Running Away From Your Problems- Employee Background Checks

While you would hope that an applicant who has had several addresses- in particular in several different counties or states had moved for valid reasons- such as job transfers with previous employers, not every move by every applicant is that legitimate. Frequently, employee background checks turn up criminal convictions for potential employees who have moved because they are trying to cover up previous mistakes.
Some job candidates with a criminal past fear they will be misjudged by their mistakes and look to start a new life somewhere else. Others are trying to escape neighborhoods or groups of people that will continue to drag them down the road of criminal activity.
Some cannot find employment or opportunities where they have been convicted and go someplace else (out of state family an friends) who can help them shed their criminal pasts and stigmas.
Whatever the reason, without an in depth pre employment screening process in place, these criminal convictions can be easily overlooked. You are then at the mercy of the applicant to provide you with completely honest answers to their criminal past.
If the applicant is running away or otherwise trying to move on from their past, they are less likely to be completely honest and readily divulge that information to you.
Based off of length of time since the last conviction, or type of criminal conduct, you may still choose to offer employment, even though there was a history found during your employee background checks. That being said, having the full history to know that the last conviction really was ten years ago, and not last month is crucial to making an informed decision.

Rebranding and Security Solutions- Clothing Security Tags

When most people think of clothing security tags, the hard plastic buttons and pins generally come to mind. For retailers who are rebranding their merchandise, clothing security tags are the anti theft labels that can be sewn into a seam of a garment.
When the retailer rebrands their merchandise, they will typically take out the existing labels and sew in their own ones. For a shirt, this would be in the back of the neckline or collar. This is a perfect time and place to add sew- in clothing security tags.
These tags are actually a soft/ paper label that is encased in a small pocket of material. The pockets are close to the size of a quarter. The softer pocket material around the anti theft label helps reduce any discomfort a customer might experience when trying the shirt on.
This is really a nice way to incorporate clothing security into your rebranding process. Adding the pocket with your brand label really take no more time than just adding in your brand label. The pocket is a secure way to add clothing security with minimal time and effort on your part, or that of your employees. Best of all, the pocket is removed after being purchased by the customer once they get home, with a pair of common household shears.

Unlock The Code- Alpha Security

Alpha Security uses many different kinds of retail anti theft devices in their efforts to prevent shoplifting and reduce inventory shrink. While there are many retail anti theft devices, Alpha Security wanted retailers to be able to use a universal key to detach them. This would limit confusion at the point of sale and ensure speedy checkout, as cashiers would not have to flip between multiple keys to detach multiple styles of retail anti theft devices.
The problem comes from multiple retailers using the same kind of detacher key. Shoplifters are starting to steal the detacher keys and use them for their own theft purposes. We are even seeing employees accidentally lose their key and shoplifters finding them and using them.
Needless to say, it would be unbearably expensive for a small business to have to reinvest in an entirely new security system just because of one lost or stolen detacher key. Alpha Security, realizing that this was starting to arise as a major issue, immediately began to develop a new key: The S3verify Key and devices.
Now, these keys and retail anti theft devices have a store specific code. Similar to a chip encoded car key, without the proper key, the locks will not open. A stolen key will erase itself preventing a shoplifter to use it.

Beyond The Return Velocity- Alpha Shark Tags

Return velocity is a term that takes very minimal data a shoots out a number to help a retailer quantify their returns. Basically, it takes an individual customer’s account and determines how much they return based solely on the amount they purchase and the amount they return. There are no other variables like an attached Alpha Shark Tag, or buying multiple sizes in a specific item to see which one would fit best.
For a retailer to primarily rely on return velocity as a basis to accept or deny a return/ refund puts that retailer at risk for offending one of their best, and most legitimate customers.
More research is showing that a greater majority of loyal customers have a higher return velocity. This is due in part to the level of comfort a customer has in spending their money with a particular retailer.
If they know they can take the time to find exactly what they want, they will come back. Sometimes customers want to try on items in their own home. Maybe they need to compare clothing styles and colors to items already in their wardrobe.
Having a product like the Alpha Shark Tag gives a better look at a customer who is returning multiple items legitimately, and ones who are wardrobing their purchased items and have no intention of keeping them after they have worn them.

