Drill Down the Reports- Clothing Security

I was recently talking to a national company who was incurring losses due to theft at the hands of major organized crime rings. They wanted to know how to reduce the losses and increase their clothing security.
I spoke with them about some of their basic operations to get a better feel for what we could do for them. As it turned out, some most of the issues had nothing to do with clothing alarms or clothing security tags. The biggest complications came from their inventory ordering and management.
Their inventory relied heavily on special buys. These were big purchases of designer clothing that were either a second run or otherwise greatly reduced item. Once these items sold out, there was no rebuy of the merchandise. Inventory was taken once a year so it was potentially twelve months before a loss was identified. Needless to say tracking their losses was a difficult task.
I suggested that they start by drilling down the sales reports. It is there that they would be able to see what was there but also what was not. If they were not selling in a particular area they might be experiencing theft issues, If you don’t have the product to sell, your sales suffer. Next is to evaluate the clothing security on those items and increase their usage accordingly.

The End Game – Criminal Background Checks

Many hiring managers look at a few very important things when they review applications. They look to see if this is someone with the skill set required for the position. They look to see if this is someone that might have some longevity with their company; reducing turnover costs. They look to see if this is someone who can pass the required criminal background checks included in their pre-employment screening.

All of those things are important to a hiring manager. As a small business owner, we actually are the hiring managers. There is rarely payroll for someone other than us to be a hiring manager. As such, we need to determine what our end game is going to be for this employee.

As much as we hate to admit it, sometimes we simply hire someone to be a warm body in our stores. That means we never really expect much out of them and when they quit unexpectedly, well, we are not surprised. We didn’t hire to make our store better. We simply hired to have someone with a name badge on in our store.

These are the decisions that get us into trouble. When we don’t expect the best, we get disposable employees who may or may not pass more in depth criminal background checks.

The end game is not for longevity. Unfortunately, these are the employees who will cost us so much more than we realize. They will be the ones who steal, give poor service, and cost us more money, as we have to start the hiring and training process over again in such a short span of time.

The Name Game- Clothing Security Tags

I don’t recall there ever being a time when it was not important to wear a name brand. Even though the names might change, having a designer label or the right name brand is always important- especially to teenagers. Since these teens are often under serious pressure to have the right look, or to fit in with the “right crowd”, they often resort to making attempts to defeat clothing security to steal their coveted attire.
One of the redeeming factors for retailers is that teenagers are not hardened career criminals. This means that clothing security tags make a greater impact on thwarting those types of theft.
Teenagers do not have the same level of experience or determination needed to defeat security tags on clothes. In some ways, they have more driving factors to convince them not to steal. Having Checkpoint tags increases the risk of a teenage getting caught stealing. If they are caught, they know that their parents will find out, maybe even their friends or their school. As much as they are pressured to wear these name brand clothes, there is equal pressure not to get caught.
By increasing their risk of getting caught, you can tip the teen’s decision-making scales in your favor. Clothing security on name brand clothes will keep your merchandise in stock and keep your popular with the “right crowd”.

Other Return Frauds- Alpha Shark Tag

Wardrobing primarily focuses on clothing that was purchased with the intent of being worn only one time and then being returned for a full refund. However, there is more to this kind of return fraud than just clothes. Surprisingly, electronics are also targeted for one time use. Since Alpha Shark Tag (by Alpha Security) is designed to target clothing returns, electronics are still an unfortunate target of return fraud.
In a recent news article a story was shared about a gentleman bought an expensive projector for a client presentation at his work. After carefully saving and memorizing where every piece of plastic and twist tie went, he proceeded to package up this projector exactly as it was originally boxed.
This was, of course, after he had used it for the presentation. His boss had even applauded his ingenuity at saving the company money for not having to actually buy that particular piece of equipment.
In this particular situation, the merchandise would appear to be brand new. If there had been anything damaged – known or unknown- it wouldn’t be until the next customer purchased this projector and tried to use it. The store would be left with an unhappy customer as well as defective merchandise.

Fit The Shoes- Clothing Security

Using the Alpha Security Mini CableLok instead of checkpoint tags offers more range for your clothing security. The Mini CableLok is a small 3” aircraft grade cable with an isolated sound chamber. The cable can be looped through straps or decorations that would secure the lock. By increasing the range of merchandise that can now be secured, to makes it harder for a shoplifter or an employee to sneak out the door.
Shoes always pose a problem for clothing security tags. The two biggest losses in the shoe department are inventory shrink losses from shoplifters or employees.
These theft losses are pretty straightforward. Often a shoplifter will come into the store with an old pair of shoes and try on a new pair. They put their old pair in the box and walk out with the new pair.
An employee might do the same, or they will be more likely to pass off the shoes at the point of sale to a friend or relative.
Using clothing security only partially solves each of these problems. Since the pin system only works when there is an eye to thread the stickpin through, many shoes cannot be tagged.
Strappy heels, dress shoes and sandals are prime examples. Without clothing security, it is just that much easier for a shoplifter to walk out the door unnoticed.

