No Room For Leniency- Pre Employment Screening

Most businesses rely on a standard application process. Computer generated and screened applications are common in larger businesses with more resources. Smaller businesses still rely on paper applications, since it is easy to purchase a pack of pre-made ones from the local office supply store. Both ways offer little leniency to conduct pre employment screening before a candidate is even interviewed.
What if you started streamlining your application process and allowed applicants to give a better look at their capabilities?
Not every open retail position can have a job posting that allows for specific examples to be included with the application, but there are ways to incorporate tests of their skills.
Ask a potential employee to “sell” you an item, or solve a fictitious customer problem. It can give you a better insight into their skill level and their potential dedication to the job. This can be done in person when the candidate drops off their application, or it can be an essay style question at the end of the application.
Employee background checks are not just about conducting formal pre employment screening. It is also about how to streamline your hiring process to get the best-qualified and most productive employee each time you hire. Save the in depth employee background checks for when you are ready to make an offer of employment.
In the mean time, make attempts to weed out the inexperienced and under motivated candidates before you even feel the need to interview them. Asking real scenario questions gives a better insight into how they will actually perform in the job, which is really what you are wanting to know.

One Key To Rule Them All- Alpha Security

Shoplifters are starting to steal Alpha Security detacher keys and use them for their own theft purposes. We are also seeing situations where employees accidentally lose their key creating opportunities for potential shoppers to find them and use them.
Needless to say, it would be unbearably expensive for a small business to have to reinvest in an entirely new security system just because of one lost or stolen detacher key. Realizing that this was starting to arise as a major issue, Alpha Security immediately began to develop a new key: The S3verify Key and devices.
Now, these keys have a store specific code embedded into them. Similar to a chip encoded car key, without the proper key, the locks will not open. A stolen key will erase itself, preventing a shoplifter to use it.
Retail anti theft devices were designed to have a certain amount of universality to them. One key to detach all of these devices was necessary to avoid confusion at the check out. As more retailers switched to using Alpha Security systems to prevent shoplifting, some shoplifters realized that a stolen detacher key could unlock be used to unlock many different retailer’s retail anti theft devices.
The new S3verify Key eliminates this potential loophole.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Two For One Sale- Clothing Security

I had an incident recently where a woman had come into the store to buy a new swim set. She thought that she could be sneaky and basically, con the cashier.
This woman picked out her two-piece swimsuit and put them on the same hanger. Then she pulled the price tag off of one of the pieces. She was trying to make it look like the pieces were to be sold as a set, instead of individually.
We have had more success with selling swim items separately, instead of as a two-piece set.
Since we no longer sell swimsuits in a set, everything is sold as an individual item; it was pretty easy for the cashier to spot what was going on. The cashier explained that it was two separate pieces, and she needed to get the price for both items.
Needless to say the woman barked out something rude and left without her half price swimsuit.
Beyond spotting these kinds of two for one scams, we have found several other benefits to only selling swimsuit separates as individual items, instead of as a set.
Customers who can buy the correct top and bottom sizes they need, and are much happier with their purchase, decreasing the amount of returns we have on these items. We also have fewer issues with miss-matched sets. We don’t have to worry about customers taking two sets in different sizes and piecing together the sizes they need, leaving us with a set that is not the same size, and almost impossible to sell.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint Tags, a Clothing Alarm, Clothing Security or Clothing Security Tags to put Security Tags on Clothes and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Trade You Later- Checkpoint Systems

A recent news story came out around a lady who decided to go into her local supermarket to shoplift. This woman walked over to the seafood section and quickly picked up several packages of lobster tails. She picked up so many packages that the total was over $80 dollars worth. Since she didn’t think to bring a bag with her, she used the next best thing- her pants. The store’s security team didn’t need to have sophisticated anti shoplifting devices, like Checkpoint Systems, to stop this very obvious crime from taking place.
The store security team watched as she stuffed her pants full of packages of lobster tails and then wobbled her way to the exit doors. Because her pants were so full, she was even more obvious as she tried to leave. Now, the store actually did use Checkpoint Systems for their cameras and also in the soaker pads inside the lobster tail’s packaging. If this shoplifter had been more discrete, the store would have had other avenues to recognize this theft.
When she was apprehended, she told police that she was going to trade the tails to a friend for either a buffet lunch or for some prescription drugs. Since it is hard to know someone’s motivation for stealing before they come in, it is best to have something like Checkpoint Systems in place to stop shoplifting.

Grab What You Can- Clothing Security

A grab and run theft is a pretty basic, and yet highly effective form of theft that affects many clothing retailers. The thieves come into a store, pick up a large quantity of the same merchandise, and run out the door into the waiting get away car.
Sometimes the thieves will load their own arms up as with as much as what they can hold, sometimes they will use the store’s shopping bags or carts to hold the massive quantity of merchandise on their way out the door.
Because these thefts are so big and obvious, the shoplifter will come in and out in as little time as possible- sometimes less than a minute total. All of that is contributed to some detailed planning ahead of the actual theft.
They will have scoped out the store ahead of time to find out where items are kept. They will figure out the best place to park the escape vehicle, and they will know when your employees are most and least likely to notice them.
Because the theft happens so fast, it is basically over before it begins. Your employees probably won’t notice anything until the EAS/ security alarm goes off as the thieves are running out the door with your merchandise. The losses are astronomical due to the large quantity of product being taken at one time.

