Creating A Tidal Wave- Prevent Shoplfting

Laundry bottles are hard plastic, curved and relatively heavy. Finding a plausible solution to prevent shoplifting has not been easy for the general merchandise retailers who carry these items. That makes it that much easier for shoplifters, mostly within the drug trade, to abscond with these expensive and largely unprotected detergent bottles.
EAS labels can be peeled off the outside, and would damage the contents if affixed to the inside. Straight pin EAS tags have nowhere to go, and puncturing the bottle would cause it to leak- spoiling the soap inside.
There are, however, some retail anti theft devices, which are, designed more for clothing security than detergent but still work surprisingly well.
Alpha 2 Alarm and the Alpha 3 Alarm Alpha Security branded Cable Loks have a secured loop that wraps around the bottle’s handle.
The Cable Loks can utilize either the Alpha 2 Alarm or the Alpha 3 Alarm technology. Store employees will have a much better chance of being aware of the thefts before the damage can be done. The Alpha 2 Alarm will sound as the lock is tampered with. If a shoplifter doesn’t tamper with the lock to defeat it before they leave the store, the Cable Lok will stay armed. If they pass by the exit door towers and the Lok has an Alpha 3 Alarm, the lock will emit an audible alarm for up to ten minutes allowing the shoplifter to be noticed and the merchandise to be followed.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Brand, Save, Eliminate – Clothing Security Tags

When a boutique re-brands their clothing, they are usually taking other designer’s clothing and eliminating these logos and other identifying tags. The boutique will then sew in their own tags and logos; effectively creating their own in house brand of clothing and merchandise. Fortunately for these small boutiques, this re-branding process is a prefect time to add clothing security tags.
There are clothing security tags (Checkpoint Tags) that are sew in labels. These tags are a soft, paper label that is embedded inside a taffeta pouch. The labels are also customizable, which can further reinforce the boutiques brand and image. Since the tags are paper that can be seen through the taffeta pouch, any logo or other branding is easily printed onto the face of the tag.
The tags are highly efficient from a labor and payroll perspective as the labels are sewn into the garment at the same time the boutique’s labels and tags are sewn in. Thus they are saving time and effort.
Finally, the labels are harder for a shoplifter to find and remove. Most shoplifters are looking for a hard plastic tag on a sleeve or the bottom of a garment. These labels are placed on the inside of the garment, on the back with the brand label.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint Tags, a Clothing Alarm, Clothing Security or Clothing Security Tags to put Security Tags on Clothes and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

A Total Loss- Alpha Jewel Lok

It is actually pretty easy for an earring to get lost from its mate. Customers can get pairs of earring tangled trying to take one off of a rounder or peg hook. They can take them off the jewelry cards and accidentally drop one. Sometimes someone who has an uneven number of piercing but doesn’t want to pay for a full set can steal them. Traditional ways to prevent shoplifting are not effective against loosing a single earring.
Retailers are left with the reoccurring problem of what to do with the remaining earring.
Since the half a set can’t be sold at full price, a markdown is generally taken. These marked down earrings are rarely successful in being sold. It is purely a last chance effort to recover any money at all, instead of taking it as a total loss.
The Alpha Jewel Lok has a unique locking mechanism that is designed to protect the merchandise and not the packaging- in this case, the jewelry card.
The Alpha Security Alpha Jewel Lok affixes to the posts of the earrings, preventing removal from the jewelry card. This keeps the pairs together, preventing the need to prematurely mark down pairs of earrings.

Not Just The Company Profits- Employee Theft Investigation

For some employees, employee theft is limited to the company profits and assets. Since one of the biggest reasons an employee steals is because they feel the company owes them something, the company is the sole target of this “compensation”.
For a select few, employee theft is more about the act of stealing and the wants behind it. This can unfortunately degrade quickly past the point of just stealing from the company to stealing from fellow employees.
These employee theft investigations are harder to work, because there is a different pressure to solve the case.
When an employee has their personal possessions taken, it is more than just that possession that is taken. An employee takes the losses personally. They feel victimized and they feel let down and betrayed. An employee comes to work with an overall assumption that when they leave their belongings (coats, purses, cell phones) in a designated employee area, their belongings are protected and safe.
When something is stolen, they no longer feel that they are safe and that their employers are to blame for not maintaining that safety. The employees then take it upon themselves to protect their things.
This leads to broken trust and broken policies. Since the employee no longer trusts you, they will begin to stash their bags behind the POS where they can keep an eye on it, or take their cell phone on the floor.
Now you are faced with the employee theft investigation, broken policies, and you are a short leap away from other employees seeing what is going on and they too will begin to make up their own rules of governance.

A Noteworthy Collection- Alpha Jewel Lok

If you are selling collectable pins in your store, you might have had an issue with how to prevent shoplifting. Collectable pins have a very distinct resell market and are perfect gifts and vanity items. Due to their distinct merchandising format, pins can be hard to find security solutions for. The best way to merchandise them is on a card- hung on spinners or peg hooks.
The Alpha Security Alpha Jewel Lok was developed as a more successful solution, not just because the locks give maximum product and benefit denial, but because they are a great merchandising solution.
The low profile of the Alpha Jewel Lok has a minimal impact on merchandising space. The cards will still fit on the existing spinner racks or peg hooks without reducing the inventory count within the space.
The Alpha Jewel Lok can’t be seen from the front side of the card. That makes customers happy because they can look and feel every detail of the pins, and the vendor’s branding is not negatively impacted.
Retail anti theft devices have come a long way to protect jewelry products. By finding a unique way to prevent shoplifting, Alpha Security helps you keep your noteworthy collection of pins and accessories in stock and for sale.

