Is Your Retail Security Up To Par?

Ever since the downfall of the economy I have noticed a spike in thefts from the retail establishment where I am a loss prevention officer. Retail security has become a major focus now because of this. During meetings my manager and I stress the importance of not only customer service, but utilizing anti-shoplifting tactics and anti-theft devices in order to make sure the only merchandise leaving store is paid for.

Two examples of anti-theft devices which are inexpensive are cheap tags and cheap labels. Cheap tags come in all different forms to fit the needs of your business and simply clip onto merchandise to act as a visual deterrent. Cheap labels compliment the anti-theft devices by providing further warning to the would-be thief. If a tag is placed incorrectly where it is not visible, the label stating that that particular item is protected will help in scaring off shoplifters.

By making sure your retail security habits and anti-shoplifting mindset are a top priority, you will have a better night sleep the night before inventory.

Employee Theft: The Silent Killer

The biggest killer of small businesses is employee theft. Most small business owners have little or no experience in the field of Loss Prevention thus never seeing first hand the ravages employee theft can wreak upon a business if left unchecked. There are many tools that can both deter and catch a thieving employee. A business owner’s main goal should be to deter internal theft. There are several ways to deter employees from stealing but nothing is guaranteed to work 100%.

If an employee has their mind set to steal then losses will occur, it then becomes a cat and mouse game to catch this employee. Once again most small business owners have never conducted a quality employee theft investigation. One of the best ways to either deter or catch a employee stealing is purchasing a quality CCTV system. Once again, you can but the best camera system in town but you have to set it up so as to be able maximize the deterrence value and to be able to catch the employee stealing either product or cash.

I have performed many LP consultations for small business owners who had unfortunately never gave a thought to internal theft believing that they had the best employees on the planet since they were mostly either family or friends. Many times the consultation started off with me conducting an employee theft investigation and catching their employees “red handed” stealing from their businesses. At that point we had to discuss what mistakes they had made in setting up their business and how we could change it to deter further internal theft. Numerous times it started with the purchase and set up of a good CCTV system. I always ensured the registers were adequately covered to catch any “till taps” or product pass off’s known as “sweet hearting”. The next area I would ensure was covered was the stockroom where shipping and receiving occurred, a lot of product can disappear out the back door or be concealed in the stockroom. I would also suggest the owners implement a bag/pocket check to be conducted and logged every time an employee left the premises for any reason.

These few changes in a small business owner’s mindset and strategy saved their businesses. Purchasing and implementing the right tools allowed them to deter theft and conduct quality employee theft investigations. Deterrence is the key however when losses occur having the capability to switch to investigation mode will benefit any business owner.

Better than Garlic

This time of year, it would maybe seem a little unusual to start talking about vampires and other ghouls walking amongst the living. When it comes to retail security and protecting retailers form theft, there is actually a strange connection between the two.

Think about the common vampire character. They walk around looking and acting like they are no different than you or I. The closer you get, the more you discover that they are willing to swindle, defraud, con, or just plain take whatever they want without care or regard to anyone else.

I personally see no difference between that and your everyday, commonplace shoplifter.

Instead of using garlic and wooden stakes to fend off vampires, shoplifters require their own tools. Anti theft devices like cheap tags and cheap labels work efficiently to send shoplifters back to the seedy undergrounds that they came from.

Just like any other Hollywood horror story, let the good guys win in the end. Use the right tools in the right way to outsmart to evildoers in the world. A little dramatic, maybe, but the underlying principle stands true.

Making Your Business More Profitable with Clothing Security

Many businesses find themselves at a point when the investment in clothing security measures becomes a harsh reality to them.  They might have thought they could go without for a while but eventually the shrink numbers are just too high to avoid it any longer. This investment most often comes in the form of various security tags on clothes or clothing alarms.  The use of clothing security tags is the primary security deterrent used by businesses worldwide.  Clothing security tags also known as electronic article surveillance (EAS) tags provide the user with a physical theft deterrent, which can be used as a part of an overall loss prevention strategy.

These security tags on clothes can act as an active or passive security system. Many clothing security tags are used as an element to work in conjunction with an overall electronic article system.  The electronic article systems also works with various clothing alarms, which can give an immediate notification of removal from the system.  This notification is most often an audible clothing alarm that is triggered.  As a passive system, clothing security tags present themselves as a visual deterrent to shoplifters.  The application of clothing security tags will deter many if not the majority of shoplifters from your place of business.

While working for a major international retailer, I was involved in the planning and implementation of a clothing security strategy.  This strategy was a response to an increase in shoplifting across our brand.  After instituting the clothing security systems, which included clothing alarms and security tags on clothes the company noticed a drastic reduction in clothing theft and better profit margins at the store level.  The use of clothing security had a large and positive impact on profit margins and moral for the company’s stores.

The use of clothing security can benefit both small and large retail businesses.  It allows the business owner to control their loss and lower the bottom line.  This can improve the business profit margins and create a safer environment for employees.

Picking the best Background Check Company can be difficult.

