Affordable Retail Security is out there!

The fact is retail security is now more cost effective than ever.  Think about this:  When do you every buy name brand chargers or accessories for your phone or other electronic devices anymore?  The answer for most is never.  You can go online and find hundreds of options that work just as well for much less than the OEM prices.  The same principle applies to retail security items like retail anti-theft devices.

Can you spend a lot of money on name brand EAS labels and tags?  Of course you can.  Is it always necessary?  Not really.  There are options now for cheap labels and cheap tags that still get the job done.  As long as a product is quality and works then the name really doesn’t matter.  I guarantee shoplifters don’t stop to check the brand name on an anti-shoplifting tag.  All they care about is discovering if an item is protected or not.  If it has retail anti-theft devices (even cheap labels and cheap tags) then they are much more likely to leave the product alone and steal elsewhere. Don’t get caught unprotected because you can’t afford the name-brand retail security items.  Find a less expensive alternative and take the first step in fighting back against retail crime.

Nano Gates are no good without the right tags!

The other day I was in a store in a different part of the district that had not reported any tagging audits in over four months.  It just so happened that at that same point in history that store’s Loss Prevention department had been dissolved due to budget cuts, leaving all Loss Prevention duties in the hands of the store manager and his assistant managers.  Unfortunately they weren’t all that knowledgeable, or properly trained when it came to enforcing and adhering to LP practices.

I was there with a team of other LP associates to perform a sweep of the property and find everything that was being done incorrectly so that it could be corrected and to simultaneously instruct store management as to how to perform their required duties.  While there were a few major issues, such as no employee bag checks or failure to review CCTV footage, the biggest issue was found in the realm of what I was assigned to look for.

There wasn’t a single retail anti-theft device in place, anywhere.  Not a one 2 Alarm or 3 Alarm tag was being used.  Not even a Spider Wrap haphazardly attached to a bulk item.

 We were stunned.

This was a store that had a fully functional Nano Gate system at all of the entrances, but that was of course useless without any retail anti-theft devices to set it off.  When asked how they expected the Nano Gates to function, the store manager thought that all products arrived in store with security devices hidden inside them.

The good thing about missed tags…

It’s not an ideal situation, but you’ve got to be kidding yourself if you don’t admit that the occasional security tag on clothes is missed. While we try hard to ensure total accuracy, it can be difficult to be 100% all the time. Fear not, there is a bright side to this situation. Recently while watching cameras in my store I observed a subject with a large bag browsing the denim. What tipped me off that this subject was suspicious was that the subject wasn’t just browsing for the right size or color; they were looking for the pairs that didn’t have checkpoint tags attached. After further observation I observed the subject concealing the merchandise and I was able to apprehend and recover it.

Checkpoint tags are not easy to defeat by the average shoplifter. However everybody knows that as our technology in clothing security advances, so does the professional shoplifter. Yet again, there is a bright side! A few weeks ago two individuals came into my store with bags from another retailer. The subjects began grabbing a large amount of merchandise very quickly and we barely had a chance to clear the fitting rooms before they got in. There was no time to get a detailed list of what they grabbed and they paid no attention to whether of not the merchandise had clothing security tags on it. They must have known a way to remove the tags so that they didn’t set off the clothing alarm at the exit. All we knew was that they went in with about 30 items. When they came out it was tough to know for certain, but their bags seemed a bit larger. We rushed to the fitting room to find it a mess with about half the stuff they went in with. The biggest sign we had to know that they had stolen was the pile of about 10 clothing security tags hidden under some of the merchandise. After apprehending the subjects we were able to recover our merchandise and identify professional shoplifters that had been terrorizing the area for some time.

The ideal situation is for clothing security to protect our merchandise from theft every time. But the bottom line is that everything can be defeated, and the key is to use the flaws of security tags on clothes to your benefit.

Customer service should be part of your hiring process through Background Checks

Customer service has become the most important factor in the business decisions that we make today. From our policies and procedures to how we staff our buildings, the customer comes first. In a tough economy, this becomes even more important.

When a customer walks into the building they expect that we have hired the right people and completed thorough pre-employment screening of our employees. They expect that they are coming to a place where they can trust our employees and believe what we tell them because we are a business of integrity. If we do not complete criminal background checks of all our employees, we are opening up the door for this image to be tarnished. Most of all we want our customers to feel safe. Hiring a background check company gives us the confidence to know that our employees have never been convicted of a violent crime.

