Ignoring Your Gut Feelings-Employee Theft

A small business owner was talking to me about his concerns with one of his employees. There were major discrepancies with his store bank accounts and his accounts receivable never seemed to balance out. He suspected that something wasn’t right, and there was only one employee who was responsible for those accounts. Even though he didn’t outright say the words, he hinted that he was concerned about employee theft.
All of the arrows seemed to point in one very obvious direction- this employee was stealing. The owner, however, did not want to believe that was the case. The employee had been with him for about seven years, and he trusted her completely. That was why she had been given a position with so much responsibility and access to financial means.
This employee was leaving the company and then moving across the country. They had been planning this move for about six or seven months at this point, and had just a few short weeks left. Even though this owner had suspected for a while that this employee theft was going on, he just now wanted to do something about it.
I let him know that whatever he decided to do, he needed to do it quickly. Employee theft cases are much harder to prosecute and recover money from if the employee has left the company. Many judges will view this sort of employee theft investigation as a form of retaliation due to the employees notice to leave the company.

Double Up- Prevent Shoplifting

My store apprehended a shoplifter recently using a rather unusual method to conceal his merchandise. If it wasn’t for our retail anti theft devices to prevent shoplifting, we might not have discovered what was going on.
This was a situation where we didn’t catch on to this particular shoplifter right away. We actually had several interactions with him before we realized what was going on.
He came into our store and used a wheelchair with one of our handheld shopping basket in his lap. He would go about his business and come to the register to pay for the items. No matter how diligent my cashiers were when they rang him up; the EAS alarm was set off when he left.
We always double-checked for retail anti theft devices accidentally left on his paid for items, but could not find any. After about a month of this happening every time he came to shop, we started to get suspicious that something else was going on.
We watched as he came in one day and realized that he had picked up two shopping baskets, not one. At first we thought they had just stuck together, until we saw inside the baskets. As it turned out, he was hiding merchandise in one of the baskets, stacking the second one on top and adding more merchandise that he would pay for. When he left, he would leave with all of the extra merchandise sandwiched between our shopping baskets- unpaid for.

Make the Change- Pre Employment Screening

Pre employment screening is not just about conducting formal employee background checks. Pre employment screening is also about how to streamline your hiring process to get the best-qualified and most productive employee each time you hire.
While employee background checks are absolutely essential to the hiring process, and can help you avoid more serious damage done by a thieving or mischievous employee, there are some ways to do a pre employment screening that keeps them away from the applicant pool to begin with.
Most businesses rely on a standard application process. Computer generated and screened applications are common in larger businesses with more resources. Smaller businesses still rely on paper applications, since it is easy to purchase a pack of pre-made ones from the local office supply store.
What if you started streamlining your application process and allowed applicants to give a better look at their capabilities. A recent report told the story of a company hiring a marketing coordinator. In a generic job posting, several hundred applications were received, many of who did not even meet the basic job requirements of experience or education.
When the same job posted with a requirement that a sample of a marketing flyer was included with their application, only twelve candidates applied.
Not every open retail position can have a job posting this specific, but there are ways to incorporate these tests of skill. Ask a potential employee to “sell” you an item, or solve a fictitious customer problem. It can give you a better insight into their skill level and their potential dedication to the job.

Non Inventory Store Losses- Clothing Security

I had a recent discussion with a small business that did not know how to look for clothing losses since they did not conduct an inventory. They guessed that they were being targeted by shoplifters, partly due to the frequency of people entering their store and not buying anything, and partly because they did not use any electronic article surveillance systems either.
We knew that in order to solve the problem, we needed to have some ways to identify what kinds of thefts were taking place, and what kinds of clothing protection would be effective to stop the inventory losses for happening.
We started by taking a look at the store’s sales reports. We broke the sales down by departments and compared them to last month’s sales and last year’s. We noticed which departments were behind on their sales goals for the year, and which ones did not increase compared to last year. I explained that if they did not have the right products to sell, then they would not have a chance at meeting or exceeding their sales goals.
Next we looked for signs of theft- specifically for torn of clothing tags. We found several caches of them behind the mirrors in the fitting rooms. We also found them under some shelves in an unattended corner of the store.

