Why should you perform background checks?

Hiring new talent is a time consuming and trying process that takes it’s toll on  the resources of any company.  While it is a frustrating fact of doing business, it is an unfortunate requirement to ensure you obtain quality talent to add to your company.  The problem is you still cannot allow your company’s staffing needs to be figuratively blinded by glowing recommendations and ten-page resumes chocked full of exemplary qualifications.

In these dire economic times people have become desperate to find work and the unsavory practice of lying about qualifications or work history has become more commonplace than ever.  If you or your human resources department doesn’t require any sort of pre-employment screening  or employee background you may find your company hiring a virtual lemon of an employee.  Without performing an employee background check on your new receiving hire you might never know that they have never actually operated a forklift before which could lead to a potentially deadly accident and a huge liability.  If you don’t perform a pre-employment screening on that supposed cash room veteran you won’t find out that they were fired from their last job for stealing to pay for a gambling problem.

Background checks and Pre-Employment Screening can protect your company from potential problems before they start (literally).  The reason background checks were created in the first place was to ensure people are who they say they are.  As loss prevention professionals (or managers looking to protect company assets) we can use this resource to our advantage and reveal who is worth hiring and who is simply padding their resume.

It’s not luck, it’s preparation.

Have you ever heard the saying “No one is ever really lucky”? The idea is that it is only a matter of preparation meeting opportunity. It is a way to say that hard work, and perseverance really make the difference. No one gets lucky. No one wins without the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to make them winners.

Retail security is the same way. No one gets to be “lucky” and have low shrink numbers. Just like no one gets to have good sales because they are lucky. Sales come from proper merchandising, proper on hands, and a knowledgeable and friendly sales staff.

To have low shrink, you need to be diligent in providing customer service to anyone in your stores. It is also helpful to have the right tools and resources to do your job properly. That’s where retail security anti-theft devices come into play. They can help you be anti-shoplifting. Cheap labels and cheap tags provide the necessary protection up front to prevent shoplifting.

You would no longer need to feel that you were lucky someone didn’t steal from you. You can be confident that your preparation reduced your shink.

Don’t hold back when dealing with employee theft

I have found this issue a lot lately and it has caused me a great deal of concern; loss prevention agents not fully prosecuting those found guilty at the end of an Employee theft investigation.  It is a problem that has created something of an unhealthy precedent in a few of my stores; employees see no consequences for being caught committing employee theft. Just as with any type of crime, if there is no solid punishment for those caught then there are no real consequences.

Some may say that obviously if someone is guilty of internal theft they will lose their job and that is consequence enough but you have to consider this point: if someone is stealing from the company they work for do you honestly think they care about their job in the first place?  The answer is most undoubtedly ‘no’.

Every time I have finished out an employee theft investigation and the interrogation has come to a head, that point where the guilty either break down completely or spew profanities and hate there is always a good eighty percent chance I will hear the words ‘I don’t need this ******** job anyway’ or some variation.

Make sure that when looking for internal theft, once you have a solid lead and the evidence is there to take down a suspect, that you don’t hold back.  Every time you can say, without doubt, that an employee is stealing you use the situation as an example to others that they won’t only lose their jobs but also suffer civil loss and even an arrest or jail time (if your jurisdiction and the crime provides for such things).

Sometimes, Less really is More!

Famed architect and designer Ludwig Meis van der Rohe once said less is more. He was more right than he probably realized, especially when it comes to retail security measures.

Some people are under the assumption that in order to get the best, you have to spend more. The reality is, just because you are spending less, doesn’t mean you are getting less.

In the case of using cheap labels and cheap tags for your anti-shoplifting needs, spending less actually gives you more; more money to spend elsewhere and more peace of mind knowing that you are protecting your assets from theft. Don’t forget, you are helping keep more money in American business by buying these labels and tags which are manufactured here in America.

You will be getting so much more bang for your buck than if you went with a name brand EAS tag or EAS labels for your store’s security program. Cheap, reliable, and effective is hard to argue with.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that more is always more. This is one simple situation that proves less really is more.

Are your Keys Safe?

Every type of security device is removed in one of two methods: the legitimate way using a corresponding removal key, and the illegitimate way which usually involves a pair of pliers or bolt-cutters.  Savvy shoplifters know how to identify the legitimate tools and always look for opportunities to get their hands on them.

I’ve seen some companies secure the tools right to the cash wrap and others require their employees to carry them on their person or stash them in a register.  For stores using Spider Wraps, 3 Alarm, or 2 Alarm retail anti theft devices only the last two methods are plausible as it would prove impossible to remove a Spider Wrap with a tool that was welded to a counter.  In my experience, the best way to ensure the convenient removal of your Spider Wraps is to make it impossible for your tools to wander.  Obviously there is no sure-fire practice as every store operates differently, but I am basing my suggestion on a fairly ‘textbook’ store setup.

