Think Beyond The Credit Report- Background Checks

We usually think of the big three credit reporting agencies when running pre employment screening, primarily because that is where we will find major defaults like foreclosures and public judgments. While these reports will give us a good insight into an applicant’s spending/ lifestyle habits, there are often other underlying issues that might not be made apparent in such a report.
What you might not know is that there are several other consumer-reporting agencies that can be used to conduct other kinds of background checks. These other agencies are actually fairly diverse in the information the collect. Because of that wide range, you (as a hiring manager or owner) you have a better understanding of the applicant as a whole, not just what incidents appear on a credit report.
For example, you can do a pre employment screening that revolves around their check writing habits. Even though it is not as commonplace as what it might have once been, some people will still write checks, especially if they are floating their own personal loan.
A bad check will not show up on one of the big three’s reports unless it goes past the point of collections. A check verification system will show if the checks are being written in the first place.
You can also find employment verification services too. These are certified agencies that track employment dates and sometimes the reason why an employee was terminated- particularly useful for employee theft cases that were not prosecuted.
The list of alternative reports goes on to include many different areas that, as an employer, is worth looking into during the background checks.

One Thing Leads to Another- Employee Theft Investigation

One of the best ways I have found to do an employee theft investigation is to find the beginning of a paper trail and then start to follow it. At my company, we use merchandise credits/ store credits for returns made without a receipt.
A real customer who purchases an item, loses or throws out their receipt and later needs to return that item are given a store credit/ merchandise credit. They are generally ok with this because they will either be replacing the item they are returning, or will have other shopping they can do at our store.
From an employee theft perspective, many employees who commit a fraudulent return will then be issued a merchandise credit. There is no receipt because there was never a sale to begin with. The employee will then use the credit to purchase more items. Frequently they will use their employee discount along with this credit.
That is were the paper trail begins. We track employee purchases and can also track a merchandise credit’s history. When we see an employee with the credit but no corresponding purchase history, we know something is not right.
After starting with a single merchandise credit, we can find that it will lead up to other merchandise credits that the employee uses. From there, the employee theft investigation doesn’t take long before we can figure out the pattern of what this employee is doing and how they are causing losses to our store.

Make It Crystal Clear- Wardrobing Retail

One of the best ways to implement a change of policy is to make sure your intentions are clear- make them black and white. When you start to use Alpha Shark Tags, you want to make sure your employees and your customers are clear form the start as to what they are and what they are used for.
Alpha Shark Tags are plastic clamps that affix to the front of a garment. There is usually a pin that clamps the two sides together securely. Because this is not an anti shoplifting device, the consumer can easily remove the tag with a pair of household scissors.
It is important that the consumer knows these tags are there for one reason only: to stop wardrobing retail. The consumer also needs to know that if the tag is removed, it will be unable to be reattached.
If the tag is removed, the retailer can use its discretion to reject a return even if it is within the store’s receipted return policy.
The best way to ensure the consumer knows this policy is to verbally tell them at the point of sale. The wardrobing tags can also attach a paper copy of the return and wardrobing retail policy to the garment to further ensure communication with the consumer. That eliminates a significant amount of possible confusion between the consumer and your store.

Increase Your Online Presence- Alpha Shark Tag

There are huge benefits to being an online retailer in addition to having the traditional brick and mortar set up. Your customers are not in the store so there is minimal employee interaction. You have a greater transaction dollar amount due to 100% credit card usage (versus cash). You don’t need to worry as much about retail anti theft devices, since you don’t have shoplifters online.
The down side, in particular with clothing, is that it is harder to determine if a customer has worn the clothing they purchased before they returned it.
Obviously, the customer will have to try the item on for fit once they receive it, but did they wear it out on the town?
By using the Alpha Shark Tag on your mail order/ online orders, you allow the customer to try the product on, but have a better answer for whether the item was used before it was returned, or if it was simply tried on for size.
When the customer’s merchandise arrives with the Alpha Security Alpha Shark Tag and instructions about your return policy and the tag you can eliminate the concern that your web orders are being wardrobed.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Professional Grade Interview- Wardrobing Retail

After a friend’s recent college graduation ceremony, one of the grads started talking about how she is always prepared for job interviews because she buys a new outfit for each interview and then returns it. Basically she was admitting to wardrobing retail to make herself look better (and more qualified) for a job interview.
She talked about how the hardest item to return was shoes. When you wear them outside, they immediately begin to show wear on the soles- retailers look for that at the returns desk. This is one of the biggest reasons why retailers don’t use Alpha Shark Tags on shoes to prevent wardrobing.
Everything else was pretty easy to return. She figured out that if a suit jacket has the price tag on the sleeve she could bend the plastic on the attachment and slide it carefully through the hole in the price tag. Instead of clipping the plastic piece, she pushes it back inside the sleeve for the interview.
If she wears a jacket then it will hide any tags that are in her shirt, which means she does not have to even try and take those tags off.
After she is done, she bends the plastic end back through the hole of the price tag. By doing this, the employer never sees the evidence of her scheme, and the retailer that she is returning the outfit to never suspects her of wardrobing because the tag is still attached.

