Hit One Out Of The Park; Prevent Shoplifting Of Baseball Bats By Protecting Them With An O Tag
As per my usual routine I was browsing the internet today to see what criminals are up to these days. My goal was to see if there was something new and hot for thieves. From my own experience as a Loss Prevention Manager I already know that sporting goods are always a popular item for criminals. They are hard to trace, can be easily traded for drugs or sold on the internet. I have had problems with shoplifters swapping out golf clubs in boxed sets, ticket switching baseball gloves, stealing bikes and I knew that baseball bats could be a potential problem but I dealt with one case of it. A shoplifter put one down the front of his pants and tried to walk out of the store (hobble out was more like it). At the time I did not have many options to prevent shoplifting of baseball bats other than lock them up which was not an option at all. Electronic article surveillance soft tags were the only retail anti-theft devices we had to use.  Well apparently there is a lot more bat theft that goes on than I knew after my search of the internet. Here are a few examples:
From abc30  Feb. 7, 2015 – Clovis police were looking for two grand theft suspects who had stolen about $1400 worth of baseball bats from a sporting goods store.
From NJ .com, Apr., 6, 2015 – A couple was charged with stealing nearly $3,000 worth of high-end baseball bats from a sporting goods store in Mount Laurel, N.J.
My Coast Now reported on May 5, 2017 that thieves broke into a Nanaimo, British Columbia store and stole at least 6 rare bats and 3 Louisville Slugger bats in addition to 12 pair of football receiver gloves. http://www.mycoastnow.com/30809/unique-baseball-bats-stolen/
AlbuquerqueJournal reported on April 24, 2015, that a man stole 2 baseball bats worth $300 each from a sporting goods and batting cage store.
While there is more theft than I thought there is also another device to prevent shoplifting and that is the O Tag from Alpha Security.
The O Tag is a superior choice for protecting baseball bats because they are designed specifically to fit around the handle end of the bat shaft. Since it is designed and built by Alpha High Theft Solutions it has built in electronic article surveillance technology that works in conjunction with EAS towers from Checkpoint. The O Tag sends out radio frequency waves that can be detected by the towers when the tagged merchandise is carried to close to the doors where the towers are located. When the detection takes place a 95 decibel alarm sounds and warning lights in the towers flash. This alerts store associates to go to the doors, conduct a receipt check and recover merchandise that has not been paid for yet.
While retail anti-theft devices on the baseball bats does prevent a theft, it is also effective in deterring one since the shoplifters often choose to avoid the risk of walking out with tagged products. Preventing a theft is great but deterring the would-be thief from even considering stealing from your store is better. The knowledge that a store tags ALL of their merchandise sends the shoplifters to other locations. No, we don’t want them to steal, ever, but if other store owners choose not to protect their goods with retail anti-theft devices that becomes their issue. If you are investing in it you will reap ALL of the benefits that result from your foresight.
Use an O Tag on all of your baseball bats and you will improve your instock percentages and that in turn will result in increased sales and profits. Shrinkage, empty fixtures from theft and decreased profits all fit together. The converse is true also, use the O Tag, prevent shoplifting and watch profits rise.
The O Tag is important and we can help you with it. Call 1.770.426.0547 and let’s talk.

BOOSTERS LEAVE BUSINESS EMPTY HANDED, AFTER ATTEMPTING TO STEAL MERCHANDISE EQUIPPED WITH CLOTHING SECURITY TAGS!

Clothing Security Tags deter boosters from stealing your assets on a daily basis. As a Loss Prevention Manager, I often find empty packaging or tags in my store. This helps my store track theft trends, in order to see what security devices to use. You gain extensive knowledge based on your own personal experiences with the devices. You learn by experimenting with different styles, finding out what actually stops merchandise from leaving the building. My store invests in security tags on clothes, in order to reduce their amount of loss each year. This sends boosters to your competitors, keeping your merchandise on your shelves to sell! Why not invest your money on what has been proven to stop shoplifting in other retailers?!

