Cheaply Made, Cheaply Defeated- Security Tags On Clothes

In order for security tags on clothes to be effective, you have to have a certain level of quality in your clothing security resources and tools. Some retailer’s use cheaply made and cheaply sold clothing security, instead of Checkpoint Tags.
If I was to look closely at these cheap clothing security tags, I would be able to see the actual seam in the middle of the hard shell. On some of them, the seams are actually breaking apart.
Any shoplifter with an ounce of persistence could easily pry the two sides apart with a screwdriver or other tool. Once the two sides are pried apart, the shoplifter has access to the inner locking mechanism, which is what holds the pin in place on your clothing. Once the pin is removed, these clothing security tags have effectively been rendered completely worthless.
Checkpoint tags have a guarantee of quality. They know that if you cannot rely on their product for your clothing security needs, you will spend your money elsewhere. That is why when they seal the clamshell section of their tags together, they do it so it is a permanent seal that will not come undone, or be easily pried apart. Just remember, if the tags are cheaply made, they will cheaply be defeated.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint Tags, a Clothing Alarm, Clothing Security or Clothing Security Tags to put Security Tags on Clothes and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Check and Balance System- Internal Theft

In order to reduce internal theft from embezzlement maintain a check and balance system for everything you do. Have a periodic audit or reconciliation, even if it is once a month. Have someone else do the audits, someone who was not involved in the transactions.
Embezzlers have spent hours figuring out your systems and their inefficiencies. They have been there long enough to know what your hot points are and what things are routinely let slide. From there they devise a plan that works around what you watch and what you don’t.
They are especially difficult to detect because the employees that embezzle are ones that have been working the system for years. In fact, because they have been around for years, they are often the ones that have been promoted to jobs with more responsibility and access, and are in a trusted management position.
Frequently, we catch on to these embezzlers because of an employee tip. Another common way to unearth embezzlement is by opening up a blanket employee theft investigation. That is one where we take a look at all of the employees and check for signs that might be a red flag.
We can also catch on if we notice an employee that is living beyond their means. If they are spending money that you know you don’t pay them enough to have, they might be supplementing their income elsewhere- like from your coffers.

A Better Fit- Retail Anti Theft Devices

A particular group of stores was using the Alpha Spider Wrap as the primary retail anti theft devices to secure several of their boxed products.
What they were asking me was to know was if they could use the same Alpha Security Alpha Spider Wrap for protection for their boxes of fragrances and colognes. Since the Alpha Spider Wraps are designed for a wide range of boxes, this business owner wanted to try and save some money by using their existing stock of retail anti theft devices.
Even though it sounded like a good idea in theory, I cautioned against it. These retail anti theft devices are much bigger than what will work effectively for the significantly smaller fragrance boxes.
I recommended using the Keeper Boxes, also designed by Alpha Security. There are several styles to choose from, and the Keeper Boxes are designed specifically for fragrances and cologne products.
By using a smaller box to prevent shoplifting, the retail anti theft devices are actually more effective. An ill-fitting protection device is easier to defeat, and nobody wants that. Even though the Keeper boxes will be an additional investment, the return on the investment will balance out.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Are Your Profits Tied Up? – Clothing Security

It is not uncommon for retailers to use bulky cable and chain locks to secure entire fixtures of expensive clothes, like jackets or coats. The problem is that these chain locks are often extremely sensitive and are prone to setting off the clothing alarm by very little movement of the product.
That means that an employee needs to be present at all times to detach an item for a customer. When an employee is not there, customers are often reluctant to try anything on, much less to take their time to track down an employee just to look at one on.
This is probably the most common area that retailers are challenged with finding a balance. They need to balance the use of clothing security with the shopping habits and needs of their customers.
When your merchandise is tied up to the point that it is unshoppable to the average customers then your profits on those items are tied up as well. Literally. It has been proven over and over that when you eliminate access to your merchandise, sales go down. When you give customers the ability to touch, feel, and try on clothes at their leisure, sales of those items increase. When the sales increase, so does the profit.

The Cost Of Being Social- Employee background Checks

For some employees, Social media is an outlet for their personal expressions. In spite of their need to over share personal information or their questionable behaviors, many in the job pool believe that their personal lives should remain private. Any digging into social media sites would therefore constitute a violation of their privacy. This puts potential employers in a precarious position if they decide to use social media as a part of their pre employment screening.
With privacy and security controls available on such social media websites and networks, it should reasonably fall to the responsibility of a job candidate to keep their sites private and block public viewing. If they do not want the Internet documentation of their activities, they should take the responsibility to maintain their privacy controls.
In response to the business need for a social networking arena there are sites specifically designed and created for the working individual. These sites give potential employers unofficial employee background checks that are allowable for hiring purposes.
Since the site is to be shared within the professional community, instead of a personal network of friends and family, employers are welcomed more freely to investigate through those networks. The down side to using these for informal pre employment screening is that the job applicant puts the information on the site. It is at their discretion what is posted and what is omitted.
While the debate continues to surround social media as a viable way to conduct employee background checks, it is probably best to have a more traditional pre employment screening weed out your job candidates.

