A Show of Support – Clothing Security

Using clothing security tags on lingerie items has always been problematic. The material is usually very delicate or stretchy. Conventional clothing security tags that use a pin run the risk of snagging or damaging these delicate fabrics.

By using other types of clothing security (like soft tags) you run the risk that shoplifters will simply tear off the tags and discard them. This solves the damaging issue, but does not keep your merchandise any more protected than if they never had a tag to begin with.

Now the market has a new option for clothing security- the Alpha Security Multi Tag. This clothing alarm has a different design. Instead of using only one pin and a back, the Multi Tag uses a two-pin system.

Instead of having the pin pierce through the fabric of the merchandise you are trying to protect, the multi pin system now gives you an alternative. The merchandise can be run in between the two pins and secured with the back. The pins can flank things like a bra or spaghetti strap on lingerie or swimsuits. These tags can even be used for accessories because the overall size of the tags is relatively small.

By eliminating the need to pierce the merchandise, you eliminate the risks of snagging or damaging these delicate fabrics.

Safety First – Employee Background Checks

Many companies, especially small businesses have no financial budget for workplace accidents. As a result, even a single accident can cause financial devastation. It is just one of many reasons why employee background checks are a useful tool in a store’s overall profitability.

Who would you rather have working for you? Someone who is responsible and alert? Or, someone who is reckless with themselves and others? Yep, someone who is responsible is the ideal employee. Conducting pre-employment screening is a good way to decipher if an applicant is responsible.

If someone has been in criminal, financial or legal trouble, they have been reckless with themselves. For whatever reason, they did not hold themselves to a higher standard. By comparison, someone who has stayed out of trouble has been more responsible for themselves and their actions.

If a future employee has not proven to be responsible for themselves, why would we believe that they would miraculously be responsible with others?  An extension would be that they might not be diligent in protecting the store, the customers, and the other employees from accidents.

That means you might put your store at a higher risk for these unbudgeted expenses by employing higher risk applicants. By conducting an employee background check you have a better chance of determining if an employee will help facilitate a safe working environment. Remember, if they can control and manage themselves, they are more likely to control and manage their surroundings at work.

Employee Benefits – Employee Background Checks

Not every applicant who wants to avoid employee background checks does so because they have something to hide. Sometimes they just want to ensure their drive and innovation will be put to good use and not squelched under a barrage of regulations and managerial control.

Some job applicants can perceive pre-employment screening as the precursor to being micro managed or watched once they actually begin to work at your store or company. That can make a difference in some of the applicants who would apply for a job opening.

That being said, the solution is not in forgoing pre-employment screening. The answer is in properly explaining the advantages that the employee will benefit from.

The number one benefit is safety. You (as the employer) are doing everything you can to provide a safe working environment. By eliminating employees with past criminal offenses that include violence or theft, you are securing the workplace for your employees.

Secondly, by verifying previous work experience, your employees have a better chance of working beside other employees whose experience and education have been verified. One of the biggest workplace complaints is that co-workers are inept. If they had lied on their resume to get a job they were unqualified for, they will eventually show their deficit in their job performance.

The employee background checks are designed to create an all around better work environment. It is not just the employer that benefits from this workplace. By ensuring upfront that the employees know how they are benefiting, you will help them to understand why you are the company they want to work for.

The Delivery Scheme- Employee Theft Investigation

It is not uncommon for an employee who is in charge of receiving merchandise deliveries to be approached by the vendor to steal product. Employee theft investigations revolving around an employee and a vendor are becoming increasingly common.
A common scheme is for the vendor to work with an employee. When the vendor show up with a merchandise delivery, the employee does not verify that all of the merchandise comes off the truck and enters the store.  That creates an overage on this vendor’s delivery truck, and leaves you with an inventory shortage.
Either way, the employee theft has occurred and it is hard to trace since the invoices have been signed off as a full receipt of product.
There are a few ways to combat this kind of internal theft. The first is to conduct random audits of shipments. That means as the vendor is dropping off the merchandise you actually go back and count. Chances are if they were going to short the shipment, they will bring all of the merchandise inside. After a few random audits, it will be too risky for the vendor to try and short your store.
Another way is to set up a regulation with the shipping company that limits the amount of time a vendor has to unload their truck and leave. This helps eliminate the time the vendor has with your employees developing relationships that might allow the confidence to commit employee theft together.

In With The In Crowd- Checkpoint tags

Checkpoint tags on name brand clothes will keep your merchandise in stock and keep your popular with the “in crowd”. Who is the “in crowd”? Well for many teenagers and young adults the “in crowd” is the one that wears all of the right clothes- the en vogue name brands.
I don’t recall there ever being a time when it was not important to wear a name brand. Even though the names might change, having a designer label or the right name brand is always important- especially to teenagers. Since these teens are often under serious pressure to have the right look, or to fit in they often resort to making attempts to defeat security tags on clothes to steal their coveted attire.
By increasing their risk of getting caught, you can tip the teen’s decision-making scales in your favor. Teenagers do not have the same level of experience or determination needed to defeat clothing alarms.
In some ways, teens have more driving factors to convince them not to steal- at least when provided with the right motivation. Having clothing security tags increases the risk of a teenager getting caught stealing.
If they are caught, they know that their parents will find out, maybe even their friends or their school. As much as they are pressured to wear these name brand clothes, there is equal pressure not to get caught.

