The Name Game- Pre Employment Screening

Criminal background checks should be an essential part of a company’s standard pre employment screening. The results can be a red flag for the company so they can make a better-informed decision about the candidate they want to hire.
Every time my brother applies for a new job, he dreads the part where the potential employer runs criminal background checks. Mostly because he knows that his search results will show up with a laundry list of convictions from crimes committed in various states. The problem is, there is someone else living in a different state that has the same name and date of birth as my brother. This other person is the true owner of the criminal history that shows up on my brother’s criminal background checks.
He first found out about this problem after interviewing for a job and then receiving a rejection letter in the mail from this company. They stated that he did not divulge his record to them on the application, and based on the convictions he was ineligible for hire.
He then had to go through several other steps to prove that the records were not his and he had never even been to the states in which the arrests had happened. The proof came from the information found on his driver’s license such as race, hair and eye color, and the photo. Once matched to the mug shots and the arrest records, my brother was cleared and offered the position.

Two or More Years- Employee Theft

Embezzlement is a nasty form of employee theft. It is one of the hardest to detect in small businesses, and yet causes some of the biggest dollar losses out of all of the ways an employee can steal.
It is especially difficult to detect because the employees that embezzle are ones that have been working the system for years. In fact, because they have been around for years (generally two or more), they are often the ones that have been promoted to jobs with more responsibility and access, and are in a trusted management position.
Frequently, we catch on to these embezzlers because of an employee tip. We can also catch on if we notice an employee that is living beyond their means. If they are spending money that you know you don’t pay them enough to have, they might be supplementing their income elsewhere- like from your coffers.
Embezzlers have spent hours figuring out your systems and their inefficiencies. They have been there long enough to know what your hot points are and what things are routinely let slide. From there they devise a plan that works around what you watch and what you don’t.
In order to reduce employee theft from embezzlement maintain a check and balance system for everything you do. Have a periodic audit or reconciliation, even if it is once a month. Have someone else do the audits, someone who was not involved in the transactions. The same goes for accounts receivable, and accounts payable. When the same person controls both, and you have no checkpoints in place, you open the door wide open to be taken advantage of.

Do A Spot Check- Security Tags on Clothes

When you use security tags on clothes, as owners and managers we often focus our efforts on compliance. Did we tag all of the clothing? Are the Checkpoint Tags in the proper location on the garment? Do we have a new item that we want to enhance our clothing security with?
What we often forget about is how to train our employees in responding to alarms generated by the clothing security tags. If you had a bag in your hand, with an item inside that had a clothing security tag on it, and walked out the exit door triggering the alarm, what would your employees do?
Would they come over to deactivate the tags? Would they validate the receipt? Would they simply ignore the alarm and continue on with what they are doing?
That is where training your employees on the expectations are critical. It doesn’t matter how many times an alarm goes off, if no one responds, all of your time and effort to tag the merchandise is rendered useless.
More often than not, the reason why employees disregard the alarms is because they do not feel comfortable with how to respond. By properly training them and showing them your own example of how to respond, your alarm activations will be much more productive.

Who Do You Want? – Criminal Background Checks

I was looking to hire a new Loss Prevention employee for one of my stores. Another manager had a great customer service situation at a competitor and had recommended this particular employee to me. I had them come in and fill out an application before I made any interviewing decisions. Even without a formal criminal background check, I had a concern with this applicant.
On his application, he put down that he had a DUI a few years ago. While I am glad that he admitted to his charge, I was still left with questions about his judgment. Is this someone with a drinking problem, or just had a momentary lapse in judgment? Can I rely on them in a high impact situation, or to have consistency in their day-to-day behaviors?
I had to wonder if I would find anything else if I ran a criminal background check. In my experience, people will admit to the lowest denominator they think they can get away with. Employees and shoplifters only admit to a fraction of what they actually stole. Other criminals will downplay the number of times they committed a crime. Do they really think that they were caught the very first time they did something wrong? No, they probably had done the action over and over until it was so blatant that they got caught.
I wouldn’t take an admission on a job application as an excuse not to conduct more thorough pre employment screening- especially when it comes to criminal background checks.

Open Merchandising- Prevent Shoplifting

Each time a retailer tries to lock up their high theft merchandise behind a case, or some other form of employee control, sales go down. It has been proven time and time again from every product assortment and specialty niche that has undergone a locking solution.
That pushes retailers back to the drawing board of how to protect their product and prevent theft at the hands of shoplifters and employees. In order to not create a negative impact on sales, high theft products need an open merchandising solution.
An open merchandising solution entails a customer’s ability to pick the product up at their leisure. It allows them to read labels, feel fabrics or materials, and inspect an item up close for quality. When the customer feels like they have gathered enough information to make a purchasing decision, they buy the item.
Some customers are turned off by the prospect of needing an employee to assist them. Either they do not want to endure a barrage of questions about what they are looking for, or the customer simply does not have the time to track down an employee to get the item for them. Open merchandising allows the customer to take control of their purchase.

