TRACK YOUR INVENTORY TO STOP SHOPLIFTING

The use of checkpoint labels is a proven method to stop shoplifting.

 Why?

Most theft is conducted by opportunists who looking for vulnerable merchandise.  To stop shoplifting and retailer must limit the number of opportunities a shoplifter has to steal something.

Major retailers will use an RF label to track accessories like jewelry and watches or fragrances because they can be concealed easily.  Grocery stores will typically place RF security labels on expensive meats in a cooler or wine on display.

Checkpoint security tags are successful because they alert a staff member when someone attempts to leave the store with unprocessed merchandise.

Checkpoint labels and RF labels are easy to use and cost effective.  During the course of merchandising your products all you need to do is place the RF labels or checkpoint security tags on each item you wish to track.

RF labels can be attached to merchandise using a fast drying adhesive that make them difficult to remove.  When a customer purchases a piece of merchandise the RF label is deactivated at the checkout counter.

A company I once worked for placed RF security labels on all accessories merchandise.  One summer afternoon last year 6 teenagers skipped school and decided to do a little shoplifting in our store.  They selected close to $500 USD in silver pendant bracelets and attempted to leave the store by placing them on their body to give the impression they had been purchased.

When they walked through our sensors the store alarms were activated.  The teenagers were so scared they started removing the merchandise as quickly as possible.  They eventually “dumped” the merchandise at the entrance to the store and ran out of the mall.

We never saw them back in the store after that incident.

Did you know Public View Monitors actually prevent shoplifting?

Stores have been using camera systems for decades in order to catch and prevent shoplifting.  One popular component of camera systems is the use of Public View Monitors (or PVM).  The Public View Monitor is a video monitor that is placed on the sales floor where customers can see themselves on the screen.  This shows them that they are, in fact, being recorded.  The main reason for using retail anti theft devices is to prevent shoplifting and that is precisely what PVM’s can do for you.

We use a variety of retail anti theft devices in our stores.  All have a different purpose.  For example, we use sensor tags because it will cause an alarm and bring unwanted attention to a shoplifter.  We use Keeper cases and Spider wraps in an effort to keep shoplifters from walking out with product.  We use things like ink tags so that if tampered with the merchandise will be rendered unusable and thus not worth the thief’s time to try.  The PMV’s are used for a different reason.  These are used to show shoplifters that they will be recorded on video and that we, and quite possibly the police, will know exactly who they are.

Shoplifters don’t want to be known.  They know that just because they don’t get locked up today doesn’t necessarily mean they got away free and clear.  I have had success prosecuting numerous thieves by filing a police report and turning over the video of a theft.  The police are then able to link the theft at my store with someone caught elsewhere or even pulled over for a traffic violation.  With that said, when a would-be shoplifter knows they are on video they are much more likely to go to another store where perhaps they are not being recorded.

“It’s not important to put security tags on clothes”, says the sucker!!

Anyone who thinks it is not important to put security tags on clothes will not be in business long.  Clothes are perhaps the easiest items to steal.  Think about it.  The most obvious shoplifting advantage is fitting rooms.  Only clothing retailers have fitting rooms where shoplifters can conceal product in complete privacy.  All other retailers force shoplifters to at least steal on the floor where they can be observed either in person or on camera.  Secondly, no one questions the clothes people wear.  This means shoplifters can simply change clothes or put unpaid for clothes on over what they are wearing and it draws no attention.

In other retailers shoplifters have to carry bags, dress unseasonably or walk around with huge bulges under their clothes (where they have concealed product).  All of these things are dead giveaways to store personnel who are trained in shoplifting detection.  So with all that being said, it is definitely important to put security tags on clothes.

One of the top options to add clothing security to your store is by using clothing security tags.  One maker of clothing security is Checkpoint.  Checkpoint tags are a very reliable product that is well known by shoplifters.  When used with the clothing alarm, the Checkpoint tags will set off the clothing alarm when someone tries to leave with unpaid for merchandise.  This will give your associates the ability to potentially recover the merchandise or at least recognize the shoplifter and be ready the next time he/she comes in.  The other benefit is the deterrent effect.  When a would-be shoplifter sees an associate respond to a clothing alarm it lets them know up front that they will be noticed.  This in many cases will cause that person to leave your products alone and attempt theft somewhere less risky.

Use a reliable Background Check Company from keeping the preverbal bad apple from spoiling your bunch!!