It’s 7:00pm on a Friday, and the store is only an hour away from closing. The store team is busy getting the store ready for the next day, while I am scanning the cameras looking for shoplifters before we close. It may not look busy to the associates, but I see something on camera that catches my eye. I see 3 subjects scoping the store suspiciously for cameras. I keep CCTV on the subjects, due to their odd behavior. Within minutes of seeing their behavior, all 3 subjects walk into our men’s department, right into our popular sportswear section. I keep a close eye on the subjects, due to this department increasing in known theft the last few months. Just 3 weeks prior, I had the store team place Clothing Security Tags on this entire fixture because of the current theft issues. The subjects walk up to one of our high dollar fixtures, which are loaded with several of our popular brands.  Subject 1, quickly pulls out 2 large, empty shopping bags out of their pant pocket. Subject 2 & 3 began rapidly stuffing half of the fixture of clothing into the empty bags, while Subject 1 holds the bags open! While concealing, the Subjects stop as if something is wrong. I see on camera, one of the Subjects show the others the Clothing Security Tags!  They start panicking and remove all of the concealed product out of the shopping bags. Next, all of the Subjects try to break the tags off of the clothing, but fail miserably! On camera, I can see the frustration on their faces as they try to figure out a new plan. They end up dropping the clothing on the floor, and leave out of our exit doors with just their empty bags. They left my store and never came back. After totaling how much these boosters would have left my store with, if I did not have the security devices present: a grand total of $2,181.78! Within minutes it went from over $2,000 going right out the door, to the boosters leaving immediately with NOTHING. However, think about how many times per week this happens when I am not there to observe? My store could not stand to see any more known loss out of the men’s sportswear section, leading us to take action by placing security tags on clothes. It is such a small task, for such a big win. In this day and age, it is not realistic for associate awareness on the sales floor to be enough in deterring the thieves. Retailers have to use more advanced protection devices that really deters the thieves from coming into the store. The shoplifters will purposely wait till associates are busy with customers and use that perfect opportunity to steal when no one is around. Associates cannot observe everything that is going on. Even a Loss Prevention team cannot observe everything that is going on. So what are you going to do to stop the theft madness?!
In my several years of being a Loss Prevention Manager, I see a massive amount of these same incidents happening on camera due to security tags on clothes. The shoplifters panicking, after seeing what devices we use. Clothing Security Tags should be required in every retailer to deter daily theft walk outs. This is the route to go, if you are looking for an inexpensive fix that truly deters.

  Alpha Hang Tag- 3
Shrinkage takes a massive bite out of your stores bottom line.  Shoplifters are one of the highest contributors to shrinkage for the retail industry.  Retailers have a myriad of ways to protect their assets from thieves. We have to think smarter than the thief and stay one step ahead of them at every turn to prevent shoplifting.  We accomplish this goal by using the most advanced security devices available and embracing new technology. Most stores will place spider wraps and large tags on their products for theft prevention. That is an excellent deterrent for boxed items and clothing, but what about our clamshell packaged merchandise?  In the stores that I have worked Loss Prevention for, we can easily have over 50 percent of our products hanging on a peg hook.   With such a large quantity, why wouldn’t you protect that product as well? Many stores are forgetting about those areas, which leads to a trending high amount of loss each year.

In one of my stores, my expert Loss Prevention team apprehended 132 shoplifters in 1 year.  60% of those shoplifting cases had product that was selected from peg hooks versus off fixtures.  I would place the merchandise on a locking peg hook thinking it was protected and that the merchandise could not be removed unless an associate unlocked the peg.  However, it never failed that a thief would come through with a knife and cut the top of the plastic off.  This was so they could get the product off of the locking peg and steal it easily.  I watched one morning via CCTV, a shoplifter come through an aisle of high dollar product on pegs. I noticed the subject quickly pulling an item out of his pocket. I saw on camera that he pulled out his own box cutter, and then cut a whole row of product off. After getting the merchandise off, he concealed it all into an empty shopping bag! After concealing, he had a get away driver waiting and fled the scene. It all happened extremely fast. Not only did he get away with 10 expensive items, but it could have been a harmful situation for associates. We had to change the culture! We had to put a stop to the thieves from coming in, using knives/box cutters to steal items regularly. After figuring out where the issue was, I was able to get approval to order the Alpha Hang Tag. I had no idea these existed in the Loss Prevention world. I received a shipment in and place them on our highest theft products to prevent shoplifting in that area. I would complete counts daily to track if the Alpha Hang Tag was truly working. After 4 weeks of usage and tracking, I found 0 product was cut off by thieves. The only product that was missing, was the product that was sold to customers. This was a huge win for my store!

