RF Label: Working Hard For You

If you pay an employee you expect him/her to work, right?  Well the same should go for the anti-theft devices you buy.  With the economy the way it is, we are all concerned with expenses.  That said, you have to have employees in order to make sales and in the same regards you have to utilize stop shoplifting tools in order to protect the profit from those sales.

So how can you make anti-theft products “work”?  There are several ways.  First, you have to have the proper employees.  Checkpoint Systems is a leader in innovative stop shoplifting tools, such as RF security tags, RF labels, cameras, clothing alarms, etc.  So now that we have hired the right “employee” in Checkpoint Security Systems, we need to do the training.

Systems are only as good as the people who work them.  Managers need to be properly trained on how to use the Checkpoint System cameras if they are going to track known shoplifters and avoid getting repeatedly hit by the same thieves.  Cashiers and other associates need to be trained on the EAS system so they know how to apply Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags in the correct locations and respond to the alarms properly.  (A few tips on the RF security tags and RF security labels placement.  Put hard tags in seams of product to avoid damaging the merchandise.  Put an RF label near the barcodes (preferably on the inside of the package if possible) to help ensure deactivation at the register.)

Finally, you have to manage the program.  Shoplifting prevention is not a hand off process.  It requires monitoring, regular follow up to ensure proper functionality and fine-tuning; just like the rest of your employees. Make sure that your employees are placing the RF labels in the proper locations. You will also want to make sure that they are not placing the RF security labels directly on metal surfaces.  The good thing is Checkpoint systems offers great service to assist you in this process.

Get more value with your retail anti theft devices with Nano Gate.

For those with retail anti theft devices by Alpha Security you have probably noticed a reduction in theft.  Alpha’s EAS tags are a great product to prevent shoplifting.  But are you getting the full use out of your Alpha 3 alarm technology?

The Nano Gate is a product that is commonly left out when purchasing the Alpha system, but is an important component.  The Nano Gate can be placed in strategic sections of your business to help you get the most of your 3 alarm technology.  When items with the 3 alarm tags pass by the Nano Gate it activates the alarm on the sensor tag.  This brings unwanted attention to the customer, employee or vendor trying to steal and gives you reasonable cause to do a package inspection.  (It’s hard to say the alarm going off in your pocket or bag isn’t a tag).

The Nano Gate is a great solution as it has plug and play installation so it can be put anywhere.  You can install it at your entrance and exits.  It can be installed by restrooms to keep thieves from stealing product in there.  I can be installed at your back receiving doors to keep vendors and employees from walking product out of the back.  Wherever you want to install the Nano Gate you can.  It is a great solution to bolster your current anti-theft program and will help reduce theft from all parties.

Secure Your Clothing Like You Secure Your Car

While walking a shoplifter back to the office the other day I asked her why she hadn’t taken the other pair of jeans she had taken into the fitting room with her. Her response “It’s kinda hard to take them when you put a clothing security tags on them”. Of course I had to be smart with her and reply “If it weren’t for people like you we wouldn’t have to put security tags on clothes”.

What is it with kids thinking that the security tags on clothes “inconvenience” them? Clothing security tags are there to keep the clothing inside the store. Retailers spend thousands of dollars each year to ensure clothing security is in place to keep their losses down and prices down. The more money retailers lose to theft the higher their prices end up getting to compensate for their losses. Applying security tags on clothes helps to keep their prices down and helps ensure they have merchandise to sell to their customers. Clothing security tags are a great return on investment (ROI) for retailers. The company I work for has always only tagged a minimal amount of clothing. Once shrink hit an all time high their priorties changed and we started putting a clothing alarm on more and more products. Within the first year of doing so shrink went down drastically.

If you think about it, retailers are taking clothing security to the same level that people secure their cars. Cars have car alarms and clothes have a clothing alarm to draw attention to them when they are being stolen. No one wants something stolen from them so we go to extremes to ensure they are protected. We all work hard for what we have. Retailers all started somewhere. They have associates to pay, profits to be made and customers to make happy. Clothing security tags don’t inconvenience the consumers they stop or slow theft. Clothing security helps keep the sizes and styles consumers want on the shelves and the shoplifters at bay.

Reasons To Be Alarmed

Anti-theft RF security tags used as part of a stop shoplifting plan along with RF security system EAS protection of vulnerable high theft merchandise is alarming!

The shoplifters think it’s alarming because once the RF security system is installed in the store; they will have to decide on another retailer to visit in order to continue to commit their crime undetected.  The customer can’t remove the Checkpoint security tags once they’re attached.

