How Much Is Not Enough? – Retail Theft Prevention

Many retailers have stopped wasting their time apprehending shoplifting incidents under twenty-five dollars. What they have found is that the time and money spent to apprehend and prosecute these low dollar cases does not outweigh the losses from the crime. So it makes sense, financially, to let those small-dollar shoplifting incidents go.
Unfortunately, when you have too many small dollar incidents, you still risk these losses adding up to a cumulatively large financial loss.
For the big box stores that are large enough and financially secure enough to absorb such losses, this is not a big deal. What about for the smaller retailer? How much can you effectively absorb before it is too big to handle?
You might want to focus on smaller dollar losses, so they do not become a bigger issue over time. It might make more sense to you to take care to these little things.
You have to take the time to evaluate your own financial situation to determine how much is still not enough to prosecute? Maybe your store can set a limit at ten dollars; maybe you don’t want to waste your resources unless the crime is over fifty dollars.
Whatever the mark is, understanding both the short term and the long term valuations will determine what makes sense to you.

Repeat Customer – Prevent Shoplifting

A woman had taken several pairs of earrings off the cards, and everything was in a jumble on the counter. One of our employees was watching this customer and went over to offer her assistance. The woman quickly said she didn’t need anything, turned around and left. My employee started to clean up the mess this customer left behind.
As my employee sorted through everything, she noticed that there were two pairs of earrings missing, and the customer looked like she was wearing one of them.
It was a difficult position for my employee to be in. She was probably right in her suspicions that the customer had walked off with at least one if not two pairs of our earrings.
Because we didn’t actually see what happened from the beginning it was too hard to actually tell if this was just a repeat customer who had purchased the earrings previously, or if she did steal them.
I know that there are EAS devices designed to keep jewelry on the cards and prevent this kind of situation from happening. It would have been easier on my employee who didn’t know if she should have done something differently to prevent a possible theft.
We are also now suspicious of a potentially honest customer. We don’t know if she stole, or why she left so fast. It could just as easily been an honest situation, and someone else made the mess and stole (or lost) the earrings.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Keep A Watchful Eye- Clothing Security

During a recent loss prevention consultation with a local clothing store, we knew we needed to have some ways to identify what kinds of thefts were taking place, and what kinds of clothing protection would be effective to stop the inventory losses for happening.
We started by taking a look at the store’s sales reports. We broke the sales down by departments and compared them to last month’s sales and last year’s. We noticed which departments were behind on their sales goals for the year, and which ones did not increase compared to last year.
I explained that if they did not have the right products to sell, then they would not have a chance at meeting or exceeding their sales goals.
Next we looked for signs of theft- specifically for torn of clothing tags. We found several caches of them behind the mirrors in the fitting rooms. We also found them under some shelves in an unattended corner of the store.
One of the most basic solutions was to start using electric article surveillance tags and devices to protect the inventory from theft. Next we put a seal of caulk around the fitting room mirrors, preventing the thieves from sticking price and clothing tags behind them.
Lastly, we moved the tables around to open up the back corner. Now, even when an employee can’t physically be back in that corner, they can still keep a watchful eye from the front of the store.

Beyond The Criminal Element- Criminal Background Checks

If you have hired a background check company to execute your pre employment screening, you are assuming that they will be able to track down every little tidbit of information that they can.
For the most part, you are right. If it is a rather egregious offense, the basic criminal background checks or common credit checks should discover them. However, there are lesser offenses that are just as criminal, but do not show up on criminal background checks.
No matter how thorough a background check company is, they can only discover so much, based on which reports they are searching.
You might assume, for example, that an employee that is caught stealing at their previous employer will automatically appear on criminal background checks. This is not always the case. An employee must be given the chance to prove their innocence in a court of law. If they are convicted and found guilty by those courts, then- and only then- will their crimes be committed to public record.
If a company does not prosecute- for whatever reason- an employee’s misdoings will not become public record, therefore not appearing on criminal background checks.
Background check companies must then do additional employment verifications or search agencies that document employee theft cases. They may charge an additional cost to potential employers to do these additional searches. Depending on the quality of the employees you hire on a regular basis, this may end up being money well spent- compared to hiring a known thief.

No Need To Make It Any Worse- Retail Theft Prevention

Many retailers who sell electronics are faced with a multitude of problems as they cling onto as much of their profits as what they can. Retail theft prevention is just the start of their inventory woes. Along with show rooming, merchandise theft has one of the biggest impacts on profitability.
Show rooming is becoming more frequent as more shoppers are turning to online ordering and price comparisons. These savvy shoppers scour the internet sites for the best price of a particular electronic device they want. Rather than buying this item sight unseen, they drive to the closest brick and mortar store to visually inspect and understand the device. They are able to use the knowledgeable sales staff to answer any particular questions they might have.
Inside the store, retailers need to provide displays so they have a fighting chance of securing the sale, instead of driving the already scarce customers elsewhere to make their purchases. In doing so, these electronic devices need to be accessible to the customer, but also need to be retail theft prevention conscious.
The Alpha Security Atlas Display is a great solution for both problems. It will secure the device while allowing a wider range of accessibility for the customer.