After noting the success rate, I was able to obtain approval to order more and place it on other products as well. The feedback I received from associates was likewise positive. The Alpha Hang Tag is extremely small, so it is very customer friendly. It is also easy to put on, so it does not take inordinate amounts of time for the associates to put on before putting the merchandise on the sales floor. The best part for the store was not finding tons of empty packaging daily any longer, knowing that we were able to prevent shoplifting!

LOSE LESS BY UTILIZING CHECKPOINT HARD TAGS IN YOUR BUSINESS NOW!

 Stop Shoplifting – 3

Lose less to sell more! What are you doing to ensure merchandise is not walking out of your business daily? A lot of businesses do not realize how many thieves are shoplifting, right under their noses each day.  Checkpoint Hard Tags will keep the shoplifters from stealing from your store, sending them to your competitors that don’t invest in the most cutting edge technology out there.
When I am hired as a Loss Prevention Manager for a new store, I usually hear, “There is not a lot of theft that goes on here”. It never fails that I start watching CCTV each day, and apprehend several shoplifters each week. The store management team then is amazed by the amount of theft they had no idea was occurring so often. Sometimes it takes a trained eye to be able to shed light to these type of issues. For business owners, Checkpoint Hard Tags will stop shoplifting so you won’t have to preside over a decline in your store. It’s the perfect way to protect your assets and take care of your shoppers and focus on sales!   I started at a new location a few years back, and they had no Checkpoint Hard Tags on any of their high dollar merchandise. The retailer sold jeans, jackets, pants, suit, shirts, and sweaters. A majority of the product, was at a price point over $79.99 per unit. The store had a shrink percent at 1.07, which had jumped from just a 0.45 the prior year. Of course I hear, “I really don’t think we have a theft problem”. The store never updated any of their merchandise protection standards because they thought they would see a massive amount of people running straight out the exit doors. I explained that 75 percent of the shoplifters conceal in the fitting room, and many do not leave tags or other evidence behind. Without protective devices, how do you know your assets are not going out the door this way?! If you are not finding tags and can’t monitor every item people are selecting, then you really have no idea how much theft is happening. I pulled the store’s shrink numbers by department and found that their top 3 shrink consisted of junior’s jeans, men’s sportswear, and woman’s jackets. I started doing daily counts on these items and found exactly what I already knew. Those items were not just being sold, and we had several missing from theft. I then showed the information I tracked to the management staff. We then expedited an order of Checkpoint Hard Tags. Once we received and distributed them to the high loss items, I continued to monitor the clothing items over the next 3 weeks. We went from missing a massive amount, to missing only 1! I was able to earn trust from the store, proving that they keep merchandise on the shelf and finally stop shoplifting! The store manager had us order more and place them on all high dollar items throughout the entire store. This was now a norm, and everyone was on the same page. Checkpoint Hard Tags are inexpensive enough to not affect sales, and they are reusable, which is great for budget purposes. The following year the store came in at a 0.39 percent shrink, which is a big improvement over the prior years!
Don’t waste time, hoping to stop shoplifting without merchandise protection that truly works in retailers. It will only get worse, and we have to make a change in order to decrease shrinkage in our stores. Lose less so you can sell more.

RETAILERS COMBAT THEIR THEFT PROBLEM WITH THE HIGHEST QUALITY CLOTHING SECURITY TAGS!

