Just like every store employee, at some point you have to stop watching a suspected shoplifter in order to attend to another function of your job. I had one particular incident that I still think of because I knew this was a solid case, and our lack of clothing security was why she was here.
One time I spent thirty minutes waiting and “cleaning” the fitting room, because there was a girl inside, who was going to steal some shirts, and kept checking to see if I left. I was bound and determined that I could out wait her. Eventually she had to give up, right?
That was a great idea, at least until I had another pressing matter come up.
There was a hurt customer that I needed to attend to. So I left my potential suspect to address the injured customer. It didn’t take long before I saw the girl leave. When I went to see if she left shirts, all I found was a pile of empty hangers.
I knew that if we had used anti theft devices, if they were Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint tags, this girl would not have left with our merchandise.
