Implications Beyond Your Store –Wardrobing

Wardrobing is not just about the customers who are in your store. It is also about customers who do any kind of online or mail order shopping. I never thought about those ramifications until I was presented with an unfortunate situation as a customer.
I recently bought a dress. Since I made the purchase online I never worried that the dress may have been involved in any wardrobing before I bought it. I didn’t realize that some companies send merchandise straight from a store, instead of out of a warehouse.
Once I received the dress in the mail, I went to try it on and there was a huge smudge of makeup all inside the dress. Ugh. Since I really wanted the dress and the discount would cover dry cleaning, I went with option number two.
One of two things had happened. The make up came from a customer trying the dress on, oblivious to the damage she did, or it came from a customer who was wardrobing.
Either way, the company lost out. They were shorted the discount that they gave me. Additionally, they lost me as a customer (and all the money I am spending elsewhere) because it was not worth the potential hassle to order anything from them again.

Maybe It Is Time- Background Checks

So often when we (as business owners and managers) think of running background checks for potential employees, we do so with the mindset that it is for our benefit. We rarely stop and think about pre employment screening from the perspective of a new hire.

Wardrobing tags have actually been around for a while; they just haven’t seen much press until now.

If for some reason, the background check company will not back their work, or pushes the liability back to you, you need to go elsewhere.  That should be an enormous red flag that these so called background check experts may not actually be in the business of providing accurate background checks.

Creating a Cash Overage- Internal Theft

 It was by chance that we discovered our latest internal theft case. We had just received a shipment of a particular new product. A few days later, we were out of stock on that item, but we didn’t see the sales we should have on it.
After beginning to review the journal tape, we noticed that at the end of the day there had been several voided cash transactions. Many of which had involved this new item. When we started to suspect internal theft, we began to review journal tapes from other days. 
We noticed a pattern. A particular closing manager would have several cash transactions voided out just before store closing. Some of the transactions were ones that had occurred earlier in the day before she even got to work.
We watched video from the cash office during her closing shifts and discovered that she would take money out of the tills and put it in her purse.
She admitted that she would search the journal tapes for cash transactions and then post void them out. She would take that dollar amount in cash for herself-, which is why there wasn’t a cash shortage. Because the customer was leaving with the merchandise the shortage came from the inventory losses.
In essence she had eliminated the sales causing the inventory to leave the store unaccounted for. Because the sales were originally paid for in cash, the transaction void caused unaccounted for cash in the register. The employee took the cash for her own thinking that she had eliminated the trail to her employee theft.