RETAILERS COMBAT THEIR THEFT PROBLEM WITH THE HIGHEST QUALITY CLOTHING SECURITY TAGS!
Clothing Security Tags-4                                                                ML Blog 09
  Clothing Alarm-3
Shoplifting is a huge problem for business owners. Retailers lose billions of dollars each year, due to exorbitant expanses of theft. But what are they doing to protect themselves? Stores attempt a myriad of solutions to combat the reoccurring problem. However, this issue is colossal and is increasing every day. Most of the retailers I have had the privilege to work with use some form of theft deterrent. Some retailers utilize public view monitors or even visual signs, stating “shoplifters will be prosecuted”. You will see these emblems in fitting rooms or at store entrances. Signs help and monitors, but are not merchandise protection devices. They can make a thief think or plan better strategy, but they do little to prevent a truly resourceful culprit.  They alone are not enough to reduce annual shrink totals, so we now have to expand our programs to protect our assets. Retailers need security devices that are shoplifter proof, keeping your merchandise on the shelf. Luckily, now you can use clothing security tags to secure your assets from boosters wiping out your store.

You name it; I have seen it. Throughout my several years of experience in Loss Prevention, clothing security tags have been particularly successful. In 2015, I apprehended a grand total of eighty-three shoplifters in one year at my particular store.  Ninety percent of the pilferers intentionally stole products that were not tagged with a clothing alarm. I would watch via CCTV the shoplifters look through the racks and flip through the clothes, hoping to find one without a security device. After not being able to find a non-tagged item, they leave the store and do not come back! This keeps the shoplifters away from your business and sends them to other retailers that do not have their items protected. The trend shows what really works. Each year since 2015, I notice the same type of pattern. The shoplifters are too nervous to steal product with a clothing alarm because they know it will alarm at the door, bringing all eyes on them. That is the last thing a shoplifter wants as they always avoid associates and scope for areas of less traffic. If the thieves try to remove the clothing security tags, it can be very difficult. In my previous stores, I have experimented with these tags and devices to test the removal of them. I’ve learned that even with tools, it is a time consuming and noisy undertaking.  When you walk into other retailers, you will notice a majority of them utilize them as well. It is extremely uncommon for a retailer to not use tags now, simply because these stores have seen the importance of keeping a security tag program in place. It makes a huge difference when you look at your current shrink numbers, versus the numbers from prior years of not utilizing them.
The stores who implement this as a mandatory program see it works, and continue the program each year. My stores managers also like that are recyclable, making it an inexpensive and convenient fix for a gigantic problem. You place the clothing alarm right on the product, which takes no time. With how hard you work for sales, we can’t allow tons of product to be in the hands of thieves. I order clothing security tags anytime I work Loss Prevention at a new location, because I know the benefit of having these on my clothing items or accessories. Protect your valuable merchandise by saying NO to thieves with this easy fix!

Jewelry Hijinks Might Have Been Prevented If Alpha Jewel Locks Had Been Around; How I Was Outwitted By A Slick Senior

