. This was only caught by reviewing the camera tapes above their register.

A technique my store uses to scare off any shoplifters is a monitor above the front entrance that lets everybody know you are being watched and recorded. This monitor shows the front entrance and main cashier where most merchandise is being handled.

Another type of theft that is unfortunately common among workers is employee theft of one another. Most of the time it will happen in the break room, it will have low traffic thus leading some employees to believe this is a safe area for leaving their possessions on top of lockers or on tables. Prevention is the best solution, lock up all your possessions and don’t forget that new MP3 player in your jacket pocket.

Why Do Tags Work

When you are looking for retail security tools and resources, one of the first things you will come across are EAS Tags and Labels. They are the industry standard in anti theft devices for several reasons. When you are making a decision to invest in any retail security measure, it is best to know all the potential advantages of using that item.

One of the biggest advantages is recognition. Because almost every big box retailer uses EAS tags and labels for anti shoplifting, the typical American shopper knows what they are. They are aware that the alarm will sound if the tags and labels aren’t properly removed.

Shoplifters are also keenly aware of how hard they are to defeat. Without the proper deactivators or detachers, it is virtually impossible to defeat discreetly.

The tags and labels are easy to use. Tags are simple to attach to merchandise and come in a wide variety of applications. Same thing goes for the EAS labels.

Cheap tags and cheap labels are available for the budget conscious. There is no need to break the bank trying to stop shoplifting.

Make a wise decision and use the tools that will give you the most well rounded resource available.

The Demand Curve

In economics, there is a principle called the demand curve. It is defined as a consumer’s willingness to pay for goods is directly related to the utility derived from consumption of the unit. Basically, the more someone wants something because of its value or use, the higher the price they are willing to pay for it.

In the retail security world, the price someone is willing to pay for an item may not be just monetary. If an item is deemed valuable enough, or needed enough, some people will go to any lengths to obtain it.

That can include any number of ways to get it on sale, or at a discount from coupons.  I have seen people damage items to get a reduction in price. I have also seen my share of fraud, and of course theft.

Shoplifters can be willing to pay the price of their own freedom to obtain an item they desperately want or need. They are willing to throw away their reputation, careers, and, of course, run the risk of incarceration just to get those items.
