Safety and Pre-Employment Screening

Pre-employment screening is becoming a standard process for many businesses.  Many large corporations employ background check experts to work in teams in order to evaluate criminal background checks as well as employee background checks.

Smaller companies frequently do not have the funding for the increase in payroll required to perform this function which is almost always available to large companies.

This is where a trustworthy Background Check Company enters the picture. Background check experts skilled in performing pre-employment screening are standard with Background Check Company.

The background check experts deliver specialty services like background checks, criminal background checks, employee background checks, and other pre-employment screening services.  The execution of a comprehensive pre-employment-screening process prevents an employer from hiring a less than desirable individual at best and a thief at worst.

Insight into a potential employee’s integrity is provided with criminal background checks.  When hiring positions requiring leadership and responsibility this information is critical.  An employee background check examines the credentials and experience with objectivity.  This is especially important if the position requires a certain level of technical acumen.

Information as to the quality of employee as well as how former employers and peers view the candidate is provided by background checks. Background checks can also prevent an employer from hiring someone dishonest, under-qualified, or simply not the right fit.  Background Check Company provides all of these services for the business or individual.

Are the sounds of the Clothing Alarm haunting you?

The sound of the clothing alarm used to haunt me in my dreams for a couple of reasons. One reason was that the cashiers in my store frequently forgot to deactivate or detach clothing security tags. In reality some would forget; others claimed they knew which pieces were tagged, so they only needed to deactivate those particular items. Needless to say, clothing alarms found a way to go off at the doors almost continually throughout the day.

Another reason for my frustration was that I was new to the business and I would race to my camera system to discover who set the alarm off every single time the alarm sounded.  Even if they were already out the door, I was determined to catch the thief in the act of stealing.

I no longer feel the need to prove something to myself or to my stores. I have also learned to train my cashiers more effectively on the value of proper deactivation. I have learned how to explain all components of clothing security as well as customer service and how they are interconnected.

I also learned to emphasize how critical it is to deactivate correctly the first time because it creates so much less work for everyone in the end.

It was as much a lesson for me to learn as it was for my cashiers. Those early experiences have fueled my success throughout my career.

What is the relationship between Prom and a Jewel Lok?

Prom is a magical time in a young girls’ high school experience. The anticipation and excitement of being asked to a formal dance is pivotal in the sequence of events leading up to the big night.  The dinner and dance is a gateway into the “adult” world. There is even the glamour of riding around in a limo for some. It is truly a memorable night. Nobody could be considering talking about Prom and Retail anti-theft devices in the same sentence, right?

Unfortunately, it can also be a very expensive night. By the time you add up the shoes and hair and dress, dinner, limo, corsage, accessories… the expenditure can become equally memorable.

With all the expense and peer pressure to look one’s best, some may turn to shoplifting to supplement their pocketbook rather than forgo an added expense like accessories. Unfortunately it is not uncommon for peer pressure to seduce an impressionable teenager.

It goes without saying as a retailer that your goal must be to continually improve your store’s bottom line by implementing procedures and systems that will effectively prevent shoplifting. Utilizing the most up-to-date retail anti-theft devices must become a priority to stay ahead of the game. Using Jewel Lok for accessories will more than pay for itself in peace of mind and the bottom line when Prom season rolls around.

Our Jewel Loks, specifically designed for accessories like earrings, replace flimsy backs with embedded soft tags that can be discarded. Jewel Loks keep everything in place until purchase and make accessories practically impossible to steal.

Become proactive; use Jewel Lok to keep your accessories under the kind of lock and key that assures your inventory is well protected from the temptations that sometimes overwhelm the Prom shopper.

Are you asking the right questions as part of Pre-Employment Screening?

Getting the answers you need to hire a suitable and qualified candidate can be challenging. Standard job applications only cover the basics of the position applied for – availability, previous work history, and education.