Retail Anti-Theft Devices-3
Jewelry Hijinks Might Have Been Prevented If Alpha Jewel Locks Had Been Around; How I Was Outwitted By A Slick Senior
Loss Prevention personnel see a lot of strange things get stolen. Sometimes we catch the bad guys and sometimes they get one over on us. During the course of my years in the field I encountered all kinds of strange things. I had an employee I caught who stole pairs of socks along with other clothing and I caught a golfer with $300 in his wallet stealing a couple of packages of underwear but one of the oddest shoplifting stories was one about a shoplifter who actually got away. The shoplifter was an older woman, probably in her 70’s shopping in our jewelry department. Our store didn’t lock up all of our jewelry in display cases or in counter top displays. Some merchandise was out for open sale. Our retail anti-theft devices were limited to electronic article surveillance tags (EAS) tags on the backers of some items such as rings and earrings, but not all. While it would have behooved us to have Alpha Jewel Loks available to secure the smaller pieces like bracelets and earrings, they had not been developed at that time. I will get back to the story of the sticky-fingered slickster in a moment. First I need to discuss exactly what an Alpha Jewel Lok is so I don’t leave anyone scratching their head.
Alpha makes all types of retail anti-theft devices but the only one they have that is small enough to offer EAS protection to items as small as a bracelet or small pair of hoop earrings is the Alpha Jewel Lok. This tag has a small, steel hook that locks closed in a solid housing unit with EAS technology built into it. The hook can secure clasps together, earrings or be clipped through a watch band. While you may be thinking that something this small could be broken by a thief, it is strong enough that the jewelry will break before the lock does. Shoplifters aren’t looking for broken merchandise as that defeats their purpose. The EAS portion that interacts with the alarm towers at the doors deters potential thieves who want to avoid alarm systems.
As I was saying, this older woman was spending a lot of time around the costume jewelry counter looking at what I call the lower end jewelry. Some of it was gold plated or silver plated and could run up to around $50 a piece but generally no more than that. I caught myself watching her because she was in a high theft area but I then moved the camera to something else. I chided myself thinking, “What is this little old lady going to do?” As the customer continued to take her time picking up earrings, removing them from the backings, trying them on and then putting them back I couldn’t shake the feeling something wasn’t right. She was taking a long time trying the merchandise on, looking in a mirror and viewing herself. Part of me excused the behavior thinking that she was just a lonely woman with nowhere else to go and nothing to do. The longer she lingered the more suspicious I became and zoomed my camera in but still I saw nothing that looked like theft. The only thing that really stood out as suspicious was that she was looking only at pierced earrings and trying them on and taking them off. She didn’t look at any other types of jewelry.
After more than an hour of trying on earrings the sinister seventy-something went on her merry way. I knew something just did not feel right but she was gone and I was going to figure out what she did. I went to the counter and started looking at the earrings, especially a couple pair I could be sure she had tried on. As I looked at the earrings I noticed something, every pair was some type of gold. Then I noticed it, the earring backers that keep the earrings from falling out when worn were all plastic or silver. The greedy granny had stolen the gold earring backs from a LOT of our earrings. I don’t recall how many, but it was a significant number. To this day it remains a bit of a sore spot that she got one over on me.
There are a lot of odd things that get stolen and just when you think you’ve seen it all, some new twist or turn happens that you never expected. Using Alpha Jewel Loks and other retail anti-theft devices on as many items as possible can minimize the amount of theft your store will experience and save you money. Just don’t let anything surprise you if it isn’t secured or locked up.