Wardrobing Vs. Return Fraud- Wardrobing Retail

All wardrobing is a form of return fraud. That does not mean that all return fraud equates to wardrobing. Even though the use of Alpha Shark Tags is proven to reduce wardrobing retail, they should not be confused as a blanket solution to prevent all return fraud.
I had an employee who was secretly getting ready to start a new job with a different company. She needed business attire but didn’t have the money to completely replace her entire wardrobe. So she came up with a plan to save money and have the clothes she needed.
She started to buy the clothes from our store with her employee discount. They had the regular EAS tags and the wardrobing tags. At the purchase, the EAS tags came off, and the wardrobing tags stayed on.
She would then come back to the store with the empty shopping bag. She would walk around the store and put identical items of the clothes she purchased into the bag and then return them with her receipt.
The returns employee never thought otherwise because she had a receipt and the Alpha Shark tags were still attached. It wasn’t after we noticed that she was returning 100% of her purchases that we started to investigate. If we continued to assume the returns were legitimate only because of the tags we would have continued to loose thousands of dollars from these fraudulent returns.

Potential Ruin- Pre Employment Screening

Pre employment screening is designed to weed out the bad hires before they get passed the interviewing process. What we often overlook as hiring managers and owners is the far reaches of a bad employee. The costs that one employee can incur to your business can be potentially devastating.
In the most common ways, employee can cause inventory losses. They can steal, defraud, or simply be so oblivious to policy and procedure; they cause losses through their negligence and inattentive behaviors.
These financial implications create a tangible loss in your inventory, and an increase to your merchandise costs due to repurchasing your inventory to satisfy necessary stock levels.
The next level of damage comes in less tangible ways. A bad apple employee can create devastating issue with morale. The worse your employees feel, the less productive they become, and the more they turn off customers who will go some place else to shop.
Once it starts, it is difficult and can sometimes take years or massive employee turnover to remedy. Costing you money in lost sales and increased training costs for rehires. It also takes away your productive time as you are spending more time dealing with employee issues.
Are you innovative or have proprietary advantages? Don’t think you are invulnerable to this sort of attack. Restaurants that have a “secret sauce” have had employees steal the recipe so they can copy it or sell it for their own profit eliminating the proprietary advantage the company once had.
Understanding that these employees can ultimately ruin a business beyond repair puts a pre employment screening in perspective from a financial viewpoint.

Who Does That Kind of Thing? – Wardrobing Retail

Special occasion merchandise, like prom or cocktail dresses, is one of the biggest wardrobing targets. Next in line come accessories. You can’t have a gorgeous dress without being properly accessorized, you know. Finally comes work outfits and suiting. Job prospects will purchase a high quality suit for a job interview to impress the potential employer. Guess what happens if they don’t get the job?
You have the fashionista that is desperately trying to keep up with the latest trends, the high school prom go-er who wants a beautiful dress, but can’t afford it, and the ladies of society who wouldn’t be caught dead wearing the same thing twice.
Whether through society’s pressure or simply an internal desire to be better than the next, wardrobing is a way to stay ahead of the curb. In fact one in six women admit that they have done this before. One in eleven of those women do this on repeated occasions.
Many of these women will go to great lengths just to keep the merchandise in pristine condition so they can be assured of getting their full refund later. Since so few retailers use Alpha Shark Tags as a deterrent, it is easy to get away with. That just adds to these women’s ability to rationalize what they are doing and disregard that this is another form of refund fraud.

Keeping Up With The Shoplifters- Alpha 3 Alarm

Using EAS tags to prevent shoplifting is a statistically sound prevention technique. Time and time again, retailers who use these retail anti theft devices see a significant reduction in inventory losses.
That does not mean that shoplifters simply walk away never to bee seen or heard from again. What we find is that shoplifters are continually trying to beat the system. Over the years since EAS was first used, shoplifter have spent their time trying to thwart these tags.
Shoplifters will tamper with the tags to defeat them. They also might risk setting off the alarm and leaving with the merchandise even though they might be noticed while heading out the door.
Either way, each time a shoplifter develops a new plan, there must be new retail anti theft devices designed to thwart them.
Alpha Security has come up with a different approach to in response to shoplifter’s continual attempts to defeat EAS tagging products. They developed the Alpha 3 Alarm. This is an EAS tag that has an extra deterrent for shoplifting.
The Alpha 3 Alarm added an audible alarm directly to the EAS tag that sounds when the tag passes through the store’s exit doors without being deactivated.

More Than One Holiday- Wardrobing

Wardrobing is a strong focus throughout the November/ December holiday season. Because of the strong presence of holiday parties, events and gatherings, an unfortunate number of consumers will attempt wardrobing their purchases. It is a way fro them to offset their gift buying or need for multiple outfits for multiple events.
What we are not focusing on is the lesser holidays that occur almost every month throughout the year.
Do you carry a special line of green for St. Patrick’s Day? How about fireworks themed or red, white and blue apparel for the Fourth of July? I would bet that you do.
Unfortunately, buyer’s remorse can often settle in with these holiday themed clothing items. Once the excitement of the day is passed, many shoppers realize the limits of the item they purchased. They know they would feel silly with a St. Pats shirt on in the middle of August, or a Halloween outfit in April. Even something as universal as a heart for Valentine’s day might seem out of place a month later.
It is then that these shoppers start to think about returning their purchase to get a refund. Since these holiday items are generally sold within a short span of time, the buyer would be within even a 30-day refund policy.
Using Alpha Shark Tags will help eliminate wardrobing holiday specific returns to your store.
