Glad they were there

A woman came into the store with a baby stroller over the weekend. While she didn’t do anything right away that caught my attention, I had a gut feeling that I needed to watch her.

It wasn’t long before I realized that my suspicions were right. As she was walking around the men’s department, she started to run her hands down the legs of some pants. As soon as found the clothing security tags, she moved on to the next pair. Because she never looked for a specific size of pants, I knew something was a bit fishy.

She continued on this way around the department, until she found a shirt that did not have any clothing security tags. Down she went, and a split second later the shirt was shoved under the basket of the stroller.

She hid the shirt so fast, that if you had not been already watching, you never would have noticed a thing. She went through the rest of the men’s department and then on towards the women’s section.

Sure enough, she followed the same process of looking for security tags on clothes. Two more shirts and a pair of sunglasses later she was out walking through the doors, knowing that she would not set off a clothing alarm with her choices.

We were there to make the apprehension, much to her surprise. Had it not been for the security tags on clothes that she had to sort through, I might not have spotted her.

Promote from within

I recently went on a job interview with a company that was trying to hire me for a loss prevention position. They said right from the beginning that they knew I was overqualified for the position they were offering me.

Even though they had the next level position open, they wanted me at a step down. The reason was that they like to promote from within. It was very rare that they would hire external candidates for upper level positions.

In a lot of ways, that is a very smart business move. To promote from within gives several advantages over hiring from the outside. Even with pre employment screening, some things you can’t always track, like work ethic.

Being able to watch and experience first hand how an employee responds to situations will never show up on a pre employment screening. This knowledge can help determine if a promotion is warranted based on the first hand knowledge of their skill sets.

Promoting from within is also a great motivator for your existing employees as they feel that advancement opportunities are attainable.

When a company does promote from inside its ranks, take care in conducting further employee background checks.

Sweetheart deals aren’t just for Valentine’s Day

In the world of employee theft investigations, a sweetheart deal does not refer to any sort of Valentine’s Day sales event. It is talking about employee theft where an employee gives away product or unauthorized discounts at the point of sale.

Sweetheart deals are also referred to as pass offs. There are common scenarios we watch for when we are reviewing/-conducting surveillance for an employee theft investigation.

A straight pass off is when a cashier gives away merchandise to a friend or relative. There is no sale generated.

A variation is when an employee pretends to ring up the transaction. They may scan the items and then later void them out. They might also print out a receipt that shows an estimate of the product, but no sale is actually conducted.

Sometimes the employee theft will only involve partial payment for the contents of their friend’s shopping cart. They might ring up a few low dollar items, but slide the expensive ones. I had an employee theft investigation where the cashier would “forget” to ring up the large items on the bottom of her boyfriend’s cart.

While this list is not exclusive, these are typical employee theft scenarios that occur regardless of retail niche or product sold. Sometimes there might be a creative twist to the employee theft, but the overall concepts are the same.

Build a reputation

Over the years of working in the service and retail industry, I have come to rely on my vendors very heavily. Building a good relationship with them has helped my operations run much more smoothly. When I need something, I usually have a specific person I can call who will help me out in a pinch.

In retail security, time is often of the essence. If surveillance or EAS equipment breaks down, I can’t wait for weeks or even a few days for a repair to be made. My anti shoplifting processes can completely unravel in that amount of time.

Too loose, too tight, too heavy, too light

Oh loose jewelry, how I detest loose jewelry. It never fails that every time I walk by a spinner of loose jewelry like necklaces or bracelets, I always see a huge mess.

Some of the price tags have been torn or ripped off. Necklaces are twisted together and bracelets never seem to fit back on to whatever peg they came from. I also see the remnants of the hang tags stuffed into odd corners of the store, presumably from shoplifters trying to defeat any retail anti theft devices (like soft tags) that may be hidden within.

When we try to prevent shoplifting, it is very important not to compromise the visual aesthetics of a counter top display or even a display mannequin with our security tags.

To start with, the Jewel Lok only weighs about 5 grams, which is very little weight. It won’t drag a necklace down or make a bracelet hang weird in a presentation piece.
