Hidden so well – Pre-Employment Screening

I will grudgingly admit that I was duped. I had an acquaintance one time that was completely different than what I had first believed her to be. It was one of the few times that I wish I could have conducted pre-employment screening for someone in my personal life.

I had made a new friend who was introduced through mutual acquaintances. She had moved several times over the years that should have been my first clue to dig a little deeper. She bounced around from laborer job to laborer job.

This should have been a red flag because these are jobs that typically do not conduct employee background checks.

She was my friend so I didn’t question it much, and neither did anyone else.

What I did start to notice was that she started to drink more and more frequently. Over the next few months, she began drinking so much that she lost her job, her car, and most of her friends. As it turned out, she had always had a drinking problem. She also had several run-ins with the law which was a direct result of the drinking.

All of which she tried to hide by moving frequently and sticking to jobs that didn’t conduct employee background checks.

The last I saw her, she was moving again to a different state. I shudder to think of the mistake her next employer will make. If her closest friends didn’t know the truth, her boss surely won’t stand a chance.

Unless it’s you – Checkpoint Security tags

Misplaced Trust – Employee Theft

I ran a store that did a thriving mail order business. It was a great way to capture sales from customers not only in the area, but also some of the tourist shoppers as well. It was a little too late when I found out that one of my employees was committing employee theft through our postal process.

The employee that was running the mail orders had quit to find a job somewhere else. He had gone out with one of my other employees and had confided in them how much product he had taken and how easy it was to get away with it.

He had been shipping orders out to his home address and to the addresses of his friends. These orders were never paid for. Because we didn’t do an audit on 100% of the packages, his internal theft was undetected.

He would hold his personal packages behind until the mailman was about to come by. Then he would slip his packages in with everything else. There was no record of the packages, and there was only a slight influx in postage.

I keep kicking myself thinking that there should have been some glaring red flag telling me that there was an issue. Unfortunately, he was smarter than I was (or my policies). It was a matter of misplaced trust. He was going to find a way to steal regardless of what I did, or what a random employee theft investigation would have shown up.

I read an article in a loss prevention trade magazine that was talking about one of the head honchos of the company Alpha Security is retiring. He was responsible for many of the new retail anti-theft devices that Alpha Security currently is using with enormous amounts of success.

This conveys that, as a company, Alpha Security values people and ideas, not just profits. It shows in their products. They are not designed to break the banks of small business owners. Once Upon A Time- Clothing Security

When I first began my retail career many years ago, I was introduced to the idea of clothing security in the shoe department. As I walked through the stock room, you could see the carnage of old clothing security tags strewn about; missing pieces, blue ink splatter on the ground. It was not a pretty sight. Even worse, the reason we were there to begin with was from the number of customer complaints because the Checkpoint tags had been put on the shoes with the bulky part on the inside. Don’t Be The One To Get Schooled – Employee Background Checks

I used to look at job applications and marvel at the lack of education for these potential candidates. I used to think that maybe it was the area, or maybe it was because of the industry. As time went on, I started to notice how many more applicants seemed to not only have better educational backgrounds but also much higher degrees than what the job would require. That’s when I started pre-employment screening through a background check company.

The news reports at the height of our recession routinely would show master’s degree job hunters looking at jobs like waiting tables and retail stockers because they had been laid off and no one was hiring. For a while I used to think that the influx of highly educated applicants was a result of these lay offs. Until I started to use a background check company to run more thorough employee background checks and conduct pre-employment screening, I realized that I was not completely accurate in my assessment.

While there are more higher education applicants looking for jobs to get back on their feet, many others realized that these educational levels were now a standard. Many applicants, to stay competitive, have started to embellish or flat out lie about a degree they hold. It might be they started the degree but never finished, or are still going to school. Some are flat out lying about a school are degree program they never enrolled in. Employee background checks will sort out the fact from fiction and keep you from getting schooled in the process.

Check that bag, and those boxes- Employee Theft

Being vigilant is a great way to prevent retail theft. Some of the biggest cases I have seen from shoplifters, to employees, and even vendors are allowed to happen because the employees of a store have gotten complacent. This Employee theft investigation was no different. Complacency toward an outside vendor proved to be just as bad as complacency toward one of our own employees.

We recently had a situation with one of our soda vendors. These are commission-based positions that are paid based off of how much product we invoice from them. If they take away bad/ old product, it is deducted from their monthly totals.

This vendor had been stealing back his own product for about five years. The store was not reconciling their invoices with each shipment, like they were supposed to, and the vendor knew it.

He would drop off and invoice for ten cases of soda. After sitting and chatting for a bit, the manager would go off to attend to other things. The vendor would then put cases back in boxes and wheel them back out.

No one ever checked his boxes and the store would be charged not only for his free soda but also his full commission. It wasn’t until the first inventory that the shortages were discovered and we suspected employee theft was the cause.

After looking at the invoices though, we realized that it might not be due to typical internal theft. It was because of the employees’ complacency to check off this well liked vendor before he left the building that the theft of merchandise was allowed to happen.

The Next Big Thing – Alpha Security

Analyze Your Reports- Clothing Security Tags

It should be no secret that you need clothing security to protect your merchandise. What you might not realize is that it is also not a secret as to which specific items need clothing security tags.

The first place is to start looking at your last inventory report. You are conducting inventories at least on a yearly basis right? If you aren’t, you need to start. How will you ever know that you have a problem if you don’t have any way to manage or quantify your inventory losses?

Taking inventory is the best way to track your inventory. You should compare the quantity of each item you purchased versus the quantity of those same items you actually have on hand. Be sure to adjust for any sales or returns made.

Whatever discrepancies you have is called shrink. Now that you know what your shrink is look at those specific items. Decide if these items are ones that are continuing to cause shrink issues? Were the losses on items that you no longer carry in your store? Clothing alarm is an excellent way to prevent these losses.

If you have inventory items that you still carry that you are noticing losses of these are the ones that need security tags on clothes. Checkpoint tags should be applied to these high shrink items first.
