Beyond an EAS System- Loss Prevention Workshop

If you have a shoplifting problem in your store the obvious solution is to run out and invest in an EAS system, or similar retail theft prevention. EAS systems are a significant financial investment, one that will pay off over time, but may cause an immediate strain on some small business finances.
EAS systems are also not an immediate fix. You have to decide which system you want, have it installed and then EAS tag or label your inventory. Again, an extremely effective and worthwhile investment, but what do you do in the mean time?
Look into taking a loss prevention workshop for additional loss prevention training.
Sometimes the best solution is the most obvious solution. A loss prevention workshop can give you tips and tricks to mitigate some of your losses (for free) while you coordinate your efforts to install an EAS system.
One of the tips to stop shoplifting is to look at remerchandising some of the more desirable products within your store. Do you have small, high theft items on a shelf location in the middle of your store? Why not move them closer to the POS system? These items will have a better chance of being continually monitored, and anyone who picks one up can easily and immediately pay for it.

How It’s Made- Anti Shoplifting

If you have ever looked at Checkpoint tags or other tags designed for retail theft prevention, you might not realize just how sophisticated that piece of plastic actually is. Embedded within those molded shells is technology that is decades in the making. These tags are considered by some as a work in progress, as the EAS tags are constantly being improved upon.
The first step in making these anti shoplifting tags is to create the hard tag portion through an injection mold or is vacuum formed. The pin is generally made from nickel-plated steel.
The second step is to make the resonator. A resonator is a series of tiny metal loops or coils made out of appropriate magnetic metal (like copper) that will resonate in response to an interrogation signal (formed at the exit door towers of the Checkpoint Systems). This is the key to stop shoplifting. The resonator is what will trigger an alarm if a tag is left on, or label left activated.
Once the resonator is placed inside the Checkpoint tags (or similar) it is time for the locking mechanism to be added. This is the component that will hold the pin in place, preventing shoplifters to easily separate the two sides.
Now that the internal components are complete, the upper and lower sides of the plastic tag are heat fused or ultrasound sealed together completing the tag assembly.

Didn’t See That- Alpha Nano Gate

I never worried about trying to prevent shoplifting out of the back office areas in my stores. So it never crossed my mind to install and Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate outside the office.
In a few of my stores, I have employed a visual manager. Their job was to keep signage up to date, and create visual displays using new and popular merchandise.
Since they routinely took multiple products off the sales floor to carry out their job responsibilities, no one ever questioned why they had merchandise in their hands. I guess we should have been concerned because they were taking the product back to their office instead of keeping the items out on the sales floor.
What we didn’t realize, until after it was too late, was that this manager had been stealing merchandise for years. It was only after they left to pursue anther job, did we uncover the massive quantity of discarded price tags, retail anti theft devices, and labels stashed back in their office.
They used the access given with their position to cover up the extra product they were taking home. We should have had a policy that all merchandise stays out of the office, and installed an Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate to enforce that policy.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

No Sales, No Profit- Employee Theft

In my latest employee theft investigation, I had a manager that was stealing cash. It took us a while before we figured out what was going on because we didn’t show any cash losses on our daily till reports.
What we were showing losses on was for inventory. Progressively, our inventory costs were going up and our sales were taking a minor decline.
It was by chance that we started the employee theft investigation. We had just received a shipment of a particular new product. A few days later, we were out of stock on that item, but we didn’t see the sales we should have on it.
After beginning to review the journal tape, we noticed that at the end of the day there had been several voided cash transactions. Many of which had involved this new item.
When we started to suspect employee theft, we began to review journal tapes from other days. We noticed a pattern. A particular closing manager would have several cash transactions voided out just before store closing. Some of the transactions were ones that had occurred earlier in the day before she even got to work.
We watched video from the cash office during her closing shifts and discovered that she would take money out of the tills and put it in her purse.
After gathering several weeks of evidence we sat her down for an interview. She admitted that she would search the journal tapes for cash transactions and then post void them out. She would take that dollar amount in cash for herself-, which is why there wasn’t a cash shortage. Because the customer was leaving with the merchandise the shortage came from the inventory losses.

Socially Acceptable- Background Check Experts

There is an ongoing debate over the legality of using information found on social media as a form of pre employment screening.
For some employees, Social media is an outlet for their personal expressions. In spite of their need to over share personal information or their questionable behaviors, many in the job pool believe that their personal lives should remain private. Any digging into social media sites would therefore constitute a violation of their privacy.
That hasn’t stopped all businesses from cruising the social media sites to see if they can find a potential candidate. With privacy and security controls as they are, it should reasonably fall to the responsibility of a job candidate to keep their sites private and block public viewing. Unfortunately, this is not always the case as some businesses are finding out through the court system.
That doesn’t mean that there is some validity to information garnered from social media sites. There are sites specifically designed and created for the working individual. These sites give potential employers unofficial background checks that are allowable for hiring purposes. Since the site is to be shared within the professional community, instead of a personal network of friends and family, employers are welcomed more freely to investigate through those networks.
The down side to using these for informal background checks is that the job applicant puts the information on the site. It is at their discretion what is posted and what is omitted. The biased information may not be a reliable form of pre employment screening.