USE MORE THAN CHECKPOINT SYSTEMS TO SPOT A SHOPLIFTER – PT 3

USE MORE THAN CHECKPOINT SYSTEMS TO SPOT A SHOPLIFTER – PT 3
Ah, the final stretch. I sure hope you’ve enjoyed, and more importantly, learned something from my little mini-series on how to spot a thief in your crowds of customers. We’ll round things out with another 5 tips on how to spot a criminal and to ultimately Stop Shoplifting altogether. So, here’s some more behavioral indicators to look for in your stores.
#11. Draping clothes around a shopping basket
This is another one of those things that I’ve seen hundreds of times. A shoplifter will take several layers of clothing and drape them around the shopping cart, to prevent seeing into the cart. At the bottom of the cart, will be a purse, or bag and it’s here that they conceal product, making it difficult for you to see what they are doing. Anytime I see a shopper doing this, I immediately head over and begin making small talk about this week’s deals, or making comments on their selection of product. This will most often discourage their actions and save you some shrink.
#12. Asking dumb questions
Yes, contrary to what you were taught in school, there are in fact dumb questions. I’ve found that if you happen to startle a would-be shoplifter as they are concealing, or prepping to do so (whether intentional, or not) they often ask some really silly questions. I once turned the corner as this guy was about to conceal some pants, and he began asking me about home insurance policies. I’ve even had a guy ask me if our Checkpoint Tags were tracked by satellites. Granted, sometimes, you just have crazies that shop in the store, but distracting questions, overly odd questions and distracting behaviors could be a strong indicator of a potential thief.
#13. Wearing old and dirty shoes
This one is for all of you footwear retailers out there. If you notice a shopper come in the store with 1. No shoes or 2. Old dirty and worn out shoe, there’s a high chance they’re going to try and pull the old swithceroo. You know, where they leave you their nasty old shoes and leave with new ones, conveniently passing the cash registers. Sometimes, they don’t give two shakes if the shoes have Checkpoint Tags or not, since they’re running as soon as they hit the door. The best thing to do if you observe this is to provide the very best customer service possible. Don’t let them have a chance to swap the shoes.
#14. Bringing in bags from other retailers
Now, if you’re in a mall, this probably doesn’t apply to you. If you’re a stand-alone store, this is odd. If you’re going to Stop Shoplifting, your team has to be observant of this indicator, I’ve seen folks pull into my parking lot (stand-alone store), open their trunk and pull several (full) bags from other retailers from the trunk and then come into my store with them. Before long, they were slipping some of my product into their bags. Train your team to recognize this as a potential indicator and offer to hold the bags at the service desk, or create a policy that discourages shoppers from doing this.
#15. Getting angry at service levels
They’re not angry that there is no service, they’re angry because they’re TOO MUCH service. This is my absolute favorite indicator. Literally no honest shopper is going to turn away good customer service. I’ve had would-be shoplifter’s file corporate complaints against me because I gave them “too much” customer service. Usually, the DM and store manager thank me. 😊 If you have a customer that just gets madder than an old red hen about customer service, well, I suggest that you give them a little more. Chances are they want to be alone to steal from you!
I really hope you’ve learned something from these few tips. Often, we rely on fancy gadgets, technology and our Checkpoint Tags to identify criminals, when in reality, you can just look for a handful of behavioral indicators. While each of the previous 15 tips can help you to Stop Shoplifting, you should also understand that legitimate and honest customers can and do exhibit these same behaviors. Always use these tips as a guide and remember, providing great customer service will always win you praise from your shoppers and will make you a repellent for shoplifters.

Retail Anti-Theft Devices Could Have Prevented A Shoplifter From Biting Off More Than He Could Chew

Retail Anti-Theft Devices Could Have Prevented A Shoplifter From Biting Off More Than He Could Chew
Being a Loss Prevention Manager doesn’t mean you are always at work when the interesting shopliftings occur.  Sometimes it’s your team that has to deal with the difficult situations such as the one that took place one afternoon at the store where I worked.  Two of my team members were working this particular day when they began watching a suspect in the shoe department.  The suspect in this case began trying on men’s work boots.  We had no retail anti-theft devices on our shoes or boots such as an Alpha Ink Tag to deter theft.  The subject in this case found a pair of boots, put them on and walked to the front of the store and watched the door.  When he felt it was safe, he walked to the exit and as he started to leave, my two Loss Prevention Officers stopped him and brought him back in the store.  As they neared the security office the subject turned to run and the officers grabbed him.  The suspect then bit one of the officers and tried to throw a punch at him.  Fortunately for the suspect the officers showed a bit of restraint and while he ended up with a bump on his head he was no worse for wear, aside from a ripped t-shirt.  The officers called for local police and then notified me of the incident.  Of course my concern was for my Loss Prevention Officer who had been bitten.  I was also curious why the suspect had fought so hard over a pair of boots.  It turned out the suspect had an extensive criminal history and was also identifying himself as his brother who was a detective in a nearby state.  The point of this story is that retail anti-theft devices can and do deter theft. A store may or may not have Loss Prevention personnel but, the devices along with electronic article surveillance antennas can prevent shoplifting.
The Alpha Ink Tag can be applied to nearly all clothing items, as well as comforters, sheet sets, even purses and totes.  The tag has one side with dye capsules built in that are designed to break if someone attempts to tamper with the tag and remove it on their own.  The only way to take it off without risking damage to the merchandise is with a detachment key controlled by the store, usually secured at the point of sale.  The tag is pinned to merchandise and makes a tight seal hindering attempts to pry them off.  I have seen the results of ink ruining clothes after a shoplifter attempted to take an Alpha Ink Tag off of a pair of jeans.  It leaves a mess that cannot be cleaned off of the garment and unless you are into tie-dye, you wouldn’t want to wear it.
It is my firm belief that retail anti-theft devices do deter theft, especially when they are placed in a prominent location on an item.  In the situation my Loss Prevention Officers had to contend with, I believe that had our store used an Alpha Ink Tag on shoes the shoplifter would never had attempted to steal the boots in the first place. I can’t say he would not have tried to steal something else if ink tags had been used, but who knows?  In this case had the criminal been deterred by a retail anti-theft device and left the store empty handed the Loss Prevention Officer would not have been bitten.
As a side note for those who would argue against Loss Prevention Officers because of rare instances like this, I would point out that in the vast majority of cases where we had two Loss Prevention department members available, we had few fights or injuries.  The training program we had made officer and shoplifter safety paramount.  There were other benefits the officers brought to the store such as helping find lost purses, cars and children.  They built partnerships with police and store managers.  While stores in our area and even next to ours were robbed, we never experienced one robbery in the nearly 14 years I worked there.
Oh, and what happened to the Security Officer after the bite?  He had to go through a series of shots to ensure he did not acquire any blood borne pathogens. He did return to work and fully recovered, but it was not an experience he wanted to go through again.

