What Are Your Qualifications?

Forget about your potential employees’ qualifications for a moment. Think about what are your qualifications, or what are the qualifications of your HR managers?

Very few people are qualified to be background check experts. It’s not that it is difficult, it is because it is a time consuming qualification that very few people have put in the hours to prefect.

Being a background check expert means more than just filling out a few forms on the computer and hitting enter. It is about utilizing resources, analyzing reports, and being adept at asking the right questions to personal and professional references.

I personally rely on the knowledge and experience of experts. I am aware that I cannot be an expert in every subject that could ever possibly arise.

I need to be able to have a broad understanding of the process and what to look for, for potential red flags, but the bulk of the pre employment screening as well as the employee background checks for existing employees should be sent out to a true background check expert.

These experts will also have a keen working knowledge of the legalities involved in running these pre employment screenings and employee background checks.

My qualifications do not cover background checks. My HR manager is more qualified than I am, but she still is not an expert in background checks.

It is time to let the professionals be the experts and have them run background checks completely and thoroughly.

The obvious solution

Have you seen the Value point and value point plus cheap labels yet? If not, definitely go and check them out. I just got my free samples of them and they are pretty amazing.

I was showing the selection to one of my store managers, and he saw that one of the labels was already printed saying, “Security device enclosed”. He was unsure as to why an anti theft device would be so obvious. He thought they should be hidden and secretive.

We talked about how retail security isn’t always about the “gotcha” aspect. It is often about prevention. By having a label state that it is in fact a security device designed specifically for anti shoplifting, it is trying to be a warning.

It is obvious that the inventory is under surveillance and protection. If a potential criminal knows that this piece of merchandise, or this store is not an easy target, they area more likely to move onto the next target. Some of them won’t even steal at all.

Sometimes it takes an obvious solution to an obvious problem.

Simplified Retail Security…

I am often amazed at how complex we as business leaders tend to make things.  In an effort to always do more and do it better we sometimes just overcomplicate proven processes.  Take retail security for example.  I am amazed at how many different providers there are of anti-shoplifting tools.  Last I checked all EAS tags were created equally.

Think about it.  It is the same technology.  Whether you get name brand EAS tags or you get cheap tags you will still be preventing loss by protecting your product.  Anti-theft devices are unnerving for most shoplifters.  Most major studies show that the overwhelming offender is an amateur.  This type of shoplifter only knows one thing; anti-theft devices will get you caught.  If they don’t care whose name is on the tag then why do we?  Why pay for a name brand tag when cheap tags and cheap labels still deter theft.  When you consider switching to less expensive equipment you will still deter theft and save on expenses.  I think that’s called a win-win situation.

Employee Theft is No Big Deal

Over a span of almost ten years in the loss prevention field, I have been involved with numerous employee theft investigations.  Unlike shoplifting cases, most companies want to know why an employee would turn to theft.  I would sit down on average 30-40 times per year with numerous associates asking just that question.  I will never forget the first time I heard an employee say, “the company has so much money, so I thought it was no big deal”.

No big deal??  I was taken aback by this very statement.  How can an associate with whom I’ve engaged numerous times feel internal theft was no big deal?  I had followed company programs, showed the standard employee theft investigation video during orientation, engaged in multiple conversations about theft, etc.  By the conclusion of the interview, we discussed at length the impact internal theft has, not only on the company, but on the individual stores and their employees.  They seemed to understand, but it was a huge wakeup call for me and my approach to the topic of employee theft.

Talking to associates about internal theft can be difficult and uncomfortable.  I’ve seen a drastic difference in companies that drug screen and run full background checks pre-hire vs. companies that do not.  While it may seem aggressive and costly, taking such a drastic approach on preventing employee theft prior to employment, gives associates a different mindset while on the job.  It’s been my experience that approaching the subject of internal theft and how employee theft investigations are conducted seems to be a lot easier after such intense screenings.  Showing them where cameras are located will act as a visual deterrent, not push them into spots where there is no coverage.  I am a firm believer that companies who hit the topic hard and aggressive prior to employment and keep the conversations and visual deterrence present to combat employee theft.

Change it up

How cool is it to be able to change things on a whim. Any time the seasons change, we can change clothes. If we want to go with a new hairstyle, go for it! The power of choice gives us the power to adapt as needed.

Retail security in the form of anti theft devices also gives us the power of change. Any time our products change, we can either start a new tagging process, or stop an existing one. Seeing a spike in shrink losses in a different area? That’s an easy fix too.

Anti shoplifting devices are designed to be adaptable. That is why hard tags are easy to attach as needed, and soft tags or labels can be applied to almost any surface or material.

Because the soft tags or labels can be run through a thermal printer, they can even be disguised as bar codes or price labels to fit your specific range of products.

There is no need to let your retail security grow stagnate. Just change it up as you change out your products.

Incremental sales to major losses

Jewelry and accessories are a fun part of working in retail. Although it is typical to find fashion accessories in most clothing retailers, I have noticed a trend in not so traditional stores selling jewelry.

They are mostly located up at the wrap stands for add on sales. Even more retailers are selling them during the holiday shopping season, and for retail, it is never to late to start thinking about holiday sales.

