Employee Theft: Where did It all Go? Atlanta Georgia

Unfortunately, many retailers are asking the question, “Where did it all go?”.  The answer is disturbing but true, you paid someone to take it.  Employee theft is one of the primary reasons retailers experience millions in losses each year.  It seems comical really to think you actually pay someone to take advantage of your business.  Employee theft can be devastating and often the extent of the damage is not known unto it is too late to correct.  In my experience employee theft has caused many stores to go out of business as they were simply not able to produce profits amid the extensive and enormous amount of internal theft.

It is an elaborate game of cops and robbers and unfortunately there are more robbers than cops.  Internal theft continues to rise at an alarming rate.  Employers are using every opportunity they can find to take from their employers.  In an environment where consumers are spending less, business can not allow profit to simply walk out of their stores.  Internal theft has to be addressed and corrected, if a business is going to continue to be viable.  Employers must become aware of the many ways in which employees choose to take from their employers. The way in which transactions are conducted at the point of sale registers allow employees to take what they want without being noticed.

An effective employee theft investigation can help set an employer’s mind at ease and all without alarming a suspected dishonest employee.  Loss prevention professionals conduct thousands of internal investigations every month and are able to identify theft and resolve the matter quickly. An effective and well handled employee theft investigation does more than identify a dishonest employee; it helps prevent other employees from thinking that they can take from their employer. It is imperative if an employer has a suspicion that employee theft may be occurring at their business that they begin an employee theft investigation immediately. This will prevent you from having to answer the unfortunate question of, “Where did it all go?”

Stopping shoplifting via RF technology!!

RF security labels, the business owners secret weapon to stop shoplifting. I have always been a huge fan of RF label technology. I have apprehended many shoplifters in my day who foolishly attempted to remove checkpoint security tags or conceal product tagged with RF security labels. Checkpoint in particular has evolved this technology over the years to near perfection.

The Checkpoint labels, soft tags, have become so much more durable and stick to almost every product imaginable. Everything from books, to music, to movies to shoes to fragrances can utilize the RF label. In the beginning many years ago the RF security labels would not stick to product and sometimes fell off, that issue has since been remedied. RF labels are one of the most dependable checkpoint security tags companies use today.

Larger companies even employ source tagging which allows all specified product to be tagged with RF labels at the distribution center thus saving payroll hours at the store level. Instead of a store location spending time and effort to tag and then merchandise product as an added step of the shipment receiving process items are tagged with Checkpoint labels and audited at the distribution center thus allowing payroll to be utilized more effectively.

Another positive point about the checkpoint labels is that it is by no means easily removed from tagged product without bringing attention to yourself on the sales floor. The last suspect I caught had been attempting to remove RF security tags from sneakers. The suspect was not only drawing attention he was visibly frustrated that the RF labels were not easily removed. He then proceeded to put the still tagged shoes in his bag and attempt to leave the store where he was met by me, my staff and the checkpoint pedestal alarm.  This goes a long way to stop shoplifting.

Also, many businesses will hide the soft tag while letting customers know clearly through store signage that the Checkpoint security tags are used and will result in an alarm if removed from the store without first being deactivated and or removed. When a shoplifter knows there is a checkpoint system using RF security tags that they may or may not see it gives them pause to steal since they do not know where the product is tagged. Clearly showing all customers that you employ and checkpoint system will bring you ever closer to your goal to stop shoplifting.

The highest shrink categories I experienced in larger store locations were fragrances and jewelry accessories. There was always a battle to lock all of these items up thus reducing the potential for sales. The RF label system allows businesses to maximize sales potential and merchandise the product in a way that it is pleasing to the customer. The key to ensuring your highest shrink categories are protected by the RF security tags is to make sure the store staff tags all specified product properly and that vulnerable product is audited for tagging compliance.

Preventing Bad Hiring Choices With Background Checks

Have you ever been confident in the abilities and outward qualifications of a potential employee for your business, only to realize later that based on their prior job history the decision to hire them was a mistake?  That has happened countless times at workplaces.  After all, it is difficult to size up a person and truly understand what they are about after one or two meetings with them.

Utilizing a background check company can aid in solving these problems you face as an employer.  An employee background check can tell you so much more about a person than what you are able to determine from reading a resume` or chatting with a candidate for employment.  While us honest people want to take what someone is telling us about themselves at face value, we also have a vested interest in protecting our business and not setting it up to suffer losses.

