Don’t let shoplifters scare your Halloween profits. Use Clothing Security Tags.

With the holidays fast approaching, many businesses are getting ready for an increase of sales that comes with this being the busiest retail time of the year. The increased customer base can translate to more money for your business, but it can also mean more people trying to steal your merchandise. The last thing you want to be worried about is theft. One of the best ways to utilize clothing security is through security tags on clothes.

With clothing security tags, you can be more worried about ghosts and ghouls than shoplifters. At the stores I cover as a loss prevention agent, the managers and associates want to place their full focus on ensuring the customer has an awesome experience in finding the perfect clothes for their friends and family. Not all stores have the resources for a full loss prevention team so utilizing Checkpoint tags can make a huge difference in putting a scare on the holiday shoplifters that can plague your store.

Clothing security tags are easy and quick to install. They work with the entire clothing security system to sound an alarm when someone attempts to take your merchandise outside of the store. They do what all shoplifters want to avoid: draw attention. Shoplifters are familiar with clothing alarm devices and they would rather go somewhere else than risk getting caught removing the security tags on clothes. The devices keep the merchandise on the shelves so your customers can find the perfect presents.

Instead of letting the shoplifters put the “boo” in your night, install clothing security tags and scare those thieves away!

Making the exception

When you work in the loss prevention or asset protection department, a large part of your daily routine is to look for and to begin employee theft investigations. Often the cases you start to develop are what we commonly refer to as “low hanging fruit”.

These are the employee theft investigations that you really don’t have to search for. They tend to fall in your lap from either blatant stupidity on the part of an employee, or they show up on an obvious exception report.

For those who haven’t worked with an exception report before, let me just say that you are missing out. These reports are designed to eliminate a major amount of time researching transaction and journal tapes. It’s sort of the cliff notes version of transaction research.

Exception reports clarify employee theft investigations by giving not only specific information (like a dollar amount) but also time, date, and MO.

Exception reports can be anything from a no sale conducted after a cash transaction, to post voids. They can even incorporate statistical analysis based on the store’s norms.  For example, you can see cashiers who have a higher refund percentage in both transactions and dollar amounts.

By utilizing the work that the exception reports has already done for you, you can spend more of your time conducting live surveillance. You can also make sure that you have captured a higher percentage of fraudulent or loss incurring transactions than if you had to scour the paper trail on your own.

New venue, ancient equipment

It is a sad fact that in today’s job market and national economy a lot of us in the Retail Security or Operations field end up having to move about quite a bit.  More often than not the reason is that the company you were working for didn’t have the budget to keep you (or even your whole department) on the payroll.  I understand fully the need for corporations to ‘trim the fat’ in order to survive but the area they certainly shouldn’t be skimping on is Retail Security or a fairly current suite of Anti-Theft Devices.

A few months back I fell victim to the budget cut goblins at a certain retail firm but was quickly picked up by another company looking to completely rebuild their Loss Prevention department from the ground up.  They had a lot of great ideas as they pertained to Anti-Shoplifting setups and deterrence over apprehension but there was one major problem; not a single piece of their Anti-Theft Device inventory was younger than twenty years old.  In fact most of it was much older.

If you have a store that is trying to cut back on spending but not on Loss Prevention make sure they consider all the Anti-Shoplifting alternatives so you don’t feel like you are fighting high-tech, computer savvy thieves with old-fashioned, pre-calculator equipment.

It will have you jumping through hoops

Solutions to prevent shoplifting accessories like hoop earrings are hard to come by. Hard tags are too bulky to hook onto the earring cards. Even the smaller fashion tags are bulky when used on such a small surface area. They are also not very nice to look at and detract from pristine jewelry displays.

Soft tags, which can be embedded into the jewelry cards, are not an effective retail anti theft device. The soft tags are either torn off, or the cards themselves are discarded as a shoplifter conceals the earrings.

Using the new Jewel Lok retail anti theft devices is the new best practice solution that has been tested in several retail stores already. What they have found is that the Jewel Lok is not only simple to use, but also simple to remove at the point of sale and has a much better success rate than its soft tag counterparts.

There are two locking mechanisms for the Hoop Earring Jewel Loks. The go through the hole in the jewelry card, and the earring slides through the lock and the push buttons lock them securely in place.

On a side note, the Jewel Loks are reversible so you can use them on either the right or left earring.

To remove the locks, just place them on the detacher and push the buttons again to release. Just make sure you don’t put credit cards on the detacher as it may demagnetize the strips on the back of credit or debit cards.

Are shoplifters putting the “low” in your Halloween sales? Time to start thinking about clothing security!

Halloween is fast approaching us and there is nothing scarier for a business owner than to see their merchandise being stolen. Even if thieves steal only one item, that one item will not only impact your profits but it means you have to sell even more just to make up for the stolen goods. Now that is something that can really damper the holiday spirit.

So how can you protect your store from theft? One of the most cost effective ways is to implement clothing security tags such as the Checkpoint tags. These devices come in all sizes to fit the needs of your business. However, they share a fundamental element: they will provide valuable clothing security in your store. There are some labels that can be hidden underneath barcodes on fragrances and other boxed merchandise. There are also clothing security tags which conveniently and discreetly attach to clothing items. If a thief had a choice between attempting to steal the item with clothing security tags and going down the block to the store without any protection, which store do you think they would rather steal from? The choice is easy.

