So Completely Frustrating – Lack of Retail Anti-Theft Devices

Last week I went shopping to find a new pair of earrings. Because I was trying to match a particular outfit, I was limited with what style and color I could buy.

There were earrings missing, or lying on the ground in complete disarray. Just when I would spy a pair I really liked, there would be something wrong with them. Without a doubt it would be the only pair like that on the rounder, too!

It was so frustrating because this store had been completely ransacked in their fashion jewelry department. I went there specifically because they advertised having the best selection at the best prices.

Eventually, I just ended up leaving without making a purchase. It was completely frustrating because I work in security and I know that there is a company called Alpha Security that makes a whole range of products named Alpha Jewel Loks designed to prevent shoplifting from happening.

Alpha Jewel Loks easily attach to the jewelry, not the jewelry cards. This makes them harder to steal because the shoplifters can’t detach the retail anti theft devices. It also makes it easier for the stores to keep their merchandise together and undamaged. If you can’t get the earrings off the cards, you save yourself, and the customers, a huge amount of frustration.

For Your Viewing Pleasure – Clothing Security Tags

As a merchandising manager, I have spent countless hours trying to find the balance between my clothing security and my visual display and merchandising guidelines. To be used in conjunction with your Checkpoint tags, the Alpha Security Fashion2 is smaller and more visually appealing. These clothing security tags are customer friendly, fashion forward, and of course a huge deterrent for shoplifters.

Just because you are using clothing security tags for loss prevention does not mean that you can’t continue to make your product and your displays look their very best. The biggest difference these tags have is that they are much smaller. They are also available in black instead of just a standard white. This makes them less obvious visually in your presentations, but does not conceal them completely from the roving eye of a shoplifter.

Security tags on clothes should not be a distraction from marketing or sales promotions. By making these particular tags smaller, easier to color coordinate with darker fabrics, and be overall less obvious is a huge win. There is the same high quality and reliability as a clothing alarm that comes with Checkpoint tags

Your visual presentation will not be compromised in the same way it has been for years when you use big and bulky clothing security tags.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint Tags, a Clothing Alarm, Clothing Security or Clothing Security Tags to put Security Tags on Clothes and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

I can’t Know It All – Background Checks

However, there are many things that I do know. Some came from formal education, others from on-the-job training, or real life experience.  All of these experiences come together to mold me into a reasonably well-rounded person with expertise in some of life’s challenges.

It does not make me proficient, skilled, adept, or even knowledgeable, i.e., an expert in all things.

As much as I would like to be all of the above in all things, reality dictates that it will never happen – to me or anyone else.  We simply cannot know (or find out) all that we need to know without consulting someone with expertise in many of the areas that we are inexperienced.  A great example of this principle is background check experts.

I know the basics of what background checks accomplish and why they are important to my business. I have absolutely no idea how to conduct the thorough employee background checks that are critical for the pre-employment screening process.

Background check experts know exactly what to do and how to do it. They are well versed in the legal aspect of what can and cannot be asked as well as having the time to devote to the process.  They run background checks EVERY DAY and have been thoroughly trained in the process.

Thankfully, I don’t have to be the expert here. I can concentrate on my work and let the background check expert’s focus on their work – conducting my pre-employment screening process.

Pesky Customers – Employee Theft

When you have an associate or a manager insisting on working overnights, you might want to look at a few things first. Ask why they are unable to be productive during the day. Are they unmotivated and disgruntled? Well, then that employee probably is a prime candidate for causing employee theft. It might not the best idea to leave them unsupervised at night. I think you are just asking to start an employee theft investigation.

Over the years, I have seen many employees and managers convince themselves that the only way to really get anything accomplished is to work an overnight shift. They complain that the customers (gasp!) are too needy and prevent them from accomplishing their tasks.

While they may rid themselves of any pesky customers, we forget that it also rids them of any security measures that might prevent employee theft. You see, it is not just about keeping a door locked or having retail anti-theft devices that prevent internal theft. It is having another set of eyes on them to keep an employee honest.

If you do let them work overnights, make sure you do your best to control the situation. Can you set a perimeter alarm so the building is secured while they are working? That is an alarm that only responds when an exterior door is opened, but not the motion detectors on the inside. That way someone else locks the employee into the store for the night. Barring a medical emergency, they would stay inside until someone unlocks the door the next morning.

Easy To Use – Clothing Security

I am generally a very well organized person – definitely not a space cadet.  I have a place for everything and everything in its place. I have To Do lists, Task lists, calendars, organizers, email reminders, etc. If you can name it, I have probably tried it at some point in my quest for organization.

Retail is a particularly challenging environment in which to achieve and maintain organization.  In the course of going from my office (around three departments and up a flight of stairs to another group of offices), I can be stopped by three to thirty people, each one requiring something of me. If I don’t record this in my notebook, I will likely forget; and if I lose the notebook in which I wrote the list, well things can easily start to fall apart.

Needless to say, I like to stay organized for the sake of my own survival. That’s why I like things that are easy to use, especially when it comes to clothing security.

Clothing security tags usually have two separate parts to them. This makes them easy to use and even easier to lose one part of the tag. Half a tag will do nothing for your clothing security. The Alpha Fashion2 Accessory Tag is a great product that eliminates this problem.  It is a Checkpoint tag, lanyard and pin all in one – no parts to lose, quick, and easy to use.

It’s In The Signs – Alpha Nano Gate

The Alpha Nano Gate can be a perfect solution for restrooms. There are usually signs outside of the public restrooms inside of stores asking that you not bring merchandise inside that has not been paid for. By having a smaller design, the Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate easily mounts in more tight spaces than their traditional pedestal counterparts. Since restroom vestibules are typically small designs, this works well.