I was working in a home fashions boutique and we would periodically get in shipments of little bracelets. Because we really had no need for retail anti theft devices (EAS) on the majority of our merchandise (hard tag a couch? Not so much.) We would see a huge issue with theft on our bracelets.

Even at $5 or $10 dollars a pop, these little wonders sure did a number on our shrink. Because we did such a low volume of sales, these losses really added up.

It would have been nice to have access to a great new product like the Jewel Lok. Designed to work with the existing systems, Jewel Loks are tiny little locks that (for bracelets) are like a mini padlock.

The protective coating makes sure that the hoop does not scratch the bracelet. The detachers are also relatively small. Because of the space constraints, it would have been nice to have a system that felt like it was designed just for our needs. Exactly what the Jewel Loks are designed to do.

Secured Sandals

I dripped a sweat walking to my car parked in my driveway today-summer has arrived. Regardless of what region you reside in, we can all agree that it is HOT. Change of season translates to one thing in retail: new wardrobe. Bright colors, short sleeves and linen are the mode this year.

Growing up a South Florida native, the number one summer staple (well, year-round) is flip-flops. Young, old, fat, skinny, well-dressed or out of style, everyone is sure to have at least one pair of sandals in their closet.

Flip-flops, along with other shoes, can be an easy item to steal if they are not properly tagged.

A shoplifter can easily slip off their old pair and slide into new ones. Some stores do not have space to keep shoes stocked and instead place them on racks or as open-sell items in boxes. Stores that leave pairs out for display should have checkpoint tags attached to them to prevent theft.

The ideal way to sensor flip-flops is to attach the pair of shoes together and secure them with a clothing alarm. Also, knowing what merchandise is new in season and in style can help you determine which areas to offer special attention. Taking the time to ensure that there are proper security tags on clothes will make them less vulnerable to theft.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase a clothing alarm or clothing security tags and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Asking the right questions

Getting all of the answers you need to hire a legitimately qualified candidate can be difficult. Standard job applications only cover basics of position applied for, availability, and previous work and education history.

Resumes are little better, they might be more descriptive as to what an applicant does or did at their previous places of employment, but they can also carry a web of deceit.

The reality is, without running a background check to verify information, who knows how much embellishment is actually on those pieces of paper.

Background checks sometimes are limited to what they can uncover. For example, some employers will only release the dates that an employee worked for their company. They may not give a reason why.

That leaves it up to the applicant to decide to tell the complete truth as to why they no longer are working for that company.

A background check expert will be more versed in uncovering the truth. They can call upon an applicant’s personal and professional references.

Did you know that often time references are not aware that they have been listed on an application? They also may not know exactly what they should and shouldn’t say about someone, and may give more information than they should.

A background check expert also knows how to ask other non-work related questions to get the answers you really need. Want to really know what a reference thinks? Ask them if they would let the applicant house sit or baby sit for them. Their answers might be very telling of what kind of work they will do for you.

Two Sides To Every Story

Just like there are two sides to every story, there are also two sides to every EAS tag. These anti theft devices, designed to enhance your retail security, come with two separate and distinct sides.

There is the pin side of the EAS tag. It looks and acts just like it sounds like it should. It is a metal pin attached to a plastic end. The pin pierces the item to be tagged, and is fitted into the hole in the larger, plastic tag side.

This piece is actually two separate pieces fused together. Inside is the actual EAS tag component that sets the alarms off if it is not deactivated prior to leaving the store.

Even in the cheap tags you want to make sure you have a relatively seamless construction within this side of the anti theft device.

If you don’t shoplifters, can easily pry that piece apart to eliminate the tag within. This would allow them to escape with the merchandise undetected and then removing the rest of the pin at their convenience.

Help Put the Shoe on the Other Foot with Anti-Theft Devices

While working as a Loss Prevention agent for a clothing retailer, our shoes were literally walking out the door…on the feet of shoplifters. Our daily routine included visits to our office by associates from the shoe department who found a box containing dirty and worn footwear that someone decided to swap out with our merchandise. We tried to watch the cameras for the shoe aisles as often as we could to try to detect if any customers were displaying indicators that revealed their intention to make off with our shoes. Alas, it turned out that there were too many footwear thieves and too little LP employees for detainments to tighten up our retail security in the shoe department.

The loss to the department and store was so devastating that my employer realized the need to invest in anti-shoplifting tags to prevent this problem from getting the best of us. Immediately the efficacy of the anti-theft devices became apparent, when at first the amount of shoe swap outs halted completely.

However, within a week certain shoplifters came prepared with cutting tools to defeat the tags. On the other hand, the time it took to try to remove the sensor prolonged the thief’s time in the store and it was a pretty noticeable activity. In addition, when we arrested these equipped individuals the police often charged them with burglary because of the instrument in their possession.

Best of all, the utilization of these tags helped us keep retail security in my store under control and the number of shoe swap outs was decreased by more than seventy-five percent. The anti-theft devices helped us stop dishonest customers from effortlessly walking countless miles in our shoes for free.