Preventing theft in your store doesn’t require a full surveillance team. Many of the thieves can be scared away simply by the sight of security tags on clothes. Clothing security can ensure your product stays where it is supposed to: on your shelves or in the hands of your customers. So don’t let shoplifters trick or treat in your store. Scare them away with Checkpoint tags!

So you think you know

Most people think that they know all about clothing security just because they know of Checkpoint tags. But what a lot of people, and business may not know is the extent of the products that Checkpoint tags come in.

Clothing security tags go far beyond just the old school hard tags and soft tags that set of the clothing alarms at the doors.

The security tags on clothes now come in more sleek, discreet, and varied configurations than ever before. The products even come with varying levels of security awareness and prevention.

Take the Alpha Security line of 3 Alarm products. They are designed to work with more specific solutions that their one alarm products. A 3 Alarm product has three levels of security.

It takes the traditional one alarm (which is the traditional alarm at the door) and adds on to it. It also has a tamper alarm. If someone tries to tamper or disable the alarm mechanism before they leave the store, the alarm on the product itself will go off.

Finally the stage three is the alarm if the product does leave the store before being deactivated. This comes in handy in “grab n run” scenarios. The alarm will not only sound as it passes through the pedestals, but the alarm will continue to go off for a full ten minutes after it has been activated.

Secondary Territory

We all have a comfort zone. It starts at our house. That is where we can kick back, relax and be ourselves. We create our own little environments perfectly suited to our desires and tastes.

Once we have our home territory in satisfactory mental comfort, we start to move on. We have secondary territories that turn out to be an extension of our homes. These are places like a familiar restaurant, a good friend or even a relative’s home, or our workplaces where we start to settle in and start to create those same comfort zones.

This is when I often start to hear important pieces of information regarding my associates. They get comfortable at work, just like they do at home, and they start to talk. They discuss their relationships, finances, and off the record shenanigans.

It has been more than once that I have opened up employee theft investigations based off of information spilled in the comforts of the employee break room. Sadly, some of those suspicions were substantiated.

I don’t always get to see the full extent of the background checks that were run before they were hired on to the company. I do get to see them after the case is starting to come to a close.

Because we don’t hire background check experts to review the background checks, some of the potential red flags that I do see had gone unnoticed.

Maybe the background check experts would have caught onto a detail we overlooked, and would have prevented us from hiring that person who ended u stealing from us.

Everybody Knows em’

If you are looking for ways to upgrade your stores retail security with anti theft devices, EAS labels and tags are one of the most common ways to go.  One of the reasons why they are such a common tactic is, simply put, because they work. Tags and labels are known throughout the retail community. Both thieves and customers are aware of them and are conscious about having them deactivated.

It really isn’t necessary to reinvent the wheel when it comes to retail security. By using tried and true methods, it saves you countless hours of frustration. You don’t have to be the one to use trial and error to see what works. Someone else has already done that for you.

You don’t have to be the one to send the message that you use anti shoplifting tactics. The EAS tags and labels do that for you. It is statistically proven that using EAS tags and labels reduce your shrink incurred. Both items and dollars can see a significant reduction in losses. Why would you look elsewhere for a solution for your retail security program? Stick with what you and everyone else know: EAS tags and labels work.

Why you should use Anti-Theft Devices…

We all know retail security is a tough and necessary game.  There are so many different factors in performing the job that it can seem daunting at times.  What makes it worse however, is that even after you have taken every possible anti-shoplifting precaution or have access to, and use, every anti-theft device on the planet, somehow there is someone out there who will still steal from you. The truth of the matter is,  It doesn’t matter HOW they do it or even WHY they do it, they just do it and that’s all we need to concern ourselves with.  That is why when we get beat (and don’t say you haven’t because we know that’s a lie) we need to learn what our weakness was and adapt to compensate for it.

An example would be a recent endeavor to stop a series of snatch and grab thefts occurring in our high-end children’s clothing area, which is unfortunately positioned within twenty feet of a main exit.  It took two hits to that area before we realized what was happening and required installing and affixing more anti-theft devices.  When that didn’t work we installed a brand new camera to catch him in the act.  That failed too.  He was too quick and there wasn’t enough time to spot him and apprehend him.

The solution, move this target section to the far end of the second floor.

When it comes to retail security you just need to think outside the box to succeed.

How does a thing like that get started?

When I was first starting out in the loss prevention/ asset protection field I was fascinated by employee theft investigations. More specifically, the investigative process fascinated me.

I would hear all of these stories about cases of employee theft and I would wonder, “How do they get the employee theft investigation started in the first place?”

Now, I know that a lot of investigators and agents would like you to believe that all they had to do was peer into a magic 8 ball to get all of the answers, but after working in the industry for many years, I know better.

One of the best ways to start an employee theft investigation is through employee tips. Even though nobody wants to be the store “rat”, there are still many honest people who want to stand up against a wrongdoing.

The best way to get tips is to be reliable, considerate and above reproach at all times. You have to have the trust and respect of your store before they will trust you with information.

Sometimes you can rely on theft good ol’ instinct to point you in the direction of employee theft. Remember, if for some reason you think something stinks, chances are it probably is rotten.

Lastly, it never hurts to trip over a case of employee theft by being in the right place at the right time. I did that once. Literally. I was walking around a corner and I tripped over an employee who happened to be walking a contractor out the door with product he never paid for. Nasty bit of a shock for both of us, I might say!