CLOTHING SECURITY TAGS OUTWIT SHOPLIFTERS IN RETAILERS DAILY

CLOTHING SECURITY TAGS OUTWIT SHOPLIFTERS IN RETAILERS DAILY!
Clothing Security Tags-4                                                                 ML Blog 05
  Security Tags on Clothes-4
When it comes to merchandise protection in my stores, I am always looking for the highest quality security devices that are cost effective. Are you looking for a fix that won’t break the bank? Each year expert thieves find new ways to pilfer our highest profit products. As retailers, we must remain hyper vigilant in the fight against loss. I’ve worked in several retail stores who at first, did not have security tags on clothes. I would watch clothing items walk out of the store daily. The shoplifters were taking over the location, leaving shelves empty and sales spiraling down. We could not allow this to keep happening, so we implemented clothing security tags on our products.
As a Loss Prevention manager, I frequently scan my CCTV cameras to analyze trends and patterns. I noticed we were consistently shrinking out in women’s & juniors clothing, so this was a high focus area for my store. We implemented a plan to have any women’s & juniors clothing priced at $29.99 and up, to utilize clothing security tags. Now that we executed a plan, we need to see if it really was working. I was scanning cameras one afternoon and noticed 2 woman in my store carrying large purses. The purses were extremely flat & appeared empty on camera. This alerted me to them, as I know this routine all too well! They both rapidly selected 15 high dollar shirts, priced at $49.99-69.99 each piece. After selecting the items, they lookout for store personnel as they head straight for an area with no checkouts or shoppers around. I knew they were now ready to conceal.  They bend down to the ground as they get ready to load up their empty purses. They pull the shirts off the hangers, but then stop to discuss. I can see both subjects placing their hands on the clothing security tags. They try to break it off, but the task proved too difficult. They leave the 15 shirts on the ground, grab their empty purses, and exit into the parking lot. They didn’t realize my store places security tags on clothes. This showed my store team the importance of ensuring that we are utilizing the clothing security tags. These 2 subjects could have absconded close to $1000 in one instance. If the shoplifters decided to be bold by stealing with the tags on, they would set off the security system as they approach the exit. The security system would alert by making a massive noise and light up at the same time. This would place all eyes on them and allow the associates to react in time. Keeping security tags on clothes works as a deterrent in several different ways, which makes them extremely successful in retailers. At my location, we see several of these same incidents similar to the 2 subjects I watched. The shoplifter leaves empty handed due to our tough merchandise protection standards. Each week my store pulls our known theft numbers to see where we stand. For those 2 specific departments, we have noticed a massive decline in thefts after we started the new plan. I’ve personally seen this program work every time. Another positive aspect of the tags, are how customer friendly they are. My store manager really likes that they are reusable and easy to remove at the point of sale. This allows customers to still be able to check out at the registers quickly.

