Once upon a time, I had an employee. He was very good at certain aspects of his job. However, he was prone to drama in his life. Anytime the drama struck, his job performance would falter. Fast forward many years later. My husband received an application for one of his stores. The applicant seemed qualified on paper, so my husband had a phone interview with him. Where Credit is Due- Internal Theft

A customer who purchases an item, loses or throws out their receipt and later needs to return that item are commonly given a store credit/ merchandise credit. Most customers are generally ok with this because they will either be replacing the item they are returning, or will have other shopping they can do at our store. Employees who complete a return without a receipt are given a store credit also. This can lead to a whole new end game for internal theft.
During an internal theft case, an employee will conduct a fraudulent return. They will be issued a store credit because a no receipt return was done. There is no receipt because there was never a sale to begin with (which is why it is a fraudulent return). The employee will then use the credit to purchase more items.
Frequently they will use their employee discount along with this credit. This can be because they don’t want the cashier to suspect anything when they make their purchase so they use their discount. It can also be out of greed. If they got the store credit for free, why not make it go even further by using the employee discount to get more merchandise even cheaper.

Educating Your Customers- Alpha Shark Tag

That means that customers have a decreased ability to purchase an item or entire outfit with the intention of wearing once and then returning the items. This is not designed to prevent shoplifting. The Least Complicated – Clothing Alarm

Shoplifters will always find the path of least resistance. When they are trying to shoplift clothing, they will go out of their way to find merchandise that does not have any clothing security tags on them.

If that is not possible, the next thing that a shoplifter does is to try and leave the store without any visual clues that they have any merchandise with them. That means they will try to conceal the stolen product.

Concealing merchandise is not about trying to bypass the clothing alarms. It is about plausible deniability. Even if the clothing alarm responds to the concealed clothing security tags, a shoplifter who is seen empty handed can blame the alarm on something else.

If an employee does not see any merchandise being stolen, they have a harder time trying to get product back. Compare this to a shoplifter carrying merchandise, or holding a bulging purse. More experienced shoplifters will use boosters to effectively conceal product. It can include false casts on arms and legs. There are ways to add extra hidden pockets to an already puffy coat. Sometimes it is as simple as a booster under a woman’s dress that looks like a pregnancy belly, but is really a hollow shell designed to have stolen clothing stuffed inside of it.

Can You Do Better? – Background Check Experts

There are many companies out there that specialize in being background check experts. Their main function is to dig deep into an applicant or current employee’s past to help make a realistic determination in the hiring process.

Unfortunately, even these background check experts can miss out on finding a critical piece of history. As we have seen in some of the more tragic recent events, major companies whose employees need extremely high levels of security clearance have missed something big in their pre-employment screening.