If you have spent any amount of time in a work environment then you know how much employees impact all aspects of your business.  Having the right employee brings you much productivity, makes your job easier and keeps employee moral high.  Conversely, having the wrong employee can undermine your whole operation.  While good interviews are great we have all seen a candidate who is much better on paper and in an interview than what we end up with punching the clock.

To this end I recommend using employee background checks and a pre employment screening to aid you in weeding out the bad candidates so you get the right person for your business.  There are many different background checks you can use depending on the Background Check Company you use and the position that you are hiring for.  One basic type is criminal background checks.  This looks for local, state and possibly federal criminal histories in an effort to ensure your candidate has not been convicted for or even arrested for a crime.  Another option I like my Background Check Company to run is past employment and educational background checks.  These are two of the most falsified items on an employee’s resume.  They can also be hard to track down yourself as many companies no longer give references to other perspective employers.

Finally, pre employment screening for things like sex offender status and financial history can be important.  Would you hire someone to handle your company’s funds who can’t manage their own?  Do you want a sex offender working in a capacity that would bring them into contact with client’s kids?  All of these things bring risk to your company and quality employee background checks can help eliminate these liable hazards.

Use retail anti theft devices to keep the upcoming “trick or treating” out of your store!!!

We all know that some customers “treat” themselves to our products without paying for them.  Additionally, we have all seen some “tricking” in our stores as well.  This may be in terms of running various scams aimed at getting products and services without paying for them or it could be more malicious and be property destruction and hold ups.  Whatever the form, it is important that we use retail anti theft devices in order to prevent shoplifting and protect our stores from the mischief that abounds.

There are several great retail anti theft devices that can be used in the fight to prevent shoplifting, hold ups and property destruction.  One such device is the time tested Electronic Article Surveillance system (or EAS).  This system involves applying sensor tags to products and then setting off an alarm when the unpaid for products leave the store.  The newer systems by Checkpoint and Alpha Security work on an RF frequency and produces few “ghost alarms” (or false alarms) so they are much more reliable than the systems of old.

Another option to use cameras and Public View Monitors (aka PVM’s).  Cameras are great because they record the activity in the store and provide crucial evidence when prosecuting offenders.  They also give you the ability to “go back in time” and see what happened when you went looking.  It is a great investigative tool that can’t be undersold.  When you use PVM’s you also add to the deterrent effect.  Ghouls, goblins and other criminals don’t want to be caught committing their misdeeds.  Knowing that they are being recorded will deter many from attempting serious offenses such as armed robbery and vandalism.  It is too easy for police to track them down so you increase the safety of your customers and employees by using these tools.

Clothing security is a must have tool for footwear theft.

As we enter the new season we have to worry about the new shoplifters that will be visiting our stores.  There are many different retailers who sell footwear and all know how hard it is to protect this product.  Most footwear theft is perpetrated by the shoplifter trading in his/her old shoes for new ones.  This is very hard to catch as no product is concealed and no one really questions what shoes a customer has on.  To help protect this expensive product I suggest using clothing security tags.

Checkpoint tags are a great product to help protect shoes.  You can use soft Checkpoint tags to hide under the insole.  Many shoplifters look for hard tags so this will keep them guessing, but when they walk out your associates will be alerted by your clothing alarm to the potential theft.  You can also use hard Checkpoint tags on shoes.  If the shoes have laces you can put the pin for the hard Checkpoint tags through the lace holes.  This will not damage the product and it is very hard for a would-be shoplifter to remove.

Another option to putting security tags on clothes is products by Alpha Security.  There are several clothing security devices that can be used and they will work with your existing AM and RF clothing alarm.  One option is the Fashion 2 accessory tag.  This tag has a little metal loop that will allow you to secure the hard tag to the shoe.  Another option is the 3 alarm cable lock.  This also is a hard tag with a cable to attach to the shoe, but it also has a built in alarm.  If tampered with the clothing alarm will sound immediately.  With all the theft today it is important to put security tags on clothes in order to protect the profits we work so hard to achieve.

Employee Steals $41,000. Criminal Background Checks Would Have Prevented!

I recently conducted an investigation into a very expensive employee theft loss where adequate background checks were not conducted. As I was interviewing the employee it hit me that had this company been conducting criminal background checks none of this would have ever occurred. The employee would have never had the opportunity to steal $41,000 because she would have never been hired. She had been caught before, TWICE!