Resumes are somewhat better, they are usually more descriptive as to what an applicant does or did at their previous places of employment; however, they can also contain a web of deceit.

Without running background checks in order to verify information, who can know if or how much embellishment is conveyed in either the job application or a resume. Background checks are also somewhat limited in what they can uncover.

Many employers, for example, will often only release the dates that an employee worked for their company. They may choose not to state the reason why the person is no longer working with the company, leaving it up to the applicant to state the reason as to why they no longer work for that company.

Because they are adept at the process of calling an applicant’s personal and professional references, the background check experts are better equipped to uncover the truth.

Did you know that references are frequently unaware that they have been listed on an application? They may also not be clear about what they should or should not say about someone, thus giving too much or too little information than they should.

The background check experts are also adept at asking non-work related questions in order to obtain the answers really needed. Do you want to know what a reference really thinks? Ask the reference if they would let the applicant house sit or baby sit for them. This question cuts to the chase and you will have your answer.

Building Blogs of an EAS Clothing Security Tags

Almost everyone has seen an EAS tag, but not everyone understands what they do or how they work. Clothing security tags, and Checkpoint tags specifically, consist of two pieces of hard plastic. One side has a steel pin attached. The other side has a tiny hole to receive the pin as it pierces through the material of a garment.

The checkpoint tags are virtually indestructible once clamped together. They require the use of a detacher to remove them. I have observed shoplifters attempting to pry them off, cut them off, and even burn the plastic off.  Few succeed and if they do manage to succeed, success is bittersweet.  Either the clothing is destroyed or the ink inside is busted in the process rendering the item useless.

The clothing security tags referred to as ink tags are hard EAS tags that contain two ampoules of dye in one of the sides. There is generally a blue dye and a glow in the dark dye that will stain whatever the inks contact.

EAS refers to electronic article surveillance. In basic terms, security tags on clothes contain an RF transmitter.  When this transmitter intersects the path of the clothing alarm – those big towers flanking the doors of a retailer – an extremely audible alarm sounds.

Security tags on clothes – also referred to as EAS tags – are used in the majority of large chain stores. It is equally advantageous for small boutiques and small box stores to utilize the EAS tags for clothing security.

What Level Is For You? – Alpha 3 Alarm

I know that there are different EAS tags and devices out there, but when I first started researching products, I didn’t know what exactly is the difference between the Alpha Security Alpha 2 Alarm and the Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices.

It didn’t take me long to realize that Alpha Security had created different levels of protection against in store theft.

The most basic level is the typical EAS system.  A product has a tag that alarms when the tag passes through the field generated by two towers at an exit door. We see this format in just about every big box retailer out there.

But what if you are trying to prevent shoplifting by more experienced shoplifters? This is where the need for Alpha 2 Alarm occurs. This device has an audible alarm that comes directly from the retail anti theft device if it is tampered with. So not only does the EAS device sound off at the door if it is not deactivated, but it also sounds if it is tampered with inside the store.

Now if you are still looking for the big daddy of alarms, use the Alpha 3 Alarm. It has the alarm capabilities of both levels one and two. But the biggest difference is that an Alpha 3 Alarm will sound if the retail anti theft device (and the product) leaves the store without being paid for. So the screech of the alarm will not stop at the doors. It wills stay with the EAS device – and more importantly the product. This makes the shoplifter even more conspicuous than what they want to be.

In a nutshell, the alarms signal the level of protection in preventing shoplifting.

Is trust alone sufficient without Pre Employment Screening?

There is always some apprehension involved when one hires an employee. One needs to know that the new hire is both honest and hardworking and that the new hire will earn your confidence as well as confirm that you made a good hiring decision. The last thing an employer wants to discover is that a new employee is utterly unlike the person he or she presented during the interview.

Completing a thorough and detailed pre-employment screening is the most effective way to ease some of this apprehension. An effective pre-employment screening must include more than simply a question and answer session. An essential ingredient in an effective screening is a skills or critical thinking test – the perfect technique to get a more conclusive perspective of the candidate’s capabilities and skill set.