Background checks ensure we have the right people in place to serve our customers. Employee background checks make me comfortable that my employees are going to be honest with the customer and do their best to get the customer what they need. When I hire background check experts to conduct pre-employment screening it reassures me that I have made the right hiring decision, and that my employees are going to act with integrity.

For the security of my business and the safety of my customers and employees, I owe it to them and myself to conduct employee background checks on all of my new hires.

It’s all about being aware!

Shrink, or inventory losses, is not just about stopping shoplifters using elaborate schemes and tactics. It isn’t even about expensive retail security programs. It’s really about awareness!

. Are you aware of what your top merchandise losses are? If you can’t rattle off a list of your top five or ten items, how will you ever stop the shrink from happening? Are your associates equally aware? They should be. Not only are they an extra set of eyes to alert you to potential issues, but they will have a better sense of ownership if they are involved as a solution to the problem.

Do you have retail anti-theft devices in use? There are reputable companies that do make affordable, cheap labels and cheap tags to use as deterrents in your stores. Make sure your associates are aware of how to properly respond to your EAS system going off. That awareness will help you reduce your shrink by sending a clear message to the criminal community that you and your associates are now aware.

Don’t cut Payroll, Cut Shrink instead!

It has long been said that payroll is the most controllable expense a store has. You have control over the wages spent, the hours worked, allowable overtime, and can increase and reduce as needed. Sounds sensible right?

Well, I would have to disagree. When companies are reducing their work force to bare bones standards, some retailers are dangerously only having one employee in a store at any given point in time. I think that is just setting someone up to be hurt, or worse.

Instead of cutting payroll, try cutting out your shrink. It is easier than you might think. Using cost efficient cheap labels and cheap tags for your retail security needs is almost guaranteed to reduce your inventory losses. Retail anti-theft devices are notoriously effective deterrents against theft.

Since most stores do not have any way to financially allow for an inventory loss, that dollar comes right off the bottom line. A significant reduction in shrink can make a huge impact in bringing those bottom line profits back up to par.

Don’t put your store and your employees at risk by reducing your payroll to the point where it is almost nonexistent. Reduce your shrink instead through retail security and retail anti-theft devices.

Internal theft Investigations in the Real World

An employee theft investigation is a situation most business owners and managers are uncomfortable with. This is understandable since this is a criminal and civil situation that the average businessperson rarely deals with. When an employee commits internal theft by stealing cash, merchandise, time or supplies they commit a clear crime.

Internal theft in the “real world” happens in every business with employees. We would like to think that the person we hired would not steal from us. But the sad fact is that many do. Internal theft also known as employee theft is often committed by some of the most “trusted” employees.  The problem is management’s definition of “trust”. Many managers and owners use personal trust in a business environment.

Business trust involves something called “trust but verify”. A good supervisor prevents employee theft and thus the need for an employee theft investigation by not simply assuming that work tasks are accomplished the way you want them. Following up on what and how an employee for instance is checking in stock keeps them on track and cuts down on mistakes and let’s the employee know you are involved. A simple audit of what the employee is doing or has done with feed back to them both positive and negative lets the employee know that any dishonest actions have a good chance of being discovered. Many times employee theft takes root when the employee feels that no one cares or knows what they do.

You can’t out-run shrink!

No matter how hard you try, I’ll bet you just can’t out run your shrink losses. Most stores think that as long as they keep exceeding their sales budgets, retail security can take a back burner.

The days of stellar positive comps are over. Expenses are being cut left and right to make up for the difference in profits. Retail security is critical to bottom line profit increases. At some point, you can only cut out so much. So where do you turn?

Retail anti-theft devices are designed to dissolve your shrink losses. If you use cheap labels and cheap tags for your go to retail anti-theft devices, you can avoid costly expenses to reduce your shrink.

Not just for anti-shoplifting needs, these labels and tags will also keep your employees in check. Most companies report that around 40% of shrink is incurred by store employees. Why wouldn’t you want to make the right cost effective decision?

Don’t keep cutting, and definitely don’t try to keep running. Put the focus back on retail security in your store.