Security Overkill- Retail Anti Theft Devices

Just because you can get extremely high tech or extravagant with your retail anti theft device’s features and functions does not mean you actually need to. Depending upon your store’s specific needs, you might not need to have the If you have a small square footage store, or the product is up at a POS where there is an employee nearby, having Alpha 2 Alarm or the Alpha 3 Alarm might be overkill.
Alpha Spider Wrap has three different levels of security needs. There is the basic line, which has a typical one-alarm functionality. The Alpha Security Alpha Spider Wrap is also available as either Alpha 2 Alarm or the Alpha 3 Alarm to prevent shoplifting.
Which one you need really depends on how your store is set up and what your goals are to prevent shoplifting. If you have a large footprint or theft takes place in remote parts of the store, having an early warning when the Alpha Spider Wrap is tampered with might be a good idea. If you mostly want the visual deterrent, than the 1 Alarm Wrap is a better and more cost efficient way to go.

Don’t Over Spend Where You Don’t Need To- Alpha Nano Gate

The Alpha Nano Gate works with Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices to simplify the process to prevent shoplifting. Some stores do not carry a large variety of high theft products. As such, there is no need for oversized and expensive towers and EAS systems that are, quite frankly overkill in these situations.
Say you have a general merchandise store that has a small area built in for electronics like GPS or mobile phones. Since these are items that you do not want to have floating around on their own, you have made a type of store in store location for them.
You can install the Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate specifically for these store in store areas. If anyone passes by with the Alpha 3 Alarm equipped electronics, the audible alarm will activate and the merchandise’s location can be determined while they are still in the store.
By only using retail anti theft devices where you truly need them, you save money from purchasing only what you will actually use, but also save money from not having to maintain larger expensive systems.

Caught Red Handed- Alpha Shark Tags

Even though it is rare to catch a customer actually wearing the clothes they are attempting to return, tampered Wardrobing Tags are the next best thing to catching them in the act. Alpha Shark Tags may not be able to tell you what the customer did with the clothes after they left the store, but they can decrease the likelihood that they were worn and then returned.
The Alpha Shark Tags help to reinforce your store’s return policy. Because the red tags simply can not be removed or reattached without showing signs of tampering, it is a fool proof way for your employees to determine if the clothing can be returned or not.
At one time, we employed a door guard whose job it was to greet customers, answer alarm activations, and to validate returns coming into the store. One day he told me about a girl that came in to return an outfit along with some nail polish. As she showed my employee the receipt and the bottle she was returning, told her that the color was really pretty and almost like the color she was wearing on her nails. It was a classic case of wardrobing retail.
Now this girl quickly changed her story and backtracked saying that she wasn’t going to return the nail polish, but she knew she was caught. She ended up leaving with all of the merchandise because her nails gave her away. Alpha Shark Tags would have prevented the outfit from being returned had we used them. If the girl had removed her polish before she came in, we never would have known she was wardrobing.

Sell The Company – Background Checks

While it is becoming more of a standard practice to conduct background checks prior to offering a job candidate an offer, there can still be mixed feelings from the applicant.

Some job applicants can perceive background checks as the precursor to being micro managed or watched once they actually begin to work at your store or company. That can make a difference in some of the applicants who would apply for a job opening. Not every applicant who wants to avoid pre-employment screening does so because they have something to hide. Sometimes they just want to ensure their drive and innovation will be put to good use and not squelched under a barrage of regulations and managerial control.

If you need those types of creative and innovative employees, you do not want them turned off before they are even hired.

That being said, the solution is not in forgoing background checks. The answer is in properly explaining the advantages that the employee will benefit from.

The number one benefit is safety. You (as the employer) are doing everything you can to provide a safe working environment. By eliminating employees with past criminal offenses that include violence or theft, you are securing the workplace for your employees.

Secondly, by verifying pervious work experience, your employees have a better chance of working beside other employees who actually know what they say they do. One of the biggest workplace complaints is that co-workers are inept. If they had lied on their resume to get a job they were unqualified for, they will eventually show their deficit in their job performance.

Keep It Off The Shelves – Clothing Security

Clothing security goes beyond just putting security tags on clothes in your store. It involves taking a second look at the opportunities your store presents. Can you reduce your shelf quantities and still make a positive impact on your sales? If so, do it. Take those items and back stock them.
By giving your store a different approach to theft prevention than just using Checkpoint tags, you will be better off. Reducing your shelf quantity is just another enhancement to your clothing security.
If you sell multiples of an item and need a large representation of this item, don’t sacrifice your sales through a shelf quantity reduction. However, those situations are generally more of an exception than a rule.
The right way is to look at your current sales and make a determination if you can make the reductions. Clothing security tags are very important to reducing your shrink losses on a permanent basis, but they are not the only way to go. By remembering that there are other enhancements that you can quickly make will only help you be proactive to specific issues as they arise.
If you notice that you are no longer shrinking an item, it is easy to increase the shelf quantities at that time.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint Tags, a Clothing Alarm, Clothing Security or Clothing Security Tags to put Security Tags on Clothes and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.