A pre employment screening can give you an in-depth report about who this person really is and whether or not they would be a worthwhile contribution to the success of your business.  Criminal background checks also help you decide if this potential employee should be working at your business.  Peace of mind does not get any better than that.

Someone seeking employment is probably not going to tell you all about their work history, criminal history, etc, when you are visiting with him or her about whether or not they should work for your company.  They are trying to sell themselves as a viable candidate, but before you make that commitment background checks are a way to know the risk you are taking is a worthwhile one.

Background check experts can do the investigating for you so you can find the person that is the best fit for your company.  Lowering the risk taking on a potential employee by conducting background checks increases the potential for profit in the long run.

Keeping an Eye on Your DenimKeeping an Eye on Your Denim

Over the years I have spent working with clothing security, denim has always been one of the highest areas of shrink. Some of the appeal of denim comes from the high price point of designer labels. Some of it comes out of necessity, after all, who doesn’t want a great pair of jeans in their wardrobe?

Denim attracts the large scale shoplifter who comes in and picks up as many jeans as they can, and then they make a mad dash for the door. By having security tags on the clothes, we hear the audible clothing alarm go off as they attempt to leave. Often the sound of the alarm scares them into dropping the jeans as they escape into their waiting car.

Sometimes the thief tries to switch out their old pair for a new one in a fitting room. The more merchandise that has clothing security tags, specifically the Checkpoint tags, the less likely this sort of attempt will be successful. No one really wants to walk around with a Checkpoint tag on the bottom of their jeans. With out a detacher, it is near impossible to remove without damaging the jeans.

Having adequate security tags on clothes is a great step to ensuring clothing security, especially when it comes to denim. Checkpoint tags come in a wide variety to fit every style. They even have soft labels that can slide into a pocket, so you don’t have a bulky tag on a skinny pair of jeans. Think of them as a round the clock watch dog for your denim.

Internal theft and external theft which is worst? – Atlanta Georgia

In the retail industry external theft or shoplifting as it is commonly known is a part of doing business. Anyone who has worked in the retail industry has dealt with or actually seen a shoplifting incident during their career.  But the one problem that every retail industry dreads is internal theft. This issue causes retailer to deal now with employee theft problems. It is bad enough to worry about those individuals that come from the outside to steal, but now you have to conduct Employee theft investigation inside your organization.

You now have the employee’s that you count on to give proper customer service and represent your organization are now the subject of Employee theft investigation. During my career I have conducted hundreds on internal theft investigations. Most of the employee theft subjects are new employee’s that have just started, but you have those employees that have been with the organization for many years. So the first question that I always ask is why? Why after so many years would you steal from the company the answer varies? But the one constant during the employee theft investigation is that they didn’t think they would get caught.

Many internal theft issues can be prevented by following the safeguards that have been put in place. The minute these policies are not followed the chance for an employee theft incident to happen is imminent. So anytime you think that you can break protocol to finish your job faster. When you don’t take the time to log down who enters a security cage or who has the keys to that cage. How much money have you just cost your organization by not following policy.

RF Labels, RF Security Labels, or RF Security Tags: Many Names For an Effective Security Tool.

RF technology is quickly becoming a retail industry security standard.  RF labels, RF security tags, and RF security labels allow a retail business to secure their product with a very effective and non-invasive security tool.  These RF label, RF security labels, and RF security tags are a very effective tool to stop shoplifting and employee theft.  These two activities can have a negative impact on a retail business of any level.   They can affect the largest of multi-national corporations or the small business owner.

In response to the threat of these issues, Checkpoint Security has developed and supplies the Checkpoint Security Tag and the Checkpoint Labels.  Checkpoint Security can provide RF labels, RF security tags and RF security labels to address your businesses security needs.  I have worked with Checkpoint Security in my career and can attest to their business-to-business service and their knowledge of the retail industry.   I have used Checkpoint Security technology as a part of my district and regional loss prevention strategy.  The tools that the company provides have always had a positive impact on the security of my stores and have had an almost non-existent impact on the customer experience.  Their ability to stop shoplifting is substantial.

Much of the loss prevention theory is that limiting the opportunity of shoplifters is the best policy to stop shoplifting.  To limit or stop shoplifting, a retailer must create a sense of control in their stores.  This can successfully be done with the RF label or RF security tag.  It would be wise for any retail business, big or small to look into the Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint Security tags.

Focus on customers not shoplifters with clothing security tags!

Great customer service drives retail businesses. Without great service, customers won’t want to come back and continuing buying your merchandise. But how can you deliver great service if all of your focus is on shoplifters and potential thieves? Allow clothing security tags to deter the shoplifters and free you up to deliver the service that will drive customers to come back time and time again.