Oh So Simple

Technology amazes me. Looking at the world and seeing the possibilities, information and access available literally, at our fingertips, is quite a phenomenon. But does basic human nature change at the same pace as technology? Maybe! I am afraid that the need to prevent shoplifting still remains.
Yet there are still innovations that have nothing to do with a computer chip, “the cloud” or an app that can completely change your life. They are simple by design, and at the forefront of leading technology. Some of these innovations are changes to retail anti theft devices.
Alpha Security, who is a trusted industry name in retail anti theft devices, is at the forefront of innovation and change. This is because Alpha Security products are reliable, and also because they simply work. Take a look at the Alpha Jewel Lok. It is a simple lock designed to disallow product access. You cannot take a piece of jewelry off of a card with an Alpha Jewel Lok in place. This leaves a shoplifter or dishonest employee with only the option to steal the jewelry with the Alpha Jewel Lok still attached and set the alarm off.
The last thing a shoplifter wants is to be noticed, so setting off an alarm is usually not an option. They will end up leaving the jewelry behind.

Nice Nails- Alpha Shark Tags

At one time, we employed a door guard whose job it was to greet customers, answer alarm activations, and to validate returns coming into the store. One day he told me about a girl that came in to return some nail polish. As she showed my employee the receipt and the bottle she was returning, told her that the color was really pretty and almost like the color she was wearing on her nails. It was a classic case of wardrobing.
Now this girl quickly changed her story and backtracked saying that she wasn’t going to return the nail polish, but she knew she was caught.
Too bad it isn’t always that easy for a retailer to know if their product is used in wardrobing.
Even though it is rare to catch a customer actually wearing the clothes they are attempting to return, Alpha Shark Tags are the next best thing. These plastic red tags help to reinforce your store’s return policy. Because the red tags simply can not be removed or reattached without showing signs of tampering, it is a fool proof way for your employees to determine if the clothing can be returned or not.
Alpha Shark Tags may not be able to tell you what the customer did with the clothes after they left the store, but they can decrease the likelihood that they were worn and then returned.

Four Good Reasons- Alpha Security

Known for their innovative product lines of retail anti theft devices, Alpha Security has a four-pronged approach to how they prevent shoplifting.
The first is to provide the utmost level of protection for all of your high shrink products. Let’s face it; if retail anti theft devices aren’t reliable, there is no point in having them.
Secondly, they need to be easy and simple to use. Time and time again I see great plans to stop shrink that are so complicated to execute that the plan dies before it even has a chance to work. When a plan or product is simple to use and doesn’t disrupt the normal flow of business employees will execute more completely and customers won’t have a negative shopping impact.
Along the same lines, if the retail anti theft devices are an eye sore, they are not conducive to maintain customer friendly displays and shopping aesthetics.
Finally, these tools need to provide value. The cost should be offset by the decrease in inventory losses within the first few months.
Because Alpha Security focuses on these four points, you benefit immediately by their inclusion to your retail security.

The Height of Fashion- Alpha Shark Tags

When someone is wardrobing retail pieces of merchandise, they are buying an item to wear one time and then return to get their money back. This is all to frequent with special occasion items (for example) where the wearer can’t justify spending the money on the item, but still wants the latest fashion, or at the very least a better item than what they can afford.
They keep the price tags on, being careful not to spill on or otherwise soil the merchandise, and return the item soon after the event. The justification comes from feeling like they gave back an item that is as good as new, so the retailer could not possibly be out anything.
Since they have taken such good care of the item, they feel like they are free to continue this practice of wardrobing to stay at the height of fashion. Yes, in some circles, it is still taboo to wear the same thing one more than one occasion. There is a social pressure to have the latest looks, or at least a different one than what was worn to the last soiree.
By using the alpha shark tags, you can stop this cycle of wardrobing. It is extremely difficult to stay at the height of fashion when you have a large and unsightly security tag affixed to the center of your blouse or special occasion outfit.

Floating a Deposit- Employee Theft

Many years ago it was standard practice to write a check for everything. Credit was an exception used for major purchases, or perhaps a special in- house financing in a department store. The down side to writing checks was that they took so long to process, that bad checks were an extremely prominent and an easy form of employee theft and fraud.
It was something that we always watched out for, employees who would write a bad check. There were even employees who would kite/ float checks. It was a simple process, but one that took dedication to maintain the process.
An employee would write a check and get cash. They would not have enough money in their bank account to cover the dollar amount of the check. So the cash they got from the check would get deposited into their account. Deposits would post faster than it would take the check to clear, however, they still needed to cover the bad check they had written.
They would write a second check and get cash. Then they would deposit that cash into their accounts. This cash would be enough to cover the first check, but not the second. So they would have to do it again, and again…
This would be a way to supplement their account in between paychecks. Once they had their paycheck deposited, the paycheck would cover the bad checks that had been written.
We don’t see employee theft or employee theft investigations for bad checks these days. What we do see is the same process with deposits. Cash is taken out of a deposit and cash from the next day’s deposit covers it up. They will take the money out of each deposit until they can make up the difference with their paychecks.