Clothing Security designed for Coat Theft

Winter coats are expensive. Shoppers know it, retailers know it, and most of all the shoplifters know it. Because of their high cost, coats can easily become a target for retail theft. From boosters to thieves of opportunity, coats are a quick option.

I have seen many instances where shoplifters come into the store and target coats, specifically those lacking clothing security tags and a clothing alarm. By using security tags on clothes and coats you can have a huge impact on winter shrink in your store. There is a wide variety of clothing security tags available to fit your needs, and the use of a hard tag can do wonders in deterring theft.

Sometimes the simple solution of placing security tags on clothes can solve your problems; other times you need to take more drastic measures. Alpha Security CableLoks are a great clothing alarm product that I have used to effectively deter and identify theft activity in my store. These devices have provided great clothing security for high theft merchandise above and beyond that of what a hard tag can do.

Alpha Security CableLoks can provide heightened clothing security to your merchandise by not only notifying you that someone has attempted to leave your store with unpaid merchandise, but can also provide an ongoing alarm on the device to alert you to the location of the merchandise once it  has left your store.

The Alpha Security CableLoks clothing alarm is easy to install and even easier to remove with an Alpha Key. I have had great success with very little training to get my team using this product. Simply run the cable through one of the arms of the coat or other clothing item you wish to secure and clip the cable back into the unit. Unlike hard tags, this clothing security device is noninvasive and does not penetrate the merchandise in any way, which is perfect for that high dollar merchandise you want to secure.

Never assume, always do a Background Check

Most people never see what goes on behind the closed doors of prominent hotel chains. It is assumed that all business matters especially the business of employee background checks have been addressed in the most professional ways possible and that any issues one might see is a minor glitch which is handled expeditiously. Even with my background in Loss Prevention this was my mindset until I had a very good friend of mine open my eyes to the challenges his job at a very large hotel located in the center of a huge city. My friend had worked as an operations manager for a few prominent businesses in the city and was valued as a manager who could assess talent and manage a large amount of people to complete numerous tasks which led to the business running smoothly in an urban busy setting.

We were just enjoying some conversation after a delicious holiday dinner with our families when he decided to run his latest job by me along with an alarming employee issue that had been dropped in his lap. Robert, my friend, had been hired by a prominent hotel to be the Director of restaurant operations. Robert immediately went to work assessing his team’s talent and what he found was a human resource nightmare. Even though this hotel was a very large and successful it was a family owned business which placed family members in key positions without the experience or credentials to fulfill those positions. One position in particular was the VP of Human Resources. Robert could not understand why many key positions in his team were filled with people who lacked the experience to fulfill their jobs until he started reviewing the hotel’s pre-employment screening process.

The review of the pre-employment screening was the beginning of the proverbial rabbit hole. You merely filled out a basic job application and submitted a resume, one interview later you knew whether you were hired or not. There were no employee background checks of any type conducted for any position. Nobody checked references, criminal history or even Social Security validity.  At this point the horrified look on my face had Robert a bit concerned, I almost passed out when he told me they did not have a background check company on retainer.I was simply astounded that they did not conduct any type of employee background check. At this point Robert clued me into the fact that the VP of Human Resources was a member of the hotel owner’s family and did not possess the necessary skills to develop a proper human resource program, including background checks.

At this point I had to stop Robert and start educating him on the basics of employing a pre-employment screening strategy. I explained to him that if he did the homework and put together a solution that included a variety of background check experts to choose from that the VP of human resources would embrace the idea as her own. The VP wanted to do the right thing, she just did not have the experience nor the understanding to realize what needed to be done.

In the end Robert was able to sit down with several members of the owners family including the VP of Human Resources and communicate the importance of retaining a reputable background check company. The good thing was Robert came out of the meeting with his job still intact and a budget to obtain the help of background check experts. Now Robert’s welcomed challenge is to choose the best suited background check company for the hotel. As a follow up I also explained the importance of conducting criminal background checks that encompass all of the potential employees former addresses and that as a suggestion to run state wide criminal background checks to ensure all counties are covered within a state. It was one heck of a roller coaster ride for Robert but in the end he was able to bring the pre-employment screening problem to the forefront before anymore serious problems occurred.