In Good Conscience – Wardrobing Tags

When a customer buys an item of clothing that they have every intention of wearing to an event and then return it, it is called wardrobing.
This is a different action (and intention) than a customer who buys an item and tries it on at home, instead of in a dressing room at the store. The customer might still return the item, but they have not worn it to an event or for an extended period of time.
In the first scenario, the retailer is left with used product and cannot, in good conscience, sell the item for full price. To counteract this practice, retailers are more frequently using Alpha Shark Tags or a similar type of wardrobing tags.
The Alpha Shark Tag specifically is a red plastic tag that is attached with a pin closure. The pin clamps onto the merchandise. To be truly effective, the tags should be someplace conspicuous, such as the middle of the neckline on a dress or shirt. The tags are able to hold a small card or slip of paper that describes the return policy and the recommended removal method of these wardrobing tags.
The tags are easily removed with household scissors. However, they should only be removed once the customer is sure they are going to keep the item. This is how the retailer safeguards that this item has not been worn and can therefore be returned per company policies without having to question or second-guess the customer.

A Little Help From My Friends- Employee Theft Investigation

Employee theft is not always about just one employee working alone, as we might be prone to suspecting. All too often we find after we start digging into an employee theft investigation that there are multiple employees that work together to commit their crimes. Sometimes it is even an employee working with a vendor.
It is not uncommon for an employee who is in charge of receiving merchandise deliveries to be approached by the vendor to steal product. A common scheme is for the vendor to work with an employee. When the vendor show up with a merchandise delivery, the employee does not verify that all of the merchandise comes off the truck and enters the store.  That creates an overage on this vendor’s delivery truck, and leaves you with an inventory shortage.
From there, the merchandise is sold through various channels for cash or other goods. The vendor will then give the employee a share of those profits, compensating them for their role in the employee theft.
A variation is that all of the merchandise will actually come off the truck- to appease anyone watching, or any video that might be recording. From there, the employee might stash the merchandise in a trashcan, or in a box and take it outside for the vendor to pick up.
Either way, the employee theft has occurred and it is hard to trace since the invoices have been signed off as a full receipt of product.

The Employee Break Room.- Alpha Nano Gate

Just because the Alpha Nano Gate by Alpha Security was designed for anti shoplifting, doesn’t mean it can’t be the perfect solution to thwart employee theft.
One area where retail anti theft devices fail to prevent employee theft is the employee break room. Due to privacy concerns, cameras are often not allowed (by law) in some of these areas.
That makes it a prime place for an ingenious employee to ferret away product. They can hide merchandise and take advantage of moments of quiet to remove devises designed to prevent shoplifting. Afterwards, it is just a short trip into the employees bag or coat and the merchandise will be walked out without ever raising a suspicion.
One of the biggest advantages of using Alpha Nano Gate compared to other devices is its relatively small design. That makes it the perfect gatekeeper for areas that have limited space to put larger EAS/ RF pedestals. By installing Alpha Nano Gate outside of an employee break room or office; you can prevent another avenue for employee theft. The gate will deter employees from entering these areas with unpaid for merchandise.

Clothes Make The Man – Clothing Alarm

If your store really does have great customer service, you might not need clothing security tags. The service level will discourage shoplifters from attempting to steal inside your place of business. That being said, it really won’t matter if you have security tags on your clothes, if your employees decide not to give everyone that superior service level.

Take a shoplifting incident we had. A well-dressed man came into the store. He greeted and waved hello to all of the employees he came across. Because he was so outgoing and friendly, the employees completely disregarded him and ultimately did not provide any customer service.

When the clothing alarm went off the employees saw this man walking out the door with his arms piled full of clothes that had not been paid for. Can you imagine their shock and disbelief at what happened? It was in their hesitation that this man made a clean get-away.

Had the merchandise not had clothing security tags, they never would have even noticed. There would not have been a clothing alarm that made them look up to see what was going on. This is a situation where the perpetrator was going to steal regardless of how much clothing security there was. The only thing that would have stopped him was an employee actually giving excellent customer service.