It is not hard to find a Background Check Company, but it can be difficult to find the right one.  Employee background checks and pre employment screening are vital to any business.  When looking for a good Background Check Company I recommend finding one that utilizes Employee background check experts.

Some companies simply push information to the local police and say they did thorough criminal background checks.  In reality a real Background Check Company will do much more than that.  They will utilize background check experts to query information from a variety of police departments and state agencies.  They can also look at financial information and other factors that may be important to paint a good picture of your potential candidate.

A reputable Background Check Company will also offer a good pre employment screening service.  The pre employment screening can cover drug testing, personality tests as well as other aptitude information.  All of these things are important when choosing to bring a stranger into your business and entrusting them with your customers, your merchandise and your money.

Today, background checks are increasingly affordable.  Modern technology makes background checks much easier which in turn makes them a more affordable service to offer.  It also makes conducing employee background checks more sensible.  If you needed to put together a bookcase would you use an old-fashioned screwdriver or a new powered screwdriver?  Most people would use the newer option since it is available and makes the job easier.  To that end, you can simply rely on the old-fashioned interview and hope you pick the right candidate (which is not an exact science) or you can also add criminal background checks and pre employment screening to improve success in this process.  The decision seems easy.

Don’t let the “What Ifs” Slow You Down

Any time I have ever worked on an employee theft investigation, there is always a series of “What Ifs” to go through. What if we had better controls in place? What if we hadn’t trusted them with the keys? What if we had noticed / paid attention to their personal problems? The list can go on and on.

It would be easy to let all those little what ifs slow you down. I know my store managers have a harder time with them because they take cases of employee theft personally. I tend to look at it as an unfortunate reality of the retail industry.

It is hard to get other managers and owners to become aware that statistically 2% of employees are stealing at any given point in time. Most managers, and especially small business owners have a hard time believing that an employee could be stealing from them.

If you have put your heart and soul and often your personal finances on the line as a small business owner, you tend to imagine that all of your employees (that you personally hired) are doing the same.

When I am called in for cases that revolve around high inventory costs, one of the last things an owner expects to hear is that I need to start an employee theft investigation.

When they see the end results, they are in shock and start to second-guess themselves with what ifs. While there are ways to prevent employee theft, sometimes you just have to realize that they would have found a way to steal, and it is time to move on.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Earth Day just passed, and with it all of the handy tips and lists of how we can each do our part to save the planet. One by one they rolled out their top five or ten do’s and don’ts to protect the environment. As we look to reduce our shrink, we can use anti theft devices as part of a green retail security plan to compliment our anti shoplifting tactics.

EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) hard tags are a wonderful eco-friendly device. Even though the hard tags are made of plastic (which is generally not an environmentally friendly choice) they are still a green solution.

The main reason: EAS hard tags are reusable. This handy little anti theft device can be used over and over again. The tags go on the product before they are put on display for sale. At the wrap stands, your cashiers remove the tags.

The easiest way to recycle them is to set up two separate bins. Put the tags in one and the pins in another. Then you simply take the full bins back to your receiving area to be reattached onto the incoming merchandise.

Go Ahead, Put It On Display

When someone wants to purchase an item, they want to see it. They want to put their hands on it and test it out. While that is a good thing for a consumer to want, not every customer is respectful in how they inspect their potential purchase.

I see slews of open packaging around my stores from customers who insist on opening up a box to look at an item they potentially want to purchase. Even when a display is available, they have a real need to open the box.

Most of them do it out of curiosity to really “see” their item. They are also worried that they need to inspect an item for damages. Not realizing how big of a mess they will make when they start to undo tape and cardboard and Styrofoam, and user manuals. The list goes on.

Depending on how well it is packed, some customers give it up as a bad job long before they even get to the merchandise inside. All to often, the irony hits as they look for damages, they end up breaking or dropping the items trying to get it unpacked.

When you use a spider wrap you are doing more for your inventory than just preventing shoplifting. You are helping to facilitate damage reduction through proper customer service.

This retail anti theft device forces a customer to an associate for help. The Spider Wrap can be undone at any register, so you associates can carefully open boxes to look for damages without causing more of them.

Go ahead and put your products on display. Spider Wraps will keep your displays usable and your boxes damage free.

Watch Where You Put That Thing

When you are using clothing security tags to protect your clothing inventory, it is necessary to find a consistent and customer friendly place to attach them. When I conduct my audits, I have seen that some stores do not do a very good job with their consistency. As a result, their clothing security is less than stellar.

One of the key points of good clothing security is to eliminate false clothing alarms. If the alarm is registering constantly, it becomes about as effective as hearing a car alarm in a parking lot. When was the last time anyone took those seriously?

If you put your security tags on clothes in the same place each and every time, then you cashiers all know when and where to look for them. Often the clothing alarms that I respond to have a tag in the improper place.

When we push our cashiers for fast and friendly check outs, we need to understand that if a tag isn’t where it is supposed to be, they rarely will take the time to search the entire garment just to see if there is possibly a tag on there.

By having one set place for security tags on clothes to be attached, you eliminate the guesswork for a cashier. You also reduce the amount of false alarms, and unhappy customers who have been delayed and embarrassed by that same alarm.