Stop A Robbery- Bottle Locks

Increasing your store’s overall bottle security can be key to protecting your employees from and during a robbery. Some of the best solutions are to use bottle locks like the Alpha Security EASy Bottle, security cameras and alarm systems.
Bottle locks can actually help to decrease the likelihood of a robbery even taking place. When potential robbers see that there are bottle locks, in addition to other kinds of bottle security, they know there is a heightened level of awareness and security features in place.
Compared to a liquor store that does not display any obvious signs of security like bottle locks, the robber will be less likely to rob your liquor store, and more likely to rob the other one.
Additionally, adding a silent alarm behind a counter can be extremely beneficial during an actual robbery attempt. The silent alarm button will alert local police to the store without being obvious to the robber.
Knowing that there is a silent alarm can help employees feel safer before a robbery attempt. They can feel like they are being protected proactively.
Employees feel safer and more secure during a robbery attempt because they know help is on the way.
Even if the robbers leave before the police get there, the employees feel less alone in during a highly stressful, and potentially traumatizing, event.

A Communication Breakdown- Employee Background Checks

There was a recent survey conducted by a popular employment website. It went through many of the pitfalls employers were coming up against in finding new, qualified candidates. It seems that it was not related to findings from employee background checks, but rather communication breakdowns within the hiring process.
Many employers, who received applications, consistently sent out an automatically generated email stating that the application was received and would undergo review. Of those applications, very few were notified by the company that they had not been picked for an interview, and of the ones that had been picked even fewer candidates were actually notified that they did not receive the job.
Communication was not just lacking by the employers. It was also coming from the applicants who at one point or another in the process expressed a genuine interest in the job.
The employers interviewed spoke of candidates not showing up for interviews, declining positions after they had accepted them, and some candidates not even showing up for their first day of work with no communication as to why.
Many applicants cited a lack of initial communication from employers as reasons why their interest waned over the process. As hiring practices are being drug out sometimes as long as four to six months, with many of those months with zero communication from the potential employer, employee candidates second guess if they really want to work for those companies.
Employee background checks are still very relevant and needed. If an employer isn’t respectful during the hiring process, they can almost guarantee that they will end up with a bad hire by the end, and no pre employment screening is needed to tell you that.

It’s In The Bag- Retail Anti Theft Devices

While highly complex thefts are out there, most common shoplifters use relatively low- tech and simple forms of shoplifting. One of the most frequent shoplifting methods is to conceal merchandise in a bag. That includes handbags, totes, sports duffels and backpacks.
A shoplifter thinks they can stuff product in their bag and walk out the door without being noticed.
The best way to deter and combat this kind of theft is to use security tags, commonly called EAS tags. The tag is a visual warning that the merchandise is being protected. Even if the shoplifter tries to steal the product by concealing it in a bag, the EAS alarms will still register.
Beyond the use of EAS tags, you can also use your employees to deter these concealed thefts. You can ask that all large bags are kept at the register to prevent that kind of access to a shoplifting tool. It’s not the most customer friendly method, but some retailers are still doing it.
You can also train employees to keep an eye out for bags that look flat or empty for their size. The shoplifter might intentionally keep the bag empty so they have plenty of room to stuff merchandise into it.

No More Pin Stripes- Clothing Security

The days of mob bosses and pin striped suits are gone. The new face of organized crime is one of many nationalities, both males and females, and of all groups. The sad reality is that organized criminals are stealing from these stores because the owners and employees are so oblivious to what is going on. The employees are simply looking the other way, or do not realize the full extent of the theft.
What ends up becoming a reality is that many retailers think because no one in a fedora and pin stripe suit is stealing from them they are immune to organized retail theft.
In fact, many organized retail theft cases that I have worked in the past revolve around a suspect that every one in the store has seen. That is because these thieves are in the store on multiple occasions and aren’t scared of employee interaction.
When I show my employees pictures of my suspects so they can let me know if they see them, the employees often are surprised because they do recognize the suspect. They see them frequently, but never suspected a thing. This familiarity only makes it easier for these organized retail criminals to get away with multiple thefts and major financial losses for the unassuming stores.

Beyond An Apprehension- Loss Prevention Workshop

Going to a loss prevention workshop isn’t only about learning how to apprehend a shoplifter. It is about finding ways to identify your store’s vulnerable areas and finding plausible, financially sound, and effective solutions for them. Some store’s do not want to make apprehensions, but do not realize there are other ways to prevent shoplifting.
The reality is most shoplifting is preventable. Some of them might be easy fixes, and some of them might require a more complex system to keep the shrink losses at bay.
The more training and education you have, the better your chances of reducing your overall shrink losses. The key is in knowing what your specific store vulnerabilities are and how they happen.
Maybe you have inattentive employees on the weekends. Perhaps your high theft merchandise would benefit from being placed at the front of the store where employees can watch it better.
Can you use EAS and other retail anti theft devices to keep your desirable products on the sales floor for customers, but deterring theft at the same time?
Does your shoplifting happen at a certain time of day or week? What are your biggest loss items? Have you found evidence that the shoplifting seems to happen in the same location of the store (fitting room, back corner)?
By identifying the key areas, the information from a loss prevention workshop can be applied to how to deter shoplifting, saving you and your employees from actually having to apprehend a shoplifter. By deterring the theft ahead of time, you reduce your inventory losses without putting your employees at risk.