Clothing items are extremely easy to conceal for thieves. Improve your bottom line by simply placing security tags on clothes. Why not protect your assets with an easy, cost effective fix? Clothing security tags ensure that your business is protected. You will notice a difference in your theft problem immediately at your store!

Shoplifters Eyeing Your Sunglasses And Designer Frames? Eyewear Tags Take Away Their Temptation And Save YOU Money!

Shoplifters Eyeing Your Sunglasses And Designer Frames? Eyewear Tags Take Away Their Temptation And Save YOU Money!
I have a bad habit of going through sunglasses far too quickly. I misplace them, I lose them, and I sit on them when I put them on the seat of my car. I have bought a pair for each of my cars just to avoid moving them between vehicles and guess what…I still lose them. For this reason I have stopped purchasing expensive sunglasses and I have made stores that specialize in dollar merchandise my go to sunglass provider. For most people sunglasses are an important part of their style and they spend money to make sure they get a pair that expresses who they are while protecting their eyes from the brightness and glare of the sun, especially when driving. Some buy them for the outdoor sports they love or for the job they do. Whatever the reason, people will spend a lot of money on a quality pair of glasses, just not me because I can’t take care of them. For the stores that carry a better quality of sunglasses, theft is always a concern and trying to prevent shoplifting is a challenge. In spite of this challenge there are retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security that can deter criminals who would clean out your inventory if given half a chance.
The Alpha Security Eyewear Tag gives store owners the advantage of electronic article surveillance protection (EAS) while allowing shoppers the ability to try on glasses without affecting the way they fit. The tags are reusable so there is no need for constant replenishment of these retail anti-theft devices. When the customer is ready to make a purchase the glasses are taken to the point of sale where a special Alpha Security detachment tool is used by the cashier to remove the tag. Tags are then stored in a bin until ready for application on new products received by the store. Stores that invest in EAS pedestals, like those sold by Checkpoint Systems, have the advantage of alarm protection should a thief attempt to walk out with a protected pair of glasses. The pedestals sound a loud, beeping alert and flash colorful LED lights to alert employees that a tagged item is carried too close to the doors. Often this is enough to deter a theft since shoplifters don’t want to chance being caught. For store owners that have chosen not to invest in EAS pedestals the Eyewear Tag still provides ample deterrence value. In order to try to remove a tag a thief would have to try to force a tag off of the arm of the sunglasses and we all know how fragile those arms can be (especially me)!
How effective is this retail anti-theft device in protecting product? On the Alpha Security website they have a “Hard Tag Infographic” and in it they have posted, “A leading sunglasses chain began using the Eyewear Tag. Shrink went from more than 20% to ZERO! Even with no EAS!” Having worked in Retail Loss Prevention for nearly 20 years, being a L.P. Manager for 13 of those years, I can tell you I have NEVER seen any other shortage reduction strategy that has been THAT effective! Think about that if you own a small eyewear store(s) and have annual sales of $100,000 a year, 20% shrink is $20,000! What could you do with a windfall of $20,000 added back to your profit line?  Could you use that money to add another part-time employee to your staff thereby increasing customer service and increasing sales even more? Could you use it for pay raises and thereby increase employee morale and their desire to improve their own sales performance? You may choose to expand your business or simply enjoy the fruits of your labor and investment.
Retail anti-theft devices are proven to be effective at shortage reduction through deterrence and tag detection adding to store profitability. For sunglass and eyeglass stores, Eyewear Tags may be the ultimate solution for eliminating theft in your business and driving theft-related shortage to zero.
Eyewear Tags are important and we can help you with them. Call 1.770.426.0547 and let’s talk.