While most people willingly obey the signs, there are some people that don’t. It can be because they feel that they do not need to adhere to the request, or they have more dastardly reasons. Unfortunately, a posted sign is not enough to eliminate the potential for loss.

This retail anti-theft device can be used to ensure that anyone looking to ignore the sign will have an alarm to answer to. This retail anti-theft device works with your existing system. It is a small box that does the same function as the larger towers that are already in place at your exit doors.

It is important to prevent shoplifting before a thief takes merchandise inside. Due to obvious privacy concerns, it is a loss prevention nightmare to try and make an apprehension after a suspected shoplifter enters a restroom.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Tell-Tale Behaviors – Stopping Employee Theft

Most of the shrink in the average retail store is a result of employee theft – simply because employees have more access to company assets. Associates exhibit the same telling behaviors as shoplifters do when engaged in illegal activities. Close observation of both shoppers and employees is imperative in the ongoing battle to thwart “sticky fingers”.

Any sudden changes in an associate’s behavior should definitely warrant suspicion that internal theft is a distinct possibility. Other suspicious behaviors that should wave a red flag include an employee who seems overly friendly, complains about their financial situation or that they are underpaid, as well as an associate who has frequent visits from friends and family at the store.

I once encountered an associate while I was working as an LP professional who frequently complained to fellow coworkers and everyone who would listen that he was unhappy at home and couldn’t make ends meet. One day this same associate came into work with a high-end set of $200 headphones and a new MP3 player.  He continued to complain about his financial situation. Within the same week, he was gloating about a designer belt and showing everyone the receipt for $400 cash.

I decided to conduct the employee theft investigation when this information triggered awareness of the contradiction of words and actions. We posted a covert CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) camera above the register in the department in which he usually worked.

We caught the associate red-handed stealing cash from the register after a few weeks of surveillance.  He admitted making duplicate receipts for customers who were paying with large amounts of cash when questioned about the theft. He used those receipts to void the transactions later at his register and pocketed the money at the end of his shift.

Being observant of associate behaviors may lead to an employee theft discovery. Having a reliable CCTV system in your store can play an integral role in initiating, conducting, and facilitating the successful employee theft investigation to rid your business of undesirable associates as well as serve a warning to others.

Just The Facts Ma’am – Background Check Experts

It is about having all of the facts. The more information you have, the better qualified you will be to make the best possible decisions. Background check experts help give you those advantages. They help you discover if an applicant is telling the truth regarding their criminal activity.

Sometimes, an applicant may even admit to having a prior conviction, but they might down play what the actual conviction or offense was. That way they are being truthful about having a record, but are trying to make it sound better on paper than what it actually was. Ultimately you can now make that decision because you truly have all of the information to make that determination.

Maybe it’s just me, but if I was caught committing a crime that I was later convicted of, I would tell as few people as possible. In particular, if I were trying to get my life back on track, I would definitely try to avoid telling any potential new employer to try and get a better shot at being hired. That is why background check experts are a critical part of pre-employment screening.

These experts will conduct pre-employment screening on your applicants and determine if there is unreported criminal activity. They can tell you if this was something from the distant past, or recent repeat offenses.

Just because you find out (through the help of background check experts or the applicant’s honesty) that there was a conviction, does not mean you absolutely must reject that applicant. We built the correctional system based on the premise of rehabilitation. Some applicants will have learned their lesson and will not commit another crime.

Now, Not Later – Clothing Security

I frequently say to my toddler, “whenever you are ready”. It may seem sarcastic, but it helps me put things back into perspective by reminding me that when I am with her, I am on her time frame, not mine. It is one of the few times in life that I am challenged to slow down, not speed up.

“Whenever you are ready” is more likely to mean, “it should have been done 10 minutes ago” in my professional life. I put this same urgency into clothing security. It is a huge and potentially costly mistake to wait to attach clothing security tags such as Checkpoint tags until “someone” feels like doing it. A thief will likely show up and rob you blind while “someone” is waiting around to get the job done.

Shoplifters, especially professional ones, are looking for every opportunity to exploit these very situations. It only takes one unlocked door, one stack of jeans without clothing security tags, or one moment of inattentiveness to fuel a very costly situation.

Make sure that “whenever you are ready” means “do it right, and do it right now”.

Clothing security is about consistency and timeliness in execution. Having the finest clothing security such as Checkpoint tags does absolutely no good if they are left sitting in a basket somewhere, instead of where they belong – on your merchandise.

When in doubt – Checkpoint Security tags

If you haven’t spent a lot of time with Checkpoint systems, you may not truly understand just how beneficial Checkpoint Security Tags can be to your shop. I know that until I worked in retail security for a major company, I had no idea just how invaluable they are to a successful business.

I used to think that the Checkpoint security tags just registered an alarm if a shoplifter was trying to steal an item. What I didn’t know was that there was more to them. These Checkpoint security tags are anti-shoplifting.

To be more encompassing, anti-shoplifting is when the tags act as a deterrent also. Most shoplifters know that if an item has a tag on it, that item is not an easy target. That means that even before a shoplifter attempts to steal an item, they will stop and look for a tag. If the tag is present they will more often than not leave without a theft attempt. Better yet, they will go to a competitor that does not use security tags. Better – unless that competitor is you.

What’s the difference? If the tags were just designed to stop shoplifting, they would only be able to prevent shoplifters that are in the process of attempting to steal an item.