But Is It Illegal? –Wardrobing Retail

Wardrobing retail is a highly unethical process. Whether it is from the intent to wardrobe from the beginning, or an after thought from an outfit worn with buyer’s remorse it is morally wrong to return worn merchandise.
The problem for retailers is that it might not actually be illegal. There are some forms of return fraud that is very clearly illegal, however wardrobing is not one of them. Most state legislation only says that a retailer must post their return policy in a prominent location.
Additionally, there are still a fair amount of retailers that welcome back refunds of merchandise in any condition. That makes it even harder to form actual legislation that the majority of all retailers can agree on. Would you be happy if state laws outlined exactly how your return policy should read?
That leaves it up to the individual retailers to create their own return policy as well as finding clear-cut ways to discourage and reduce wardrobing within their stores.
Some retailers have found success through having an “all sales are final” policy. Simple and effective; no one can abuse a policy that has no margin for exception. As this can potentially alienate a large, honest customer base, maybe a less strict policy can be utilized. Maybe a 30-day policy would work, or implementing Alpha Shark Tags on all of your special occasion items can be effective in your situation.

Stay In Control- Prevent Shoplifting

Retail anti theft devices are the most notable and recognizable ways to prevent shoplifting, but did you know that basic retail operations and standards could play just as important part? What few retailers are aware of is that even with retail anti theft devices in place a store that does not follow its operational protocol is still at risk.
A shoplifter thrives on disorganization, unattended corners of a store, and a lack of employee presence. If you do not keep your store, clean, organized, and recovered promptly, a shoplifter can slip by undetected. If you have a table of jeans that are thrown about and disorganized, you have no way of knowing if something is missing. A table of carefully folded and laid out jeans is more likely to be noticed if one, or several, jeans are missing.
The same goes for high theft items that can be taken to an isolated corner. Sometimes moving a shelf or a table can create a better sightline for your employees to see what is going on. Similarly, your employees need to engage all customers. If they ignore your paying customers, you can be rest assured that they are ignoring the shoplifters too.

What Happened There? –Wardrobing

I recently bought a dress. Since I made the purchase online I never worried that the dress may have been involved in any wardrobing before I bought it. Unfortunately, once I received the dress in the mail, I went to try it on and there was a huge smudge of makeup all inside the dress. Ugh.
Now I can’t even begin to tell you the range of thoughts that went through my mind, but the first thing I did was to hop on the phone with customer service. Sure enough, this dress had been shipped from a store, and not from a warehouse or distribution center. Even better, this was the last one in my size.
I was given two options, return the dress or keep the dress with an extra ten percent discount. Since I really wanted the dress and the discount would cover dry cleaning, I went with option number two.
Because the dress came from an actual store, one of two things happened. The make up came from a customer trying the dress on, oblivious to the damage she did, or it came from a customer who was wardrobing.
Either way, the company lost out. They were shorted the discount that they gave me. Additionally, they lost me as a customer (and all the money I am spending elsewhere) because it was not worth the potential hassle to order anything from them again.

No Sales, No Profit- Employee Theft

In my latest employee theft investigation, I had a manager that was stealing cash. It took us a while before we figured out what was going on because we didn’t show any cash losses on our daily till reports.
What we were showing losses on was for inventory. Progressively, our inventory costs were going up and our sales were taking a minor decline.
It was by chance that we started the employee theft investigation. We had just received a shipment of a particular new product. A few days later, we were out of stock on that item, but we didn’t see the sales we should have on it.
After beginning to review the journal tape, we noticed that at the end of the day there had been several voided cash transactions. Many of which had involved this new item.
When we started to suspect employee theft, we began to review journal tapes from other days. We noticed a pattern. A particular closing manager would have several cash transactions voided out just before store closing. Some of the transactions were ones that had occurred earlier in the day before she even got to work.
We watched video from the cash office during her closing shifts and discovered that she would take money out of the tills and put it in her purse.
After gathering several weeks of evidence we sat her down for an interview. She admitted that she would search the journal tapes for cash transactions and then post void them out. She would take that dollar amount in cash for herself-, which is why there wasn’t a cash shortage. Because the customer was leaving with the merchandise the shortage came from the inventory losses.

Didn’t See That- Alpha Nano Gate

I never worried about trying to prevent shoplifting out of the back office areas in my stores. So it never crossed my mind to install and Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate outside the office.
In a few of my stores, I have employed a visual manager. Their job was to keep signage up to date, and create visual displays using new and popular merchandise.
Since they routinely took multiple products off the sales floor to carry out their job responsibilities, no one ever questioned why they had merchandise in their hands. I guess we should have been concerned because they were taking the product back to their office instead of keeping the items out on the sales floor.
What we didn’t realize, until after it was too late, was that this manager had been stealing merchandise for years. It was only after they left to pursue anther job, did we uncover the massive quantity of discarded price tags, retail anti theft devices, and labels stashed back in their office.
They used the access given with their position to cover up the extra product they were taking home. We should have had a policy that all merchandise stays out of the office, and installed an Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate to enforce that policy.