Out of Necessity, Not greed – Internal Theft

Quite frequently, we hold the mindset that internal theft comes from greed. We see employees living beyond their means to have the latest fashions or electronics, or simply to have disposable cash.

In the latest employee theft investigation, we had a sharp reality that sometimes, people simply steal because they need it and don’t know any other option.

We saw an employee eating a bag of chips and had wondered if she had paid for it. When we reviewed the journal transactions, we saw that she did in fact ring up the bag of chips. However, she had paid for those chips with a store credit.

When we went back and reviewed the refund that generated the store credit, we discovered that the employee had created a fraudulent refund. This employee rang up an item that was sitting close to the register for the return.

It was not her item to refund, nor did a customer initiate it. We knew right then that the internal theft was not from the chips, but from a fake refund transaction conducted by the employee.

We questioned the employee about the transaction and she admitted that she needed the money to buy food for her and her son. She decided that her only option was to steal to make ends meet.

No internal theft is excusable, but this was a reality check that sometimes theft is not about greed, but simply about survival.

You Get What You Pay For – Background Check Experts

When you have background check experts to do the digging, you will have more successful and thorough pre-employment screening. Unfortunately, just as you want to pre-screen your job applicants, you also need to make sure that your background check experts really are who they say they are.

Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true. There probably is a reason why a company might be boasting unreasonably low (or high prices). Most reputable companies should fall into a general price range. Anything outside of that price range might be a cause for concern.

There is usually a reason why the price is so low. They may not verify information through a legitimate credit-reporting agency. That can put you into potential legal problems down the road. If they give you bad information that causes you to decline an applicant, you are the one that will ultimately be held responsible. An applicant has a legal recourse as they can verify and dispute this information.

The price might also be low because these so-called background check experts are actually a scam. They might want to steal personal information for their own usage. By keeping a low price, they are attempting to lure in unsuspecting customers who will hand over applicants’ information without question.

The flip side might be a company that is priced too high. They might claim to have additional resources or benefits. In reality, they might just be trying to falsely inflate what they can actually and legally do for you.

What Do We Owe – Internal Theft

During an internal theft interview we get a chance to talk more in depth with the dishonest employee. Unfortunately we don’t always get the answers we need to questions like “why does internal theft happen”? I can say that there is one justification that most dishonest employees give us.

They tell us that they stole because they felt like they were owed something.

Sometimes they feel like they were slighted for a promotion. Others feel that the time and effort they put into the job is not adequately compensated.

It doesn’t matter that it might have been their choice and ambition to volunteer to work overtime or undesirable shifts initially. If, over time, they do not get the benefit (raise, promotion, recognition, etc.) they expected, they often ends up being a bitter and resentful employee.

We often discover that through the course of our employee theft investigation quite a few of the employees were at one time some of the best employees in the store or company. This can lead to an open door for employee theft. It is infinitely easier to steal if you have access to keys, alarm or safe codes, or overrides on a register.

One way to deter these thefts is to limit the access to all available resources. Can you put a check and balance into place through processes? Start using bag checks for all employees including yourself and your managers. Make sure the person making deposits is not the only one reconciling bank slips, shortages or overages.

The Game Changer- Alpha Jewel Lok

What if there was a way to prevent shoplifting that was designed specifically for jewelry? That would be such a game changer. Typically, retail anti-theft devices have not been designed with jewelry in mind. They are designed for clothing and have been adapted for jewelry and accessory usage only because there have not been other options available. As a result, these devices are usually attached to the packaging and not directly onto the jewelry.

This creates effectiveness issues as the retail anti-theft devices are easily defeated by separating the product from the packaging. Once the packaging is removed it is very easily discarded. That is why empty jewelry cards or tags found in a store are a clear indicator of theft.

Because the Alpha Jewel Lok is tailored for a specific product, the overall effectiveness is increased. Alpha Security designed the Alpha Jewel Lok retail anti theft devices to attach directly onto the product and not to the packaging. This makes it more difficult to steal the jewelry since the Alpha Jewel Lok provides a form of product denial. Without the detachers, it is virtually impossible to defeat the locks. It is more likely that you will destroy the jewelry before you can defeat the Alpha Jewel Lok.

Weed Out The Bad Seeds – Background Checks Experts

If you do not weed out the bad seeds up front, how much will their initial training and later on for the training of their replacement cost? What about your potential inventory or cash losses created from hiring a career criminal? Not every employer prosecutes for theft, even though they terminate employees for it. That means that running criminal background checks along side employment verification is critical to pre-employment screening.

Only you can analyze the costs of hiring background check experts versus accurately speculating the costs of potential employee theft.

Most companies find out that conducting some form of pre-employment screening will eventually balance out the costs associated with a single bad hire. Unfortunately, most of those companies figure it out only after a major case of employee theft has surfaced.

In order to conduct a realistic cost/benefit analysis, you need to be able to anticipate both the short and long term costs. In this situation, the comparison would be between the immediate or short term cost of paying background check experts, and the long-term costs associated with hiring and then rehiring a replacement for a bad hire.

When you hire background check experts, chances are they can investigate more points than you can yourself simply because they have the time and better resources. Once you factor in the time you would have to be paid to do the checks yourself, you might find the cost benefit analysis is swayed in a different direction.