Different Needs, Different Systems – Bottle Locks

Most retailers are aware that there are two main kinds of Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS for short) systems. One is based off of Radio Frequencies (RF) or Electromagnetic compatibilities. The question is: what if you don’t have a bottle security system in place? Do you have to have one to utilize bottle locks?
A simple evaluation will help guide you to the next step, which would be enhancing your liquor store’s bottle security. Think about the following questions:
Do you see the biggest inventory losses coming from theft (either from shoplifters or employees)? Or…
Do you have an issue with unauthorized in- store sampling (opened bottles, customers/ minors caught drinking inside your store)?
Or do you have a problem with both?
If you have a theft issue, especially if there is employee theft of merchandise, you probably want to invest in a complete bottle security system. Employees and shoplifters are less likely to steal when there are operational and inventory controls in place. A full EAS system will be worth your investment and provide reasonable ROI.
If you are having an issue with in store sampling, look primarily to bottle locks. Alpha Security bottle locks provide consistent and successful product denial benefits, without the need to attach them to an EAS system.
If you have an issue with both, then you have an absolute need to invest in bottle locks that will alarm with an EAS system while providing product denial at the same time.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Tie One On- Alpha Shark Tags

The news has been quick to point out that women are more likely than men to be wardrobing. One in six women will admit to having committed some sort of wardrobing retail in their lives. That doesn’t mean that men never do it that just hasn’t been the focus of media attention.
One of the more common items that men will buy, wear and then return is a tie. Just as a woman wants to have a new dress for each occasion she goes to, men want to update their looks to. A quality tie can sometimes run you just as much as a women’s special occasion dress can.
In most cases, it is even easier for a man to hide the tags while wearing a dress tie. Most of them can be sandwiched between the two ends of the tie, and sealed with a tie clip so no one else is the wiser.
Alpha Shark Tags are a great solution. The pins are delicate enough to not snag when attached. If the tag is properly attached to the lower third of the tie, the wardrobing tags will not be hidden even when the tie is tied around the purchaser’s neck.
This strategic placement is key to success. If the Alpha Shark Tag is to low, or on the wrong end, the tag can be hidden from view, rendering it ineffective against wardrobing.

Buried Within- Checkpoint Labels

Source tagging is a retail theft prevention practice of embedding Checkpoint labels, or other brands of retail theft prevention, within an actual product. This takes place at the point of manufacturing.
Source tagging takes the smallest possible Checkpoint labels and hides them in seams of clothing, or within the soles of popular athletic shoes. By affixing the labels within the actual product during production, a retailer’s payroll spent attaching hard tags to clothing and other products is reduced. Conversely, the retailers are also saving payroll and customer check out times as there is no need to remove, sort and recycle these embedded labels.
The labels are deactivated using the same deactivator pad used for most Checkpoint systems. There are no additional supplies or accessories to invest in since the source tagged labels are Checkpoint systems compatible. The labels will deactivate the same way any other exterior labels do, even though they are buried inside of a garment or product.
Designed as a better way to stop shoplifting, source tagged merchandise makes a shoplifter hesitate, as they can’t find the labels to defeat them. Rather than risk being caught by an alarm at the exit doors, the majority of your common shoplifters will bypass stealing from retailers that are known to utilize buried source tags.

Don’t Overlook An Old Standby- Retail Anti Theft Devices

With all of the exciting advancements in retail anti theft devices, it is easy to overlook the effectiveness and usefulness of an old stand by- the Alpha Security Ink Tag.
The ink tag is a combination of typical retail anti theft devices (EAS tags) and vials of dye. Generally there is a glow in the dark ink and a dark blue or red dye in each tag. The point being, even if a shoplifter runs out of the store with merchandise that still bears an EAS tag, they will effectively destroy the merchandise when they tamper with the EAS tag to remove them.
These tags prevent shoplifting by providing the risk of getting caught by an alarm, in addition to ruining whatever they are trying to steal. If the merchandise is worthless, there is no point in stealing it. Clothing cannot be resold or worn easily when the ink stains the fabric beyond repair.
A suspected shoplifter who tampers with these tags will also get the ink stained on their hands. Investigator/ law enforcement will use those stains as evidence in court since the ink can be matched to the broken ink vials in the tags.