In most stores there is usually a space (or cubby-hole if you prefer) somewhere directly beneath or nearby the register.  Installing a small storage space, similar to a hide-a-key on the underside of the space provides you with a discreet area to protect your removal tools from sticky fingers while also keeping them in an area your employees will remember since it will be so unique.

Sometimes standard backgrounds just aren’t enough…

While performing backgrounds checks and pre-employment are essential to weeding out undesirables from the truly sought-after talent, it isn’t the most sure-fire method to spotting troublemakers before you hire them.

Sometimes, in spite of all your precautions and preparations someone comes along and fools your rigorous application process and gains access to your company’s assets.  That is why on top of going through with the battery of pre-employment screenings and background checks you have to keep a closer eye on your team.

As an example, my store hired someone to fill a low-level supervisor position just before Thanksgiving.  This girl had all the right references, a solid work history, and passed the company’s employee background check without a hitch.  For quite some time she was the perfect example of a young, hard-working, punctual individual.  She was well liked by the cashier staff and admired by her superiors.  But there were signs that something was off about her two months ago.

It was common knowledge among the staff that she was the primary supporter of her family; her mother, her newborn siblings, and her grandmother.  She never really complained about her lot but it was understandably a hard position to be put in for someone of such a young age.  It didn’t raise suspicion about her, per say, but rather created more admiration and sympathy for her.

Then about two weeks ago she was caught buying dozens of items ranging from clothing to house wares that she had marked down to practically nothing using another associate’s login information.  It was a terminable offense, and one that could have been spotted much earlier had we taken the time to dig deeper and find out her mother’s disability payments had been reduced causing a greater financial burden on her.

Tight Budgets bringing you down?

We are all on a much tighter budget today than we were 10 years ago.  This means that we are often left without the newest and best in terms of technology and tools to do our jobs.  Retail security is one of the main areas where I have been seeing cuts.

Cuts are being made in administrative as well as anti-shoplifting technology as businesses are being forced to change their spending habits.  The main point I want to get across is that cuts don’t mean you have to do without retail security.  It just means you have to get a more cost effective alternative.

There are numerous alternatives to expensive retail anti-theft devices.  I have seen a lot of new vendors pop up over the last few years offering cheap labels and cheap tags.  They are making good money as their products are high quality, American made products, but without the fancy name.  The stores still get to have protection from theft, but they can do it without spending an arm and a leg (or even worse and go without all together).  Theft is on the rise and we still have to protect ourselves.  Don’t be afraid to seek cost cutting alternatives to your Retail Security problems.

What’s in a Name?

When I was growing up, I remember seeing generic brand items in the grocery store. They were just a white-labeled can or box with the product in big, bold black letters. It was not a very attractive package to look at. Even at a young age, I was very skeptical about how good the contents really were.

Over the years, companies have realized that if they want to sell and item, they need to have attractive packaging. Now just about every retailer from food to clothes to gadgets and gizmos has their own store branded items; their generics, if you will.

Retail security is no different from all the other markets out there. You can find generic versions of name brand retail anti-theft devices anywhere. Some are beautifully packaged, while some are still in black and white minimalism.

The key is to find cheap labels and cheap tags that are reliable. Be wary of foreign made labels and tags, as they may only look attractive on the outside. Their inner workings may end up being less than desirable.

Don’ t rely on just the name, or fancy packaging. Use a trusted source like RBC Retail Security for your EAS tags and labels.

Surprise! You’re Busted!

I have heard a lot of stories involving employee theft.  Some of them are immensely far-fetched while others are so crazy they have to be true.  This story is one of the latter.

A colleague of mine was having an issue with video games going missing in his store.  He had a camera in the area where they were kept but it was a still and had no way of being repositioned to a better locale so he tried everything from maintaining a physical LP presence there to rigging up dummy cameras to possibly scare off this mysterious thief.  His big break in the case came one night while doing a check of the stock rooms.  He found plastic wrappers and security cases for some video games stashed beneath a shelf in a stock room used for house wares.  With the new knowledge that it was a case of employee theft he now had to think of who it was and how he could catch the in the act.

Unfortunately the stock room provided no place to put a covert camera, nor did he have any solid leads as to who the culprit was.  Eventually he came up with an idea to apprehend the suspect that was so insane that he didn’t tell anyone else what method he was using.

Using a large cardboard box, one normally containing a do-it-yourself cabinet, he cut out a few discreet holes so he could sit in it and see outside it into the room around him.  He sat in the box for six shifts straight until his employee theft case came to a close when the suspect, a guy on his receiving team, showed up in the stock room, games in hand, and started opening them.  My colleague was so excited he leapt out of the box scaring the thief half to death in the process.

It may not have been the most practical employee theft investigation, but it worked.