Background check experts know what to look for and how to obtain it. In many cases a background check company can locate records that are not easily obtainable. Many times when we conduct employee background checks we look “between the lines” of what the candidate told our client. We will find not only criminal records that they lied about or omitted but we will also find serious facts that would curl the hair of any potential employer. Pre employment screening has revealed that applicants have not just stolen from one but many previous employers. We have also found violent crimes including sexual assault and robbery just to name a few.

As a background check company we have also conducted background checks on people who have outright lied about their education. Pre employment screening of this type has revealed candidate who not only did not finish a degree but never even attended the school.

Besides criminal background checks and education employers should look at credit histories, driving records, SSN validations and sex offender records just to name a few. Many employers believe that they have staff that can conduct employee background checks and be their own in-house background check experts. That would be like trying to be your own doctor. It takes special skills and abilities to make this process cost effective and complete. Do not risk YOUR business!

Employee theft by “hook-ups” is popular in Atlanta Georgia.

There are many ways that retailers can incur internal theft (also known as employee theft).  A popular way for internal theft to occur is by “hook-ups” or what we often call “sweet-hearting”.  As I have worked 12 years in Loss Prevention I have encountered numerous instances of this type of employee theft.

We all like to think about peer pressure being kids and drinking.  The reality is that we can all be susceptible to peer pressure.  Through conducting an employee theft investigation I talk to many associates who would never have dreamed of stealing had it not been for someone else.  That someone else can be another employee, a friend or a family member.  Sometimes that other person can be just a regular customer.  One of the warning signs to internal theft by sweet-hearting is employees who have a lot of friends and family members around.  If you stop and think I’m sure everyone reading this can picture an associate who seems to always be hanging out with friends while on the clock.  I would conduct an employee theft investigation on that person and look to see did all items get scanned at the register and also check to make sure the prices were not reduced.  These are prime ways to hook friends up.

Something that can be harder to spot is when the sweet-hearting happens between two employees.  Many associates develop friendships with one another.  Often this can lead to quid-pro-quo sweet-hearting.  One associate will pass off (which is bag without scanning the product) or under-ring for another associate and then later that person will return the favor.  When doing an employee theft investigation I generally look at employee purchase first.  You can find a lot of internal theft activity by just routinely reviewing employee purchases.  Sweet-hearting can be hard to catch, but it happens often so stay on high alert.

RF labels two letters with a lot of stopping power

There are many abbreviated letters that can have tremendous meaning such as SOS. But in the security industry RF labels, which stand for Radio Frequency labels, holds its own. An RF label is one of the many tools used to stop shoplifting. These RF labels work together with a EAS system. This system together with RF Security labels detect when an unpaid item is being removed from the establishment. When trying to stop shoplifting checkpoint security tags are one of the biggest tools one can use to combat theft. When placing checkpoint labels on your items this not only can stop shoplifting but can deter shoplifting. RF labels come in different sizes and can be programmed to each establishment systems frequency. You can place an RF label on high value perfumes or hi priced electronic devices the main goal is still to stop shoplifting.

In my experience I have seen how well RF security tags work when they are used properly. In any security program knowing how to place an RF security labels and how to deactivate a RF security labels at purchase can assure that the business is getting the proper use of these checkpoint security tags. Any equipment that is going to be used to stop shoplifting the staff has to be taught on how to use it properly.  So if you want to assure that your business remains profitable RF security tags, Checkpoint labels and RF labels will address all your needs.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint labels, Checkpoint security tags, and other RF labels that can help you stop shoplifting in your business.

Who is really affected by Internal theft – Atlanta Georgia

I have been involved in the security industry for over twenty years. During those years I have conducted hundreds of Employee theft investigation s and have heard every excuse or reason why the internal theft happened. But who are the actual victims from employee theft?

The first obvious victims are the retailers. Retailers suffer millions of dollars a year in theft and a large portion of that loss comes from employee theft. The second victim is the consumer, many companies offset their prices due to the amount of loss they suffer from theft. The next victim is the employee that works for the retailer every day and performs their job properly every day. These employees eventually suffer by losing their jobs when companies have to lay off staff or retailers close their doors because financially the company can no longer operate.

But there are many programs that retailers can use to help combat employee theft. One is to include a security orientation with all new employees to assure them of how serious the company takes employee theft. The second is to provide a method for employees to report internal theft issues and remain anonymous. Some of my previous clients even offered a reward to employee that come forward and report internal theft issues anonymously. Once an employee theft investigation is conducted and if the information is correct the employee would received the reward. Retailers have to use any and all tools available to them to assure that employee theft can be stopped before it gets started.