Let The Lock Do The Work- Bottle Locks

Liquor bottle security is about adapting and adjusting to today’s business climate, not wallowing in how things used to be. Advancements in technology allow liquor bottle security to do some of the work for us.
Instead of confronting people we suspect of shoplifting, we can use theft prevention, like the Alpha Security EASy Bottle to deter them from the start. If the EASy Bottle is not removed, an alarm will sound as the person exits with a bottle. That gives us a reason to approach, not accuse, but to approach them and ask them to pay for the product. These bottle locks help us avoid costly and embarrassing litigation from customers who have been wrongfully accused.
If we accuse someone of stealing, not only do we need to be right, but also we have to be able to prove that they stole from us. Otherwise we can be found liable in a court of law, and who wants to have to pay a shoplifter who was stealing from us? Unfortunately, even if we stop someone who actually was stealing, but we cannot prove it, we can still be sued.
Having bottle locks removed at the point of purchase helps identify potential losses. If someone is exiting your store with bottle locks still attached to the product, it is easier to offer customer assistance to remove the lock, and then validate the purchase.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Is This A Joke- Alpha Shark Tags

What is black and white and red all over? No, it is not a newspaper. It is clarity of your store’s return policy against consumer wardrobing when you use the red Alpha Shark Tags on your special occasion clothing.
One of the best ways to implement a change of policy is to make sure your intentions are clear- make them black and white. When you start to use wardrobing tags, you want to make sure your employees and your customers are clear form the start as to what they are and what they are used for.
Wardrobing tags are plastic clamps that affix to the front of a garment. There is usually a pin that clamps the two sides together securely. Because this is not an anti shoplifting device, the consumer can easily remove the tag with a pair of household scissors.
It is important that the consumer knows these tags are there for one reason only: to stop wardrobing. The consumer also needs to know that if the tag is removed, it will be unable to be reattached. If the tag is removed, the retailer can use its discretion to reject a return even if it is within the store’s receipted return policy.
The best way to ensure the consumer knows this policy is to verbally tell them at the point of sale. The Alpha Shark Tag can also attach a paper copy of the return and wardrobing policy to the garment to further ensure communication with the consumer.

Using The Tools Wisely- Alpha Nano Gate

Do you really need retail anti theft devices throughout your entire store? For some small businesses, the answer is no. They may be looped into the expense of trying to prevent shoplifting throughout the entire square footage because they are not aware that there are small effective and cost efficient alternatives.
The Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate is just such a retail anti theft device. Say you have a general merchandise store that has a small area built in for electronics like GPS or mobile phones. Since these are items that you do not want to have floating around on their own, you have made a type of store in store location for them.
By installing an Alpha Nano Gate on specifically for this in store location, you only have to use the Alpha 3 Alarm on these high theft items. If anyone passes by the Alpha Nano Gate with an Alpha 3 Alarm tagged product, the audible alarm will activate and the product’s location can be found.
This saves the money needed to purchase and maintain the big Checkpoint towers by the exit doors, and puts your retail anti theft devices only where they are needed.

Fully Immersed and Hands On- Retail Theft Prevention

One important piece to selling electronics is the ability to demonstrate them. When a customer is looking to buy a new tablet or phone, they want to be able to push the keys, turn it on and see how it is going to work for them. When they can use it, the customer is better informed and more likely to buy it. When retail theft prevention locks those items up and prevents demonstrations, a customer is more likely to pass on that purchase.
There are retail theft prevention devices that work wonderfully to stop shoplifting electronics when they are in the packages. To allow a customer to be fully immersed and hands on with the product, other anti shoplifting tools need to be used to secure a working display from theft.
The Atlas system is a fully contained system that allows customers to use the display and still keep it secured. Because the Atlas display stand incorporates all of the components in its base, there is no need to drill into existing counters, or can be used on a glass display case. The Atlas is appropriate for use with electronics like tablets, GPS, cameras, mobile phones and MP3 players.

How Much is Too Much? – Clothing Security

How much is too much? When you are merchandising and stocking in your departments, traditionally you want to fill the shelves and the racks as much as you can. It is usually discouraged to have things in a back stockroom. How does this play into clothing security? Can there be too much product on the sales floor?
If you have theft issues, than yes, you can have too much product out. Thieves will take every opportunity you give them. If you put out every piece of high theft merchandise, do not be surprised if the thieves actually take every piece.
Clothing security actually goes beyond just putting clothing security tags on your merchandise. It involves taking a second look at the opportunities your store presents. Can you reduce your shelf quantities and not make a negative impact on your sales? If so, do it. Take those items and back stock them.
By giving your store a different approach to theft prevention than just using Checkpoint tags, you will be better off. Reducing your shelf quantity is just another enhancement to your clothing security.
The right way is to look at your current sales and make a determination if you can make the reductions. If you sell multiples of an item and need a large representation of this item, don’t sacrifice your sales through a shelf quantity reduction. However, those situations are generally more of an exception than a rule.