RF labels are also alarming when it passes through the detection field of the Checkpoint security system’s antennas located at the store’s entrance.  The audible alarm and flashing light (on most models) alert store staff to the fact that an RF label is still attached to articles that are leaving the store and require attention.  An employee using a special detacher specifically designed by Checkpoint security systems removes the RF security tags or deactivates the RF security labels at the point of sale.

Anti-theft applications for the RF security tags are designed for almost any type of merchandise, including specialty items.  The RF (Radio Frequency) technology used in Checkpoint systems is the very latest and most advanced in the industry for retailers.  Also alarming for shoplifters is that the retailer can pick and choose which merchandise to protect.  Shoplifters will definitely avoid stores that utilize a Checkpoint system as part of its stop shoplifting strategy.  Apparel, sports gear, hardware, electronics, and almost any other type of merchandise you can imagine can be protected by one of Checkpoint security systems’ selection of hard tags or Checkpoint Labels.

An RF labels is best suited for items that a tag won’t work well on because of size or material, such as boxed or packaged items.

One thing a retailer won’t be alarmed about is the improvement in inventory shortage figures once an anti-theft program including a Checkpoint system, RF Labels or RF security labels are used in their store.

You don’t have to be Spiderman to prevent shoplifting. Try using Spider Wraps instead.

Whether you are a seasoned LP Professional or new using retail anti theft devices I have a new solution I want to discuss.  It is called Spider Wrap and is made by Alpha Security.  I have been thoroughly impressed with the line of products by Alpha as they aim to provide solutions to a myriad of products.

I have often found items that were hard to protect with standards EAS tags.  For years it seems there have only been two EAS solutions: hard tags and soft tags.  While these are great, there are some products that just need something else.  The product may be in an odd shaped package.  I may not come in a package, but just be wrapped in plastic (which does not give you anywhere to apply a tag).  Whatever the complication, the Spider Wrap is a great solution.

The Spider Wrap is a set of wires that wrap around odly shaped product and come together at a sensor tag.  It can house items in clam shells, small boxes and other odd shaped packages. It does not take up any real space so you can still stock a serviceable amount of product on the peg or shelf.  Another great positive is that the deactivator is the same S3 key that is used on the rest of your Alpha products.  (I can’t tell you how convenient I have found just having one deactivating device for all of my products.)  All-in-all this just one more in a great line of retail anti theft devices that you can use in your attempt to prevent shoplifting.

Saving Softline Profits

In the current retail environment it is essential to reduce cost and increase profit.  One way to do this is to limit your exposure to soft line waste, due to theft.  The use of clothing security tags is very important, as clothing theft accounts for huge losses to soft line retailers.  The investment into clothing security tags can save you time and money, allowing you to focus more on customer service and less on theft prevention.

Placing security tags on clothes provides a retailer with a huge deterrent to theftClothing security tags have become a staple in most soft line retail outlets, as they are the first line of defense in preventing theft and waste in the retail market. As loss prevention professionals, it is imperative that all effective measures be taken to protect the assets of our stores. In addition to clothing security tags, which are placed directly on the clothing, there are also clothing alarms, which sound when Checkpoint tags pass through them.  Clothing alarms are a great deterrent as they are seen by possible shoplifters upon entry to your store and tell them you mean business

In my experience, I have seen first hand the difference the use of security tags on clothing has made in preventing clothing theft.  The investment into clothing security tags and a clothing alarm is a smart and strategic one.

Is discount abuse really causing losses in Atlanta Georgia?

The answer is “Yes”.  Employee discount abuse does actually cause a loss to the company.  When I refer to discount abuse I am talking about an associate letting friends and family members use their employee discount.  Many companies give their employees a discount as a perk of working for the company.  As we all know employees like to share this little perk with others.  This is a type of internal theft, also known as employee theft, and must be dealt with.  This means conducting an employee theft investigation.

It is easy to ignore this type of activity, but an employee theft investigation must still take place.  For one reason there is a policy violation.  Most all companies who give a discount have a clear policy about who is suppose to receive the discount.  This is also an ethical concern.  If an employee will clearly break a policy for personal gain by giving a discount away then what’s to say they won’t engage in other types of more serious employee theft.  You are either honest or you’re not.  Ethics does not have shades of grey.

The second thing the associate is guilty of is internal theft.  The company is losing profits by the employee’s friends and family members not paying full price.  The more a customer pays for the product the more the company makes.  These unauthorized discounts (aka employee theft) are thus cutting into the profits.  Again, even though it may be small amounts over the course of time you will find you are losing significant dollars.  Consider if you have a 10% discount and each employee gives that away to 3 friends and family members.  If you have just 10 employees that is still 30 people getting 10% off hundreds to thousands of dollars of merchandise a year.  Now we are talking real profit loss.