Plug And Play- Alpha Security

The Alpha Nano Gate is a smaller version of the cumbersome EAS towers most retailers are using to manage their retail anti theft devices. It is also infinitely easier and more cost effective for a small retailer or specialty shop to use.
Conventional EAS towers are maintained under service contracts, require complicated hard wiring to install, and need to be tuned and service regularly to ensure that they are functioning properly.
The Alpha Nano Gate literally is plugged in and ready to go. Without a need for a service contract, bulky wiring, or tuning, it is easy to see why the Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate won an award in the economic efficiency category.
The small design is easily installed with six screws and a battery to back up the system in case of power failure or intentional tampering.  This design makes it easy to be installed into the smaller entryways often found in specialty boutiques and locally owned retail establishments.
When you are a small retailer, you are constantly on the look out for ways to reduce your overhead. Finding a cost effective way to prevent shoplifting is beneficial in not only reducing your operating costs, but to also increase your revenue through maximizing inventory availability.

Surf The Web –Employee Background Checks

After careful evaluation of the pros and cons, you have decided to conduct pre employment screening on all of your potential employees. To save some money, you decided to forego using a background check company for these employee background checks.
You figured that just about anything can be found by searching the internet with a little bit of digging on your own. That’s what a background check company charges for anyway, isn’t it- their time to dig up information- to surf the web?
Well, there are two missing parts to the puzzle that may cause you some problems. The first concern is how far you are going to go to get these histories and employee background checks- especially if this applicant has moved around at all.
The next concern is what happens if you dig up incorrect information on a potential candidate and subsequently decline a job offer to a candidate based on those findings. You (your company) can be held liable for that information and can be sued by that candidate for slander and other offenses in a court of law. Would you know how to fix that information if the situation came up?
This is the larger part of what you pay a background check company for. They are responsible for the accuracy of the pre employment screening they conduct. If there is a discrepancy, this company has the legal obligation to have it corrected in a timely manner.

Building Your Career- Pre Employment Screening

Looking for a new job to build your career can be just as frustrating as it is for employers to find a suitable candidate for their open positions. This is partly due to changes in how both employers and employees approach interviews and hiring in general. Pre employment screening still plays an important part in the process, but is left to be one of the last steps before a candidate is finalized.
There was a recent survey conducted by a popular employment website. It went through many of the pitfalls employers were coming up against in finding new, qualified candidates. The employers interviewed spoke of candidates not showing up for interviews, declining positions after they had accepted them, and some candidates not even showing up for their first day of work with no communication.
Then the survey flipped around to interview the candidates who had actually applied for posted positions. It was surprising to find out that the amount of disconnect from employees communicating with employers, there was a major lack of communication from employers back to the actual employees.
Many employers, who received applications, sent out an automatically generated email stating that the application was under review. That was pretty consistent, it was in additional communication that things started going downhill. Of those received applications, very few were notified by the company that they had not been picked for an interview. Of the ones that had been picked, even fewer candidates were actually notified that they did not receive the job.

One, Two, Three- Internal Theft

It is not uncommon in an internal theft situation that more than one method of theft is uncovered. In one particular case, we had two employees working together, or so we thought.
One employee would ring up the other employee. Upon review, not all of the merchandise brought to the POS had been sold. Instead of all ten items being sold, only one or two would be and the rest of the items would walk out the door. This would cause a shortage of eight items, and of course the items that were sold were the lowest dollar amount out of all of them.
We later discovered that the extra items were then refunded for store credit. In essence, we were getting the hit by the theft of the item, and then the refund of the item.
Had we stopped our investigation at the pass offs at the register, we would have missed the refunds. We also would have missed that there was a third employee conducting the refunds, because they knew the product was stolen.
Once we started observing these employees, we found out that all three of them were actually stealing product and passing off inventory to the others.
Without a thorough employee theft investigation, we would never have realized just how far the losses were going. The internal theft we started with was an important stepping stone to see how the entire puzzle would unfold.

Don’t Discount Organized Retail Crime- Prevent Shoplifting

An old colleague recently sent me a news article about his city’s crackdown on repeat shoplifting offenders. In the article, the shoplifters had been stealing so much merchandise that they had enough to sell to local restaurants and corner stores.
As I read further into the article, I realized that I recognized one of the names. It was a habitual shoplifter that we had been trying to apprehend almost ten years ago. This particular shoplifter was stealing from several locations and would sometime return the items without receipt- using multiple aliases to get around our refund system.
Eventually we did apprehend her and ban her from our stores in addition to having her prosecuted. I guess that didn’t mean much to her, since she has continued with her life of crime all of these years.
What we didn’t understand at the time was that this shoplifter we had assumed was just a small time problem, was actually a major part of a local crime ring. Her entire life was dedicated to stealing product from retailers to later resell to other local businesses. She set herself up as a local distributor with lower than average pricing- making it an attractive low cost solution for these local businesses.