The employee background check is another effective tactic. This background check should include criminal and credit checks, if applicable. It is also important to take it a step further by verifying previous employment and education listed on job applications.

While the background check company effectively runs employee background checks, it is an excellent practice for the employer to run a practical background check. Simply pick up the phone and call the references listed. It is amazing how few people actually call references given by a candidate. It is also amazing what some references actually have to say about the candidate.

Let background check company alleviate your apprehension – allow them to perform pre-employment screening and you can rest knowing whom you can better trust to hire.

Profit Killers – Internal Theft

I was taught three things cause shrink throughout my loss prevention career: internal theft, external theft, and paperwork error. The number one cause is internal theft, followed by shoplifting, then operational miscues.

Conducting an employee theft investigation is imperative to keep track of employees. These investigations take very little time to complete and are extremely beneficial in weeding out dishonest employees who are causing more harm than good to your business.

In order to prevent employee theft, store management together with loss prevention has an obligation to monitor and follow up on transactions that appear out of the ordinary. When dishonest employees are apprehended and their employment terminated, other employees take note. The end result is more employees who are disinclined to act dishonestly.

The impact is extremely powerful when an employee is considering stealing and observes a co-worker being escorted out of the store by loss prevention, or in extreme cases the police. When employees realize that their work is monitored at all times internal theft is prevented.

The worst cause of shrink is employee theft and unfortunately it does occur. However, with loss prevention initiating and concluding a proper employee theft investigation, the amount of loss is reduced and profit increases. Attending to effective loss prevention produces and maintains honest and productive employees in your business.

Road Trip – Never without Clothing Security

I just came back from a great weekend with my family. We took a road trip to visit one of the national museums that we had wanted to tour for some time. It was well worth the trip, even my toddler loved it.

We decided to take a quick swing through the gift shop on our way out after we had walked all seven floors of the museum. We observed that they had a large quantity of clothing for sale, but none of it seemed to have any clothing security tags.

It seemed quite unusual for a tourist attraction not to have any visible clothing security.  Upon closer examination, I observed clothing security in the form of soft labels imbedded into the price tags of the clothes.  Although they didn’t use clothing security tags, there was still a form of protection in place, but it wasn’t overtly obvious. I thought it was a pretty smart move.

No doubt this store has its share of shoplifters, but the number of false activations from their clothing alarm are greatly reduced because someone forgot to remove a hard tag. The soft tags are disarmed as soon as they are placed on the counters at the wrap stand.

The last thing one wants in a museum is to have a clothing alarm going off every few minutes. This individualized program for clothing security was very well designed to suit the unique needs of a specialty store.

Taking a Break During an Employee Theft Investigation

I was coordinating a large internal theft investigation case which required that several employee theft investigation interviews were taking place simultaneously due to the large number of employees being interviewed.

After having completed one of my employee theft interviews, I stepped outside to take a break.  A few minutes later I was joined by another loss prevention consultant. Tony had just interviewed an employee who admitted to theft and while he was writing out his confession, Tony decided to take a break as well.

I have more than 2,000 employee theft investigation cases under my belt and I always try to think of ways that someone may be committing employee theft . Needless to say I have trouble passing some integrity tests since I do spend a great deal of time thinking about theft. I am not making plans for myself to steal but I always wonder how other people may go about stealing.

While standing outside, I noticed some fuel pumps. The fuel pumps didn’t have a look to secure them and I also didn’t notice any log sheet where anyone would record the pumping of gas.

As my mind was honing in on how easy it would be to steal gas from pumps that are not secured and most likely not audited in any form, I asked Tony to go back inside and ask his suspect how many gallons of gas he was stealing on a regular basis.

The suspect was surprised by the question but admitted to having stolen at least 40 gallons of gas each month over the last 24 months. Guess thinking about theft had paid off again for the good guys.