RF Done Right

A few days ago I received a service call from a new client who needed service on an existing Checkpoint system that he had purchased to stop shoplifting at his retail store. The problem he was having is that two days after the system was installed it started to false alarm. After talking with the gentleman I found out that he had purchased the system from an uncertified company that was selling “refurbished” Checkpoint security systems

He had attempted to contact the company he had purchased the Checkpoint system from but they were giving him the runaround and were not making any efforts to resolve his problem. After being unsuccessful with the “reseller of his refurbished system” he contacted Loss Prevention Systems, Inc. We promptly setup a service call scheduled for the following day. Upon arriving onsite the technician discovered what the problem was… everything.

The problem with an uncertified “reseller” is that they have not been adequately trained nor do they have the correct equipment to install a Checkpoint system properly. If you have someone who does not know what they are doing, you risk a similar situation. From the unique type of wire that is used to the software that programs an antenna, only someone factory certified on Checkpoint security systems will be able to ensure that your system will operate at its highest efficiency.

The “reseller” also sold this gentleman what he thought were Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels. The problem was that the RF labels he bought were actually an aftermarket knockoff RF label. These knockoff RF labels are very unreliable. Genuine Checkpoint RF security labels and RF security tags are very hard to copy, these company’s that try to duplicate an RF label usually have at least one of two problems. Either a large number of RF security labels will not alarm the system or it’s what is referred to as a “stubborn” label, which means that the label will not deactivate at the time of purchase and causes a properly purchased item to alarm a Checkpoint system when your client leaves the store.

If you are considering purchasing a Checkpoint security system and RF security tags, don’t make the mistake of using an uncertified reseller. Let us help you get the right parts at the right price the first time.

Have you considered EAS tags to prevent shoplifting of your little things??

Stop right there.  Minds out of the gutters.  You can certainly use retail anti theft devices such as EAS tags to prevent shoplifting of the under garments you may sell.  What I am talking about are your other accessories.  Items such as: sunglasses, belts, shoes, handbags, small packaged items, etc.  They say “big things come in small packages” for a reason.  That reason is that many small accessories are quite expensive.

For many years EAS tags came in two types.  The first is hard tags that are generally large and require a pin and label to attach the tag to the item.  Can’t really use that on sunglasses.  The other option was to use soft tags, but those are a little easier to remove than hard tags.  Well now there are hard tags from Alpha Security designed to fit these smaller and unique items.  Alpha’s “Mag Accessory Tags” and “Eyewear Tags” can be used on your existing AM and RF EAS systems.

The Eyewear tags are made specifically for putting on glasses.  These can go on sunglasses or even prescription glasses that you may sell.  They are durable and hard for shoplifters to remove.  Since they will trigger your EAS alarm they will go a long way toward reducing theft.

The Mag Accessory Tag is the other great option for small items.  They are less bulky than traditional hard tags and have a small corded loop that is used to attach to the product versus a pin that goes through the product.  These can be applied to most anything but boxes and will prevent shoplifting much better than traditional soft tags.

The lack of Checkpoint tags used on clothing accessories is alarming!!

I am often surprised when I am shopping and don’t see clothing security on clothing accessories.  I find that many retailers remember to put security tags on clothes that are standard, such as shirts, pants and jackets.  But those same stores will not have clothing security tags on accessories such as: ties, gloves, scarves, etc.

To me, these seem like the most logical items to add clothing security to since they are small and easy to steal.  They also, generally are expensive.  I don’t know how many readers have purchased a tie recently, but many are about as expensive as a shirt and they are much easier to steal.  As we are approaching the cold weather season stores will start carrying gloves and scarves.  These again can be quite expensive and are much easier to steal than a winter coat, yet they are often forgotten.

One important note is to use Checkpoint tags that are appropriate for the size of accessory you want to protect.  Checkpoint tags come in a variety of sizes and styles.  For ties, you will not want to use a hard tag and puncture the tie itself so you may use a soft tag hidden under the price label (or embedded in the price label).  Another alternative is to use a woven label.  This would be woven on the backside of the tie and is harder to remove.  The same thing goes for scarves and other small accessories.  Now when looking at tagging gloves you have several options.  If they have elastic cuffs then I would use hard tags.  Hard clothing security tags are always the hardest to remove and provide the best security.  When you are looking at tagging leather gloves; however, you can’t really use hard tags so the soft tags are a more likely solution.