A few days ago at a store neighboring my work, a shoplifter ran out with several pairs of jeans that had no clothing security tags. The associates and managers were in a panic outside of the store calling the police and attempting to describe what the thief looked like as he ran down the street with their clothes. I couldn’t help but wonder how many potential customers could have received great customer service in the time the associates were busy with the thief. They could have sold hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise! If only they had clothing security.

Occurrences such as the one above could have easily been prevented had that store installed clothing alarms. Installing Checkpoint tags and clothing alarms throughout your store can free up your associates to fully focus on the customer. Not only can security tags on clothes deter shoplifters, they have minimal interference to the customer who can simply take them to the register to have the clothing security removed at the time of purchase.

Don’t be the store that is not protected. Install clothing security, such as Checkpoint tags, on your merchandise and allow your associates to focus on the customer.

Employ the Background Check Experts Along With Your Holiday Employees

As the holidays approach businesses are hiring more employees to prepare for the increase in customers.  Whether temporary or permanent hires, it is important to make sure that these potential hires are a good fit for your businesses.  It is hard to know much about a person from an application or an interview, so pre employment screening can help answer some of those questions you do not learn from that first meeting.

A criminal background check protects your assets on the front side by helping you not hire someone with a questionable history.  Losses suffered by businesses are caused more by employee theft than by customer theft, so background checks can help weed out the potential employees that may have stolen from businesses in the past.  Employee background checks are proactive instead of reactive in regards to loss prevention.

A background check company can look into the history of your potential hire and let you know what that person may not have disclosed during their interview or on their application.  There is no reason to risk your business and its assets by setting yourself up for an internal theft issue.  The background check experts can give you a full report about a potential hire and help you make a decision about whether or not to employ that person.  These types of decisions are important so that your business remains profitable and competitive.

The holidays are supposed to bring extra profits from extra customers coming into your business.  Do not lose those profits by hiring someone whose intent is to steal from you.  A pre employment screening can help you feel comfortable with your decision when hiring.

There has been a struggle with retail anti theft devices that protect jewelry. New products have come to the market that will change all of that. Alpha Security has released the first of several new items called Jewel Lok.

These retail anti theft devices are designed for bracelets, chains, necklaces and other small loose jewelry items.

The Jewel Lok , Loose Jewelry Solution contains either an RF or AM EAS coil. The hook is hardened steel that cannot be cut with scissors or nail clippers and is coated in plastic to prevent scratches on jewelry. A shoplifter will think twice before stealing jewelry protected with this an Alpha High Theft Solutions Loose Jewelry device.

The next items that have not yet been released are the Hoop Earring Solution and the Stud Earring Solution. These devices will prevent shoplifting by locking the earrings to the card. They are a benefit denial device. This means that the shoplifter will destroy the merchandise before it is removed. A Checkpoint label added to the card will complete the protection cycle.

Employee Theft: The Quiet Threat Of The Retail Industry

Employee theft like external theft is an unfortunate reality for the retail professional.  Many small business owners and large corporations are looking to new and traditional methods to reduce their exposure to internal theft.   Although, technology increases and new methods of detecting employee theft are developed, traditional employee theft investigations can be an effective method of removing this element from you business.

The traditional employee theft investigation aims to not only remove the individual form your operation, but also attempts to identify any control failures or preventable loopholes in your business.  These employee theft investigations usually involve the work of the entire loss prevention and management teams.  The investigations most often begin with a tip, an observed behavior, a cash shortage or just general suspicion of an employee.  When the loss prevention department receives this information they begin their employee theft investigation.  Commonly, the in store loss prevention team begins by monitoring and working with the store management team to effectively schedule the employee in question.  This gives the team the opportunity to watch the employee and identify how they are causing a loss to the organization.  This not only provides the method, but also what controls the store needs to change to prevent these actions in the future.  Once the internal theft is identified, the employee theft investigation moves on to the interview.

The internal theft interview is a controlled employee theft discussion.  This allows the loss prevention professional to discuss the situation surrounding the loss and allows the individual engaged in the employee theft to provide a reason why.  The interview often results in corrective action, up to and including termination or prosecution.

While most large organization have a department that is solely dedicated to deal with the internal theft issues, smaller businesses do not.  So what is the small business owner to do?  There are many organizations that can provide this service and an effect price.  This service can have a large impact on your business and improve your general moral.