Best Not To Overcomplicate Things- Retail Anti Theft Devices

Sometimes we get so caught up in a situation that it is easy for things to get overly complicated and messy. It is better to stop, take a step back and reevaluate what is really happening and start over with the solution.
I see so many small shops that have either heard of complex shoplifting scams and schemes or have seen one particularly complex incident and are now devising unnecessarily complicated plans to stop shoplifting.
I always recommend taking a step back and evaluating what the real scenario is, and what the best solution is. While those complex thefts are out there, most of the shoplifters use relatively low- tech and simple forms of shoplifting.
One of the most common shoplifting methods is to conceal merchandise in a bag. That includes handbags, totes, sports duffels and backpacks. A shoplifter thinks they can stuff product in their bag and walk out the door without being noticed.
The best way to deter and combat this kind of theft is to use security tags, commonly called EAS tags. The tag is a visual warning that the merchandise is being protected. Even if the shoplifter tries to steal the product by concealing it in a bag, the EAS alarms will still register.

Only The Best- Pre Employment Screening

When you need to fill an open position, you understand that you are short someone to do the required job functions. That means someone else needs to pick up the slack. If you are the one left picking up the pieces, do you reasonably have time to sift though hundreds of under qualified, or outright bad applicants?
What many companies are doing to reduce the number of unwanted applications to sort through is to include intent to perform a background check. Somewhere on the application, whether it is computerized or on paper, there is wording stating that the job requires a through check to be conducted before final approval to be hired. Next is a signature line for the applicant to authorize the check to be completed.
What major hiring companies and managers are finding is that questionable applicants are declining to turn in these applications. They know that they have potential red flags in their history that they do not want to come up. Instead of completing the application, they move on to the next business that does not require a background check.
In the meantime, you are left with fewer overall applications to sort through. Of those remaining applications, you are left with better overall applicants. They are more honest about any previous criminal activity, previous work history, and can actually validate their education and degrees earned. Your valuable time is spent on hiring the right person, not on weeding out the wrong ones.

Is That One Or Two- Clothing Security

We have had more success with selling swim items separately, instead of as a two-piece set. Customers can buy the correct top and bottom sizes they need, and are much happier with their purchase, decreasing the amount of returns we have on these items.
We also have fewer issues with miss-matched sets. We don’t have to worry about customers taking two sets in different sizes and piecing together the sizes they need, leaving us with a set that is not the same size, and almost impossible to sell.
We also have a better margin selling two pieces for slightly more than what we would sell the set as before. This gives more wiggle room for sales and promotions. It also helps offset some of our shrink losses from shoplifting, since swimwear is always a high theft item.
I had an incident recently where a woman had come into the store to buy a new swim set. She thought that she could be sneaky and basically, con the cashier. This woman picked out her two-piece swimsuit and put them on the same hanger. Then she pulled the price tag off of one of the pieces. She was trying to make it look like the pieces were to be sold as a set, instead of individually.
The cashier caught the error and rang her up for both pieces, instead of just one.

What To Do? – Prevent Shoplifting

One of my employees was talking to me about a shoplifting incident they saw, but they didn’t know what to do about it. She was watching a customer trying on different pairs of earrings and went over to offer her assistance.
The woman quickly said she didn’t need anything, turned around and left. My employee started to clean up the mess this customer left behind. We don’t have a real good inventory control system or EAS devices designed specifically for jewelry and accessories.
The woman had taken several pairs of earrings off the cards, and everything was in a jumble on the counter. As my employee sorted through everything, she noticed that there were two pairs of earrings missing, and the customer looked like she was wearing one of them.
It was a difficult position for my employee to be in. She was probably right in her suspicions that the customer had walked off with at least one if not two pairs of our earrings.
Because we didn’t actually see what happened from the beginning it was too hard to actually tell if this was just a repeat customer who had purchased the earrings previously, or if she did steal them.

Go Big Or Go Home- Clothing Security

One of the challenges facing retailers who sell clothing is trying to prevent a grab and run theft. A grab and run is about as self-explanatory as you can get. The thieves, as there are typically more than one, come into a store, pick up a large quantity of the same merchandise, and run out the door into the waiting get away car.
Usually the merchandise will be either an entire fixture arm of clothes, or all of the merchandise on a display table. We see jeans, name brand coats, and designer ready to wear being the biggest targets of these thefts.
Sometimes the thieves will load their own arms up as with as much as what they can hold, sometimes they will use the store’s shopping bags or carts to hold the massive quantity of merchandise on their way out the door.
Because these thefts are so big and obvious, the shoplifter will come in and out in as little time as possible- sometimes less than a minute total. They will have scoped out the store ahead of time to find out where items are kept. They will figure out the best place to park the escape vehicle, and they will know when your employees are most and least likely to notice them.
