And a Bag of Chips – Employee Theft

The most recent employee theft investigation we conducted started out with a missing bag of chips.

We saw an employee eating a bag of chips and wondered if she had paid for it. When we reviewed the journal transactions, we saw that she did in fact ring up the bag of chips. However, she had paid for those chips with a store credit.

It was then that we suspected this might be an employee theft case.

This particular store credit was issued about fifteen minutes before the employee paid for her snack. When we went back and reviewed the refund that generated the store credit, we discovered that the employee had created a fraudulent refund.

She rang up an item that was sitting close to the register for the return. It was not her item to refund, nor did a customer initiate it. We knew right then that the employee theft was not from the chips, but from a fake refund transaction conducted by the employee.

We questioned the employee about the transaction and she admitted that she needed the money to buy food for her and her son. It was a very sad situation that she was in. Unfortunately, her pride kept her from asking for help. She decided that her only option was to steal to make ends meet.

While the theft was inexcusable, we were able to get the employee to some places that could help her and her son out until they could find better times.

The two primary places to look are at the foot bed and the sole. If you look inside the shoe, a worn shoe will start to show imprints of toes. Because this is not always reliable, look also to the sole for evidence of wear. When a shoe is worn outside of a house, you can see scuffs on the soles. You will also see tiny bits of dirt and gravel imbedded in it.

The National Debate- Wardrobing

When national retailer Nordstrom’s recently announced that they would be trailblazing the way for retailer’s to fight the common practice of wardrobing, it seems like every retail, fashion, and business blog lit up with a frenzied debate about the pros and cons and ethical righteousness from both points of view.
Just like with any form of theft or fraud, there is always a justification of why someone should carry out such an action. In the case of wardrobing, it comes down to the stance of “no harm, no foul”.
Many people underestimate the severity of wardrobing. Because an item is paid for and then refunded, the user feels like it is no different than any other refund that is conducted on a normal basis.
Retailer’s are often in a quandary on what to do with these items. Up until now, Nordstrom’s did not have a customer service friendly way to decline these returns. They were then left with items that had been worn, and ethically could not be sold as new. The garments might have been fine upon the initial glance, but if you turned them inside out, there were often the tell tale signs of use- makeup or deodorant debris, perhaps a not so new smell.

When national retailer Nordstrom’s recently announced that they would be trailblazing the way for retailer’s to fight the common practice of wardrobing, it seems like every retail, fashion, and business blog lit up with a frenzied debate about the pros and cons and ethical righteousness from both points of view.

Just like with any form of theft or fraud, there is always a justification of why someone should carry out such an action. In the case of wardrobing, it comes down to the stance of “no harm, no foul”.

Many people underestimate the severity of wardrobing. Because an item is paid for and then refunded, the user feels like it is no different than any other refund that is conducted on a normal basis.

Retailer’s are often in a quandary on what to do with these items. Up until now, Nordstrom’s did not have a customer service friendly way to decline these returns. They were then left with items that had been worn, and ethically could not be sold as new. The garments might have been fine upon the initial glance, but if you turned them inside out, there were often the tell tale signs of use- makeup or deodorant debris, perhaps a not so new smell.

Because there is not a defect, the retailer can’t send it back to the manufacturer for a credit. This leaves the retailer with having to take a massive discount to get the item out of their inventory.
